PATRICK GRACE
CEO ADDRESS
It seems like just yesterday we launched OEC Fiber with big goals and an even bigger vision. Now, we're celebrating the milestone of serving high-speed, reliable internet service to over 20,000 subscribers. What an accomplishment — and it only took two years. This rapid growth is all thanks to you — our member-consumers who shared with us your need for connectivity. We quickly learned it was a system-wide need, and one we were uniquely qualified to meet. When the pandemic hit last year, broadband instantly became essential to our livelihood. We always knew it was essential for distance learning, virtual healthcare and remote work, but that need made itself known a lot sooner than we anticipated. We found safe ways to continue working while businesses and schools had to close their doors. We kept going through the pandemic because the need was, and continues to be for some, so great. Our post-pandemic world will see a lot more remote learning, working from home and other virtual opportunities. We are helping ensure our members can take advantage of everything that lies ahead with high-speed internet they can depend on. Unfortunately, something that will have to wait another year is our Annual Meeting. We were looking forward to gathering with you this year, but commitments for an event of that size must be made months beforehand. We can't say with certainty what local mandates and venue policies will look like in August, so the board of trustees decided it's best to postpone the Annual Meeting until we know we can meet safely without any restrictions. We sure hope for more normalcy in 2022 and look forward to the day we can celebrate with you. Until then, know we continue doing everything we can to ensure you are receiving the most reliable electric and internet service.

Avoid placing items like lamps and televisions near your thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause your air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
RELIA [ri-lahy-uh-buhl]
adjective
that may be relied on or trusted; dependable in achievement, accuracy, honesty, etc.:
OEC is our name. Reliability is our game. As an OEC member, you already have a leg up over your investor-owned utility neighbors. How? Recent data shows investor-owned utility customers were without power 95 percent longer than OEC members in 2020. Reliability matters, and no one in central Oklahoma is doing it better than OEC. "In 2016, our members experienced an average outage time of 129 minutes for the entire year," said CEO Patrick Grace. "That number dropped to 64.5 in 2020, meaning — across the board — our members were without power for an average of one hour in 2020, which is pretty remarkable." OEC's score of 64.5 places us well below the average score among electric co-ops across the nation and takes into consideration the outage time due to our generation and transmission provider, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative. If we were to only look at the outage factors we can control, that number drops to 50.3. [5624312500] The Oklahoma Corporation Commission reported investor-

owned utility scores have a three-year average of 110 to 148 — 71 to 118 percent higher than OEC's score. If you're keeping record at home, the lower the score the better. After all, the goal is to keep the lights on.
LIGHTNING'S SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN RELIABILITY Oklahoma is the second most lightning prone state behind Texas and it showed in our electrical system prior to 2017. This helped OEC's board of trustees create a 2017 strategic initiative to address and eradicate issues caused by lightning. "I believe our system hardening initiative continues to have a major impact on these scores," said Nick Shumaker, manager of system engineering. "We emphasized the much needed upgrading of our lightning protection equipment, which has played a
ABLE O large role in reducing outage time." Proof that this focused effort is paying off can be found in the data. "Since 2016, we've been using analytics to stop outages before they occur,” said Shumaker. "We've used data to more efficiently organize our linemen and have reduced outages due to equipment failure by 80 percent. This is pretty incredible considering the number of lightning strikes in 2016 was 28,708, and in 2020 it doubled to 57,385 strikes." Strides will continue to be made in the upgrading of lightning protection equipment until all feeders on all substations are operating at a satisfactory level.
TREE TRIMMING MATTERS Vegetation management plays a large role in providing safe, reliable electricity. Co-ops and
electric companies in general sometimes get a bad rap for the role we play in the removal of trees, but our efforts help our system withstand Oklahoma's unpredictable weather. We're a fan of trees at OEC, just not intermingled with our electric lines. In fact, we encourage the safe planting of trees in a mindful location in conjunction with our infrastructure. As we saw in the October ice storm, ice accumulations on tree limbs can cause them to become too heavy for the tree to support. If trees are not planted correctly, the failed limbs will cause prolonged outages. Properly planted and well maintained trees reduce outages, especially in extreme weather. Annual vegetation management is a vital piece in keeping OEC’s outage numbers at industry leading levels. All of our efforts culminate with one mission: to improve your quality of life with the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service.

OEC Fiber reaches landmark milestone in record time 2021 is turning out to be a banner year for OEC Fiber. Mere weeks after celebrating their three-year construction anniversary, OEC Fiber has surpassed the 20,000 subscriber mark. And all of these subscribers were added in just over two years of connecting homes and businesses to our network. “I couldn’t be prouder of the work this team has done,” says OEC Fiber President, David Goodspeed. “The commitment of OEC and OEC Fiber to provide excellent service to their communities is what makes this all possible.” Bringing reliable high-speed internet and telecommunication services to our communities has become of the utmost importance in the last year. Internet has become a necessity. Not only did many schools and offices go virtual for extended periods, but many people were only able to connect with loved ones via phone and video chats. OEC Fiber’s tireless dedication to their mission to connect rural Oklahoma has made this possible. As OEC Fiber grows closer to making sure everyone can stay connected, they have one eye bent towards the future. Technology is ever changing. While we may not know what is around the bend, one thing is for certain. OEC Fiber will continue to push forward, taking much needed service where nobody else will.

GENERATE
SAFELY Help keep our linemen safe by knowing how to safely operate your generator
Provided by SafeElectricity.org Portable or permanently installed standby generators can come in handy during long-term power outages. However, if you do not know how to use them properly, they can be dangerous. Contact a qualified vendor or electrician to help you determine what generator is best suited to your needs. Before using, read and follow manufacturer’s instructions. If you are installing a permanent generator, it must have a transfer switch. The transfer switch prevents energy from leaving your generator and going back onto OEC's electrical equipment, where it could be dangerous to a lineman or others near downed power lines. A qualified electrician should install your generator and transfer switch. Safe Electricity has the following tips to use portable generators safely: Operate it outdoors in an area with plenty of ventilation. Never run a generator in a home or garage. Generators give off deadly carbon monoxide. Do not plug a generator into the wall to avoid back feed. Use heavy-duty extension cords to connect appliances to the outlets on the generator. Turn the generator on before plugging appliances to it. Once the generator is running, turn your appliances and lights on one at a time to avoid overloading the unit. Remember, generators are for temporary usage; prioritize your needs. Generators pose electrical risks, especially when operated in wet conditions. Use a generator only when necessary when the weather creates wet or moist conditions. Protect the generator by operating it under an open, canopylike structure on a dry surface where water cannot form puddles or drain under it. Always ensure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Be sure the generator is turned off and cool before fueling it.

Keep children and pets away from portable generators. Many generator components are hot enough to burn you during operation. Safe Electricity suggests these safety guidelines and basic operating instructions be posted in the home and with the generator.
Generate Safely. Never use a portable generator indoors. Do not plug generators into standard electrical outlets. Use heavy-duty extension cords to connect appliances into the generator. Start the generator before connecting appliances.
stay SAFE Keeping you safe during and after summer storms By Laura Cook No one knows electrical safety better than the experts who practice it every single day. OEC encourages you to practice safety with these reminders – for during and after a summer storm: Avoid wires and water — When lightning strikes a home during a storm, the electrical charge can surge through pipes and utility wires. That means you can get zapped if you’re touching water or any device that’s plugged in, whether it’s a landline phone or toaster. Skip the makeshift shelter — During a storm, it's tempting to take cover under a picnic gazebo or golf cart, but in open-sided structures with no conductors to channel strikes, a bolt's path of least resistance to the ground could be you. On top of that, these structures raise your risk of a lightning strike because of their height. Keep moving toward suitable shelter. Portable generators — Take special care with portable generators, which can provide a good source of power, but if improperly installed or operated, can become deadly. Do not connect
generators directly to household wiring. Power from generators can back-feed along power lines and electrocute anyone coming in contact with them, including co-op line workers making repairs. It’s best to hire a qualified, licensed electrician to install your generator and ensure that it meets local electrical codes. Flooded areas — Stay away from downed power lines and avoid walking through flooded areas. Power lines could be submerged and still live with electricity. Report any downed lines you see to OEC by calling 405-3212024 immediately. Electrical equipment — Never use electrical equipment that is wet – especially outdoor electrical equipment, which could be a potential danger after a summer storm. Water can damage electrical equipment and parts, posing a shock or fire hazard. OEC has served our local community since 1937, and safety for our members is our number one concern. young leaders
RISE to the occasion
2021 Leadership Summit scholarships awarded to Youth Tour runners-up OEC awarded two $500 scholarships in March to Youth Tour runners-up Destiny Ryan and Somtoo Nkurumeh of Westmoore High School. The two stellar students were also selected to attend the 2021 Leadership Summit. Leadership Summit, a one-day leadership workshop where those in attendance learn team-building and leadership skills, took place March 15 at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. "I absolutely loved [Leadership Summit]," said Ryan. "The speakers talked how to develop a strong personal drive in leadership, how to look at situations from a different perspective and even the importance of failing." Leadership Summit, organized by Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives, gathered students from our sister co-ops across the state, taking into consideration social distancing and mask-wearing. Rhett Laubach, founder of YourNextSpeaker, LLC and a wellrespected, trained youth leadership developer, and Kelly Barnes conducted the program. "After being forced to cancel Leadership Summit in 2020 due to the pandemic, I was happy this year's winners were able to experience it," said OEC Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland. "I'm always proud of the outstanding kids who represent OEC and know Destiny and Somtoo will grow into great leaders of their communities." Congratulations to Destiny and Somtoo!

GENEROSITY brings P
SMILES
After being shut down for one full year due to COVID-19 precautions, MobileSmiles Oklahoma went back on the road in March. The OEC Foundation sponsors the host location for the mobile dental unit—a project of the Oklahoma Dental Foundation. The RV unit has two dental chairs and can see up to 10 patients per day. Services are free of charge to the patient. “MobileSmiles keeps my teeth from going mobile,” joked Michael Erickson, a MobileSmiles patient from Newalla. MobileSmiles travels to different areas and certified, volunteer dentists treat a number of qualified patients each day. MobileSmiles has saved local patients tens of thousands of dollars since 2018 by holding events all across OEC's service area. One of these events was held in April at Hilltop Baptist Church in rural northeast Norman, southeast Oklahoma City. OEC Foundation board member Vickie Gray initiated the event and the church pitched in to make it a success. Pastor Matt Hardin said, “Dental care is something we all need and the people out here are very thankful. We hope to host more events to reach more people.” Vicki Travis, Mastercare Food Pantry coordinator, was also instrumental in making the event successful through working with Director Gray on outreach and scheduling. [1526401001] Following Hilltop, Director Gray helped coordinate another MobileSmiles stop at the Little Axe Community Center, thanks to Recreation Supervisor Gabby McGarrah who helped ensure this event reached those in the Little Axe community. MobileSmiles is just one program made possible by the thousands of OEC members who choose to round up their electric bills to the nearest dollar each month. Operation Round Up® (ORU) applications — individual and organizational — are available at www.okcoop.org/ORU. Applications submitted by May 17 will be reviewed at the next meeting. Contact Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland at ORU@okcoop.org or 405-217-6726 for questions regarding the program or application process.
