Affiliated Funds: An Alternative to a Private Foundation

When Carolyn Watson established the Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation as an affiliated fund in 1995, her goal was to bring cultural opportunities to rural classrooms and communities. Thanks to a grant from the fund, Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park’s “Short Shakespeare” does just that. Their touring production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” brings live theatre to rural schools while making Shakespeare more accessible to students.

If you are considering creating a private foundation, an affiliated fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation is a tax-wise alternative that allows you to maintain involvement while we handle the administrative responsibilities.

Affiliated funds are:

- Similar in structure and function to a private foundation, but with fewer restrictions and favorable tax treatment.

- Considered supporting organizations of the Oklahoma City

Community Foundation that operate under separate governing documents and trustees.

- Permanent endowments established with a minimum of

$1 million and an annual percentage available for grants to qualified charities as determined by the trustees of the fund.
