The Oklahoma Youth Expo has grown and evolved for more than a century, providing opportunities for Oklahoma’s ag youth. In 2002, a group of visionaries came together and formally established a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, naming it the Oklahoma Youth Expo Inc. Among those visionaries were Mr. Bob Funk and Mr. Jimmy Harrel. Together, along with a committed board of directors, the Youth Expo grew and today has become the leader in livestock shows. However, this growth and development did not happen overnight. Funding an ever-growing event poses challenges, challenges the board and staff happily and successfully manage each year. In 2016, Mr. Bob Funk stepped forward in a large way announcing his commitment to the Oklahoma Youth Expo by forming an endowment fund. Later that year, the Onward Campaign was launched. Mr. Funk pledged to match dollar-for-dollar up to $5 million in order to ensure the continued success of OYE for generations to come. To date, more than $4 million has been raised to help support the Youth Expo’s mission in providing Oklahoma 4-H and FFA members with opportunities to showcase their agricultural projects and further foster their future education goals, their leadership skills, and their ability to truly provide and contribute to society. Joins us as we move onward so the Oklahoma Youth Expo can be here for decades to come. For more information on OYE ONWARD, please contact tyler@okyouthexpo.org.
Our Programs SALE OF CHAMPIONS The Sale of Champions is the culmination of a year of dedication and hard work by OYE exhibitors. The event showcases the top market animals, as selected by judges throughout the week. Exhibitors of these animals are rewarded with a premium from the live auction of their animal, most of which is put toward purchasing future projects or savings for higher education goals. The Sale of Champions is truly a gathering of the “best of the best,” and it is truly the end-goal for market animal exhibitors. Upon completion of the event, often times preparations for the next year begin as early as the very day exhibitors return home from OYE. Our staff believes there is no value that can be placed on the responsibility, work ethic, and commitment young people gain from being involved in the Oklahoma Youth Expo and working toward this remarkable goal.
LEGISLATIVE SHOWMANSHIP Legislative Showmanship is one of the most important and enjoyable shows of the year during OYE. Each year, more than 100 Oklahoma legislators and celebrities attend the showmanship contest where they are paired with exhibitors to compete for the coveted Top Showman award. This is an opportunity for these local leaders to meet with the future leaders of the agricultural industry. Here the exhibitors become the teachers, Legislative Showmanship allows for local leaders to get a unique, hands-on experience here at The Greatest Show and see the value programs like OYE and stock shows have on our youth.
AG MECHANICS The Ag Mechanics contest is a rapidly growing contest at the Oklahoma Youth Expo that provides an opportunity for Oklahoma 4-H and FFA members to display projects they construct, to promote the development of skills in agricultural mechanics through competition, and to recognize their accomplishments. A continually growing contest at OYE, divisions for the ag mechanics contest include: Ag Machinery and Equipment, Livestock Equipment, Outdoor Recreation and Convenience, Wildlife Equipment, Trailers, Decorative, and Tractor Restoration. The board of directors and staff at OYE believe in expanding and growing the The Greatest Show to touch all aspects of the agricultural industry. Like the Sale of Champions, the top projects will be sold in an online auction with the proceeds going back to exhibitors. Much of this will be put toward purchasing materials for future projects or savings for higher education goals.
Our Programs
O K L A H O M A A G R I C U LT U R A L LEADERSHIP ENCOUNTER
The Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Encounter is a program designed for Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture juniors and seniors to expand their knowledge of the agricultural industry. Expansion and extension of the educational component of the Oklahoma Junior Livestock Program through production agriculture is a major goal of OYE’s board of directors and staff. Through various opportunities, class members will visit a variety of agriculturally-based companies and organizations across the state. Students will be introduced and exposed to the legislative process and how it affects the agricultural industry. Finally, students will have the opportunity to join the World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show as a valuable staff member during the annual stock show. OSU is a natural fit for the OALE program, as OSU implements and exudes the highest standards possible for education, research, faculty, and students.
SKILLATHON
The Skillathon is an exam process designed to test students’ understanding of the animal industry. The goal of this event is to expand the general livestock knowledge of our state’s youth and to teach them something they may not have known prior to competing in the event. Students who wish to participate will be required to have formal training prior to taking the exam. For example, they must be certified in Youth for the Quality Care of Animals or Pork Quality Assurance to qualify. Students will then be tested on overall animal health practices, animal feeding techniques, animal industry knowledge and much more. The initial exam will determine the top students who will return for a final, hands-on exam. This portion will have live scenarios such as meats judging, administering a shot to an animal, or simply identifying feed types. Scholarships will be awarded to the winners of each age division. The Oklahoma Youth Expo is dedicated to continually moving our industry forward, and the best way to do that is to prepare our youth for the future.
