OUR STORY Founded in 1977, Oklahoma Youth Orchestras (OKYO) provides advanced orchestral education and performance opportunities for talented young musicians. It strengthens already existing school instrumental music programs, and supplements instrumental music programs that do not include orchestra. It provides the opportunity for young musicians from many different schools to work together to challenge their performance skills under the direction of respected conductors and music educators. Today, that focus has grown and helped produce many talented musicians, conductors, performers, instructors, and teachers worldwide. Oklahoma Youth Orchestras is a non-profit organization that receives its financial support from a combination of sources, including participation fees, concert admission, grants, special projects, and donations. Learn more about OKYO, its ensembles, or how you can become involved at okyomusic.org

FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear OKYO Family: I can’t remember a time in my life where young people coming together to make music has been more important. With everything the world has been through, this important team art form brings a beautiful way of healing to our students. Our rehearsals have been filled with mutual respect, intense focus and determination. This has created some memorable musical moments which are going to be plentiful this season. This will be a year filled with special guests, diverse repertoire and a few new ideas we’ve never tried before. We are going to stretch as an organization in a way that will benefit our students. I’m very excited to see it unfold. Thank you all for joining us today and for supporting the goals and dreams of OKYO.

2021 ONE AWARDS
Oklahoma Youth Orchestras is honored to have been selected as one of the three Arts and Humanities winners, sponsored by the Chickasaw Nation, at the 2021 Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence awards! Our friends at the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits work tirelessly to spread good in Oklahoma, and we are truly grateful for their support.
The ONE Awards were established in 2008 by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits with guidance from late Chapman Foundation trustee J. Jerry Dickman and Tulsa businessman Joe Moran to draw attention to those nonprofit organizations that employ the tenets of excellence in their operations every day. Since its beginning, the program has awarded cash grants between $5,000 and $10,000 to exceptional Oklahoma Nonprofits. As of 2020, the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits has given nearly $2 million to more than 200 Oklahoma nonprofits through the ONE Awards.

FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
Welcome to the 2021-22 season of Oklahoma Youth Orchestras! We are thrilled to be back sharing live music with you!! For forty-four seasons, OKYO has been providing quality instrumental music education for outstanding students through excellence in performance, and this season, the tradition continues! After the uncertainty of last year, meeting virtually and rehearsing socially distanced, this season promises to be full of excitement and beautiful music making. From Mr. Grogan’s OYO, to all of the Festival Strings groups and everyone in between, we can tell you that our students, conductors, and staff are ready to learn, create, collaborate, and perform. This season, OKYO includes over 300 students representing 70 schools across the metro and homeschool families from as far away as Stroud and Sulphur. Each week, these young musicians come together to work. Their focus is teamwork, musicianship, creativity and leadership, all under the direction of our outstanding conducting faculty. Exciting opportunities are in store this season, including collaborations with nationally renowned educators and well respected local musicians, as well as a move to presenting most performances at Oklahoma City Community College’s Performing Arts Theatre. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of our families for not only trusting us with their students each week, but also for supporting OKYO during this transitional time. As with many performing arts organizations, OKYO is steadily building back, and its future is brighter than ever! It truly is an exciting time to be part of OKYO and we are deeply grateful for the ongoing support and generosity of our many community partners. A special thank you to all who make our work possible through individual gifts, corporate sponsorships and foundation support. With gratitude,

OYO routinely performs with professional guest soloists, with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, as well as premieres new works. “The students of OYO learn to really give it their all in rehearsal. They bring their best preparation and focus so we can dig deep together and make the magic happen. 2021-22 CONCERTO COMPETITION
ABOUT THE LOUISE FRANCELIA WALDORF PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN SOLO PERFORMANCE This Annual Concerto Competition, now known as the Louise Francelia Waldorf Prize for Excellence in Solo Performance, open to all seniors in the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra (OYO) ensemble. The winner of the Prize will perform as a soloist with the OYO and will receive a scholarship prize. Sponsored by longtime OKYO supporter, Dr. Lin-Lin Liu, the competition’s name was changed to honor her former teacher. "Miss Waldorf was my violin teacher when I was a member of OYO. At the time, Chickasha Public Schools did not have a strings program and she worked very hard to make sure I could play in an orchestra. I have fond memories of her accompanying me on her harpsichord. She was a remarkable lady," says Dr. Liu.

Oklahoma Youth Philharmonic (OYP) Oklahoma Youth Philharmonic (OYP), is a full orchestra ensemble consisting of mostly high school students in string, wind, brass, and percussion sections. Repertoire includes many standard masterworks, expertly arranged educational compositions, as well as many original compositions, contemporary works, and popular music straight from the movies. In 2018 OYP performed as an Honor Ensemble at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association annual in-service. OYP has also participated in an exchange program with the Youth Symphonies of Kansas City. Every other spring, students in OYP get to work with a living composer over the course of several rehearsals and perform a world premiere, as a part of our Composer-in-Residence partnership program with Oklahoma City University and Dr. Edward Knight.
“OYP members have learned to become independent musicians, making our rehearsal time much more productive. Their ability to listen and adjust their playing to match their colleagues has helped OYP improve each week.”
Dr. Charlene Dell Conductor, Oklahoma Youth Philharmonic

Oklahoma Youth Winds (OYW) Founded in 2004, Oklahoma Youth Winds (OYW) is made up of talented high school wind and percussion students. This challenging honor wind ensemble provides experience in musical preparation and performance that students can take to their own high school band programs and exposes students to literature that they may not play in their school programs. OYW has been invited to perform as an Honor Ensemble at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association annual in-service three times since 2013. “How do we spell OYW? O is for “OPPORTUNITY” where students have a great setting to interact musically with other students from all over the OKC Metro and to learn about music from experts in the field.
Dr. Matthew Mailman Conductor, Oklahoma Youth Winds
Y is for “WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?” Our setting is familiar but different than what most students experience in their school music programs. We cover different repertoire and provide musical training from some of the finest music teachers in the state. W is for “WOULD YOU FIT IN?” The answer is YES! Not only are all of our students friendly, but also everyone joins at their own musical skill levels and everyone is able to grow and have fun. Our diversity of personnel is one of the things that sets us apart!”

On occasion, pieces will utilize multiple key changes and shifting throughout sections. Musicians are asked to spend time working on music outside of rehearsal and to come prepared to learn new techniques and music each week.
“Students in Sinfonia learn proper rehearsal etiquette and how to make music as an ensemble. Students’ skills are challenged with increasingly difficult repertoire and attention to phrasing, bowings, dynamics and articulations.” Courtney Monk Conductor, Sinfonia & Conductor, Studio Rockestra
