Who Am I

M

y creative outlook on life has led me to immerse myself into various avenues. One of them being photography; which I take part in both leisurely and to a professional degree, as a freelance photographer. Through my photography work I have explored image composition and continue to amass a body of work that manipulates perspective and space, inspired by visual artist Chema Madoz. I have also taken part in some campaigns and projects in the male fashion and tailoring industry assisting in fashion shows. Aside from being a fun experience, alongside my own visual blog, I have gained an insight into the sartorial choices of the world’s best dressed men.

What do I want to study

D

evelopments in urban design and the research into mapping processes have been part of my personal learning. James Corners “The Agency of Mapping informed my ability to interpret mapping conventions, which I have used to both critically analyse stylized maps and improve my own work. Looking ahead to an uncertain future; and the threat adverse weather conditions pose to society, I have become involved in research that explores advancements in resilient and responsive city design. I plan to develop this exploration and actively take part in the research culture of the school.

I always look to the work of Aldo Rossi and the PLM railway vintage railway posters to inform my graphical investigations. The graphical house styles of Salottobuono and DOGMA studios have heavily influenced my attitude to graphical representation and increased my understanding in this area. I am excited at the prospect of engaging in graphical and theoretical experiments as a result of the quality studio, workshop and CAD facilities. I anticipate working with such facilities, will aid in achieving my best potential of work.

Newnham Home A three-bedroom purpose built holiday home designed for a private client in the Kent woodlands. The concept was a modern update to the dated, derelict lodge on site. As part of the company’s new marketing strategy, I was asked to use my graphical representational skills to provide visualisations of a key project. Required testing out a few visualisation software suited to business needs, once they were mastered I passed the new knowledge to my colleagues. Church Survey and Columbarium Design Carried out site visit to church to complete measured survey of church vault, produced photographic, video and hand drawn sketches back to the office. Using notes and evidence provided existing plans, sections and elevations drawings for client. Used information gathered as a result of conversation with existing columbarium’s, urn suppliers and site visits to existing columbarium’s, to work out standard dimensioning and inform design character. Provided proposed plans, elevations and section drawings, all with building instructions which were then sent to client for comment.

Planning Drawings and Application They property was recently bought by the current owners who wish to extend and refurbish the property. The site sits on a quiet one way road of historical significance. The layout of the house has been designed to improve movement and bring a greater amount of daylight into the house. We propose removing the existing rear single storey ground floor kitchen extension and replace it with a new rear extension covering the back yard.

Response | Dagenham Dock Transport Hub Project year: Building Size : Building Type: Building: Location: Programs used:

2013

The project seeks to be a response to a given problem, environment or technology advancement.

Transport

A disadvantage of the City of London is the notion that all aspects of living should tend towards the central borough(s), negating the importance and hence development of peripheral boroughs (i.e., Greater London).

two, in chemistry. Also a term closely likened to

London AutoCAD

Richard Rogers idea of the compact city, a city that “grows around the centres of social and commercial activity located at public transport nodes” (Rogers, 1997, 38). A combination of the two ideas creates Polyvalent City. Polyvalent City, seeks to utilise the strength of transport to build links between the London.

Adobe Illustrator 3DSMax

Rail travel was the preferred method of travel studied for the project. Railway Stations are not simply dispatch facilities, but above all should be seen as major parts of our environment which have clear right to be designed as ‘environmental space’ as also is the case with our roads, bridges and tunnels. Rail Travel, in polyvalent city, acts as a catalyst to a cityscape centred on future industries, commerce and technology. As the stations are built in the Dagenham Dock area, new industries and residential areas

N o. 1 8

replace the old, derelict industrial factories of the dock. An extension of the Dagenham Docklands Railway from the city should establish Dagenham as a modern industrial area, similar to Silicon Valley, embodied by the type of industries proposed in the masterplan. A terminus station in the midst of commercial and industrial technology further establishes the city as destination for employment and residence.

Transport is a major part of Polyvalent City. The passing Channel Tunnel Rail Link creates a special opportunity to form a truly polycentric city. own brief. I decided to investigate further the notion of Iconography in architecture. Stemming from the belief the church (or temple) is seen as iconic in religion. Religious architecture, however, has been replaced by buildings that celebrate the new ‘religion’ – consumerism. The places of worship are now

places of consumerism, the shopping mall, the museum, exhibitions etc. I have designed a building that represents the height manipulated and monitored, a stock exchange building. The building includes an area where high end goods are sold and displayed and gallery spaces for exhibitions – as a metaphor of consumerism.

Sustainable Design

Newark Pavillion

Challenged to create a series of intervention along the Newark City waterway. My idea was to create a pavilion along the site, that provided a quiet, quaint reflective respite on the trail. Using sustainable locally sourced, from neighbouring Newark forestry wood and a simple construction process. Built in photovoltaic shutters both catch the power naturally from the sun but at night provide a playful colour emitting light show.

The shoe maker

Investigation into the production and manufacturing process of footwear, particularly the creation of sneakers. For this project I wanted the building to reflect the bright colourful nature of the sneaker manufacturer. I split the building into the areas, making sure the manufacturing process was performative in nature. As customers design and speak to consultants they would also be able to see the trainers being made in the workshop.
