TERPENES Pinene It happens to be that season and it would only be right to discuss Pinene this month for our column. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in various plants, including the cannabis plant. They are responsible for the distinctive flavors and aromas associated with different strains of cannabis. Terpenes also play a role in the overall effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis, often working in conjunction with cannabinoids like THC and CBD. Pinene is one of the terpenes found in cannabis, and it has a distinct pine scent, as the name suggests. There are two primary types of pinene: Alpha-pinene: This is the most common terpene in nature and is found in many coniferous trees, pine needles, rosemary, and sage. Alpha-pinene is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties and may act as a bronchodilator, helping to open up the airways. Some research also suggests that it could have potential memory-enhancing effects. Beta-pinene: This is another form of pinene with a slightly different chemical structure. It is also found in coniferous trees and some herbs. Pinene is not unique to cannabis; it's found in various plants and is part of what gives certain strains their distinctive aroma. When present in cannabis, pinene can contribute to the overall effects and characteristics of the cultivar, potentially influencing factors such as mood, alertness, and respiratory function. As with other terpenes, pinene's effects may be modulated by the presence of cannabinoids and other terpenes in the cannabis plant. Pinene, a terpene found in cannabis as well as various other plants, has been studied for its potential medicinal effects. Such as Pine trees, sage, rosemary and basil just to name a few. It’s important to note that much of the research on pinene is preliminary, and more studies are needed to fully understand its therapeutic benefits.
