You might’ve noticed during the Super Bowl this year a lot of attention paid to electric vehicles (EVs) by manufacturers. In fact, I don’t recall a non-EV car ad, although there might’ve been one or two. Last year’s rolling blackouts during February’s prolonged, extreme cold stretch brought public attention to the capacity of the electric grid. What exactly can it handle? Is it equipped to accommodate widespread adoption of EVs? Or could an abundance of EV charging lead to more blackouts? Fortunately, power suppliers have been preparing for EV adoption for years now and don’t foresee major issues if widespread EV adoption comes to pass.

While longtime manufacturers like Ford and Chevy are aggressively pursuing the EV market and setting lofty goals, we’re also seeing many startups being created. I suspect we will be seeing and hearing more about EVs in Oklahoma for the simple fact that electricity rates here are lower than many parts of the country. In fact, Canoo — an EV startup — chose Oklahoma for its manufacturing facility, which is expected to be operational in late 2023.

If EVs are widely adopted at some point in the future, power supply can be managed simply by moving EV charging to off-peak hours. The entire electric system is built to handle the load of a summer afternoon when the majority of people get home and crank up their air conditioners. Adding much more to that time of day could put a strain on the system, however EVs can be charged overnight, when supply is abundant — and cheaper.

That’s one of the reasons we offer our Time-of-Use rate and EV rate to members. Those who are willing and able to shift a large portion of their energy use to overnight hours — heating/cooling, running dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, using a timer on your electric water heater, charging your EV, etc. — can see savings on their power bills, especially in the summer.

In all, widespread adoption of EVs and charging them overnight can complement the existing infrastructure and actually lower costs for everyone by taking advantage of off-peak hours. Even if you don’t have an EV and don’t plan on purchasing one, you can still take advantage of your power costs by considering our alternative rates. ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIPS The Glenn English Scholarship Committee partnered with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Rural Electric Power Conference (IEEE-REPC) to add an additional opportunity: The Next Generation Rural Engineering Scholarship.

Each year, the committee awards two $2,000 scholarships to college students seeking a career in the rural electric engineering fields. Applicants of the Engineers of the Future Scholarship are not required to be former Youth Tour participants.

Application portals are open for both scholarships and can be found at www.okcoop. org/scholarships. Interested future engineers must apply by May 14. Winners will be selected and notified in mid-July.

CHARGED! OEC offers STEM-approved curriculum for area classrooms Whether learning in-person or virtually, we continue to offer programming guaranteed to stimulate minds no matter where they're located.

OEC's Get Charged! hands-on educational curriculum does just that while meeting state STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) requirements for classrooms and schools.

OEC Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland has led the classroom program for five years and is gearing up for another year of educating the next generation about the importance and dangers of electricity.

“OEC's board of trustees truly values education and sees the importance of offering programs like Get Charged! which promotes the learning of electricity through science experiments,” said Tedder-Loffland. “The kids always have a great time. Plus, the material goes right along with their science curriculum and meets state science education requirements.”

Full curriculums, teacher's guides and kits are

available free of charge for first through fifth grades if Tedder-Loffland is not able to be physically present in the classroom. The kit includes projects and experiments focused on the components of electricity. [6101201200] "As part of the most popular experiment, the students learn about circuits, conductors and insulators, and draw a schematic of the circuit they are tasked with constructing, which powers a small light bulb," said Tedder-Loffland.

"Later, that circuit operates a telegraph the students use to communicate using Morse Code."

Get Charged! includes more than just electricity education. It also involves learning a little history.

“No matter where I go, they think it’s so cool experiencing what was once a revolutionary form of communication,” said Tedder-Loffland.

A power surge is an unexpected increase in voltage, and it can occur from a variety of sources. Regardless of the cause, power surges can majorly damage electronic devices and equipment in your home.

Let’s take a look at common causes of power surges and how you can protect your sensitive electronics.

One of the most common causes of a power surge is lightning. Most of us have experienced this during a severe thunderstorm. When lightning strikes an electrical system, the excess current must be channeled somewhere––unfortunately in many cases, it’s sent through a home. Your best bet is to unplug all unused devices and electronics during severe thunderstorms.

Another common cause of power surges is electrical overload. This happens when devices or appliances are plugged into an outlet that can’t handle the required amount of voltage, or if multiple devices are plugged into one outlet through an extension cord. If you’re experiencing power surges due to electrical overload, it’s time to call a qualified electrician to evaluate your home’s circuits and electrical needs.

Faulty wiring in a home can also cause power surges.

Damaged or exposed wires can cause spikes in voltage, creating a potentially dangerous situation. If you notice signs of faulty wiring, like visible burns on outlets, buzzing sounds from outlets or frequently tripped circuit breakers, your home may be due for electrical wiring repairs and updates.

Surges can also occur after a power outage. Sometimes, when electricity is being restored and reconnected, it’s common to experience a quick surge in current. Similar to advice

for a surge caused by lightning, it’s best to unplug sensitive electronics during the outage––then wait to plug them back in after power is fully restored.

Aside from unplugging devices when you suspect a power surge, there are two ways you can take additional precautions to protect electronics in your home.

Point-of-use surge protection devices, like power strips, can protect electronics during most surges. But remember, not all power strips include surge protection, so read the packaging label carefully before you buy, and don’t overload the power strip with too many devices. You can also install specialized electrical outlets that offer additional surge protection. Talk to a trusted electrician to learn more.

Another option is a whole-home surge protector, which can help protect your home from larger, more powerful surges. In most cases, whole-home suppressors are connected to your home’s service panel and include features like thermal fuses and notification capabilities that indicate when a device has been impacted by a surge. Whole-home surge protection prices vary based on the size of the home and suppressor. Wholehome suppressors should always be connected by a licensed electrician, so consider the cost of installation as well.

Occasional power surges are inevitable, but by unplugging devices when you think a surge may occur and using additional levels of protection like power strips or whole-home suppressors, you can better safeguard your sensitive electronics and devices.

GAMECHANGER OEC Fiber turns a dream into reality

W

e’ve all imagined living in our dream home. Picked out paint colors, planned out the landscaping and envisioned family photos covering the walls. But few of us have spent time daydreaming about the utilities.

It’s common to assume having access to things like the internet and phone services are a given. Now imagine moving into your dream home, but then not having access to the services you thought you would? This was the reality for Kelly Collyar, of Norman, and his family.

“My wife and I bought our dream home a little over three years ago,” Collyar said.

The property they purchased had everything they dreamed of. A beautiful home on a good chunk of land with plenty of space for raising animals. It was an idyllic setting for their family.

Then they learned that their dream had the potential to become a nightmare. “[Internet] was something you don’t ask about when you move into your dream home,” said Collyar. “I did not know there was not an option. I live in town. I never had a connectivity issue. I didn’t know anybody in the world had a connectivity issue. It blew my mind.”

Well-populated areas such as Norman can easily take internet access for granted. It’s often thought to be like electricity or water. All you have to do is call and get it turned on or connected. Finding that you don’t have access to such an essential service is disappointing

to say the least and can hold unforeseen complications.

“It was on the front end of the Covid-19 pandemic. The world shut down, and they were going to start classes [online]. My kids couldn’t do it. My kids can’t go to school because we can’t [video conference]. We don’t have the bandwidth,” Collyar explained.

semester, it was life-changing. Now we had OEC Fiber, and they were able to interact, participate, ask questions. It was a game changer for us,” said Collyar.

Internet wasn’t the only service they suddenly found themselves in need of when they moved seven miles to the east. Access to dependable home phone service was a top priority for Collyar and his family, but it was nearly unattainable.

“We have no cell service [in our home]. Zero bars. I have a special needs child. What if anything had happened? What if we need to call 911? Some people said just internet call. You don’t have internet; you can’t do that. [With OEC Fiber], now we’re always connected.”

Apart from the peace of mind these services have brought to their home, Collyar and his family were able to use their newfound connectivity to “cut the cord” on their less desirable TV option in favor of a more affordable streaming service.

“When you need TV the most is when it goes out,” he said of his previous provider. “Our [TV service] went out every time there was a storm.

Every time there was a weather event.

Well, guess what. Our fiber does work.

Now when we need it the most, we can count on it. If we’re in the storm shelter, we can pull up [streaming service] on our wireless, and we can see what’s going on and when the storm has passed. That’s game-changing.”

Having access to reliable internet and phone service has revolutionized life in the Collyar home, but it’s not just the connectivity that has opened a world of possibilities for them.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. Directions Step 1: Place shrimp on a plate and sprinkle both sides with Cajun seasoning. Wrap each shrimp with 1 narrow strip of bacon and fasten with a toothpick. Refrigerate for 25 to 30 minutes.

Step 2: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Step 3: Air-fry shrimp for 3 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until bacon is lightly crispy, 4 to 5 minutes more. You may have to do 2 batches depending on the size of your air fryer.

Step 4: Remove shrimp to a plate and drizzle with hot honey. Serve immediately, being watchful of any toothpicks.
