Hidden Account Numbers Worth $500

Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached. 1. One of the hidden account numbers must be your own. 2. You must advise OEC by phone, mail or in person at the co-op’s office by the 15th of the month. If you find your account number call the Member Relations department at 217-6708.

Operation Round Up funds to assist Operation School Bell

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • November 2016

T

he OEC Foundation, Inc. over the past 14 years has donated over $130,000 to the Assistance League of Norman (ALN) for its Operation School Bell program. The tradition continued in October when the Foundation’s board of directors granted $10,000 to the organization. “We are proud to support such a generous cause in the community,” said Joyce Wallace, OEC Foundation board president. “Operation School Bell is a staple each year for those who cannot afford to send their children to school with the supplies and clothing they need.” Operation School Bell allows volunteers to assist students from Norman area schools in selecting new school clothes in a retail-like environment. The Operation Round Up® donation will assist in purchasing shoes for 500 students. “We provide new clothing such as jeans, tops, undergarments and coats,” said Rose Marie Sondergeld, ALN grants and awards chairperson. “Children are referred to our program by their teachers and school counselors.” In addition to ALN’s grant, several nonprofits were also approved for donations at the Oct. 6 meeting. Norman Lions Club received a

$5,000 donation to assist in eye care funding. McClain County Sheriff ’s Office Reserve Deputy Division and the City of Noble Fire Department each received $3,000 grants; Mission Norman, Inc.’s $1,199.98 donation will be used to purchase a new copier; and the Blanchard Lions Special Olympics team received $1,500 to participate in next year’s Special Olympics. Several individuals also received assistace, as well. Over $4,900 is earmarked for hearing aids, dentures, eye classes, dental care and basic needs. Grants from the Operation Round Up program are made possible thanks to OEC members who elect to round up their electric bills to the nearest dollar each month. The accumulated change is granted to organizations, individuals and families in OEC’s service area via the Operation Round Up program. Grant recipients are not required to be OEC members, and grants may not be issued for utility bills, rent or mortgage payments. Applications — individual/ family and organizational — may be found at www.okcoop.org/ORU. Those submitted by Nov. 28 will be reviewed at a meeting Dec. 8.

Contact Tory Tedder-Loffland at 217-6726 or ORU@okcoop.org if you have any questions about the program or the application process.

A

recent cost of service study revealed a wide gap between OEC’s true fixed costs and our rates’ fixed costs. As a result, the service availability charge will increase from 60¢ to 75¢ per day, effective Jan. 1, 2017. “According to that same cost of service study, our service availability charge should be $53 per month,” said Patrick Grace, CEO. “Currently, that charge is $18. When the increase takes effect, it will be $22.50, which is still less than half what it should be.” WHAT ARE FIXED COSTS? Almost all of OEC’s operating costs are fixed. Whether a member uses 1 kilowatt hour (kWh) per month or 1,000 kWhs, the same amount of infrastructure and materials are needed to provide electricity.

In addition, linemen, bucket trucks and maintenance dollars are needed on a daily basis to ensure that infrastructure operates reliably and efficiently, which can be difficult in unpredictable Oklahoma weather. These are all fixed costs for OEC and, again, are all needed no matter how many kilowatt hours our members use. “Electric consumers in general believe we should pay only for what we use,” Grace continued. “It takes a very big investment to provide electricity, but our rates do not currently reflect that.” WILL PART OF THE RATE DECREASE? In order to keep the rate adjustment from being a rate increase, other areas of OEC’s residential and small commercial rates will see price decreases.

First, April, November and December bills will be considered part of the lower winter rate (they are currently part of the shoulder rate). Second, usage on the winter rate in excess of 1,000 kWhs will be reduced from 6.5252¢ to 6¢ per kWh. “Lowering the per kWh rate in excess of 1,000 in the winter will be huge for all-electric homes,” said Grace. “Plus, all members could see savings as a result of their April, November and December bills being part of the winter rate.” It’s important to remember — like all products, goods and services — costs will continue to rise: production costs, delivery costs, materials and maintenance costs, etc. OEC continually evaluates all options and works hard to ensure members are paying a fair and reasonable price for their electricity.

embers will begin seeing a sleek, new bill design beginning in November following a six month redesign process. “Over the years, members have routinely called in confused by their bills,” said Amy McElhany, manager of member service. “The new bills are easier to comprehend and — thanks to the added pops of color — point members to the most important information.” Changes include an enhanced usage history chart, added SmartHub information, a Cooperative News section and scaled down technical data. “This new bill design allows us an extra channel in which to communicate to our members,” said Jonna Buck, VP of administration. “The cut-off notice versions also underwent a redesign and have bold red print that is easy to identify.” [2936404159] Members may view in-depth meter usage data by logging into their OEC SmartHub account at www.okcoop.org. 20154014

Jeanie Lee awarded Marsha Potts Customer Service Award

ongratulations are in order for Jeanie Lee, senior member service associate, who brought home the Marsha Potts Customer Service Memorial Award from Exceleron’s national conference in Nashville, Tennessee. “Jeanie has been instrumental in the success of our prepaid program,” said Jonna Buck, VP of administration. “She is an advocate for the prepaid program to our members who are grateful we have that option.” Lee has been at the forefront of OEC’s prepaid program since its earliest stages, offering the service to thousands of members over the

past eight years. Many members have appreciated Lee’s service so much, they have written lengthy letters complimenting her helpful, caring style of member service. “Jeanie consistently uses the prepaid option as an essential tool in her arsenal,” said Amy McElhany, manager of member service. “No matter the situation, she has always worked to create win-win solutions for OEC and our membership.” Lee joined OEC in 2007 and quickly became a beloved member of the member service team. Congratulations, Jeanie, on a well-deserved award and for always looking out for OEC’s members.

Linemen Clint Yeary (pictured below) and Travis Barton attended the Pioneer Library System’s Touch-A-Truck Sept. 24. Children were free to climb aboard their favorite large vehicles, including OEC digger and bucket trucks, food trucks, emergency response vehicles, tractors and more. Drivers and experts were on hand to answer any and all questions attendees had about the equipment.

Inaugural Employee Development and Leadership Program class celebrates completion

wenty-seven employees completed the first-ever Employee Development and Leadership Program (EDLP). Spanning two years, the program consisted of classroom courses, the reading of leadership books, job shadowing, volunteer work, touring other cooperatives, giving a presentation and more. “I’m proud to see a dedicated group of employees not only finish this program, but help shape what

it has become,” said CEO Patrick Grace, whose forward-thinking vision for the cooperative led to the program’s creation. The EDLP began as an initiative to motivate employees to develop a knowledge base of all facets of the coop, not just the areas in which they work. The program has accomplished just that, and it continues today with the graduation of the first group, the continuation of the second group and the beginning of the third group.

“Overall, 46 employees are either in the program or have graduated from it,” Grace said. “That’s over 30 percent of our workforce that has demonstrated they want to learn more about the co-op and become more well-rounded employees so they can better serve our members.” Congratulations to the 27 employees who have completed the EDLP.
