WELCOME

I am delighted to welcome you to The King’s School, Canterbury. The King’s Sixth Form is a wonderfully vibrant and fulfilling place to be. The range of academic and co-curricular experiences that await all pupils in their final two years of school life is extraordinary. This booklet provides initial information and answers to important questions about life in the Sixth Form and the admissions process. VISITING THE SCHOOL

Individual visits include a tour of the school with a current pupil and a meeting with the Director of Admissions. Open Days are also held on a Saturday morning in September, followed by another in May. Dates and other details are published on the website in advance. REGISTRATION It is necessary to register a prospective pupil for entry at an early stage in the admissions process in order to confirm your interest in a place. Once a pupil is registered, parents will receive regular updates keeping them informed about the school. Registration is kept confidential until such time as a reference is required. The registration fee is currently £200. You can register here - Register Candidates must register before being sent the link to the online application form for the examinations. All candidates are expected to submit their most recent set of school reports when they register. Deadline for registration for 2025 entry is 4th October 2024. Age at Year 12 entry Candidates should be under 17 years of age on 1st September of year of entry. Please use the table below to check the correct year based on the candidate’s date of birth. EXAMINATIONS & OFFER OF A PLACE Entry is by competitive examination, reference and interview either at King’s or online. Overseas candidates may sit the examination at the nearest British Council Office, an accredited Examination Centre or at their current school. UK residents must sit the examination at The King’s School, Canterbury. Successful candidates should expect to achieve at least seven (I)GCSEs at Grade B or Grade 6. The closing date for registration is in October of the year prior to entry; examinations and interviews are held in November. The examinations will consist of the following online objective tests (2 hours) • • • •

Spatial Quantitative Reasoning Verbal Non-Verbal

plus a short General Paper (1 hour) typically consisting of some comprehension, free writing, and logic problems. Please click here for a sample past paper. Following registration, a link to the online examination application form will be sent in the Autumn Term the year prior to entry. A personal statement, a recent photograph, birth certificate and a copy of the applicant’s passport are required as part of the online application. Candidates are asked to inform their current Head Teachers of their application. Reference Requests These requests are made by the Director of Admissions to the candidate’s current school. Confirmation of a Place A place is confirmed through the payment of a deposit following the offer of a place.



ALLOCATION OF HOUSE

Houses will be allocated to pupils, in order to balance the intake into each House in terms of pupils’ talents and backgrounds, as well as availability of places in the Houses. You will be informed of the House allocation at the latest by the summer term preceding the term of entry to King’s. However, we understand that some families have a close connection to King’s, so we will invite all applicants who have accepted a place, to complete a House Preference form, where they can inform us of their 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice of House allocation. Of course, we cannot guarantee that this will be the House they are allocated to, but we will endeavour to accommodate where possible. SCHOLARSHIPS & EXHIBITIONS

Sixth Form candidates can apply for Music, Art and Sports scholarships when completing the online examination application form. Academic Scholarships can be awarded for outstanding performance in the Sixth Form entrance examination held in November. Does King’s offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program? No. King’s offers A-Level courses. Which A-Level subjects does King’s offer? A wide range of A-Level subjects are offered at King’s. The Sixth Form curriculum can be viewed here: Sixth Form curriculum How many places are available for Yr 12 entry in 2025? The number varies year to year but there are usually around 50 places available. What is the deadline for Registering for Yr 12, 2025 entry? The registration deadline is 4th October 2024. You can register here - Register What is the deadline for submitting the examination form for Yr 12, 2025 entry? Following registration you will be sent a link to the examination entry form. This needs to be completed by 11th October 2024. Do I need to email any supporting documentation to The Admissions Team before registering? Yes. Please supply a copy of your latest school report. No additional information is required prior to registration.


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Can I prepare for the Entrance Exams? No preparation or specific study are required. Where can I sit the Entrance Exams? UK-based candidates are expected to sit the entrance examinations at The King’s School, Canterbury. Overseas candidates are expected to sit the entrance examinations at a British Council Office, an accredited Examination Centre or at their current school. When will the Entrance Exams take place for Admission to Yr 12 in 2025? Yr 12 Entrance Exams will take place on 8th or 9th November 2024. Will I receive instructions regarding sitting the Entrance Exams? Yes. An online King’s Entrance Exam Form will be emailed out shortly after the registration deadline date. Is an interview required as part of the Admission process? UK candidates will be interviewed on the day of their examinations. Successful overseas candidates will be invited for interview via Skype/Teams.


Does The King’s School arrange my appointment at the British Council? No. You will need to approach your local British Council Offices and arrange the appointment. The Exams Officers at The British Council will advise you on the process. There will be a fee to pay. How long do the Entrance Exams take? We ask that you book in for 3 hours. This allows for a maximum of 30 minutes per online test and 1 hour for the English written paper. However, it may not take you the full 3 hours to complete all sections. Candidates who complete the papers in less time will not be penalised. When will I know how I performed in my King’s Entrance Exams? Offers will be made at the beginning of December 2024. What deposit will I need to pay to confirm my acceptance of a place at King’s? All parents will be asked to pay £2,000 acceptance deposit to ensure their child’s place at King’s. The deposit is only refundable on academic grounds. All non-UK-based parents will be asked to pay an additional deposit of two term’s fees.
