As we usher in another storm season, we find it timely to discuss an issue foundational to our operations and our identity as an electric cooperative: safety. Our endeavors to promote a safety culture and enhance reliability are not just corporate speak; they are lived experiences, technological advancements and a promise of steadfast service to you—our nearly 50,000 members.

Our story of safety is a narrative that stretches back to the earlier days of America's industrial vigor. It's a history where safety often played catch-up to innovation. Unlike those times, safety at our cooperative is not an afterthought. It is the underlying thread of our culture, deeply embedded in our daily routines and long-term strategies. We prioritize the well-being of our workforce and the communities we serve, placing it above all other concerns. Personal protective equipment, cutting-edge technology and comprehensive training are not mere line items in a budget; they are the investments that safeguard lives.

Our lineworkers, a group of highly skilled professionals, are a testament to our dedication to safety. They work in proximity to one of the most dangerous elements—electricity. But beyond the physical demands of their job, they carry a responsibility that weighs heavily on each decision they make, each wire they mend. In our cooperative, no deadline and no financial incentive can justify bypassing the safety of these individuals and the public.

In Oklahoma, our unique weather challenges are well-known. The National Weather Center's location in our state speaks volumes of the extreme weather we encounter. In anticipation of these conditions, we engage in proactive measures such as system hardening and implementing weather-resistant technologies. Our aim is not merely to withstand the storm but to emerge resilient and deliver uninterrupted service in the aftermath.

When disruptions do occur, we are steadfast in our response. Our advanced technologies are designed to maintain an energized system until a failure is detected. At such times, our crews are as efficient as they are thorough because even as we seek to restore power quickly, we do so with the utmost care for safety. It's an assurance we provide—a promise that the power we deliver is matched by the responsibility we uphold. Read more about the delicate process of restoring power and internet service on page 6.

OEC Foundation board grants nearly $83,000 to local organizations, families

In its most recent meeting on April 4 the OEC Foundation, Inc. board demonstrated its ongoing commitment to community enrichment by approving substantial grants for various organizations and individuals totaling $82,928.

Allocations to nonprofit organizations are as follows:

• Dale K. Graham Veterans Foundation: $10,000 Veterans’ support

• Meals on Wheels of Norman: $10,000 Little Axe meal service

• Regional Food Bank: $10,000 Food for Seniors program

• Lexington United Methodist Church: $5,000 Food Pantry expansion

• Bridges of Norman: $10,000 essential student support

• Children’s Medical Research: $2,500 Early Foundations

Allocations for individuals and families include four grants totaling $1,400 for vision care, home repairs and a mattress replacement. OEC lineman

Brandon Sherwood earned his Journeyman Power Lineman certificate after years of classroom work and on-the-job training. In addition to completing apprenticeships under tenured OEC journeyman linemen, Sherwood completed a fouryear program that consisted of classroom hours, testing and on-the-job training. He joins many other linemen with the journeyman distinction at OEC. Congratulations, Brandon!

POWER UP

A closer look at what it takes to restore power and internet service following a damaging storm

It’s springtime in Oklahoma, and we know what that means: the potential of unpredictable, severe weather can occur on any given day. While OEC and OEC Fiber proactively prepare for the impact of spring storms by strengthening our system throughout the year, the possibility of damaging weather remains.

When the storms are gone, OEC and OEC Fiber crews jump into action to restore service. It’s an all-hands-on-deck approach to ensuring members’ and subscribers’ power and internet services are restored safely and quickly. What exactly does this look like in practice?

HOW OEC RESTORES POWER

When electricity goes out, most of us expect power will be restored within a few hours. But when a major storm causes widespread damage, longer outages may result.

OEC line crews work long, hard hours to restore service safely to the greatest number of consumers in the shortest time possible.

First, transmission towers and cables that supply power to transmission substations must be repaired before other parts of the system can operate. Because OEC does not operate transmission infrastructure, we depend on those who do — like our wholesale power provider, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative.

Once transmission structures are safely back in place, line crews inspect substations to determine if problems stem from transmission lines feeding into the substation, the substation itself, or if problems exist down the line.

If the problem cannot be isolated at a distribution substation, distribution lines are checked. These lines carry power to large groups of consumers in communities or housing developments.

If local outages persist, supply lines, called tap lines, are inspected. These lines deliver power to transformers, either mounted on poles or placed on pads for underground service, outside businesses, schools and homes.

If your home remains without power, the service line between a transformer and your residence may need to be repaired. Members are encouraged to use their MyOEC mobile app or call 405-321-2024 to report power outages.

HOW OEC FIBER RESTORES INTERNET SERVICE

How OEC Fiber responds varies depending on the scope of the outage, but the core response stays the same. We work from the largest area of impact to the smallest.

“[First,] the electric crews have to get electric service restored,” said Manager of Fiber Optic Technicians Jeremy Kilpatrick. “Then we get fiber back up. The main lines have to get put back up first. Then splicing and drops.”

Splicing is the meticulous process technicians perform to connect (or weld together) fiber optic cables. One main line consists of 288 thin, hairlike fibers that must be spliced together when damage occurs — one at a time. And technicians must perform the splicing in two separate places on one stretch of main line. Drops are the lines going to individual homes. Running lines to these homes only works if there is a primary system to connect to. Technicians often install a temporary or “temp” line to restore service until they can install a permanent line.

Not all service issues require a crew. Using the OEC Fiber Support app to diagnose issues can prevent unnecessary waiting when outages occur.

Powering up your lawn care with electric equipment

The landscape of lawn and garden care is evolving, and electric equipment is at the forefront of this change. While electric lawn tools aren’t new, advancements in technology and more options mean prices have become more competitive, making electric equipment an accessible option for many consumers.

BENEFITS OF ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT

Electric lawnmowers have come a long way since the days of extension cords tethering you to an outlet. Batterypowered mowers offer the same freedom of movement as gas-powered models but with reduced noise and maintenance.

Battery life was once a major drawback to making the switch to

electric lawn tools. But today’s growing demand for electric equipment has resulted in major advancements for lithium-ion batteries, making them more reliable, cost-effective and efficient. For most consumers, electric lawn tools can get the job done just as well as gaspowered models. 4536300701

Many electric mowers offer pushbutton starts, and because they are lighter, they are easier to maneuver around tight turns. Improved batteries provide longer run times to tackle larger spaces. Like their gas-powered counterparts, electric mowers are available in push, self-propelled/walkbehind and riding models. And there’s no need to refill gas cans or change oil and air filters, resulting in less hassle and maintenance.

Like mowers, electric blowers, string trimmers and chainsaws have fewer moving parts, require minimal maintenance and are quieter. Because electric tools are generally lighter in weight, they’re also more ergonomic and easier to maneuver. This feature is especially handy for projects that require tools like chainsaws for precise work.

CHOOSE ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT TO MEET YOUR NEEDS

Electric lawn tools have some limitations, so the size and terrain of your outdoor space are important considerations when purchasing new equipment. When comparing gas-

powered and electric mowers, consider the torque rating––this is the driving force behind a blade's rotation. On average, electric lawnmowers generate less torque than gas mowers. If you have a challenging outdoor space that includes overgrown brush, tall grass, or hills and dips, torque is a key factor.

Choosing the right type and size mower is particularly important for spaces larger than half an acre. If you have a large property, consider purchasing an extra battery to ensure uninterrupted workflow.

Many manufacturers offer interchangeable batteries and chargers, providing flexibility and convenience. Choosing a single brand can ensure charging compatibility across your lawn tools and streamline charging.

While both gas and electric lawn tools can get the job done, electric equipment generally requires less maintenance, is less expensive to operate and is kinder to the environment.

One of my favorite things about summer is the opportunity for fresh, homegrown food, whether it’s shopping at the local farmers’ market or sharing the abundance of garden tomatoes with a neighbor. It’s amazing how just a few seeds, some fertilizer and water can turn into a bounty.

When I think about energy efficiency, I think about that bounty of food and how, with just a few simple actions, you can use less electricity and reap the rewards of energy savings.

You don’t need to be a farmer or botanist to know that plants need water––just like you don’t have to be a lineworker or engineer to know that adjusting the thermostat or turning off lights can reduce your monthly electric bill. In fact, if you read OEC’s publications regularly and follow us on Facebook, you know there are a lot of things you can do at home to save electricity and money.

Summer months bring some of the highest energy bills of the year. But why? Cooling your home accounts for a large portion of your monthly energy use, and the hotter it gets, the harder (and longer) your air conditioner works to keep you cool.

7 signs you're about to be scammed

While the internet has numerous daily benefits, it also harbors a nefarious side— scamming. An estimated 3.4 billion spam emails are sent daily. At OEC Fiber, we prioritize your online safety and security. While our technicians and online security experts work diligently, safeguarding against scams in your email, social media, texts and web browsers requires vigilance.

We are highlighting seven common signs of scams. Awareness of these signs can empower you to navigate the online world with knowledge and caution.

EMAILS ARRIVE IN YOUR INBOX AT STRANGE TIMES

Many email scams originate from outside the United States in different time zones — be cautious when receiving emails during odd hours, as it could be a red flag. If you receive an email from a familiar contact at an unusual time, it's another reason to exercise skepticism and heightened vigilance

EMAIL ADDRESS IRREGULARITIES

While scammers can easily disguise themselves in the subject lines of emails, it’s much more challenging to establish an email address that fits the company, government agency or other entity they are pretending to be. No legitimate major company or agency would use addresses to conduct business with @yahoo.com, @gmail.com or other free email services. 0636341734

FISHY ATTACHMENTS AND FILES

Beware of messages with odd or intentionally vague attachments. Attachments marked “Invoice “or “Shipping Notification” are particularly common—especially if you are not expecting either from a vendor. Another signal includes the file type employed in the message, such as zip and Microsoft Word document files. Some email programs or services automatically scan such files for viruses, but if you’re suspicious, ignore the message.

URGENT DEMANDS

Many scammers grab your attention by demanding action, often with an overwhelming sense of urgency. “Time is short!” “Respond immediately!” “Your reward expires in one hour!” These are examples of demands designed to pique your interest and get you to click suspicious links.

REQUESTS FOR YOUR PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION

You should ignore emails from any source requesting you enter your personal or financial information. Most companies will never ask you to enter such information through email. If you are unsure how to proceed, contact the company directly before entering your information.

IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS

Phishing scammers have taken a play out of junk mail schemes dating back decades, promising rewards and riches if you act now. From dangling Amazon gift cards or cash prizes, these fraudsters know how to grab your eyes with false promises and snag your bank account information through them.

PHONY DELIVERY NOTIFICATIONS

Fake delivery notifications are a common text message scam — beware of a delivery text notification if you are not expecting a delivery. Even if you are expecting it, proceed with caution. Before clicking on the message, remember how the online vendors you usually use (e.g., Amazon) typically contact you. Ignore all other types of notification. Scams are everywhere, but you can avoid them with some extra attention. This guide will help you avoid phishing and other scams and make you feel more confident when utilizing the internet. TASTY TREATS

SOUTHWESTERN PASTA SALAD

Ingredients

ƒ 2 ears corn, shucked

ƒ 1 16 oz. box medium shell pasta

ƒ 3/4 c. sour cream

ƒ 3/4 c. mayonnaise

ƒ 1 1 oz. packet ranch seasoning mix

ƒ 2-3 chipotle peppers in adobo, seeded

ƒ 1 tsp. lime zest

ƒ 1 tbsp. lime juice

ƒ 1/2 tsp. ground cumin

Directions

ƒ 1 pt. cherry tomatoes, halved

ƒ 1 15 oz. can pinto beans, drained and rinsed

ƒ 2 avocados, diced

ƒ 1 orange bell pepper, seeded and chopped

ƒ 1/2 medium red onion, chopped

ƒ 1 c. chopped fresh cilantro

ƒ 1 c. shredded Mexican cheese blend

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Boil the corn until tender, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the corn from the pot with a fine mesh strainer and rinse with cold water to cool.

2. Add the pasta to the same pot of boiling water and cook one minute longer than the package directions. Drain, rinse with cold water, and let cool.

3. In a blender, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, ranch seasoning mix, 2 chipotle peppers, lime zest, lime juice, and cumin. Blend until smooth. Taste, and blend in a third chipotle pepper, if desired.

4. Cut the corn off the cobs. In a large bowl, combine the corn, cooled pasta, cherry tomatoes, pinto beans, avocado, bell pepper, red onion, cilantro, and cheese. Fold to combine. Gently fold in the dressing. Serve chilled.
