Have you heard? OEC Fiber crossed the 1,000 subscriber mark three months to the day after opening service to the public. It's been remarkable to see this plan go from a single spreadsheet to serving over 1,000 homes and businesses. It's a tremendous accomplishment, and we aren't slowing down. If you remember, we spent most of 2017 studying the feasibility and learning the need for high-speed internet was very real in our communities and rural areas. We first attached fiber to our electric poles in April 2018, then in February 2019 — only ten months later — began offering service to our members. In May, we connected the 1,000th subscriber to our fiber network. From our first conversations with our project consultants, we knew we were capable of building out our network at a very quick pace. With a strong commitment from our board of trustees, we dove in head first. At every level, we knew we would not sacrifice reliability for the speed of construction. We wanted to do things correctly and efficiently the first time, because our rural members need reliable, high-speed internet sooner rather than later. We really had no benchmark until we saw what other electric co-ops were doing with their fiber projects. A few other co-ops in northeast Oklahoma were already in the fiber business, so we were able to model some of our project after theirs. We are one of the fastest growing — if not the fastest growing — fiber co-op projects in the nation. We know our members have a great need for this service and are stopping at nothing to get them the service they deserve at the price they deserve. Some issues we've encountered along the way include rightof-way crossing railroad tracks, differing telecommunications construction codes and, mainly, the logistics of working with every available locator to locate lines in the areas we are building into. It hasn't stopped us from getting service to as many subscribers as possible as quickly as possible. After all, this has always been a member-led initiative, and we will work until everyone in our service area is proud to be an OEC Fiber subscriber.

Keep the time in mind when using electricity

S

ummer is here, and that means OEC's on-peak rates are in effect Monday through Friday, 3-7 p.m. until Aug. 31 (excluding July 4). While electricity costs more to produce during those hot afternoons, you can actually save money during the summer by making a few minor adjustments to your household's energy use routine.

WAYS TO SAVE • Postpone the use of major appliances — like dishwashers, kitchen appliances and clothes dryers — until after 7 p.m. • Invest in a programmable thermostat and pre-cool your home. • Make sure your water heater is set to the lowest point (around 120º), and consider installing a water heater wrap to help seal in the heat. • West-facing windows attract extra heat during the summer. Cover them with curtains or drapes containing thermal linings or barriers. • Closing blinds during the day will help keep the summer heat out of your home. • Use ceiling fans only when you're in the room. They will cause the air to feel cooler, but if no one is in the room to feel it, it is wasted electricity. • Replace or clean air filters. It only takes a minute and savings could add up. • Entertainment center electronics consume power even when they're turned off. Plug them into a power strip and turn it off during the day.

RESIDENTIAL SUMMER RATES Bills mailed in June, July, August and September

On Peak: 24¢ per kWh (June, July & August usage, M-F, 3-7 p.m. excluding July 4)

Off Peak (all other kWhs): June bills: 11.5252¢ per kWh; July-Sept. bills: 9.8688¢ per kWh *All bills include a 90¢ per day Service Availability Charge.

Mark your calendars for the 2019 Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation Night

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

OEC volunteers take part in 50th Annual Special Olympics Summer Games 6

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • June 2019

V

Volunteers from 19 Oklahoma electric co-ops came together in Stillwater May 15-17 to assist with the Special Olympics Summer Games. Four employees represented OEC among the 100-plus co-op volunteers in Stillwater. Pictured to the left, Member Service Associate Loujohnia Hensley, District Linemen Gary Jones and Brad Scott, and Apprentice Lineman Scott Romo joined over 100 other co-op employees from across the state. The co-op employees, family members and former Youth Tour participants assisted with track and field events. More than 5,500 athletes from across the state participated in the Summer Games — it was the event's 50th anniversary. During the three-day event, athletes competed in track and field, bocce, bowling, golf, horseshoes, powerlifting, basketball and softball. "I was inspired by the athletes and their drive to compete," said Hensley. "I highly encourage others to volunteer." Jones echoed her statement. "The drive and determination [the athletes] had was amazing. They just never quit!" In addition to OEC's volunteers, the OEC Foundation, Inc. via the Operation Round UpŽ program donates funds to area Special Olympics teams each year. That funding is made possible by members who round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar. Read more about this program each month on page 4. Scott, who volunteered on the Energy Trails project in 2018 to help bring electricity to rural Guateamala, was equally amazed by the athletes. [4111402502] "The obstacles they overcome and the fights they have to battle everyday compared to my typical day are far more surpassing and I love to help them in any form I can. It is a truly humbling experience."

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

A

As summer is upon us, the thought of going home and jumping in a pool sure does sound amazing. The brisk first few steps seem to wash away the thoughts of a hectic day at work. That sparkling water takes the edge off the Oklahoma sun beating down on you. But did you ever stop to think that the pristine water can be an energy hog? Doubtful, you just put chemical in and clean the debris out and enjoy. Yes, that same water that relaxes you can be the cause of undue stress when your electric bill arrives. That’s because the pump must work to turn that water over and ensure it is filtered correctly. Depending on the size of the pump and size of the pool, you could be pumping away money that should be left in your pocket.

A CLOSER LOOK AT POOL PUMP COSTS Did you know that a one-horsepower pump could be costing you roughly $144 per month in the summer? If you have the pump set to run for 24 hours for simplicity's sake, your jaw will likely drop when you see your bill. If you have a timer and have your pump set to run at specific times, you are on the right track. So, let’s break down the energy consumption and dollars for my example. A one-horsepower motor uses 1,725 watts of electricity — or 1.725 kW. If electricity costs 10¢ cents per kWh and you run that pool for 24 hours per day, you are spending roughly $4.14 per day. This number multiplied by 30 equals $124.20, but this doesn’t take into effect OEC's summer on-peak rates. [5933100205] If you add the higher kWh charge — 24¢ per kWh — from 3-7 p.m. on weekdays during June, July and August, that figure grows to the $144 range. Simply put, turning your pool pump off from 3-7 p.m. during the summer — especially during on-peak hours — could save you $20 per month!

MAXIMIZE YOUR POOL PUMP'S EFFICIENCY

Simply put, turning your pool pump off from 3-7 p.m. during the summer — especially during onpeak hours — could save you $20 per month!

Now to talk about pool pump run times a little. Did you know that for normal use, household pools’ water only needs to turn over once a day? And that the average time for a pump to do so is around eight hours? Now, if we take that same one-horsepower pump and run it eight hours per day — during off-peak hours — you are looking at a monthly cost of roughly $41.40! Many calculators can be found online to help determine all of these variables (horsepower, flow rate, gallons, head length, etc.), and I recommend giving them a shot for your specific pool, or better yet leaving that to the professional pool companies. We hope you take some of this advice and keep that extra money in your pocket this summer. We know there are much more fun things to do with your money this summer than pay your electric bill.

CO-OP NEWS

In May, OEC wrote Dibble Public Schools a $10,000 check for switching to LED lighting throughout its district buildings. We are excited to see Dibble make the switch to LED lighting and can't wait to see how the additional funds are used to benefit students.

TASTY TREATS

OEC's LED rebate program is open to OEC school, nonprofit and small commercial members who are interested in retrofitting to indoor LED lighting. Exterior lighting does not qualify and schools take priority. Currently, the LED rebate program budget for 2019 is depleted until further notice. For more information, please contact Tim Ferree at tim.ferree@okcoop.org or 405217-6705.

PARMESAN TRUFFLE FRIES 28-ounce bag of French fries (or potatoes to cut into fries) 3 tbsp truffle oil or truffle-infused olive oil

Preheat oven to 425°F. Lay fries in an even layer on a baking sheet. Cook per package instructions, 18-22 minutes. Once fries are cooked and slightly crispy, immediately transfer fries to a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese, salt and drizzle with truffle oil. Toss ingredients together in bowl, using tongs to ensure fries are coated evenly. Layer back on sheet pan and return to oven for an additional 5 minutes to recrisp. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and lightly toss to even distribute, add more parmesan cheese if you wish. Serve alongside your favorite sandwich or burger!
