ello summer and a brand spanking New Year! 2018 was a phenomenal year for the OLALA INTERIORS team. Local and international acclaim provided plenty of accolades with a host of awards bestowed including ROMO International Top Designer of the Year for KwaZulu Natal, Home Fabrics Top Design & Specifier of the Year for KwaZulu Natal, Regional Finalist for the Business Women’s Association of South Africa and shortlisted for the International Design & Architecture Awards for 2019. And finally, 5 Star Award Winner: Best Interior Design Private Residence South Africa and Nominee: Best Interior Design Private Residence Africa in the International Property Awards - We expand on this impressive win in our feature on page 8.
Summer is the time of year that we all truly celebrate outdoor living and bringing that outdoors into the home. All three of the beautiful homes featured in this issue work seamlessly with their outdoor environments. The first of which, Clifton Splendor, is a multi award winning project and rightly so. With its magnificently proportioned spaces and the dramatic use of black with saturated blues, velvet and layered glamour, the home creates a veritable feast for the eyes. The Midrand equestrian estate home, filled with iconic pieces, delights with its majestic architecture and boundless luxurious interior design. The OLALA INTERIORS team outdid themselves with pure artistry in this exceptional home. And last but certainly not least, the home that epitomises
summer, Endless Horizons. Designed by Metropole Architects and located on the KwaZulu Natal North Coast, this boldly contemporary home honours the spectacular ocean views, and draws the tropical blue and grey colour palette in from the surrounding environment. Good lighting has the power to make or break a space (or at least badly illuminate it!). Transforming it into something amazing that is not only pleasing aesthetically but emotionally too. Choosing good lighting can be horribly daunting or it can be a fantastic experience. With the myriad choices available out there, Michael Anderson from our Cape Town office shines a light on some of his favourite, on trend lighting fixtures. Make this summer something to remember. Here’s to a fabulous 2019...

riginally appointed to deliver a home in a different location, the project took a surprise turn. With the interior design, product design and manufacturing complete, the week OLALA INTERIORS started loading trucks and readying for installation, the team was advised of ‘a change of plan and venue’. The original home they were primed to furnish had since been sold and in its place was an exclusive property located in Clifton, Cape Town.

“We stopped everything and went back to the drawing board. A toned down, yet alluring modern industrial style was redesigned into a layered and more glamorous look and feel”, says Schanè Anderson, CEO and Creative Director of OLALA INTERIORS. Schanè also had to ensure that everything complimented and functioned at the new project site. The team arrived in Cape Town that same week to view the new canvass, which was a freshly painted new ‘white site’ with Phase 1 furniture as planned for the original installation. In the following weeks, Schanè and her team turned the project around, travelling to find exclusive designer pieces, hunting for fabulous art, and for the team at the OLALA INTERIORS factory to make the custom designed cabinetry. Schanè says “We then re-grouped on-site to install, complete and handover the finished project!”

This was a client-centered project – as are all OLALA INTERIORS’ projects. The company loves the fact that their clients (and this client in particular) are well traveled, enlightened and authentic. “OLALA INTERIORS clients generally have very strong opinions and definitely know what rock their boats”, laughs Schanè. “In the first project completed for this client, I designed and made a deepmidnight-blue buttoned sofa”, says Schanè. “The client loved it then, and still loves it now”. That cemented the clients favourite interior colour scheme: black with saturated blues, deep sapphires, cobalt and navy. Schanè has two loves: black and velvet. “So now I have a client who loves black, who adores velvet, who travels extensively, who has an amazing eye for design, and who fell

Designed by Jane Visser of Visser Architects, the home has four storeys, five bedrooms, 3,9m high ceilings, bare white walls and panoramic views from the Twelve Apostles to Clifton’s beaches - This was the blank canvas that OLALA INTERIORS got to work with. LIGHTING UP
YOUR LIFE Use beautifully designed, on trend lighting to illuminate the perfect mood and ambiance in your spaces. Be inspired to achieve the sometimes elusive balance of the practical and the aesthetic.
T
he right light lifts the mood, inspires productivity and motivates us. At home, light enlivens the little things - our morning routines, or the moments we spend with friends. Any designer will tell you that lighting is an essential ingredient when you’re decorating a room - not the afterthought that many of us consider it. If you’re tempted to spend more of your time picking out furnishings or puzzling over layouts, remember that lighting can completely transform a space — not just by brightening dark corners, but by affecting
your emotions. Every room in your home should have a good mix of lighting including overhead, accent and task lights. Choosing lighting fixtures is one of the details you need to plan when decorating a new space. But the decision is not easy, not even if you’re planning a simple makeover or renovation. You need to be organized and to take things one by one, room by room. Michael Anderson, one of OLALA INTERIORS’ designers based in Cape Town, sheds some light on some of his favourite lighting fixtures that he has taken a shine to.

PROJECT HOUSE SALT ROCK LOCATION KWAZULU NATAL NORTH COAST ARCHITECTS METROPOLE ARCHITECTS DESIGN ARCHITECT NIGEL TARBOTON PROJECT ARCHITECT DAVID LOUIS PHOTOGRAPHY GRANT PITCHER

esigned by Metropole Architects, the house is 530 square meters of bold, modern architecture. Because the home was to be situated on a steep site, the architects designed a progressive cantilever form over three cascading levels, representing an uninhibited architectural expression, free from restrictive stylistic design guidelines. “This bold architecture brings the great South African coastal outdoors in and then, in turn, encourages the inhabitants to venture out into it”, says Metropole Architects. The OLALA INTERIORS journey with the owners of this fabulous home initially started with specifications of the soft furnishing. This very quickly progressed to the detailing and design of the interior architectural and functional elements too. OLALA INTERIORS

All the bathroom vanities, cabinetry, solid wood dining table, plasma units and built-in cabinetry were specially designed and

The result is a world-class quality installation. “From the moment I walked in the door of this home I felt welcome”, says Grant Pitcher, the photographer who truly captured the essence of the home. “Welcome to showcase the magnificent architecture that made every aspect of this home a majestic viewing space for the Indian Ocean below. A WORD FROM ONE OF OUR
DESIGNERS
With a fascination and love for design and spaces, Ballito based Interior Designer, Melanie Stuart, shares her design style and inspirations.
D
escribe yourself in three words. Passionate, determined and compassionate.
How & why did you get into the design Industry? I have always had a fascination and love for design and spaces, what they each represent and what they can become with a little attention to detail. I was fortunate enough to study at Inscape Design College in Pretoria, where my studies furthered my passion in making me the designer I am today. How would you describe your design style? How varied are your designs? Do you have a signature touch with your designs? Because we design for clients with various requirements and design styles, it is hard to have one particular design style in our industry. I do definitely gravitate to modern contemporary with lots of detail to open plans, and attention to natural light. My personal touch comes in to play by really listening to clients wants and needs, adding elements of their personalities to create a space they have always wanted.
// MELANIE STUART Interior Designer OLALA INTERIORS Ballito Branch
What do you love about being a designer & where do you draw your inspiration from? It would have to be the places I get to see (locations and amazing homes) and the people I get to meet. There is something very special about being invited into a persons home to become part of their design dream. I draw inspiration from getting to know my clients and listening to what they envision for their home. The emotion of the space and the setting are also very much taken into account.
Keep up to date with the latest trends & designs. This ensures that every design you undertake is timeless. // 72
What are some of your most popular designs/projects? This is a difficult question to answer as each project that I have worked on has had an aspect that I loved - from designing office spaces, residential homes on the coast overlooking the ocean, lush inland forest locations, to New York styled loft apartments in the heart of Johannesburg - It would be too difficult to choose just one! Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment? All the projects that I am currently working on are exciting as all of them are so different! We have new builds, renovations of existing homes and office designs - Each project has its own element of excitement. What colours, textures & furniture pieces do you love the most? Another hard question to answer! Each of these elements lends itself to the design of the home and it’s different spaces. Some projects have shades of light greys, whites and natural woods with furniture that is soft and appealing to the eye, while others need darker shades with hints of brass and gold to create the desired effect with dramatic furniture to match. It is important to combine and balance the colours, textures and furnishings to match each project. What is your philosophy on design & life? Do everything with passion, kindness and have fun in the business of life! When you are happy, it flows into everything you do. Make the best of bad situations, your bad day is as bad as you make it. What are your design dreams? To continue creating dream homes for people in their image as well as mine, challenging the design industry to its fullest and making a unique home every single time. In your opinion, which will be the top trends in interior design for 2019? Individuality, uniqueness and distinctive quality. Over the years community living has become ever more popular and the sense of privacy is one of the most sought-after qualities in community living. Each home needs its own identity and sense of uniqueness. What & who are some of your design inspirations? You can find inspiration in anything if you look long enough! Inspiration is drawn from the clients you are designing homes for, and the location they are situated in. There
are so many designers worldwide that I as a designer learn from every day, design trends are so different across the globe. I think it is so important to learn from global designs and bring them home to add to our own design style. What piece in your portfolio are you most proud of? Each and every project that I have worked on has led me to the here and now, working for one of the most amazing interior design companies in South Africa! I am proud of each project as they have helped me grow into the designer I am today and will continue to push me to evolve and grow. What do you need to consider when designing? Every aspect in a house needs to be taken into account from the flow of the spaces in conjunction with the furniture (built in and freestanding) to the functionality, to the lighting (natural and fixed). That has to work with the colours, mood, tone and textures used to create the desired effects. What are a couple of questions you’d ask to discover your client’s requirements? Meeting a client on-site and having them take you through their home and seeing how they react to the different spaces gives you an idea of what to ask and to determine what they require in each space. Where do they spend most of their time? Living room, kitchen, bedrooms? This helps me ascertain where to focus key design elements. How do you keep up with industry changes? We are fortunate enough keep up with national and international trends by attending many industry events and seminars, as well as visiting trade shows in Paris, Milan, China, India and New York. This keeps us current and assists us in applying new trends in all the fields of design. Do you prefer functionality or appeal? Definitely both, they work hand in hand in completing a successful end product.
