This time last year, an ice storm knocked out power to almost 20,000 members and destroyed poles in all seven counties we serve. The weather threw us a curveball again this October as severe weather took out 120 poles, forcing 10,616 members to be without power while repairs were made. Knowing October is the third highest month for tornadoes in Oklahoma, we were prepared for what came our way.

The board of directors has been very proactive in its approach to preventing outages as they've prioritized system upgrades and other measures in the last six years — investing dollars and work into creating a more reliable system for the members we serve. This includes installing lightning arresters to protect our equipment from the damaging effects of lightning, as well as smart devices that allow us to more quickly and effectively control parts of our system from our office. Managing vegetation growth also plays a large part in preventing outages. We continue to see benefits from keeping our lines and rights-of-way clear from branches and other vegetation that could interfere with your power. Strengthening our infrastructure to have the capability to serve fiber-to-the-home helps play a role in preventing outages, too.

A few short years ago, replacing 120 poles could’ve taken a week or longer. I’m proud of our crews and contractor crews who worked nonstop until all members’ power was restored less than 48 hours after the storms rolled through. It’s impressive to see our teams jump into action when an event like this occurs — from lineworkers and dispatchers to member services and more. Thanks to everyone who helped make this less impactful than it could’ve been.

Speaking of impact, our thirteen linemen who traveled to Louisiana in August returned home safely. They spent time away from their families providing much-needed mutual aid to electric cooperative personnel near Baton Rouge, restoring power to their members. I appreciate their dedication to the cooperative mission and principles, as well as all of our employees who jump in wherever they're needed when the time comes.

Four deserving students travel with the Oklahoma delegation (70+ students) to our nation’s capital where they tour historic sites and national landmarks, meet Oklahoma’s congressional delegation and more.

Currently, the Youth Tour trip is scheduled for June 17-23, 2022. The safety of all involved remains our top priority, and OEC will follow the lead of the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) and the National Rural Electric Cooperative

SPEECH WORKSHOP Eight finalists are required to attend a half-day speech workshop to be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022. There, they will learn techniques to hone their speech craft and visual presentation skills as well as co-op information.

LIVE PRESENTATION Finalists will present their co-op ideas live before three judges on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at a banquet held at OEC's headquarters.

In this contest, judges look for each applicant's power of persuasion – first in writing and then in oration. They need to be convinced your co-op will satisfy an unmet need or solve a problem that no other group or company has solved. Be sure to convince judges that the “unmet need or problem” is something they should care about.

Making a connection with the audience is vital for the success of the proposed co-op. [Think Shark Tank for co-ops.]

Applicants are encouraged to choose their co-ops carefully and pick a topic they care about — use phrases and examples that will connect to the judges.

Whether providing a service or educating the public, sharing information in a timely manner is crucial. This is especially true for one local wildlife care organization that OEC Fiber has been able to help transform.

native wildlife struggling to survive with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. They provide food, shelter and top-notch medical care to more than 240 different species of native wildlife that are ill, injured or orphaned.

“Most people don’t have the knowledge or the resources to properly help. We provide a place for those

people to bring the animals where they know they will get the very best possible care,” said Inger Giuffrida, WildCare Executive Director.

Their dedicated team made up of staff and volunteers provide aroundthe-clock care for over 7,000 animals each year. WildCare typically has anywhere between five and 600 animals on the property at any one time. That number can climb as high as 1,000 during “baby season” in the spring and summer.

Just as important as the care provided to the animals, is the education WildCare delivers to the public. A large percentage of the animals brought in are the result of avoidable negative human interactions.

“In some ways, we’re like the Lorax for wildlife,” Giuffrida said. “We speak for the animals.”

WildCare uses social media to help share information and give presentations on the proper care and interaction with animals whenever possible. This education and outreach have helped keep countless animals from being brought to their center each year.

Still, the most significant percentage of information is shared via phone.

Individuals like Kristy Wicker, WildCare Education and Outreach Coordinator, spend hours on the phone each day speaking with concerned individuals that want to help members of Oklahoma’s native wildlife.

“There’s not a lot of places that people can go for good information

about wildlife, and I find that people are desperate for that information,” Wicker said.

People call from all over Oklahoma and the surrounding states with questions about what they’ve seen and how they can help an animal in crisis. Without a reliable phone service, keeping access to this information for people is nearly impossible.

“Every time it rained, we had no phone service,” Giuffrida said of their previous service provider.

Their remote location makes cell service non-existent on much of the property. Add in the service disruptions, and people often found themselves struggling to reach them or even leave a message.

One additional issue they faced was being limited to a single phone line.

This left people waiting to hear back from them, but with the unreliability of their service, those callbacks didn’t always happen.

Being able to make and receive multiple calls with OEC Fiber’s phone service not only allows them to reach more people, but the online portal gives them access to a variety of valuable features that ensure those who want to speak with someone on the phone can.

“Having that quality of service out here in the middle of nowhere is incredible.” Wicker said.

They had anticipated ongoing reliability issues after switching to OEC Fiber, but no such problems occurred.

WildCare is one of the ten largest

wildlife centers in the country but operates on a fraction of the budget.

“Our budget should be somewhere like $1.5 million. It’s $708,000,” Giuffrida said.

Most of their funding comes from donations. Even checks of $25 make a lasting impact. When you work on this kind of budget, finding a way to cut costs without sacrificing service is a necessity.

“Internet and phone [costs] have gone down a lot [with OEC Fiber].

Again, that idea of being able to stretch a dollar, you’ve helped us stretch those dollars even more,” Giuffrida said.

WildCare helps people learn how to better coexist with the animals they encounter and save countless Oklahoma wildlife each year through their education efforts.

“By caring for animals, we become better humans. We are a more human culture by caring for those that cannot care for themselves,” Giuffrida said.

Members will receive a detailed report on site along with information on steps they can take to expand their home's efficiency.

Twenty OEC and OEC Fiber employees teamed up with Food and Shelter during United Way of Norman's (UWN) Day of Caring (DOC). The annual service event brings together hundreds of volunteers from businesses in Cleveland County to perform much-needed projects for nonprofit organizations.

"I enjoy seeing so many members of our community come together to help out our often-struggling nonprofits complete projects they might not be able to perform due to budget restraints, staffing and the necessary time commitment," said OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland, who also served on the DOC planning committee.

OEC's volunteer group spent time repairing and staining the fence surrounding McKown Tiny House Village. The team also completed landscaping and yard work around the property. It was a busy day filled with rewarding work for a deserving organization.

“I always love to see the business community come together during DOC and serve these nonprofits in such impactful ways,” said Kayla Wade, OEC Fiber creative director. “I’m especially proud to be part of an organization that places such a high priority on serving our communities in every way possible.”

The mission of Food and Shelter, the organization with which OEC and OEC Fiber employees were paired, is very simple.

"We feed those who are hungry and wrap our arms around the lost and alone, helping them find their way back home. We believe no person can overcome life's most difficult obstacles if they are hungry and worried constantly about where they will sleep. The services we provide are the most basic needs of a human being; food and shelter.

Women, children and men come for food and shelter. They leave with friends, a support system, and acceptance. They find home."

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. BEEF & LENTIL STEW Ingredients 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 pound flank steak, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 2 tablespoons oil, or more as needed 4 carrots, chopped 1 onion, diced 1 stalk celery, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced

1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes 1 cup dry lentils 4 cups beef broth 2 teaspoons dried rosemary 11 ounces baby potatoes with skin 1 pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions Pour flour into a shallow bowl and dust steak with flour. Heat oil in a large skillet over high heat and sear beef on all sides until browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Add carrots, onion, celery, and garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add more oil if necessary.

Add tomatoes with juice, lentils, beef broth, rosemary, and browned beef pieces to the skillet and stir well. Reduce heat, cover pot halfway with a lid, and simmer for 40 minutes.

Add potatoes to the skillet. Simmer until lentils and potatoes are soft, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
