Hawaii, Nordfjord

Hoddevik in Nordfjord is situated at the very edge of the world but nonetheless is a magnet for several thousand travellers every year. Most of them come here to experience the village's magical boundary with the mighty sea.

Grommet, cross step, hanging five, swells, tube surf. Foreign words to most ears, but for the people of Hoddevik, surf speak is no longer incomprehensible. At one of Norway's greatest and most beautiful surfing destinations, they have eventually grown used to alternative definitions of the term 'coastal culture'.

Hoddevik is situated on the edge of Nordfjord, close to the renowned Stadtlandet. The village is spread over a narrow valley, enclosed on three sides by steep mountains, and by the sea on the fourth side. Within the valley, the houses sit along the road like colourful pearls on a necklace, all the way to the point where the valley's meadows transform into Ă&#x2DC;rsta a strikingly beautiful beach. This Volda is far as you'll get in Hoddevik without getting your feet wet. Here, the green valley sides change into bare, inaccessible cliffs. Nordfjordeid

There are no more than 20 permanent residents in Hoddevik. The closest community is Leikanger, 12 km inland along a winding county road. If you arrive from the west, some of the first signs of material civilisation may be found there: Shops, café, petrol station, sports ground. Hoddevik offers few such expressions of modernity, particularly after the one remaining shop closed down last year. However, this doesn't really matter to the people who visit Hoddevik. Materialism is a state that most people leave behind once they pass the signpost for Hoddevik on the crest of the last hill. Down here, it's the nature and tranquillity that counts. Until just a few years ago, Hoddevik was a village like many other villages in rural Norway. A place that young people moved away from, a place with no job opportunities or future prospects. Then somebody discovered that the waves being forced into Hoddevik by the sea were quite exceptional for surfboards. People with a passion for surfing came here, and stayed. They bought houses, renovated them and opened up their doors to overnight guests. The houses of Hoddevik

became Akka Surf, Stad Surfing and Lapoint Surfcamp. Surfboards and suits were purchased, surfing courses and surf camps became established. Rumours started quickly spreading about an extraordinarily beautiful, uncrowded village, on the edge of the North Sea, which offered excellent surfing conditions. Hoddevik has attracted people from every part of the world. Nobody in Hoddevik expresses surprise any more that surfers from Australia, Brazil, the USA or France find their way here. The Hoddevik bay is particularly attractive from October and through the winter. This cold time of year is the best season for surfing as endless low pressure systems in the Atlantic Ocean generate a procession of powerful waves towards the coast. In Hoddevik, the waves roll over a perfect seabed. Thus, nature has created some of the best conditions surfers can find at these latitudes. The combination of surfing adventures and a well-stocked farming village, as well as superb places of accommodation, has created a destination that is talked about far beyond the borders of Western Norway.

Left wing radical in the village - This was a place I couldn't leave, says Anne-Kari Lerfald in her melodic Eastern Norwegian dialect. Her roots are in an entirely different kind of landscape but she speaks of Hoddevik with great affection. - It is extremely important that we don't destroy the soul of this place. I try to impress this upon everyone who comes here. Hoddevik is unique and we must look after it. Through the kitchen window, Anne-Kari can see parts of her little kingdom in Hoddevik, which she bought four years ago. She is now one of the village's landowners, with salmon rights, a deer permit and a boathouse that belongs to the property. She has christened the main house 'Akka Surf'. This is where Anne-Kari receives overnight guests â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in a veritable adventure of a house

in which the personally decorated rooms are a mixture of museum, second-hand bookshop and design exhibition. The cellar is full of surfing equipment that is available to guests. Anne-Kari Lerfald has an extensive CV. She has been a left wing radical, radio journalist and farmer. She has travelled all over the world to skate and snowboard. Now she has found some peace and quiet in Hoddevik and just loves accommodating overnight guests. - I don't know how long I'm going to stay here. But right now, this is where I belong.

No pain, no gain. The view from the summit of Sk책la is worth the struggle up Norway's longest hill.

Petra 3-layer jacket in aqua mint

Skåla is a mountain icon of Western Norway and appeals to anyone who appreciates the Norwegian heights. Summit enthusiasts will travel far to experience a decent hill and in Loen they will find the longest of them all. The ascent starts at 28 metres above sea level and ends at the characteristic Skåla Tower, at a height of 1,848 metres above sea level, just over 8 kilometres later. You don't need to be in peak condition to get up there, but it helps. This mountain is also the venue for the king of the many uphill races in Norway. The 'Skåla Opp' uphill race is organised in August every year, a tradition that dates back to 2002. In the anniversary year of 2011, there were a record number of participants, with around 2,500 people reaching the summit. The quickest of them all was Ahmet Arslan, a Turk, who completed the race with provocative ease in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 38 seconds. If you use a little more time – and this must surely apply to most of us – you may enjoy a spectacular ascent. The first couple of kilometres is along forest tracks and paths, followed by a wide, partly paved path to Lake Skålavatnet, at around 1,200 metres above sea level, before the final part of the trip along stone stairs and crags to the summit.

Around 10,00 people climb the Skåla path to the summit each year. However, the path shows few signs of wear and tear, thanks to the many years of voluntary work dedicated to keeping it in good condition. Skogstad would like to wish you a pleasant trip!

The Bødalsbreen glacier has shrunk several hundred metres in the last twenty years but its white 'cape' still has pulling power. The glacier has become a livelihood to Ruben who, together with his father, Frode Briksdal, run the company, Briksdal Adventure. During a hectic summer season, the two of them escort around 1,500 people from Bødalssetra up onto the glacier arm. There are many types of people who want to visit the glacier. Everyone from experienced mountaineers to those who have never been on a mountain before. City folk who don't know how to walk on uneven terrain or who have never climbed a hill. Women in burkas. Italian fashion photographers searching for locations. Slippery blue ice certainly presents a few challenges. But you learn to be patient. -And I am still not tired of people, says Frode, who reckons he has as many glacier clients from Norway as he has from abroad. The Briksdals – like most glacier guides – have a natural authority. Without their instruction and a proper route, the blue ice is a potential hazard. An ice giant that is regularly on the move should be treated with respect. Father and son know where the ice is safe.

- I have been traversing the glacier since I was five years of age and know how beautiful and how dangerous it can be, says Ruben. In spite of his young age, he has has gained a lot of experience as a glacier guide. - The tourists were a little sceptical the first time I worked as a guide. They looked slightly askance and wondered what had happened to the real guide. I was fourteen years old at the time. Now he is a veteran of the glacier. With his father, he runs the company, Briksdal Adventure, which provides guided tours through the Nordfjord nature for Norwegian and international tourists from May to October. The company offers glacier trips, mountain climbing and RIB rafting. During the course of a summer season, the company turns over NOK 2-3 million. However, up on the glacier, money seems to be of little significance to the guides. The surroundings have a value that cannot be measured in terms of money. Â- Life actually doesn't get better than this, says Ruben, as he enjoys his lunch on an ice ridge with the whole of BĂ¸dalen spread out beneath him.
