Hidden Account Number Worth $200 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners. Three rural fire departments to benefit from Operation Round Up’s latest grants

The OEC Foundation, Inc. board of directors has long been dedicated to funding the needs of local rural fire departments. While it cannot fulfill all of the requests submitted, the board likes to help whenever and however possible. “These small volunteer fire departments depend on charitable donations to function,” said Lloyd Gramling, board president. “We should all be grateful for the service they provide to our communities. Without them, the likeliness of our property or homes being damaged by fires would be much higher.” Through the Operation Round Up® program, $3,000 grants were awarded to the Lexington Fire Department, Verden Fire Department and Tuttle Fire Department Volunteers. The funds will assist the departments with construction and maintenance costs, equipment racks and automatic external defibrillators. “We have been able to purchase new gear, but we are out of funds to properly store it,” said Brandon Sanders, fire chief of Verden Fire Department. “By properly storing it on equipment racks, it will allow the gear to dry when units return with mud and snow, and they will be kept

free of bugs, spiders and mice.” All three fire departments will be able to use the funds to continue providing quality fire protection for their rural neighbors, something OEC members make possible each month by ‘rounding up’ their electric bills. Other agencies benefitting from grants at the March 12 meeting include American Red Cross of Central and Southwest Oklahoma’s local disaster relief program ($10,000), Transition House, Inc.’s transitional living program ($10,000) and Lexington-Purcell’s Special Olympics Athletes ($1,600). The OEC Foundation board also awarded grants to 12 individuals for eye care and glasses, dentures, groceries and children’s clothing. The Operation Round Up program exists because of members who elect to round up their electric bills each month to the nearest dollar. The difference is combined with that of the 36,500 other members who participate. A nine-member board of directors meets every six-to-eight weeks to distribute the funds. Any person or nonprofit organization in OEC’s service area may apply for assistance through the program. Applications received by April 20 will be reviewed at a meeting held on

National Lineman Appreciation Day is April 13 OEC celebrates National Lineman Appreciation Day

merica’s electric cooperatives have designated the second Monday of April as National Lineman Appreciation Day. On April 13, 2015, OEC will honor the hard working men who often work in challenging conditions to keep the lights on. The full text of the resolution, which the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Board adopted unanimously, follows: “Whereas linemen leave their families and put their lives on the line every day to keep the power on; Whereas linemen work 365 days a year under dangerous conditions to build, maintain and repair the electric infrastructure; Whereas linemen are

the first responders of the electric cooperative family, getting power back on and making things safe for all after storms and accidents; and Whereas there would be no electric cooperatives without the brave men and women who comprise our corps of linemen; Therefore be it resolved that NRECA recognizes the Second Monday of April of each year as National Lineman Appreciation Day and make available to electric cooperatives, materials and support to recognize the contributions of these valuable men and women to America’s Electric Cooperatives.” We proudly recognize all electric linemen for the services they perform

around the clock in dangerous conditions to keep power flowing and protect the public’s safety. “Electric linemen do not often receive the recognition they deserve,” said Max Meek, OEC CEO. “They work all hours of the day, often in hazardous conditions far from their families, going above and beyond to restore power to their communities. Our linemen, as well as linemen from across the nation, truly deserve this special day of recognition.” OEC invites members to take a moment to thank a lineman for the work they do. he deadline is quickly approaching for eighth graders interested in applying for a spot at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Energy Camp. Those looking for an action-packed four-day experience learning about co-ops and making new friends have until April 6 to submit an essay and entry form. Energy Camp will be held May 2629 at Canyon Camp and Conference Center near Hinton. OEC will select up to five eighth graders to attend, and they will join 90 others from across the state as they form and operate their own co-op and learn

OEC prepares to pay $5 million in capital credits to co-op members

s we announced last month, OEC’s board of trustees has authorized the distribution of over $5 million in capital credits to members of the cooperative who purchased electricity during the years of 2006 and 2007. More than 28,800 current members and 6,600 former members are set to receive a check when they are mailed in August, given no major expenses occur – like a tornado or ice storm – between now and then. Capital credits are similar to the dividends paid to shareholders of investor-owned utilities, except the co-op’s “shareholders” are the members it serves, and the “dividends” are the capital credits.

Despite a diligent effort to notify former co-op members, there are more than 3,000 who still need to update their addresses in order to receive their capital credits. If you see your name on the list of names on the following pages and you were an OEC member during the years listed, please fill out and return the form below. All address updates must be done in writing. If you see the name of a family member who is deceased and you are the rightful heir, you can complete the form on page 23 and return it along with the appropriate paperwork to transfer all remaining capital credits into your name. The average capital credit refund

will be $100. However, checks will not be issued for less than $25 unless a member has no further refunds due for future years. Refunds of less than $25 are retained until and added to the next retirement. The list of names printed in this magazine is of former members who have not verified their current address. CRANBERRY SALAD

ANNA MARIE TEEL

 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries, 1/2 package, chopped  1 cup canned mandarin oranges juice pack (drained), chopped lightly  3 small fresh apples or 2 large, chopped  1/2 cup uncooked celery, chopped  1/2 tsp. sugar substitute  1 package Jell-O gelatin dessert, low calorie, sugar-free, cherry, 4-serving size

Chop cranberries, apples, celery and oranges. Add sugar substitute and prepared jello. Mix and place in refrigerator until gelatin is set, or overnight. Total recipe Weight Watcher PointsPlus: 10; 6 servings: 2 PointsPlus per serving; 8 servings: 1 PointsPlus per serving.

Spring is finally here, and I am excited to share two recipes submitted by members this month. Occasionally, members will send in recipes, and, after holding on to these fruity treats for a while, it’s now a good time to share them with the rest of you. The two recipes featured this month combine fresh fruits to make sweet and savory springtime snacks. Thank you to Anna Marie Teel of Midwest City and Laura Means-Tysor of Moore for graciously sharing these delectable recipes. Anna Marie’s Cranberry Salad is one she created and shared on Weight Watchers’ website. It combines cranberries, mandarin oranges, apples, celery, a sugar substitute and gelatin to make the perfect (and healthy!) snack – one serving is only one “PointsPlus” value. Chopped pecans can also be added but will change the point value. Laura’s key lime pudding contains two ingredients and optional toppings. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this tart pudding and can have fun topping it with whipped cream and graham cracker crumbs. educing household energy use doesn’t mean doing without. It doesn’t require walking around your house wearing extra sweaters and earmuffs in the dead of winter, or stripping down to the bare essentials in the summer. It means being smarter about how you manage the energy you do use. Consider OEC your trusted resource for exploring energy-saving strategies. Energy efficiency means performing the same job and getting a similar outcome using less energy. This efficiency is often achieved through a mechanical change, such as replacing an older, less efficient appliance or mechanical unit with a new model, but sometimes a minor change of habit is all that’s needed. Examples could include dimming lights, turning down the thermostat or washing clothes in cold water instead of hot. THE BENEFITS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CONSERVATION So why are energy conservation and energy efficiency more important than

ever to our members? What are the benefits of efficiency and conservation? The short answer is that energy reduction in your home 1) saves you money; 2) improves our economy by enabling consumers and businesses to spend and invest in other areas; and 3) reduces the amount of pollution emitted from power generation. The more complex answer is that consumers are more reliant on devices, computers, phones (with charging stations), sophisticated media/home entertainment and video gaming systems, and “smart” technology that all rely on electricity. The wide array of new electronic devices is improving our quality of life, and electric co-ops are promoting efficiency to bring new conveniences at a lower cost. ENERGY EFFICIENCY: THE “FIRST FUEL” In this period of rapidly changing technology, Americans are increasingly aware of the need to reduce energy consumption. Many now call energy savings the “first fuel” because the easiest way to reduce fuel cost and

carbon emissions is to save energy. Energy is a valuable commodity, and while the discussions over climate change and carbon footprints continue, we must all do our part to conserve this precious resource. Using less energy may even boost the economy by relieving the ever-tightening family budget, allowing dollars to be spent on more tangible goods. Americans have demonstrated a willingness to take steps toward reducing their energy consumption, both to save money and out of concern for the environment. According to the January 2014 Nielson U.S. Consumer Energy Sentiments Report, 91 percent of consumers are willing to change their energy-use behavior to save money on energy costs.
