Patrick Grace, CEO Here at OEC, we strive to improve our members' quality of life through the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service. One of those innovative energy programs kicks off next month, and I'm excited for you to have the opportunity to experience savings on your electric bill. The Co-op Home Energy Efficiency Program — the result of a pilot program we conducted in 2016 — offers free home energy audits and detailed return-on-investment reports to members. This program is intended to provide answers and solutions to those of you looking to cut your energy costs. As your trusted energy advisor, we want to see your bottom line benefited before ours, and this programs helps us do just that. It might seem counterintuitive that, as an electricity provider, we encourage consumers to use less of the service we provide. But, we are also your trusted energy advisor and know when our members — who are also our neighbors — and their families prosper, everyone wins. We invite any OEC member living in a single-family house or larger to apply for this free service at www.OKNM.coop. We will send an energy efficiency expert from Precise Building Performance to your home to conduct the audit. He will then provide you with a detailed report that includes steps you can take to make your home more energy efficient. I believe this is an especially useful program for those who live in older homes. Today's homes are built to be somewhat efficient, but if you believe your home is capable of using less energy, we hope you let us help you find ways to reduce it — and also save money. We continually search for ways to look out for our members and their pocketbooks. Find more ways you can save on energy consumption and costs at www.okcoop.org or call one of our efficiency specialists at 321-2024. We are proud to serve our members by offering this free service and appreciate you trusting us to be your energy advisor.

OEC Foundation board approves over $30,000 in grants The OEC Foundation, Inc. board of directors met Jan. 19 and approved over $30,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations, families and individuals. "We are always happy to be able to help these organizations who do so much good for our communities," said Joyce Wallace, board president. "It wouldn't be possible without the generosity of thousands of OEC members." [3033185334] The board awarded $9,200 to Transition House, a nonprofit located in Norman that provides tools for sustaining mental wellness with skills development, supportive care and advocacy. The funds will be used for personal household essentials for clients in recovery. "Transition House is extremely grateful for the many years of support OEC has provided," said Transition House Executive Director Bonnie Peruttzi. "Your support has enabled people to have essentials they need as they are focusing their time and energy on recovering from serious mental illness." (CASA) and Friends of the Mustang Public Library. Dibble Senior Citizens received $2,500 for food, supplies and equipment. Eight individuals and families received assistance for items and services ranging from the construction of a handicap accessible ramp, dentures, vision care, dental care and other healthcare needs. "Making a difference in a family and in the wellbeing of children is very fulfilling," Wallace said. "We are grateful for the OEC members who participate in Operation Round Up." Grants from the Operation Round Up program are made possible thanks to OEC members who elect to round up their bills to the nearest dollar each month. The accumulated change is granted to organizations, individuals and families in OEC's service area via the Operation Round Up program. Grant recipients are not required to be OEC members, and grants may not be issued for utility bills, rent or mortgage payments. Applications — individual/family and organizational — may be found at www.okcoop.org/ORU. Those submitted by Feb. 26 will be reviewed at a meeting March 7. Contact Tory Tedder-Loffland at 217-6726 or ORU@okcoop.org if you have any questions about the program or the application process.

OEC sends crews to assist sister co-op following Winter Storm Jupiter Local weathermen predicted a destructive, tumultuous ice storm would hit Oklahoma — potentially OEC’s service area — and leave thousands of electric consumers statewide without power. On Jan. 13, that’s exactly what happened. While OEC's members dodged this ice storm, named Winter Storm Jupiter, our friends to the north and west did not. Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) began receiving mutual aid requests Jan. 14 from the hardest hit co-ops. OEC responded immediately by sending a six-man crew to Northwestern Electric Co-op. During the following days and weeks, additional overhead and underground construction crews assisted the most heavily impacted co-op, located in Woodward, with its restoration efforts. Tri-County Electric Cooperative in the panhandle and Cimarron Electric Cooperative also experienced widespread damage, along with several other co-ops. Collectively, nine coops sent mutual aid crews to assist the northwestern part of the state. As of Jan. 15, OAEC reported 16,530 electric co-op consumers across Oklahoma without power due to the storm.

CO-OP NEWS

Apply now for your free home energy audit Do you live in an older home? Is your house drafty? Do you have rooms that are uncomfortable in the winter and summer months? OEC can help with the new — and FREE — Co-op Home Energy Efficiency Program. WHAT DOES THE HOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM OFFER? A home energy efficiency expert from Precise Building Performance conducts a whole-home energy audit. The audit tests your home's ability to seal in heat and air, checks for potential duct leakage and ensures an adequate amount of attic insulation. Members will receive a detailed report on site along with projected retrofit costs and return-on-investment of the project if the member decides to move forward. The audit and detailed report are provided free of charge. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM? The Home Energy Efficiency Program is available only to residential members living in single-family houses and larger. However, members residing in mobile homes are welcome to enroll and will receive helpful resources including specific ways they can cut energy costs. This information can also be viewed at www.okcoop.org. I MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS. WHEN AND HOW DO I ENROLL? Members may visit www.OKNM.coop, fill out some basic information, including their account number, and select "OEC" from the list of co-ops. A member of Precise Building Performance will contact you to schedule your audit — which will take place in March or April. Audits will continue throughout the year, as members enroll. Members may also find do-it-yourself efficiency projects at www.OKNM. coop, as well as a link to Precise Building Performance's list of resources. For more information, contact Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency and solutions specialist, at 405-217-6631 or daniel.lofland@okcoop.org

Scholarship opportunities announced for former Youth Tour winners, future engineers

T

he National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) announced two scholarship opportunities for former Youth Tour winners and students pursuing careers in the rural engineering field. "This will be the fourth year the Youth Tour Alumni scholarships are offered, which is one $10,000 winner and four additional $1,000 winners," said OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland." In 2015, a 2012 OEC Youth Tour winner, Hayden Hefner from Bridge Creek, won the $10,000 scholarship! We know we have youth in our area more than capable of winning these scholarships."

YOUTH TOUR ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS The Glenn English Youth Tour Alumni Scholarship committee is proud to have awarded $56,000 to Youth Tour alumni since starting the program in 2014. To be eligible, applicants must — among other criteria — be a U.S. citizen, have participated in Youth Tour and be working on completing his/her first undergraduate degree. 6

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • February 2017

NEXT GENERATION RURAL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS The interest and success of the Youth Tour Alumni scholarship has inspired the Glenn English Scholarship Committee to partner with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Rural Electric Power Conference (IEEE-REPC) to add an additional opportunity: The Next Generation Rural Engineering Scholarship. Each year, the committee will award two $2,000 scholarships to college students seeking a career in the rural electric engineering fields. Applicants of the Next Generation Rural Engineering scholarship are not required to be former Youth Tour participants. Application portals open Feb. 1 for both scholarships. Links can be found at www.okcoop.org/youth. Both application deadlines are April 1. Winners will be selected and notified in mid-July. Visit www.okcoop.org/youth for complete lists of eligibility requirements and application instructions.

EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP

Meet the 2017 Leadership Summit scholarship winners OEC awarded two $250 scholarships in January: one to Beth Armstrong of Tuttle and one to Sean Boyles of Norman. The two stellar students were selected to attend the 2017 Leadership Summit, a one-day leadership workshop where those in attendance learn team-building and leadership skills. The Summit will be held in February after being postponed from its original date due to hazardous weather conditions. Beth Armstrong, a sophomore at Mulberry Grove School, is very active in 4-H, a global network of youth organizations whose mission is engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development. She is an award-winning speech presenter and has won numerous awards and scholarships for her volunteer work. In 2014, she helped organize a volunteer campaign and successfully opened a library in Tuttle. "After losing at the polls to get a tax-funded library, these citizens and I decided to open an all-volunteer, all-donation library," said Armstrong. "After two years of working toward this goal, we opened a library in May 2014." Sean Boyles, a junior at Community Christian School in Norman, is active in athletics while remaining at the top

of his class academically. His many volunteer hours and involvement organizing activities at his school have opened the door for many leadership opportunities. "Learning leadership is a process," said Boyles. "My first steps toward leadership were scary, but I learned that you just jump in and go, even when you have doubts." Armstrong and Boyles will represent OEC at the Summit, where they will be joined by peers from across the state who represent our sister co-ops. Rhett Laubach, founder of YourNextSpeaker, LLC — and a well-respected, trained youth leadership developer — will conduct the program, to be held at the Chesapeake Boathouse in downtown Oklahoma City. Leadership Summit is part of OEC's youth development initiative, L.E.A.R.N.: Leading, Educating, Advancing and Rewarding the Next generation. L.E.A.R.N. encompasses the catalog of youth programs OEC offers to students, teachers and schools in our service area. For more information, contact Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory TedderLoffland at tory@okcoop.org or visit www.okcoop.org/youth.
