think you will agree that the two homes featured in this issue have that definite wow factor. A house, fabulous or not, is not simply bricks and mortar - it’s the finishing touches, the design details — the art, the accessories, the textures and colours, the fittings, the fixtures - that truly make a house a home. Schanè Anderson drove the design on a dream home, infused with soft blues, in the ever gorgeous Zimbali Coastal Estate, where family and friends can be entertained in elegant style, while Debbie Steinhobel created and delivered the design on a home that makes extraordinary use of colour, light, and textiles (page 58). Situated in Simbithi Eco Estate, this strikingly contemporary, minimalistic home is a haven of cool with generous indoor-outdoor space. Although each of the homes featured in this issue are distinctly different, all illustrate a common truth: interior designers are interpreters—artists of space who take a vision and make it come to life. The artistry of collecting and assembling objects and materials is masterfully demonstrated in the OLALA INTERIORS retail showroom. Krystel-lee Terblanche takes us on a tour of this fabulous space and gives us a taste of the inner workings and enthusiastic energy of the team that makes it all work. We’ve also included a roundup of chic and elegant rugs. A must have design essential, they are soft underfoot with the ability to anchor and finish off a space, Michael Anderson gives us the lowdown on rugs in all their current and on-trend colours, styles and textures (page 24). OLALA INTERIORS scooped yet another International Property Award in the category Interior Design - Private Residence, cementing the company’s international acclaim. And hot on the heels of this award, OLALA Interiors has been shortlisted for none other than three categories in the upcoming International Design & Architecture Awards. Currently in its 10th anniversary year, these awards showcase the best global designs that are as innovative as they are diverse both culturally and geographically. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony to take place in central London on Friday 20 September 2019. Follow the links on page 10 & 11 to vote for us!
And last but not least, we chatted to OLALA INTERIORS hands on Factory Manager, Riaan Grobbelaar, who shared some insight into the world of custom, bespoke furniture design and manufacture. We hope you find the inspiration for the rooms and spaces in your life— go beyond your routine and let your imagination soar...

oldly patterned or sublimely mono-chromed, rugs have the ability to draw a room together, create boundaries and to establish an overall balanced look.
Rugs and carpets are becoming a must-have design essential rather than a simple necessity, with muted shades making subtle statements, along with artisanal carpet trends. A great rug can magically transform a room—but its potential doesn’t stop at the floor. From the dining room to the bedroom to the bathroom, use rugs creatively and get inspired to beautify your interiors. Whether you use them on floors, walls or draped over furniture, textures play an important role - soft like silk or hard like sisal? Shiny or matte, cut pile or looped - the options are endless. The pricing of rugs is very much dependent on the fibres and methods used to manufacture. You literally get what you pay for. Machine made rugs are always made with man-
made and sometimes even recycled man-made fibres and are generally affordable with pricing starting anywhere from R550 per square meter. Handwoven rugs traditionally use natural fibres such as wool and cotton mixes, which come at a raised premium and start at around R3,800 per square meter.. Hand-tufted is time intensive and is generally priced dependent on the amount of colours used and the intricacy of pattern and design. The most expensive is the handknotted rugs, the majority of contemporary designs which come from the India / Nepal regions. Pricing starts from about R7,800 per square meter ranging up to R22,000 per square meter for beautifully intricate designs with high knot counts and high silk content. And when it comes to outdoor carpet trends, be more exploratory than a novice and challenge yourself with a seriously bold and decadent colour, much like the ochre rug featured to the left. Washable, durable and undeniably stylish, these outdoor rugs will dress floors both inside and out. Here Michael Anderson from our Cape Town office gives us a few of those endless options to consider... OLALA INTERIORS

A dream home where family and friends can be entertained, infused with blues.

lue is the colour of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. And who doesn’t want a bit of heaven in their home? Owned by an astute businessman and commercial property developer, this family home situated in Zimbali Coastal Estate, was the culmination of his vision and identity. The OLALA INTERIORS team collaborated with the sole aim of bringing his wishes to life. And to life they came!
With the walnut and marble clad stairs welcoming you into the home, the Raimond Puts Pendants allow you to peek into the universe even on cloudy nights. Designed by a mathematics professor, the Raimond is a sphere created from a series of triangular shapes. The intricate spheres of Raimond transport the electrical current. The LED terminals then join these paths to create an atmospheric ambiance. The transparent lenses are specially detailed to spread warm white light in every direction. Functional may as well be beautiful.

The main living area or formal lounge is lit by two vast hammered bronze candle holders. Focussing on sustainability, Schanè chose wallpaper with water-based colours, organic coatings and recycled fibre. The wallpaper used on the columns is by Omexco, who specialize in sophisticated printing and embossing techniques. A team of in-house designers is in permanent dialogue with a highly qualified production team to create new designs, unexpected visual effects, subtle colours and creative textures. The paper is enhanced with a shimmer of gold, silver or copper, reflecting light shimmering as sunshine plays through the windows.
The materials, textures and fabrics have been used beautifully. “It is important
to use a lot of textures when you layer rooms. A very good example of this is the beautifully textured chenille punctuated by a metallic effect ribbon, gives a glamorous touch to an understated design. This also brings up the golds again reflected not only in the wallpaper but also in the candle holders and tables”, says Schanè. The Tibetan hand-knotted rug, made of 100% wool and silk, once again plays on the coppers and rusted golds used in the scheme. Scatters ROMO Black Abiko Eucalyptus.

The light fitting used in the staircase leading upstairs is the Moooi Heracleum. A very fine pendant lamp, its designer was inspired by the fascinating Heracleum plant. The 63 white leaves/lenses out of polycarbonate enclose the modern LED illuminants. They derive out of a very naturally looking structure out of wire mesh. These leaves/lenses are not frozen into one position and you are able to freely adjust them. Moooi offers the canopy of the Heracleum with the surface either in nickel or in copper.
Architecturally designed to be airy and light by architect, Nitesh Sing from Ergonomic Architecture, nature comes naturally to you in this free flowing home. The OLALA INTERIORS team fittingly fulfilled the brief and added texture, colour and beautiful lighting to the natural ambiance of this magnificent home.

masculine room with panelled stitched headrest and general pedestals with views over Zimbali Lakes and the ocean. A monotone colour scheme repeating the stormy, moody blues and charcoals. With a dark linen velvet by Mark Alexander on the headboard and an occasional chair and footstool in Quintana shadow chenille [Chenille is the French word for caterpillar whose fur the yarn is supposed to resemble]. What s the difference between velvet and chenille? Chenille looks and feels very similar to velvet, but is made using a different process. Velvet has a smooth and even surface, while chenille’s texture is generally more nubby. But both are great upholstery fabrics. Flanking the bed are rose gold aluminium tube LED lighting. was designed by Nika Zupanc for the unique manufacturer Moooi. Just as Nabokov did with his literary character ‘Lolita’, designer Zupanc plays simultaneously with traditions and stereotypes, with frivolity and bourgeois. She embedded these characteristics skilfully and not without irony into the Lolita product line: lace borders, the colour pink, almost cute-naïve shapes. Lolita is topped by a diecast shade with glossy lacquer on the outside, while the inside is optionally decorated with gold coating. Thistledown velvet used on headboard: A sumptuous velvet with a charming, subtly mottled appearance, presented in a sophisticated palette of neutral shades and rich tones. VON VILLA LOCATION SIMBITHI ECO ESTATE

PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN ROWLEY
S
ituated in Simbithi Eco Estate on the Dolphin Coast in KwaZulu Natal, this sumptuous home with sweeping views of the golf course and greenbelt, is a home away from home for it’s owners and is used for (very) regular weekend getaways. The owners love for this area began 22 years ago in nearby Umhlanga and since then, the couple have built three homes on the dolphin coast and have definitely learned a thing or two!
This contemporary, minimalistic designed home is a haven of cool with generous indooroutdoor space.
“In our initial meeting with the client, the brief was to create a contemporary, minimalist home with just a touch of drama”, says Debbie Steinhobel, Managing Director of OLALA INTERIORS. The sublimely dramatic entrance of the home makes a perfect introduction to the rest of the home. Alan Barnard from Alan Barnard Architects says “In our practice, we have a few architectural philosophies when designing houses like this. One of those philosophies is to have a great sense of entry into the home and I think this has been achieved here because albeit large, it’s mostly the view that captivates when you enter the home.” Adding a specially commissioned, striking portrait painting by Mabette Vermaak to the entryway elegantly adds to the drama. Debbie adds “A dark coloured exterior was chosen for this home because it works exceptionally well in a contemporary setting. It highlights against the natural landscape - the contrast between dark and light just suits this particular home.” OLALA INTERIORS

After the client expressed how much they enjoy open plan living, a free-flowing ground floor comprising of the kitchen, dining room and living room with the beautiful pool area in front and the stunning courtyard behind was successfully designed facilitating natural air-conditioning, much needed in the all year balmy climate of the Dolphin Coast. Visual interest is built up in different layers, with an overarching sense of warmth, elegance and calm, that feels majestic and welcoming. The living spaces maintain a neutral, tonal palette,
// 62
and Debbie made use of many natural elements throughout for a fresh sense of luxury living. In the ground floor living area, distressed leather scatter cushions on the fabulously intimate U-shaped sofa, designed by OLALA INTERIORS, creatively paired with a charming chenille flat weave MURANO rug [a painterly brush-stroke design with textural layers of colour innovatively interpreted] from the ROMO collection by Louis De Poortere, ensure a varied juxtaposition of textures.
// DOWNSTAIRS LIVING AREA Varied textures and fabrics in soft palettes. The Otishi wallpaper, by ROMO with an alluring wood grain design created by fine metallic lines, displays subtle movement and intriguing detail.
OLALA INTERIORS
// 63
// 64
Naturally beautiful elements combined with statement pieces create a unique space. From the wooden sculpture in the courtyard to the teak root bases used on the patio table and also in the entrance tables topped with glass, add another layer of natural elements. The courtyard was key to Alan’s design. “Another philosophy of ours is to bring courtyards into our designs and we did so here by opening the courtyard up to the sky so we brought light and air into the room and a free-flowing breeze throughout the living area”, says Alan.
“It also creates a fabulous spot to relax and unwind. Free-flowing, connected dining areas were a must for entertaining. We added the hanging chairs in the courtyard, which are so whimsical and a beautiful wood sculpture all just makes it a cozy space to be in”, adds Debbie. OLALA INTERIORS
// 65
ELEGANT DINING AREA The space makes for // a memorable feature. The starting point for the design was the dining table with its geometric base and thin sleek top. The hand-crafted leather chandelier over the dining table as well as the use of leather on the dining chairs is practical as well as adding fantastic texture - both helping to pull the scheme together.
Free-flowing, connected dining areas were a must for entertaining.

// GEOMETRIC TABLE BASE custom made by OLALA INTERIORS adds a subtle modern twist.
// CONTINUING with the geometric theme, hand blown glass vases with the protea flower which symbolizes change and transformation across cultures.

FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP & FOOD A place to celebrate all three in this expansive, bespoke kitchen created for socialising & entertaining...
// 68
Flooded with natural light, the sleek and cleanly minimal kitchen is sublime in whites and charcoal. The most important aspect of the kitchen is the centre island, which is one solid block of stone, it really has a dramatic effect, topped off with hanging pendant lights with a touch of gold and blown glass. The kitchen complements the architecture of the space by focussing on delivering perfect flow between the multiple living and entertaining spaces. A place to celebrated family, friends and food, it was important for the hob to face the living area, so one can still chat to guests while cooking.

The private upstairs lounge is a cohesion of minimalistic combined with the beautiful warmth in this space. There is an interesting story behind the artwork by Phila Mabaso. Phila was actually a waiter when the owners first met him and he is now a full time artist - all his hard work and creativity

have certainly paid off. Debbie drew inspiration from the artwork, which compliments the room beautifully, to choose the colour scheme. It adds to the luxurious touches. Debbie used light coloured sofas to add glamour and elegance. “OLALA INTERIORS designed the sofas to compliment each other. They are oversized
and comfy - you can really sit down here with your friends and enjoy a glass of wine, says Debbie. Aviva Stanoff Endless Summer delicate palm leaf wallpaper was used to create deliberate luxury, paired with a soft silky rug to ensure luxury underfoot. Extra glamour was added with the molecule lights.
Sculptural lights add a nice element that pulls the room together. The fire pit is also part of this intimate private space. It was designed dropped down a level, so that when you are standing in the doorway, you can get a lovely view of the fire from the room.

The sleeping area still has its own privacy even though it is part of a bigger suite - a feature wall was incorporated into the design to separate the master en-suite from the bedroom emphasising the notion of openplan living. Many different velvets and wallpapers were used in this space. The clients fell in love with the hand-blown glass pendants the moment they saw them and they had to be one of the features of this room.

// GUEST BEDROOM The
clients wanted a touch of drama in this room and they definitely wanted a black and white room. Debbie used a very striking black and white geometric pattered wallpaper that sets the tone for the room. Gold accents on the hanging pendants along with the riotously floral scatters take things to next level glamour.

INSIDE THE FURNITURE
FACTORY
Hands on Factory Manager, Riaan Grobbelaar, shares some insight into the world of custom, bespoke furniture design and manufacture.
B
RIEFLY DESCRIBE YOURSELF I like to get things done! I enjoy building people up and helping them make the most of themselves and their particular talents. HOW & WHY DID YOU GET INTO THE FURNITURE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY? Originally from Gauteng, I started out with my own furniture manufacture and installation company 11 years ago after seeing a niche in the market for quality, custom made furniture. I have a passion for working with my hands and seeing a project through to completion is important to me. Furniture manufacture has become more and more bespoke and the opportunity to create custom pieces is increasingly important in our industry. FAMILY LIFE? I am married to Lizelle (13 years) and we have two children (Nicole 10yrs and Ryan 6yrs). I enjoy any and all things adventurous (spear fishing, kayaking, anything that gets your blood pumping), I’m a rugby fanatic and do also

enjoy golf. My wife and I made the move down to Ballito in 2012 and we both started at Olala Interiors, with Lizelle in the design office and myself in the furniture manufacturing division. YOUR ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES? As the most senior person in the factory, I take responsibility for all activities of the factory including the day-to-day operations such as scheduling, time and quality management, providing leadership to the team and developing strategic plans to increase production and revenue. My objectives are usually tied to the amount and quality of the items that the factory is producing. DESCRIBE THE TEAM YOU WORK WITH? Dynamic and hardworking - they are a team of highly skilled craftsmen with extensive experience in furniture manufacture and installation. There is a great sense of camaraderie in the factory - it has taken time to get there but my team and I have learnt that you can enjoy your work and have fun
doing it - this possibly makes our products all the more fantastic! Our cohesive team has a strong work ethic, I’ve tried to put people together who work well and gel. The team is around 23 strong, consisting of a site manager, installers, a floor manager who oversees cutting, first and final assembly, sanding and preparation, spray-painting and finishing.

tables, occasional tables, bedroom pedestals, headboards and coffee tables - it’s a BIG one! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE/PRODUCT/MATERIAL? I have so very many favourites. Driving around seeing homes that we have produced products for or done installations at, gives me a great sense of pride. My favourite raw material has got to be solid wood, particularly oak, ash and American walnut. DESCRIBE THE DESIGN & MANUFACTURING PROCESS? The Olala Interiors designers meet with their respective clients and bring the overall design brief to the factory. We discuss different ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY SPECIAL PROJECTS AT THE MOMENT? An 1800 square meter home! We are manufacturing and installing all the kitchen cabinetry, counter tops, scullery, laundry, built in cupboards, plasma units, study desks incorporated into cupboard units, bathroom vanities, dining room
concepts and incorporate any technical knowledge and issues, then go about choosing materials and discuss production strategy - as you go along you can see what works and what doesn’t, take the design and use knowledge to see if we can make it work to be functional. This is then discussed with the manufacturing team and manufacture begins. VISION OF THE FUTURE? WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? On a beach, somewhere warm! No really, I want the factory to be expanded to full capacity and running as seamlessly as possible.
Be understandable, approachable & have the right mindset - your team will appreciate it.” OLALA INTERIORS
