Industry News DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IS TRANSFORMING THE COSMETICS INDUSTRY
Publisher
The cosmetics industry is embracing new technologies, as it attempts to attract a new wave of digital natives.
Beauty Media Group (PTY) Ltd Postnet Suite 615 Private Bag X10 Elarduspark 0047 South Africa
The rise of online shopping has transformed the way we buy everything from groceries to clothes but, when it comes to cosmetics, online shopping has hit the buffers. This is because consumers still want the same ‘real-life’ experience online as they do in-store – they want to know what a product will look like on their skin, in order to make a decision.
Editor in Chief/Creative Director Oksana van Tonder makeuppro@nailcouture.co.za
With 87% of people expected to be shopping online and 45% on mobile phones by 2020, cosmetics companies need to use the most advanced technology available to introduce products to digital consumers. Recent research from the Future Foundation found that “in-store experience needs to work ever harder to excite and ‘close the deal’ while the customer is on site”.

Now two L’Oréal brands have launched partnerships with technology companies to allow customers to use the latest technology to ‘trial’ cosmetics before they buy. YSL has partnered with Google to enable make-up artists to teach the make-up application to customers digital technology, while L’Oréal Paris has launched a ‘Makeup Genius’ application to allow customers to see how make-up will look on their face before buying it. Both of these initiatives are designed to enhance the process of purchasing cosmetics, allowing customers to experience products in a way that previously wasn’t possible. Rather than replacing the “make-up trial” experience in a retail store, these initiatives aim to add a new dimension for people who want to try a new look. L’Oréal Paris Developed by L’Oréal in the US, Makeup Genius is a beauty app that uses facial mapping technology to transform your iPhone or iPad’s front-facing camera into a virtual mirror where you can ‘try on’ L’Oreal Paris products – including eyeliner and lipstick – in real time. L’Oréal worked with a team of data scientists from Image Metrics – whose advanced facial mapping technology was used in the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – to incorporate a facial mapping algorithm into the app. Up until this point, the technology had only been used in Hollywood and in the gaming industry. The app is currently only available on iOS in the US and France, but L’Oréal hopes to roll it out internationally over the coming months.

YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) Another L’Oréal brand, YSL Beaute, has recently launched a partnership with Google Glass to allow makeup artists to capture makeup sessions on video from a subjective point of view and demonstrate different make-up application techniques. YSL make-up artists in department stores will use Google Glass to film makeover sessions with customers. At the end of the session, they can email the video to the customer’s personal account, along with ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots. The customer can then replay the video at home and mimic the makeup artist’s techniques to recreate the makeover look. They can also view a list of the products that the makeup artist used, and order them online via YSL’s web store. By: Sophie Curtis Sophie is a technology reporter at the Daily Telegraph. P roducts News Z PALETTE – A NEW, CREATIVE WAY TO ORGANIZE YOUR MAKE-UP PRODUCTS Based in sunny Southern California, USA, Z Palette is a ‘think-outsidethe-makeup-packaging’ company. Dedicated to providing the absolute best in customer service, Z Palette empowers beauty lovers to transform bulky makeup bags and messy bathroom counter tops into customized, organized and simplified works of art. Created by Zena Shteysel, two-time Emmy Award winning celebrity make-up artist, Z Palette is a freestyle magnetic palette designed to store and organize your favourite make-up products, from eye shadow cakes to blushes, lipsticks and make-up brushes. After years of lugging around a heavy and cumbersome makeup kit from set to set, it dawned on Zena that there had to be a better way to streamline her kit, lighten her load, and get organized. And so, the Z Palette was created. Every feature of the Z Palette was carefully thought about by Zena who insists on using only the highest quality materials and most innovative designs. Determined to arm her customers with everything they need to customize, organize and simplify their makeup, Zena continues to expand the Z Palette line to evolve with the beauty industry, and most importantly, her customers’ needs. Z Palettes come in a variety of sizes, colours and fashionable designs. Each Z Palette has a clear cover and is made from recyclable materials. The design concept of the palette allows the make-up artist to organise their products by colour, type or a brand – whichever way is easier to use them. Make-up products from different brands, shapes and sizes can be easily fixed to the magnetic bottom of the pallet, removed and reorganised over and over again to create custom kits for a specific occasion or a client. Simply remove make-up pans from their original bulky packaging, and arrange in a Z Palette for a neat and compact storage and easy access. Your make-up pans will remain in the spot you’ve put it during storage and travel. Since some pans are non-metallic (eg: MAC), they will need metal stickers to adhere to the Z Palette. Metal stickers are included with every palette. The Dome palette has a deeper design and fits all mineralised and baked dome-shaped shadows and blushes etc. Z Palette can be used not by professional make-up artists only but their clients as well, which makes it for a great retail item! South African make-up artist will be pleased to learn that Z Palette can be purchased online from the distributor in South Africa – Turquoise Studio at www.turquoisestudio.co.za.

Ask the Expert Reader’s questions answered by Carla Ortlepp, The Lash Collection
Q: What is the difference between mink and silk eyelash extensions? It is very confusing with all the choices available from suppliers. Lee-Ann van der Westhuizen, Pretoria
A:
Real mink lashes are made from the tail hair of the Syberian or Chinese Mink, small animal prised for its fur. These lashes are extremely soft but do not hold their shape as well as synthetic lashes and are not as durable. Real mink lashes are very fine and therefore some wearers will find they still need to wear mascara on top to achieve the same effect as synthetic lashes. Silk lashes are made from a synthetic silk, are very soft to touch and bond well to the natural lash. They hold their curl a lot better than real mink lashes, and add great volume and length whilst still looking very natural.
Q: Is it true that I have to keep the Lash Adhesive in the fridge and if so, please explain why? Blessing Kunene, Polokwane
A:
Lash adhesives are best stored at room temperature in order to maintain their consistency. When stored in the fridge and then at room temperature whilst in use, the product will experience continuous changes in temperature which after prolonged use causes a change in consistency. What you will find is that the adhesive will become thick and tacky and difficult to work with towards the end of the bottle. If stored at a consistent temperature and out of direct sunlight at all times the product will maintain its consistency and you will be able to use every last drop.
Q: What aftercare products can I suggest to eyelash extension clients? Karin Pretorius, Durban
A:
Maintaining proper aftercare is crucial for longevity of the eyelash extensions. Most importantly, clients need an appropriate product to cleanse their eyelash extensions on a daily basis. Sure, water based make-up remover will do the trick, but there are specialized products like Chrissanthie Eyelid Cleanser, which was formulated specifically to suit the needs of eyelash wearers. It cleanses and removes make-up in one application. It is also advised to recommend a good coating sealant to your client to help maintain the bond of the extensions and to hold their shape.

& Eyelash Enhancements ALLERGIES The Allergic Reaction is a very complex condition that manifests itself at any time and in many different ways. Some of the allergic reactions, especially in the eye area, can be related to lash extension services. Clients can experience redness and swelling of the eyelid close to the lash line, and some clients experience diffused redness and swelling all around the general eye area. Most of the time
the redness and swelling is accompanied by itching. Since the skin around the eye is much more delicate than the skin on the rest of the body, the reaction in this area can be much more severe than one would expect. The allergy can appear at any time. Symptoms can develop after years of using lash extensions, or they can appear the very first time the lash products are used.

Eyelashes & Brows There are several different causes of these reactions and it is important to be able to distinguish a true allergic reaction from simple irritation. Irritation also has several different causes, and differs from a true allergy, in that it does not cause the body to produce histamine. Sometimes the only way to distinguish between an allergy and irritation is to see if the symptoms respond to anti-histamine medication. Since therapists can’t give medical advice to their clients, it is recommended to refer them to a medical practitioner if a true allergic reaction is suspected. As an eyelash extension specialist you should familiarize yourself with causes and symptoms of allergies and irritation and know what to do if a problem arises.
1
Medical Tape
A large portion of the population (up to 15%) has severe allergies to medical tape and Band-Aid, often without being aware of it. The adhesive on the under gel pads is similar to the adhesive in a medical tape, so if your client is allergic to the tape, there is a high probability she will react to gel pads as well.
2
Cyanoacrylate
3
Seasonal Allergies
4
Eyelid Irritation
Allergies to cyanoacrylate-based adhesives are difficult to distinguish from irritation from eyelash extensions in general. Cyanoacrylate allergies can develop at any time. They can start after years of use, after one use or after a few uses. Generally they manifest as a red, swollen, itchy lash line. If you examine the skin in between the eyelashes, it is often possible to see microscopic dots of adhesive on the eyelid skin. If these dots are present under magnification, there is a good chance they are having a reaction to the glue. Patch tests can be done by placing a small drop of glue on the inner fold of the elbow or behind the ear.
Some people who suffer from seasonal allergies find that they have to remove their lash extensions for about two months out of the year when the pollen count is at its highest. Again, the symptoms are the same; swelling, itching and redness. This generally happens in the springtime, but some people have allergies to pollen that blooms during the fall or summer.
Eyelash Extensions themselves can cause irritation of the eyelid because in the case of incorrect application they touch the delicate skin of the eyelid and rub against the skin. The thicker the extension, the more likely irritation can occur in sensitive individuals. To rule out mechanical (i.e. non-chemical) irritation, try switching to the thinnest extensions (0.15mm). If the symptoms are reduced or eliminated, you can conclude that the adhesive is not the cause. To rule out an irritation, make sure the extensions are placed perfectly on the lash and are not applied too close or too far from this eyelash line.
5
Eye Irritation
6
Clients who suffer from Rosacea
Many people with sensitivities to the adhesive begin getting irritated during the procedure itself. When the gel pad is placed too tight on the lower lid, it holds the lid open by about 1mm or less. This allows fumes from the adhesive to escape into the eye while the procedure is being done. Some people feel stinging, burning and irritation. Others feel nothing at the time, but wake up the next morning with red, swollen, itchy eyes. If the client leaves the salon with redness in the whites of the eyes, it can be concluded that the eye itself has been exposed to the fumes of an adhesive. To prevent exposure to fumes, take a moment to visually inspect the gel pad from under the eye. It is necessary to stand up and walk around the table to view the upper and lower lids and check for a tight seal between the two. Exposure to fumes can also take place when the client opens her eyes too soon after the procedure. Care should also be taken not to lift the lid by applying too much pressure to the lashes during the separation process. Lifting the lid can cause fumes to escape into the eye.
Clients with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea are much more likely to suffer reactions to eyelash extension products. There is even a sub-type of rosacea that specifically affects the eyelids. Again, the symptoms are redness, swelling and itching. Many people may not even be aware that they suffer from Rosacea at all until they have a problem with their eyelash extensions. It is possible to have eyelid rosacea triggered by irritation from eyelash extensions even if the client does not suffer from rosacea on other parts of the face. While as an eyelash therapist you can do very little about some type of allergies related to eyelash extensions, there has been some recent progress in reducing exposure to the chemical elements during eyelash services.
The Lash Collection has recently introduced a revolutionary product called Anti Allergy Gel that was designed to neutralize the air in the work area, benefiting both clients and the therapist who may have sensitive skin or who are prone to eye allergies. Anti-Allergy Gel absorbs harmful fumes and reduces the level of strong odours which are created by chemical substances often used in the Lash and Nail industries. It is known to reduce flulike symptoms caused by working around cyanoacrylates (instant adhesives) and also helps with asthma and other respiratory problems caused by airborne chemicals and vapours. Simply place an open container of Anti-Allergy Gel near your workstation during the procedure to reduce the level of fumes in your work area. Customers and therapists will notice reduced irritation and allergies. For info and orders contact The Lash Collection at info@thelashcollection.co.za or +27 21 555 1517

5 EASY
RESOLUTIONS To improve your image & your Make-Up Career by Valencia McLeod
It’s officially the New Year, and you have without doubt made plenty of promises to yourself about what 2015 should hold for you. How many of them you will actually realize?
Sure, losing 10 kg in the next three month looks like an achievable goal if you are planning to put a huge lock on your fridge and throw the key into the ocean, buy a permanent residency in the local gym and use a bicycle to move around. But, instead of making a bunch of high and lofty goals, why not start small and vow to do some things that don’t require
huge sacrifices and will make a positive difference in your professional life? I am talking about your personal appearance and resolutions on how to improve it. As a Make-Up Artist you are an inspiration to your clients and your personal image is your brand, And the best way to sell the brand is to make it desirable and different from others.
Valencia McLeod is a graduate from Kohl Make-Up Academy, Johannesburg, where she got all the necessary skills that make her the Professional Make-Up Artist that she is today. Her recent works include fashion shows, corporate and charity events such as Reach for a Dream, Women of Substance and Miss Earth SA. 10

#1 BE DARING AND TRY ON A NEW LOOK Try a new beauty trend you’ve never dared to before. Whether it’s a shimmery eye shadow, sultry look or just a bold lip get out of your comfort zone and experiment with something that actually scares you. Who knows? You might just find a new better look for your “brand”.
#2 WEAR SPF Instead of promising yourself that you’ll stick to a 10-step skincare regimen every night or invest in exclusive and super expensive skin products, why not start small and just make SPF a part of your daily routine? It’s the first line of defense against aging, and is the ultimate protection against the wrinkle-accelerator also known as the sun. Your skin should be a glowing and radiant subject of envy for anyone around you, including your clients. So start with the basics and take preventative measures to protect your “brand”.
#3 BE KINDER TO YOUR HAIR Time for a wake-up call ladies, your hair is stressed. And why wouldn’t it be, with all the styling and heating and curling and straightening you put it through? Give it a break this year and embrace the art of air-drying at least once a week.
#4 GET A MANICURE Your hands are the center of attention when you work with clients. Make sure you don’t have to hide them! Chipped nail polish and dry cracked cuticles is not a good look on a professional Make-Up Artist. So pick up a phone and book an appointment with a nail tech. Keep your nails short and neat – whether you opt for a natural look or decide to commit to a bi-weekly gel polish overlay – any choice you make is a good one for your professional image and self-esteem. Remember to keep the lightly scented nourishing hand cream in your handbag and use it before starting a make-up application for a client.
#5 DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT MAKE-UP Do not leave your home without make-up... ever! In the case of a Make-Up Artist, a bare face is like a blank business card – this does not represent you in any way. Your potential client can be standing next to you in a supermarket queue or at the petrol station. You should be ready to strike a conversation and grab that business opportunity at any time. Showcase your level of skills and make-up techniques on your own face – the best advertisement for your business is your beautiful self.

From Reader to Reader
Making it in Make-Up by Katelyn Hughes I have not always been the make-up addict that I am today. In fact, I was petrified of the stuff growing up. My mom was a hippie, a very naturally beautiful hippie at that, so there wasn’t much make-up lying around the house.
wish list is stuffed with make-up books penned by industry legends. Maybe being a better artist has become an obsession, but it’s my life. A hard one at that…
However, there was a pie, cake and chocolate. So by the time I was a teenager, when one would normally start loving the true power of make-up and really experimenting with it I was enchanted by the magic of Bridget-Jones-style-suck-inknickers and the thrill of secretly eating behind the slender, beautiful mother’s back.
My inner dialogue is fuelling my drive, repeating over and over and over that I have to make it work. Might I ever be as good as I expect myself to be? I will keep pushing myself. Can I get better with each application? Hell, yes I can! I do, each and every time! Will I ever really make it in the makeup industry? Well, how would I know if I have? I’ll just have to keep on doing what I love, what I believe in.
Which is why it is a bit of a shock for a lot of people, who knew me as a chubby little girl who loves cake, to see me flourish into a make-up artist who forgets to eat on any given shoot day.
No, I’m not the best artist in the country, or my city. I didn’t get into makeup to be “the best”. I wanted to explore a side of life so many others miss out on.
Make-up - at first is scared me but today I can say it saved my waistline and my sense of humor. Not to mention feeding me a bit of humble pie in the process.
I apply make-up to draw out the unseen beauty from a face. No matter who your canvas is, no matter the brief; there is beauty there. As make-up artists, it’s our job to reach in and bring it out, twist it into something that will have people want to stare at it for hours on end and believe in pure beauty.
I was not that naturally talented girl in the make-up class. You know the one who was always having her images put onto the school’s Facebook and working next to her in your practical exams made you sweat. Oh no! I was the loud one, the one who cracked all the jokes. I won most passionate, not most brilliant, at graduation. This is the reason why I brought up the aforementioned humble pie. I have had to work hard to better myself. On the odd evening at home (when Eskom blesses me with electricity), I am practicing looks on myself or on the ever-patient girlfriend. I scour the internet for tutorials from the greats, my Kalahari
I might not have started off as a typical make-up artist would; sitting around with my mother’s lipstick all over my mouth and flapping Tinkerbell handbags around. No, I started off as the loud, funny chick who always showed her pants when she bent over. Today I am the Key Makeup Artist on a call sheet, the woman who is trusted by the bride on her most special day and the one you call when you want to “do something weird with paint”. I’m a make-up addict and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Katelyn Hughes is a Professional Make-Up Artist, a blogger and a self-proclaimed make-up addict with a ridiculous sense of humor and an over zealous fondness for cake. Not one to take herself too seriously Katelyn is happy to open up about her experiences in an industry that changes as often as lipstick trends. 12

SCULPTING THE FACE
1.
The first step to this look is bringing dimension to the face by using principles of highlight and shadowing. Cream or powder products in flesh tones work best. The more shades of products you use, the more dimension you will achieve. Look for the light spots and shadows of your face by using a mirror.

EYEBROWS
2.
The second step is designing the eyebrows. For a precise and realistic shape of the brows, draw hair by hair on the face chart. Using a fine brush, first sketch the position of the actual brow with a lighter color. Next, apply the shade a little darker over the entire shape. Finally, accent the outer corner of the brow with an eyeliner. Products Eye Color: Pavement Cake Eyeliner: Black Tools Brushes #210, #100

3.
This face chart was designed for the MUD image specifically for the eye products so the focus will be an eccentric eye make-up application. Apply a light Eye Color to the inner corner of the eye. Then add a darker color in the outer corner, extending it all over the upper lid and towards the eyebrow. For more intensity, first apply the creamier version of the color, over the upper lid. Then blend it in using the powder form for a precise transition. Next, take a fine brush to line the eyes. Apply to both the top and bottom lids. Use the same brush with less product to create lashes with lots of volume. Give life to the iris by coloring it with color pencils. LIPS
4.
The final step is creating the lips. Use a cream product, blending it softly on the paper and adding dimension by building up layers of product. For a more realistic look, add lip wrinkles using your own lips for direction on how to draw them.
