Convenience is key for members attending this year's Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation Night

For members who have attended OEC's Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation Night in the past, this year's event will look completely different. Due to construction inside the University of Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center (LNC), the event will take place as a drive-thru in the LNC's parking lot on Friday, Sept. 15.

As details of the event continue to take shape, here's what we can share about this year's Annual Meeting:

• Members who attend will receive a $30 bill credit (a $10 increase from 2022).

• Convenience is key, as OEC staff will register you from the comfort of your vehicle. Simply follow the signs and friendly faces!

• As usual, members who attend will receive a

bag filled with free OEC and OEC Fiber items.

• Those who attend might be one of our lucky prize winners — including two $1,000 grand prizes!

• Unfortunately, the logistics of a drive-thru event do not allow for food to be served.

"Because of the LNC's construction, we have the opportunity to try a different concept we believe our members will enjoy," said Brianna Wall, OEC manager of marketing and member relations. "Fortunately, many of our co-op peers across the nation have tested this drive-thru meeting format, and we believe we can offer our members the same successful experience."

Three employees volunteer at 2023 Special Olympics Summer Games

Volunteers from 23 Oklahoma electric co-ops came together in Stillwater in May to assist with the Special Olympics Summer Games. Three employees represented OEC among the record 150 co-op volunteers in Stillwater.

Network Technician III Nick Moyer, Copywriter Erin McKnight and Member Service Associate Rosa Baringer joined other co-op employees and family members as they assisted with track and field events.

Four thousand athletes from across the state participated in the Summer Games. During the three-day event, athletes competed in track and field, bocce, bowling, golf, horseshoes, powerlifting, basketball and softball.

"This was by far the most rewarding experience of my life, especially now that I have a kiddo of my own," said McKnight. "Seeing the joy on these athletes' faces and having the opportunity to celebrate with them has changed me for the better."

Barringer echoed her comments. "It was a humbling and inspiring experience to watch the athletes compete with such joy! I would recommend that everyone volunteer if they get the chance."

In addition to OEC's volunteers, the OEC Foundation, Inc. via the Operation Round Up® program donates funds to area Special Olympics teams each year. That funding is made possible by members who round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar. 6617100103

"Volunteering for Special Olympics is a humbling experience. I am so proud of these young people and their tenacity to overcome their obstacles and win," said Moyer. "Each participant touched my heart. The high fives were endless, and the smiles and hugs were priceless. I will treasure each minute."

Make-A-Wish Oklahoma grants childhood dreams and medical triumphs

In the heart of Oklahoma, a wonderful organization known as Make-A-Wish brings hope, joy and healing to children battling critical illnesses. Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, a chapter of the national foundation serving the entire state, has made dreams come true for these brave kids for several years. Last year, two children in Oklahoma Electric Cooperative's service territory had their wishes fulfilled due to a large donation from The OEC Foundation.

"One of the driving forces behind our success is the donations from organizations," said Erin Nantois, Makea-Wish Oklahoma's director of philanthropy. "Their support and collaboration profoundly impact the lives of countless wish children and their families."

THE IMPACT: The OEC Foundation's support is evident through the stories of wish children like Austin and Tallyn. Austin, a five-year-old boy with high-risk stage 4 neuroblastoma, comes from a large, loving family, Nantois said. With the OEC Foundation's help, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma provided Austin and his family the opportunity to create lasting memories during a challenging time.

"The light at the end of the tunnel was something that Austin and our family focused on during these

difficult days when hope seemed out of reach," said Austin's mother, Joyce.

Tallyn, a young girl battling Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, eagerly awaited her wish experience for over two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, Nantois said. With the support of the OEC Foundation, Tallyn, a big fan of all things princesses, lived out her dreams at Disney World, met her favorite Disney princesses and enjoyed an unforgettable trip with her family.

"I don't think I realized just how big of an impact it would be," said Tallyn's mother, Karin. "I knew a Disney trip would be amazing, but I don't think I realized just how magical and healing it would be for our entire family."

THE HEALING POWER OF WISHES: Research has shown that children with something positive to look forward to, such as a wish experience, exhibit improved compliance with treatments, better emotional well-being and even enhanced physical health, Nantois said.

"By providing hope and a tangible goal, wishes contribute to the overall well-being of these resilient children," Nantois said. "We have seen it time and again, children with a wish to look forward to improve not just physically, but emotionally and mentally."

Following the fulfillment of their child's wish, 94% of parents observed remarkable enhancements in their child's emotional wellbeing, according to Make-a-Wish Foundation's 2022 Impact Report. The effect was so profound that 91% of parents believed the granted wish contributed to their child's improved chances of overcoming their illness. As a testament to the transformative power of wishes, a striking 91% of parents regarded the wish experience as an essential component of their child's medical treatment.

OPERATION ROUND UP: Since 1997, donations from generous members who round up their monthly bills have funded more than $51,000 in donations to Make-a-Wish Oklahoma, helping more than 60 children in our service territory.

"It is so special to have these community partnerships," said Education & Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland. "Seeing the direct impact of our members' and employees' donations on these families reminds us of why we do what we do."

COLLABORATION AND FUNDRAISING: As Director of Philanthropy, Nantois focuses on fundraising to support the organization's mission. Through grant writing, corporate partnerships and community engagement, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma raises funds to grant wishes and provide vital support to families.

"Every donation means more wishes granted, which clears the way for more kids to come down," Nantois said. "It clears the way for the 300 waiting children behind them."

GET INVOLVED! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Make-A-Wish Oklahoma understands the importance of community involvement and the power of volunteers, Nantois said. Programs like "Kids for Wish Kids" enable high school students to organize fundraisers and contribute to granting wishes locally, Nantois said. College students can join the "Wishmakers on Campus" club, while young professionals can participate in the Young Professionals Council. These opportunities allow individuals to give back to their community while building meaningful connections.

In recent years, many homeowners discovered the convenience and potential cost savings of creating a smart home. From the improved energy efficiency of smart thermostats to the increased security of smart doorbells and cameras, smart home technology can transform your house into an ideal living space.

However, the delights of smart home devices do not have to be limited to the four corners of your house. With some planning and creative design, you can take the conveniences of smart home technology into your backyard!

While smart lighting offers convenience and control, keep in mind your wall light switch will need to stay “on” for you to control the smart bulb from your phone or via voice command. To use a smart bulb, the wall switch it’s connected to must be “on” so the bulb receives power, which enables it to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Club Sun: Solar Tours

The Irving Students for Solar Club visited Oklahoma Electric Cooperative's office on May 19. During their visit, students took a comprehensive tour of OEC's different departments, including dispatching, metering, engineering and logistics, guided by Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland. The students discussed diverse job functions and potential opportunities within the organization. A particular focus was placed on investigating logistics-related materials, such as overhead and underground wires, insulators for poles, transformers and cut-out devices, and exploring their operational mechanisms to safeguard our electrical system. As part of the visit, Energy Efficiency

Solutions Specialist Daniel Lofland and District Lineman Jake Calvert conducted an impressive Live Line demonstration focused on electrical safety. Subsequently, the group proceeded to the Solar Garden, where Manager of System Engineering

Nick Shumaker guided through the Solar Garden and the scientific process of solar energy.

WFEC GENERATION REPORT

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE ICE CREAM BARS

Ingredients

ƒ 3 cups canned coconut milk or heavy cream

ƒ 1 jar (12-16 ounces) strawberry jam

ƒ 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

ƒ 6 ounces white chocolate, chopped

ƒ 1 tablespoon cocnut oil

ƒ 2 cups freeze dried strawberries

ƒ 1 cup brown rice crispies

1. In a bowl or a blender, blend together the coconut milk or heavy cream, strawberry jam, and vanilla.

2. Evenly divide the mix between 8 popsicles molds or use paper dixie cups.

3. To make the magic shell. Melt the white chocolate and coconut oil together in the microwave. Cook on intervals, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Let cool 10 minutes.

4. Add the dried strawberries and rice crispies to a blender or ziplock bag. Crush into fine crumbs, then place into a shallow bowl or pie plate.

5. Remove the pops from the freezers and cover in white chocolate, then roll through the strawberry crumbs. Eat or keep in the freezer until ready to eat!
