A Junior King’s Blessing The School Song
Welcome from the Headmaster My seventeenth and final year at Junior King’s has sped past and once again Speech Day provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the progress and achievements taking place at the school. It has been a remarkable year in many respects. The dominant feature of the autumn and early spring term was our expectation that the School would soon receive a major inspection from the ISI (The Independent Schools Inspectorate). This duly took place in March, the inspectors confirming that the School is fully compliant with all statutory regulations. Most pleasingly the second part of the inspection, looking at the quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements, together with the quality of pupils’ personal development, judged Junior King’s excellent in all aspects. The influx of new children to the school each year is always exciting as we discover their potential and a new social dynamic emerges. This year saw 62 newcomers settle in the Prep School and 27 in the Pre-Prep. The boarding houses have once again been full and flourishing with much interest from a strong global market. I am grateful to all the staff for their fine work in making induction such a smooth process and to the Friends of Junior King’s for building such supportive family links through their social functions, advice and networking. The magnificent Indian Summer Ball was just one example of the cohesion provided by their enthusiastic support for the school. Scholarship and Common Entrance examinations are always an indicator of the academic health of the school, this year’s leavers achieving a most pleasing set of results. All were successful in gaining places at their chosen senior schools, the vast majority going to King’s. Our sports teams continue to demonstrate a commitment to excellence, the senior boys turning in particularly strong results in Football and Rugby where they were regional Football and national Rugby champions. The senior girls’ teams enjoyed a very successful tour of Holland where the 1 st team were unbeaten, demonstrating once again the enormous development that takes place.
Rowing fencing, and tennis teams have also done well and our athletes distinguished themselves on Sports Day. Several went on to compete in the National IAPS Finals in Birmingham. The anticipated covering of the swimming pool together with sports hall improvements will add further to the strength of the Sports Department next year. The profile of the Arts continues to rise. Outstanding musical talent has been nurtured in the Herbert Music School, with some excellent dramatic productions including Joseph and Canterbury Tales, the latter being performed at King’s Week. Strong LAMDA and Kent drama competition results and a fine summer exhibition of Art, Design and Technology combined with more children than ever enjoying visits to galleries. A healthy crop of scholarship awards were gained to King’s and other schools in Drama, DT, Art and Music. The Choir enjoyed a splendid tour to Northern France in the summer holiday and returned to sing beautifully again at various services in church and the Cathedral. We want to wish all our leavers every success as they move up to their new schools with confidence. This has been one of the best years I can remember at Junior King’s as this record will confirm. My thanks must finally go to all the staff involved with me in developing the School as it is today. The creative partnerships we have enjoyed with the students are full of wonder and great expectation!

A Junior King’s Blessing May you be fortunate with all that life brings, may you be lucky in little things. May you be secure in possession of the few real things life has to offer Words: Rudyard Kipling Music: Adrian Bawtree
The School Song – “Here at Junior King’s” (WHISPERED) The sound of distant footsteps … echo from the past …Every step, a beating clock … becomes louder than the last …Whether faint, loud … or yet to come - each step plays its part - Every stride, fall, … leap … is echoed in our heart. Hands down, Heads up, Start running and you’ll leave the ground, Aim high, Start now, Sit back and let me tell you how: This school isn’t built out of simple stone, This school wasn’t built by anyone alone, It’s time you rubbed your eyes to see – This school is so much more than you or me. We’re joining in the chorus, The voice that always sings, Acer non effrenus, Here at Junior King’s. Standing on the shoulders, Of those who’ve gone before, Through friendship and wisdom, We all can do much more. If you’re given, when you’re growing, generosity and care, then you’re giving, and you’re sowing, the same everywhere, since our Lady Milner gave her house to share, her kindness and love is still there, Joining in the chorus . . . . If you’re looking for the answer, and you don’t know what to do, be patient, take a chance, be sure to see it through, Lord Milner believed in what we all can do, his trust lives within me and you. Joining in the chorus . . . . . So be humble and be willing, everyday of your life, if you stumble, be forgiving, wherever the strife, set the example for King’s to live on, let your voice be part of the song! – Joining in the chorus . . . . Joining in the chorus . . . . at Jun’r King’s! Composed by Tim Finnis
