TOP Patrick Grace, CEO

If you were able to make it out to the 81st Annual Meeting Aug. 10, thank you. I hope you and your family enjoyed the barbecue dinner, the entertainment, prizes and everything else we had in store for you. It was my third Annual Meeting at the helm, and I always enjoy the opportunity to meet and speak with our valued members. For those who have attended the Annual Meeting for years, you might have noticed the barbecue dinner was a bit different. The caterer we partnered with for years, End O' Main out of Watonga, went out of business about two years ago — about the same time as the Lloyd Noble Center began construction for the new Blake Griffin Performance Center. This year, we partnered with Adventures in Catering which provided a great meal. In addition, the Lloyd Noble Center increased its security requirements, but the night still went off without a hitch. Members and their families in attendance seemed satisfied and engaged. We had a great turn-out and we couldn't be happier to have seen so many of you. It's no surprise that OEC Fiber was a hot topic at the Annual Meeting. We know there's tremendous interest in this service, and we're working as quickly and safely as we can to get it to you. Rural broadband is not easy, which is why the big names aren't pursuing it. Listening to your stories and hearing your need only reinforced that we're doing this for the right reasons — we're doing what is best for our members. Be sure to read page 6 for more detailed information about OEC Fiber. I personally thank you for your continued patience as we build out this project and your continued trust in us. Over 7,000 of you attended the Annual Meeting and we received nearly 800 surveys. Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback. Our staff and board reviews each and every comment, and we try our best to implement what we can the following year. We are always listening and welcome conversation with you. Again, thank you for attending and taking an active role in your cooperative. We'll see you again next year.

OEC Foundation continues support of Meals on Wheels

T

he OEC Foundation, created in 1993, has a long history of supporting local organizations and families in OEC's service area through the Operation Round Up® program. Its support of Meals on Wheels of Norman dates back almost to the beginning of the Foundation — 1996 — and the board ensured that support would continue when it granted the organization $9,000 to serve nutritious meals to the ill, disabled and elderly across Cleveland County. "There are services our community has come to rely on, and Meals on Wheels is one of those," said Joyce Wallace, OEC Foundation board president. "We are proud to partner with these organizations to ensure everyone in our communities is well cared for." Meals on Wheels of Norman received $9,000 to continue its Free Meal program that will provide 2,894 meals to seniors and homebound clients. The board also granted Camp Kesem at the University of Oklahoma $2,000. Camp Kesem supports children through and beyond their parents' cancer with innovative, fun-filled programming. Norman Affordable Housing Corporation received $5,000 for bedding for homeless people being housed, and seven individuals and families received assistance with dentures, air conditioner repair and school clothes. Grants from the Operation Round Up program are made possible by members who choose to round up their electric bills each month. Applications — individual/family and organizational — may be found at www.okcoop.org/ORU. Those submitted by Sept. 7 will be reviewed at a meeting Sept. 27. Contact Tory Tedder-Loffland at 217-6726 or ORU@okcoop.org if you have any questions about the program or the application process.

WFEC GENERATION REPORT Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

EC's Autumn McMahon, manager of marketing and member relations, received the United Way of Norman Inspire Award Aug. 20 in recognition of her dedication to and leadership of the Teen Advisors of Norman (TAN) program. TAN includes high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who want to identify problems and issues that kids, teens and families face, and address a way to solve them. This involves fundraising, volunteer work, monthly meetings and a commitment to the cause. McMahon was one of the high school students who founded the program in 2002. Full steam ahead for OEC Fiber By Kayla Brandt

A

ll summer, OEC Fiber networking and construction crews have been building a broadband network to bring you high-speed internet. You may have seen some crews working near your home or office making the magic happen. While there's still a way to go, we’re getting closer every day. We hope you were able to attend OEC's 81st Annual Meeting Aug. 10. We were absolutely thrilled to see how many of you are interested in OEC Fiber and bringing our services to your communities. When we say we’re taking high-speed internet where no one else will, we really mean it. “With fiber connections all the way into the home or business, we are not slowing the connection down with copper wire or connections outside of the building. You will receive true fiber speeds,” said David Goodspeed, OEC Fiber president. “In addition, we will never slow you down by throttling your speeds. What you pay for is what you get.” Fiber internet is capable of bringing you the fastest internet on the market today. We will offer affordable high-speed fiber solutions for homes and businesses of all sizes. With the excitement around OEC Fiber building, we know many of you are wondering how much our packages will cost. We are still working on finalizing several internal processes before we can officially announce pricing. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to sign up for updates at www.oecfiber.com to be sure you’re the first to know when we announce our pricing. “Because we are able to use OEC’s existing electrical infrastructure to build out our network, we are able to bring you quality, high-speed fiber services at some of the lowest rates in the business,” said Goodspeed.

FIBER RING MAP Has our ring map left you with questions about our accessibility and timeline? We have some answers to common questions below to help explain the map further.

WHAT IF I’M NOT INSIDE A RING? These rings simply represent our basic infrastructure. Just because you're outside of a ring doesn't mean we won't be coming your way. We will build from and into these rings. Make sure you're signed up for updates at www.oecfiber.com so we can gauge your interest.

6

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • September 2018

HOW QUICKLY CAN YOU GET TO MY HOME OR BUSINESS? How quickly we make it to your home or business depends on where you are located on the map and in relation to the rings. Once our fiber optic network rings are constructed, we will be able to begin hooking up homes and businesses that lie within a certain radius of the ring lines. And don’t worry if you aren’t in that approximate 500-foot radius — it doesn’t mean we won’t be hooking you up! It just means you may need to be a bit more patient as we continue to our construction process. [1118410201] As we continue hitting milestones on our end, we will continue to update you with more information. Visit www.oecfiber.com for more information and to make sure you're hearing the news first.

DO YOU OWN AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE? Be one of the first 50 people to sign up for OEC’s EV Incentive program! • Half-price rate from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (prime car-charging time) — only 6¢/kWh! • Receive a $450 rebate for a level 2 charging station (current or new)

ourteen OEC employees on Aug. 22 spent the afternoon volunteering at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma's Moore Food and Resource Center as part of OEC Empowers, an internal initiative encouraging employees to give back to the communities we serve. "The Moore Food and Resource Center is a vital part of the community of Moore that helps feed thousands of families each month," said Brianna Wall, editorial and events coordinator. "Many of the employees who volunteered — including myself — live in Moore and are proud to give back to a community that gives us so much." Volunteers sorted produce, stocked the freezer and refrigerators, organized the warehouse, helped clients shop for groceries and offered smiling faces to all who came through the center that day. "We could not have helped feed over 110 families if it weren't for the efforts of OEC's employees," said Moore Food and Resource Center Director Skyler Parker. "We are grateful for their hearts to volunteer and for the leadership at OEC to allow them the opportunity." The Moore Food and Resource Center, located at 2635 North Shields in Moore, serves clients in Moore and south Oklahoma City. OEC, Little Axe Public Schools shine light on LED rebate program

O

EC cut a big check to Little Axe Public Schools — $27,936 — as a rebate for the schools’ recent transition to LED lighting. Little Axe replaced every light bulb on its property with an LED version totaling over 4,500 lamps. “It was a pretty big initial investment,” said Little Axe Superintendent Jay Thomas. “But, we are already reaping the benefits.” LEDs use 60 to 80 percent less energy than traditional lighting methods, estimates the U.S. Department of Energy. Quality LED bulbs will last 25 times longer than traditional bulbs which can more than make up for the initial investment. They have the additional advantages of burning cooler, being a more efficient task light and as they contain no mercury, they are more environmentally friendly. [6511130806] Little Axe completed its retrofit in May and has already experienced a 12 percent kilowatt hour (kWh) reduction — significant savings considering it includes only one month of school. While Little Axe is the first school to take advantage of OEC’s LED retrofit program, it won’t be the last. “We are ecstatic to offer this cost-savings program to the schools we serve,” said Tory Tedder-Loffland, OEC education and outreach coordinator. “We hope it alleviates some of the pain of recent budget cuts and helps create a positive educational environment for students.” The LED retrofit program is a partnership between OEC and its power supplier, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, and is available to schools, churches and commercial consumer-members. OEC also offers efficiency rebates for the installation of heat pumps and electric water heaters. Visit www.okcoop.org to learn more about our rebate program. To find out more about the program and savings, contact Randy Harnsberger, key accounts manager at 217-6708 or randyh@okcoop.org.
