Hidden Account Numbers Worth $100 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached.

I hope you and your family had a fantastic holiday season. We had a great 2019 at OEC and are looking forward to an even better 2020.

I hope you took a chance to read in last month's Co-op News about the groundbreaking partnership we have forged with Norman Public Schools to bring another renewable energy farm to our service area. We are proud to begin construction on the first-of-its-kind solar education facility and excited for what it could mean to future generations.

When we constructed our Solar Garden (at Highway 77 and Interstate 35) with Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC, our wholesale power provider), we did not build it with an education piece in mind. Despite that, we have hosted over 500 people touring the facility educating them about the realities of renewable energy.

It became clear the community could benefit from a purposeful, renewables-focused learning experience.

Who better to partner with than a public school district that is interested in learning more about and promoting renewable energy.

Since the construction of the Solar Garden, we have learned the Norman community and our surrounding communities are passionate about renewables. The Solar Garden has been a great learning experience for us, as well, as we learn more about how solar performs among other renewables.

I appreciate WFEC for always being a great partner and for being one of the most forward-thinking generation and transmission cooperatives in the nation. They are one of the main reasons Oklahoma is one of the top states in the country in renewables production.

OEC Foundation board grants over $41,000 to local organizations, families

T

he OEC Foundation, Inc. board of directors met Dec. 3 to review applications submitted by individuals and organizations for the Operation Round Up® (ORU) program. A total of $41,254 was approved for disbursement to 22 organizations and families.

The board granted $10,000 to the Maguire Community Foundation in Noble to help replace household items for victims of disasters, and $7,500 to American Red Cross Central and Southwest Oklahoma for funds to assist victims of natural disasters and house fires.

Other grant recipients included Amber Volunteer Fire Department ($3,000 for radios and communication equipment), Big Brothers Big Sisters ($3,000 to assist with group activities and restock activity boxes in partner schools), Grady County Foster Care ($2,500 for Christmas gifts for children in foster care), Chickasha Police Department ($2,000 for safety equipment), McClain County Operation Christmas ($2,000 for food and toys for children at Christmas), Norman Christmas Day Community Dinner ($1,500), and Mission Norman ($1,200 for a computer and monitor).

Twelve individuals received grants providing dentures, eye exams and glasses.

"We are always grateful for the generosity of the thousands of OEC members who make it possible to help their neighbors throughout the holiday season," said Alan Davenport, OEC Foundation board president.

ince 2017, OEC has helped over 600 members find ways to cut their energy costs and save money through the Home Energy Consultation program — a free energy audit program offered to qualifying members. As part of our mission to improve our members' quality of life through the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service, we want to help you find savings on your energy bill this year. It's part of the premium service you receive as an OEC member.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM? The Home Energy Consultation program is available only to residential members living in single-family houses and larger. However, members living in mobile homes are welcome to enroll and will receive helpful resources including specific ways they can cut energy costs. Time-of-use rate payers to see rate adjustment effective Jan. 1

A

s part of an ongoing effort to better reflect OEC's true cost of providing electric service to our 57,000 accounts, the service availability charge on our time-of-use rate will increase from 90¢ to $1 per day, effective Jan. 1, 2020. The good news? Another part of the electric rate will decrease.

"According to a cost of service study completed three years ago, our service availability charge should be about $53 per month, or about $1.77 per day," said CEO Patrick Grace. "When the increase takes effect, it will be $1."

WHY DID THE SERVICE AVAILABILITY CHARGE INCREASE? The service availability charge is a fixed daily cost. Theoretically, it should consist of OEC's fixed costs, but the reality is quite different.

Almost all of OEC’s operating costs are fixed. Whether a member uses one kilowatt hour (kWh) per month or 1,000 kWhs, the same amount of infrastructure and materials are needed to provide electricity.

In addition, linemen, bucket trucks and maintenance dollars are needed on a daily basis to ensure that infrastructure operates reliably and efficiently, which can be difficult in unpredictable Oklahoma weather.

"These are all fixed costs for OEC," said Grace. "They are all needed no matter how many kilowatt hours our members use."

WILL PART OF THE RATE DECREASE? In order to keep the rate adjustment from being a rate increase, an area of OEC’s residential rate will be reduced.

On June and October bills, members will experience a decreased cost for off-peak electricity use.

On-peak rates occur on weekdays from June 1 to Aug. 31 from 3 to 7 p.m. The cost of energy used during off-peak hours — anytime other than the on-peak hours listed — on June and October bills will lower from 11.5252¢ to 11¢ per kWh. The small commercial rate is set to change slightly, as well. Check www.okcoop.org/rates for details.

• Applicants must write a 250 - 500 word essay about leadership. Discuss what makes a great leader and what kind of leader you want to be.

• Applicants must submit a resume of their curricular, extracurricular and leadership activities. Include awards, recognitions and certificates. Also include club memberships, offices held, hobbies, community involvement and special interests.

OEC is searching for the best and brightest eighth grade students in our seven-county service area to send to the action-packed, four day Youth Power Energy Camp!

Energy Camp is set for May 26-29 at Canyon Camp and Conference Center near Hinton. Each year, OEC sponsors up to four students to attend the camp, where they will join 80 of their peers from across the state. Energy Camp helps develop leadership skills and promotes teamwork while teaching about cooperative principles, rural electrification and electrical safety.

"Energy Camp is one of the most fun youth programs we offer," said Tory Tedder-Loffland, education and outreach coordinator. "It's a great way for young people to develop leadership skills while learning about the co-op business model, having fun and meeting new friends." [6416300801] While Energy Camp offers many traditional summer camp activities like swimming, hiking, basketball and a ropes course, teens also have the unique opportunity to climb an electric pole like a lineman, ride in the basket of a bucket truck and learn about electric safety measures. They'll take home a new-found confidence and a host of new friends — like-minded peers from all over Oklahoma.

PROCEDURE AND ELIGIBILITY

Students currently enrolled in eighth grade qualify and must meet the requirements listed to the left, including an essay about leadership, a resume, letter of recommendation and the online entry form.

Energy Camp is part of OEC's youth development initiative, L.E.A.R.N.: Leading, Educating, Advancing and Rewarding the Next generation. L.E.A.R.N. encompasses the catalog of youth programs OEC offers to students, teachers and schools in our service area.

OEC rebate program encourages practical efficiency measures OEC's board of trustees approved the continuation of OEC's robust rebate program for 2020 that has a little something for everyone who wants to make their homes more energy efficient. From programmable thermostats to heat pumps, we’re offering members an array of rebates that will help lessen the burden of sometimes costly retrofit work.

PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS, EV CHARGING AND MORE “One of the most beneficial steps you can take to making your home more energy efficient is installing a programmable thermostat,” said Energy Efficiency Solutions Specialist Daniel Lofland. “One that has the ability to set schedules for your HVAC equipment will help save a lot of money in the long run.”

Members who upgrade to a programmable thermostat after Jan. 1, 2019 are eligible for a rebate up to $50 (receipt required, limit two per household). In many cases, that covers the entire cost of the thermostat.

“As we approach summer, you will hear us talk more about how a programmable thermostat can make a huge impact on your energy bills, especially if there is no one home during the day,” said Lofland.

You have likely heard us talk about water heater timers, as well. Water heater timers purchased and installed after Jan. 1, 2019 that are programmed to turn off from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during OEC’s Peak Power months (June 1 to Aug. 31) are eligible for up to a $50 rebate (receipt required, limit two per household).

Upon completion of a successful pilot period in 2018, members with electric vehicles (EV) may also take advantage of our newly-restructured rebate program. Members who own an EV and have a level 2 charging station installed are eligible for a $200 rebate.

“The level 2 charging station must be scheduled to charge the EV between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.,” said Lofland. “Scheduling to charge during these times helps ensure that our rates continue to stay affordable.”

REBATES FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION, GAS-TO-ELECTRIC CONVERSION Members who are building new homes or are looking to convert from gas to allelectric, this one is for you.

If your newly-constructed home is complete on or after Jan. 1 and meets four criteria, you are eligible for a $500 rebate.

If you are only looking to convert an appliance or two from gas to electric, we have you covered, too. Conversion of a gas water heater qualifies members for a $300 rebate, and conversion of gas heat or furnace to a heat pump qualifies members for a $500 rebate.

Is your heating system electric resistance? If so, it is terribly inefficient and can be a main cause of high winter bills. In light of that, we now offer a $400 rebate for conversion from electric resistance heat (heat strips) to a qualifying heat pump.

Keep in mind that simply upgrading a current heat pump to a new one does not qualify for a rebate.

Speaking of heat pumps, continued research shows geothermal is the way to go for folks looking to make the most savings on their energy use. Members who upgrade to a geothermal heat pump from an air-source heat pump or gas furnace — or new construction that includes geothermal — are eligible for a $500 per ton rebate (five ton cap).

To qualify, equipment must be AHRI certified (certificate required) and members must present the invoice from the installation company.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Three DIY efficiency projects to tackle this year

A

New Year brings new opportunities to save energy––and money. You may think energy efficiency upgrades require a great deal of time and expense, but that’s not always the case.

If you’re interested in making your home more efficient but don’t want to break the bank, there are several DIY projects you can tackle to increase energy savings. Let’s take a look at three inexpensive efficiency upgrades that can help you save energy throughout the year.

TRIM DRYER VENT Level of difficulty: easy. Supplies needed: tin snips, gloves, measuring tape and masking tape. Estimated Cost: about $25 depending on the supplies you already have.

If your dryer vent hose is too long, your dryer is working harder than it has to, using more energy than necessary. The vent hose should be long enough for you to pull the dryer out a couple feet from the wall, but the shape of the hose should form a line––it should not have a lot of slack, with twists and curves. A shorter, unobstructed vent hose increases the efficiency of your dryer, dries clothing faster and reduces lint buildup, which can create potential fire hazards.

Simply measure, mark and trim the hose to the desired length, then reattach the hose to your dryer and exterior vent. If you’re unsure about the hose length, check out YouTube.com for a quick video tutorial.

SEAL AIR LEAKS Level of difficulty: moderate. Supplies needed: caulk and caulk gun, weather stripping, gloves, putty knife, paper towels. Estimated Cost: $25 to $50 depending on the materials you purchase.

Sealing air leaks in your home can help you save 10% to 20% on heating and cooling bills.

Apply caulk around windows, doors, electrical wiring and plumbing to seal in conditioned air.

You should also weather strip exterior doors, which can keep out drafts and help you control energy costs. Types of caulking and weather stripping materials vary, but ask your local hardware or home store for assistance if you’re unsure about the supplies you need. Level of difficulty: moderate. Supplies needed (if you build the box yourself): rigid foam board, faced blanket insulation, tape for foam board, measuring tape, utility knife, caulk and caulk gun, plywood. Estimated Cost: $50 to $100.

A properly insulated attic is one of the best ways to optimize energy savings and comfort in your home, but many homeowners don’t consider insulating the attic stairs, or the opening to your attic space. Even a well-insulated attic can leak air through the stair opening, but luckily, there’s an easy fix. [0534239605] An insulated cover box can seal and insulate the attic stairs opening. You can build your own insulated cover box or purchase a pre-built box or kit from a local home improvement store like Home Depot or Lowe’s for about $60. It should also be noted, if your attic opening is located in a garage that you do not heat and cool, this upgrade will not be as effective.

Saving energy doesn’t have to be hard. With a little time and effort, you can maximize energy savings and increase the comfort of your home.
