“While we try to teach children all about life; children are teaching us what life is all about.” -Angela Schwindt
H
ow often do you get to go back to preschool and act like a little kid again, playing with Play-Doh and coloring? A group of nine Olathe East students along with other high schoolers from the district get the opportunity every day. How? By joining the 21st century program, ECCO, Early Child Career Opportunities, taught by Kristin McDonald who also teaches at Johnson County Community College. This program is located at Harmony Childhood Center first and second hour, and Heartland Learning Center sixth and seventh hour. The course is designed around learning the development of children and helping them grow as well as teaching high schoolers how to grow. ECCO is not just book work Monday-Friday; the time is split in the classroom with the preschoolers and then in the high school room learning about the children. ECCO 1 teacher Kristin McDonald stated, “The purpose of any high school student enrolled in the program is to engage and encourage higher level thinking and appropriate problem solving skills with the preschool children. While working with the preschool children, it is essential that we all serve as a positive role model and that we focus on best practice.” The teachers in the variety of classrooms help the high school students how to deal with issues that arise in the classroom. Some of these issues could be calming a child down, sitting with a child during circle time to help them keep focused on the lesson, and working on their academic development. The agenda all depends on what classroom the high schoolers are assigned to and what the teacher needs help with on that given day. The classroom environment gives students that are interested in teaching children an occasion to learn about the social and academic learning process. Senior Allie Hicks stated, “Watching the preschoolers progress throughout the year and knowing you have helped gives you a sense of accomplishment. Seeing their face light up when you first help them off the bus, or when you walk into the

classroom just puts a smile on your face. The preschoolers truly look up to you.” Twice a week, the high school students gather in a classroom where they talk about the child development process through various films and powerpoints. ECCO uses a textbook the high schoolers read throughout the year, complete worksheets, then have tests just like any other class. “Discussions would consist of and involve families and early childhood, focusing heavily on the preschool years and building relationships with the families of children we work with. In the later part of the year, focus will lend itself to planning and implementing of developmentally appropriate activities, resume building and career planning.” said McDonald. To be accepted into the class, students must complete paperwork and turn it in on time. Tours to visit the school will be in the spring time before signing up for the class. Both locations fill up quickly and students that are interested must make a deciMorning students involved ECCO sion early in the Courtesy of Brianne Grudek process for next year otherwise they will end up on the waiting list. Juniors that take the class are able to sign up the following year for ECCO 2 where they get assigned to elementary schools and learn further into the development of children as they progress older. Senior Lauren Post who is involved in ECCO stated, “ECCO is great class because you learn a lot about young ones and everyone in the class has a similar passion for kids.” For all those sophomores and juniors, if you are interested on going into a field that involves children, ECCO would be a fantastic class for you to get insight on teaching and helping children grow as they get older. “Just be yourself, and definitely don’t sign up for the class unless you like hands on working with kids. It’s really a great opportunity and a great class, ”ECCO student junior Corrina Tuttle summed it up.

Olathe East students cope with fluctuating gas prices Lauren Hart//Staff Writer
R
ising gas prices can cause financial despair for many people, especially for high school students. The price of gasoline seemingly changes. The average gas price in Olathe at this time is $3.17, relatively low compared to previous years. So why exactly do gas prices change overnight? According to Forbes, influctuation of gas prices is based on several different aspects. Global politics, supply and demand, and seasonal prices all contribute to the rise in prices.
“
I don’t have time to work during the school year because of sports, so I worked in the summer and use that money to fill up my car.
Jordan Wolfe, junior, babysat over the summer in order to save up money to buy gas during the school year. “I don’t have time to work during the school year because of sports, so I worked in the summer and use that money to fill up my car.” Dominick Kerr, Senior, works at the YMCA in order to earn money to pay for his own gas. “I usually spend 40 dollars filling up every other week. It just depends on how much I drive.” Brad Schoonover, a senior, spends 60 dollars filling up his tank every three weeks or so. “I save up Christmas and birthday money as well as some job money to pay for my gas.” Kennedy Poro, sophmore, pays for her own gas in the summer. “I pay for my own gas in the summer because I drive places for fun. It’s not like I am driving to school or work or anyplace I have to be.”

Global Politics: The United States is the third largest crude oil producer in the world, but less than 40% of our oil comes from U.S. oil refineries. The United States gets most of their oil from the Middle Eastern and South American OPEC nations, which stands for Organization of Petroleum Countires. Although we get a lot of oil from Saudi Arabia, they are not our main supplier of oil. Canada, Mexico, Iraq, and Venezuela are among the other countries the U.S. buys oil from. Turmoil and fighting in the Middle East also can cause gas prices to rise. When war breaks out in OPEC nations, expect to see a hike in the prices.
Supply and Demand/Seasonal Prices: Supply and demand of gasoline goes hand in hand with seasonal prices of gasoline per gallon. The amount of oil available and how often people fill their tanks up largely determines the price of gasoline per gallon. With low demand for oil, one can expect low prices at the pumps. The price for gasoline tends to drop in the winter months because oil is more valuable at certain times. Facts have proven that gas prices tend to be higher in the summer. This relates back to the demand of gas and oil. Demand for gas is higher in the summers when people travel more often and for longer distances . Seniors John Blazevic and Zach Mulhall, both shared how they pay for their gas. Zach said, “I do stuff around the house because I don’t have a job.” John said, “I usually get my money to fill up my car from Zach.” They both spend around 30 dollars filling up their cars every other week. Their tip: do not fill your tank up all the way. Junior, Morgan Hodges, said, “I normally fill up my car every weekend or every other weekend. It just depends on how much I drive,” she says. She has a job at her church and at Chick-fil-A so she still has money to spend. She said,”It would still be nice if I did not have to fill up my car though.” When she goes to fill up, she only fills the tank to about half full. Katie Adcock, senior, works at Kansas Sampler to earn money. “I usually spend 45 dollars every other week filling up my car.”
Many have dreamed of playing collegiate sports, but few know that there is much more that needs to be done then just catching a coach’s eye. In order to play collegiate sports at either the D1 or D2 level, a player needs to be what is called a qualifier, or meet all of NCAA’s eligibility requirements. Otherwise, the player can’t participate in games, leading to them having to redshirt their freshman year due to academic reasons. Currently, NCAA Division I requires 16 core courses and Division II requires 14, and starting August 1, 2013 Division II will require 16 core courses for students enrolling on or after the transition date. Also NCAA Division I will require 10-core courses to be completed prior to the second semester of senior year. The classes must be a combination of English, math, and natural or physical science that meet their other distribution requirements. Beginning August 1, 2015 athletes will be able to receive athletic aid and practice but not compete if he or she fails to meet the 10-course requirement. Both Division I and Division II have separate requirements for test scores. D1 has a sliding scale to match high school GPA with the corresponding test score needed to qualify. However, D2 only requires a minimum SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68. In order for the NCAA eligibility center to determine your amateurism eligibility for athletic participation
SPORTS
Kellan Richards// Staff Writer at a NCAA Division 1 or 2 college or university, they will ask questions about your athletic participation. Once gathered, this information will be reviewed and it will be determined whether or not your amateurism status should be certified or if you will need to be penalized before certification. Examples of pre-NCAA enrollment activities that may need to be reviewed: • Contracts with a professional team. • Salary for participating in athletics. • Prize Money. • Play with professionals. • Tryouts, practice or competition with a professional team. • Benefits from an agent or prospective agent. • Delayed initial full-time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized sports competition. • Any financial assistance based on athletics skills or participation. One of best ways to ensure that you are, or will become, a qualifier is to go through the NCAA eligibility center. For 50 dollars they provide the service of going through NCAA themselves and help you become eligible for both Division 1 or Division 2 if you answer the questions they provide. If you fall short of the requirements they also will notify you and help you become a qualifier. Each separate sport at every NCAA school has rules to follow. Keep this in mind and don’t be discouraged if you haven’t received any calls or invitations for visits, because depending on your sport, the coaches may not be able to recruit you in that way yet.

t’s around 6:00 and you’re just getting home from practice. Immediately, your eyes go for the kitchen. Hunger envelops you, and nothing else is more important. All you want is for your seemingly bottomless stomach to be satisfied. Food is essential to all athletes. The right nutrients and minerals are key to keeping an athlete healthy. Specifically for swimmers, protein is crucial. On average, swimmers needs at least 2,000 calories per day, sometimes more. Swimmers are suggested to eat four to seven light meals a day. Two Olathe East swimmers shared their diet.
Swimmer Jacob Bolli revealed his eating regime. Jacob’s choice of breakfast consists of cereal, waffles, and/or pancakes. Like Connor, Jacob has a hard time getting a good lunch. Jacob stated, “I eat the most unhealthy things ever, like two pieces of pizza and cookies.” On the other hand, Jacob’s mom often makes home-cooked meals for dinner. He said, “My mom makes some type of meat, vegetable, and fruit for dinner.” His preferred snack is a good healthy choice. Jacob stated, “Carrots. I love carrots. Also, fruit and chips.” Jacob thinks swim affects his diet immensely. He stated, “It makes me want to eat so much. Sometimes I’m hungry after eating my lunch.”
Jacob occasionally eats pancakes for breakfast. “Why would I not eat pancakes?” He stated.
A common false presumption about carrots is that they improve eyesight. While carrots are a good source of Vitamin A, they don’t directly improve eyesight.
Paige Schick//Staff Writer Varsity swimmer Connor Davey divulged to the Hawk’s Eye his outrageous swimming diet. Breakfast is crucial for any athlete, especially when practices are at 5:30 in the morning for swimmers. Connor said, “My mom makes me sausage and eggs. Then I eat two pieces of toast and Pop-Tarts.” Lunch is more limited due to what is available in the cafeteria. “I usually eat two pieces of pizza and chips. Then I go to the vending machine and get some more chips,” stated Connor. Snacks are a must for swimmers, as many of them consume 3,000 calories a day. Connor’s favorites include Pop-Tarts, Ritz crackers, chips, and Mountain Dew. Dinner varies for him, but Connor is a fan of Chipotle. He also stated, “Sometimes my mom makes a huge dinner.” To sum his diet up in one sentence, he stated, “I don’t ever stop eating.”
“
Behind the Number All athletes who play team sports wear a jersey with a number on the back, but some athletes care about their number more than others. At Olathe East, many athletes also have special meaning lying behind the number. Whether it honors a sibling, a favorite player or one of a million more reasons, a jersey number holds much more meaning than meets the eye.

Eating eggs for breakfast in the morning provides a 60% better metabolism.
On average, a bag of chips has around 150 to 200 calories. They have no real beneficial nutrients so eating them for a snack isn’t the best choice.

Have you every wanted to ask Dr. Weber, our two-year principal, about a policy he has instituted or his reason for running things the way he does? The Hawk’s Eye gathered questions from students for our principal. What improvements have you made or seen that you are happy with? “I think in terms of school spirit and support, in terms of growth, there is always room for improvement, but in terms of school events in games its all apart of the school experience and in terms of being able to go out and support the different entities and give people that support. My vision is constant improving in all areas. I’m really excited about all the progress in all areas. Just all the continuous success that we have had.” What is your favorite thing about being a principal at Olathe East? “I enjoy working with kids and staff and coming here on a daily basis, its one of those things where if you don’t enjoy coming to work you should find something else to do. Quite obliviously, I can say there is not a single day I don’t look forward to coming to work. I certainly enjoy being able to see continuous success from students, whether it is in academic areas, sport areas, or activity areas. Just being able to go to activities is fun for me.”

Why don’t we have open lunch? “Well, it’s a district policy not just an Olathe East policy. As far as district policy, it’s probably a safety issue…. And my guess is that not all of the business on 119th could handle the amount of students… I long term subbed at a high school in Junction City and the perspective people need to understand is that when you have open lunch you typically have longer lunches.” Why do seniors have to have full schedules? “It is in terms of school funding, it use to be state guideline that we received funding for students to leave do work experiences, basically that funding is gone. From the state perspective they feel like if we were assigning credits we should be teaching. We do have options for early release.” Why can’t we take backpacks into the lunch lines? “I think there are two phases to that. Number one, there is a pretty large increase in theft and that is making it hard for them to run their business down there and second of all not having backpacks in there helps with space.” What made you want to become principal? “I was a teacher for seven years and I was always intrigued about the administrative role and with the variety of task that goes along with the position, and with my personality it was a natural fit to be able to take on a variety of roles instead
Christmas isn’t the only major holiday this season Lauren Heinrich//Staff Writer

is the season everyone! With Christmas just around the corner, it’s easy to forget that not everyone will open a present on December 25th. Then again, people may not be aware of that. Different people celebrate different holidays, similar to Christmas in their own ways, at various times of the year according to their religion.
Sophomore Reem Alam celebrates Eid-al-Adha, a major Islamic holiday, every year with her family. Eid-al-Adha (also called the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’) is the remembrance of when Abraham made the sacrifice of his son, Isaac, to his God to prove his faith. Right before Abraham sacrificed his son, God recognized that he was dedicated to his faith and provided a goat to sacrifice instead. This is why today they still sacrifice goats on Eid-al-Adha. “You divide it into parts. You eat one, give one to your family and give one to poor people. It’s mainly for the poor people. [In] our family, we sacrifice three or four goats and give some to the poor,” Reem commented. This year in Kansas, Eid-al-Adha took place at the Overland Park Convention Center. This is celebrated two different times, once in August and once in October. Reem explained, “We don’t go to school on that day. We get up in the morning like at seven and we go to the OPCC. It’s not a church but we need a big hall because everyone [in Kansas] goes there. We dress up like crazy and have to look perfect. We go there and pray and then meet people. After that we go and do stuff, like going out to eat.” Normally when Muslims celebrate Eid-al-Adha, like they do in Saudi Arabia, they go to big churches and the celebration is everywhere. However, since Kansas is so small, only a few places celebrate it.

Another holiday is Hanukkah. Hanukkah falls on around the same time of the year as Christmas. Hanukkah is eight nights long and this year is celebrated on Saturday, December 8th until Sunday, December 16th. Junior Ariel Silverman celebrates Hanukkah with her family. She stated, “Just like how people put up Christmas decorations around their home for the holidays, we do that for Hanukkah.” Hanukkah dates back to the Greeks. As Ariel said, “There are really two ‘miracles’ of Hanukkah. The first was that the small amount of Jews who rebelled were capable of fending off the strong Greeks who detested them. The second miracle, that is represented by the menorah, was that when the Jews began to sanctify the temple they did not have enough oil to keep the Eternal Light going. However, with the small amount of oil, the Jews were able to keep the light going until more came.” Ariel and her family have traditions that they do to celebrate Hanukkah. “The main ‘activity’ my family does it to take out our own individual menorahs and put them so everyone can see them. My family also makes latkes, which are basically hash browns that have been formed into circles. We put up blue lights around our house. What my family does often is give each other small presents on each of the eight nights of Hanukkah and on one or two of the nights we give each other ‘big’ presents.” Ariel hopes to get an iPhone this year. Along with celebrating Hanukkah, Ariel and her family also celebrate Christmas. “A lot of people think that celebrating both rakes in tons of gifts, but it’s really a regular amount of stuff,” Ariel commented. “It’s one of my favorite holidays, because our traditions are so great!”
We all have our own holiday traditions and festive times of the year, but one thing remains the same. Spending time with family is key in celebrating the holidays. Without loved ones, the holidays would be lonely and miserable. This holiday season, be sure to spend it with the people you love and care so much about.

f you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Would you stop doing things you’ve become accustomed to, would you break habits that hold you in their iron grasp? If you didn’t read any of these questions and think “Yes, I would”, you without a doubt deserve to be commended for being absolutely perfect. However, that’s not all of us. Most of us have bad habits that loom over our heads that we acknowledge as a problem, yet we have never bothered to do anything about. from this comes the reasoning behind New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps this is your year to keep those resolutions, and break those habits. Here’s three tips to help.
Wit hout realizing that you have a bad habit, how can you go on to change yourself into a person that you are proud to be ? Having an open mind and taking a introspective look at your habits can help you to figure out which ones are affecting you positively-- and which ones are affecting you negatively.
As odd as it may seem to sit down and make goals for yourself and set plans to make them. Setting goals is a proven way to keep yourself away from failure. Having your goal written out for you to see everyday, is a friendly reminder to keep you from the temptation of your habits.
3. Stick to your goals
1. Make goals

2. Acknowlege your bad habit
Across the globe, thousands of charities exists in every category imaginable. The problem was a lack of three things- awareness, funding, and following. In the awareness category, many charities struggle to reach the ears of potential supporters. It wasn’t that they were bad charities, it was that no one had heard of them. In the funding category, many charities die in the early years of the start up phase. Paying employees, rent, and funding the cause cant happen without money. In the last category following, many charities had issues with support from followers because they didn’t connect enough with the followers about the cause. The solution to all these problems was Sevenly. Sevenly is a funding movement to raise awareness for the world’s causes. First, they partner and build 52 charity T-shirt campaigns per year. That means that they sell a new t- shirt for a new cause each week. Secondly, they give seven dollars to that week’s charity with every tee purchased. And lastly, at the end of the seven-day campaign, they send the charity a check. Items shown are products from the discussed charities
Another truly inspiring organization that can give back someone’s freedom is Falling Whistles. Falling Whistles is a campaign for peace in Congo. The founders took a trip to Africa to help out in the KONY efforts a while back, and found out what had been happening to the children there- they had been kidnapped from their homes and taken to the military camps. They stayed under poor conditions at the camps until they were needed, and were then sent to the front lines of the war with not a weapon, but a whistle. They were supposed to blow the whistle to start the fighting- and be the targets for the enemy to shoot at. By buying a whistle from their website, www.fallingwhistles.com, you can help protest against the war and raise money to stop this cruelty. Also, people will ask why you are wearing a whistle, and you can explain the story to them, and help them understand that there are greater problems out there than a chipped nail or a bad quiz grade. For more information on the full story of the boys of Congo, go to their website listed above. You won’t be sorry you did.
Do you absolutely love beanies? Then you definitely need to stop buying the flimsy ones from Urban Outfitters and start buying the handmade beanies from Krochet Kids. Their motto is “Buy a hat, change a life.” This non- profit organization has helped thousands of women who live in poverty in northern Uganda and Peru pick themselves up and earn their own money, instead of living off of government aid and never having enough to eat. By teaching these women how to crochet, college snowboarders took their love of making their own unique beanies for the slopes and helped turn many families’ lives around. By buying one of their hats, bowties, clothing, or scarves, you can donate your money to these women and receive a vibrant, comfy hat in the mail that ranges from $20 to $30. Look fabulous, and help out.
Even if you fail once or twice, don’t give up! One or two weak moments does not mean you habit is unbreakable. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to!

ome will cheer and some will cry as the worldwide phenomenon known as the Twilight saga comes to an end. This crazy popular series includes four books – Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn – that were turned into five movies, with the final fiction novel being broken into two parts. Teens around the world have swarmed around this series for years, choosing between the two men in the love triangle, Team Edward or Team Jacob. To add to the hoopla, shirts were made in order for the girls to show their support for their desired side. And then the saga soared. The motion pictures increased in popularity as each was released until, most recently, the final flick in the saga debuted: Breaking Dawn, Part Two. The novel that started it all, Twilight, was a new take on romance: one between humans, vampires, and werewolves. It captured the minds and hearts of millions of teenage girls everywhere. The break from normal romance novels seized their nightstand reading spots for four best sellers. After this novel’s release date in 2005, it reached the tops of many charts within three years. This work topped the charts off in 2008 and was second in 2009, behind the secondary piece in the series, New Moon. Twilight has been translated into 37 languages and snagged a spot on Publisher Weekly’s Best Children’s Books of 2005 list. Throughout all five movies, directors Bill Condon, Catherine Hardwicke, David Slade, and Chris Weitz have stuck with the soft piano pieces that move moviegoers with the complicated emotions that come with paranormal romance. Even choosing to include a piece from Robert Pattinson, the love-struck vampire in this saga, and the two part song written and sung by Christina Perry, “A Thousand Years”. Their choice of soundtrack connected the storyline and emotions wonderfully, carrying the crowds through the seasons that evolve with the desires and depressions of the main character, Bella Swan. These films have had much hype leading up to each flick premiere, which can leave watch-
ers disappointed as each movie closes, due to the lack of decent acting by some actors, Kristen Stewart, for example. Many of the scenes in each movie leave the viewer feeling like they’ve just gone to a soap opera instead of New Moon, for instance. The elevated drama consistent in each feature can be quite laughable and seem ridiculous because situations found in these novels and films are not ones that normal relationships experience. For example, not many teens can say that their boyfriend is moving somewhere far, far away because the locals are starting to notice that he doesn’t age. The dramatization that comes along with a romance is inevitable, but the rhetoric could be toned down a bit. While many critics focus on Kristen, the female teenage critics focus mostly on the guys of the movies: Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, who play vampire Edward Cullen and werewolf Jacob Black, respectively. Every time a shirt comes off, for any reason, all eyes go right to the abdominals and screams of joy can be heard from miles away. Any acting flaws are easily discarded because all the girls care about at that point relates to the attractiveness of the male leads. Without these scenes, would the series be as popular? Most likely, because the enthralling looks with clothes on still leave teenage girls dazzled. Despite how some people criticize the saga, the series is not as bad as many believe. The sequence of novels relates to teens engaged in a romantic relationship that go through rough patches and conflicts. Bella and Edward’s relationship shows the complexities of a teenage relationship and the obstacles many relationships must overcome in order to succeed. All in all, the contradictory saga is undoubtedly one of the biggest phenomenons of our generation. Everyone has their preferences that peers must respect. These romantic fictions and flicks ignite our imaginations, and are not as bad as All Courtesy of morguefile.com some folks swear.

Staycations Suck Home Sweet Home
Breakup Song - Deerhoof
Channel Orange - Frank Ocean Meet the new prince of hip-hop and R&B. Frank Ocean’s major label debut soared to number two on the charts earlier this year, propelling this young crooner to stardom. A member of the notoriously crude Odd Future rap collective, Frank’s smooth, soulful sound comes as very surprising to someone who has listened to the music of his peers. The album flows together amazingly well, making the hour-long record seem like half that. While tracks like “Bad Religion” and “Thinking ‘Bout You” show off his amazing vocal range, the album’s true climax is “Pyramids”, a ten-minute epic produced by Ocean himself. With simple, yet distinct instrumentals and a couple notable guest appearances (Earl Sweatshirt, Andre 3000, and John Mayer) Ocean makes a monumental breakthrough into the future of R&B and popular music as a whole. -AR
Celebration Rock - Japandroids
Feelings of remorse, nostalgia, and optimism build upon each other in order to create incredible music in Celebration Rock from Canadian alternative band Japandroids. Songs on Celebration Rock discuss the fear of ending years of youth, as in “Younger Us,” reflecting bitterly on the past, and yet still maintaining hopefulness for the future, as in the opening track, “The Nights of Wine and Roses.” The album closes with the noisy and reflective “Continuous Thunder,” followed by a finale of fireworks. This remorseful-yet-optimistic music comes from a two-piece band of Brian King on guitar and David Prowse on drums. The melancholic guitar riffs beautifully accentuate King and Prowse’s remorseful vocals. Japandroids’ excellent melodies and captivating style drive this album to be one of our favorites of the year. -JB
Local Business - Titus Andronicus Hailing from New Jersey, the band who takes their name from a Shakespeare play shows off just how theatrical they can be. The band’s lineup is a revolving door, with almost 20 former members since 2005, but founding member, guitarist and vocalist, Patrick Stickles manages to put together an immensely skilled band for every release and live show. Local Business is an indie rock album. Titus Andronicus is an indie rock band. That’s a reason for some people to brush an album or band off as being boring. This is not the case here. “In A Big City” showcases the band’s ability to write a piece of radio-friendly indie music while keeping all of the qualities that make their songs unique. “Food Fight!” shows the band has not lost its love of just rocking out, something their longtime fans love. Titus, along with a select number of bands, has reinvigorated the genre to an extent, putting the rock back in indie rock. -AR

Why go on a vacation when you can just not go on a vacation?
s another memorable year for music comes to an end, the time has come to stop and reflect on the year that was. Many traditional barriers were broken down on popular charts, with top ten hit singles by numerous foreigners, Canadians, Australians, Frenchmen, and for the first time ever, a Korean. Popular acts called it quits, relative unknowns reached incredible successes, and in the end, we were left with some groundbreaking music. So join us now for the Hawk’s Eye’s favorite albums of 2012.
In its eighteenth year of creating experimental music, Deerhoof reached another highpoint in its tempestuous history. This band seems to reinvent itself with every new album. With Breakup Song, Deerhoof increased electronic instrumental usage, allowing them to explore musical territories previously unexplored. Often, tempos and styles shift abruptly, with relatively symplistic lyrics, such as in “Mothball the Fleet,” “The Trouble With Candyhands,” and “Fete d’Adieu.” Excellent technical musicality mixed with lead singer Satomi Matsuzaki’s brilliant and unorthodox vocal style has always made Deerhoof stand out around other bands, and Breakup Song exemplifies their uniqueness even more. -JB

taycations suck. They aren’t even real. They are a mythical concept that some uptight scrooge thought up. According to the made-up definition that Wikipedia recognizes, a staycation is defined as a newly coined term for a period in which an individual or family stays and relaxes at home, possibly taking day trips to area attractions. That sounds fun right? In theory, they are great ways to unwind. Whoever invented staycations, patented the idea of doing nothing, and marketed this huge waste of time deserves to be commended because traveling was so hard to begin with. Even if you aren’t at the level of intelligence required to string together hotel reservations, flights, and daytime attractions, there is a whole field of the workforce dedicated to performing this menial skill for you. Our laziness ensures generations of employment for travel agencies across the globe. But why not destroy this idea all together? That’s where staycations come in. Staycations are engineered from the beginning to be massive letdowns. But hey, they sound good. The word just rolls off the tongue. When your friend happily announces that he is going on a cruise of the Japanese islands for vacation, you will just as happily announce that you are going to the arboretum for a staycation. Wrong. You will cower in embarrassment and mumble something about being unsure what your plans are. The problem with staycations is that they are hyped up to be this revolutionary way to gain a new perspective on your home, when in the end you just come away with more reasons to get away. But worse than that, they give an excuse for parents to decide against going on a vacation. Vacations are a chance to escape, get away, and
I am a huge fan of staycations. I love the challenge of tricking myself into believing they are a good time. -An Extremely Real Person

discover the world. As much as some people want to believe, you really can’t do any of that close to home. The essence of a vacation, physically being away from home, is taken away with a staycation. There is something indescribably fulfilling about visiting somewhere else. It doesn’t even have to be somewhere new, just somewhere away. But with a staycation, you aren’t ever really away. The only remotely cool thing about a staycation is saving money. But a new term did not need to be invented in order for people to realize that not going on a vacation is cheaper than going on one. Thanks to staycations, parents around the world have a reason to postpone that trip to an extravagant city in favor of rediscovering hometown attractions. This idea makes you a fool if you decide to waste your time in a far off place when you can pay less and get the same experience. The whole idea of a staycation seems to be just a local business marketing scam. And it’s working. But it is also being used counter intuitively. Some travel agencies have adopted slogans like “Staycations suck, take a vacation instead.” An online vacation planner website, Last Minute Travel, has even gone as far as funding a Staycations Suck Contest where applicants enter for a chance to win a real vacation. Sure, it may cost to actually enjoy yourself, but isn’t that part of the experience? Vacations are a privilege that we all look forward to, despite the impact they have on our wallets. So do yourself a favor and quit pretending that you don’t deserve a break once in a while.

Christmas doesnt come from the store, perhaps Christmas means something more..... -Dr. Seuss
ta, and snowflakes. Do people forget that Christmas is a month away? I don’t want to be eating my Thanksgiving dinner next to a Christmas tree. I don’t hate that people start preparing for Christmas way too early, even though that is annoying, its the fact that the preparation of the holiday has made us forget the true meaning of Christmas. This isn’t just a problem it’s annoying. Laugh if you want, but look around, in November most of us walk around and watch our family and friends set up their Christmas lights and trees before December 1 is even here. What is the point? You will get a few more weeks of Christmas lights, but that is all. Christmas has become focused on the Christmas lights being bright enough and if a present for a friend is the right shade of pink. When Oak Park Mall has put up their Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving is even here, we need to step back and think ‘okay has this gone too far’, but we don’t we just go on our merry way walking in a world so focused on the physical side of Christmas. The mall’s garlands are roped across the ceiling, and for yet another year they rely on December to keep them from going “bankrupt”, taking money from the innocent victims that willingly over pay for Christmas items. It’s depressing to know that department stores are now included in the definition of Christmas. All these stores have roped off large sections of their stores for the explicit use of advertising and selling Christmas lights, artificial trees and various holiday knick-knacks. These sections capture our attention and we end up walking out of the store with ten bags of unnecessary Christmas lights that will be put right when you get home, rather than just the pack of double A batteries that you originally need. It doesn’t help that most of the displays are set up early November or late October. We spend days and weeks getting ready for one day of the year, not even focusing what is really important during this time of year. The smell of fresh Christmas trees takes over the air before we can even have start preparing our Thanksgiving meals. I love Christmas, but this holiday is consuming us. Christmas is planting an infection in our hearts and minds that makes us take the holidays to a whole new level; subtracting the very meaning of this holiday from the equation completely. The infection is spreading and spreading and in a few years we will all be infected. I’m not trying to be a Scrooge but this is getting out of hand. In the beginning of November, I feel as if I am forced to get in the Christmas spirit and by the time the day is here I’m tired of the constant holiday commercials and their spirit being forced upon me. After weeks of blazing lights, hours walking around shopping and seemingly endless Christmas special marathons that replay the same movie over and over again, I am amazed at how my favorite holiday has started to annoy me. The anticipation that I have for the holiday suddenly vanishes when I remember I have over a month of prep time before I even get to celebrate. I think it’s pathetic that this holiday has become so focused on material objects. We are relying on things so fragile to make this holiday fun and exciting when being with family should be enough, but it’s not for most people. Has this society come to that? Sadly I think it has. We need to open our eyes to what Christmas is becoming and to what it will become.

o AP or not to AP that is the question. First off, in order to effectively answer that question, we need to know what an AP class is. AP, or advanced placement, is a program that provides college level education to high school students. The College Board of Education gathers a panel of experts and university educators from each subject to create the AP curriculum. The next variable in deciding if AP is worth it to you is why are you taking the course? Some students take advanced placement course because of the possibility of boosting their GPA and setting themselves apart from their classmates. The problem is that some colleges don’t look at weighted GPA’s. One college advisor put it like this, “Some colleges— many of these are state universities—do not necessarily look closely at the types of classes you took. They don’t make allowance for the fact that your AP course was tougher than a standard class would have been.” But also it needs to be noted that the advisor also said, “Some discriminating colleges do look for weighty AP courses on your transcripts, and they expect to see high grades and high exam scores to match.” For this reason the recommendation is that you look at the policy of the college you plan on attending before you take AP classes for the particular

? reason. Students who take AP classes are often times doing so because their parent are forcing them and if that’s the case then simply put don’t spend your time on your education taking classes for your parents. It just doesn’t make sense. But also another reason students may find themselves inspired to take an AP course is because a teacher or other influential adult recommends it to them, saying that they would do well at this, possibly seeing something in them that they don’t see in themselves. This is a different situation than if a parent is forcing you, take the recommendations and go ahead and push yourself. Another reason some may take an AP course would be because they want a higher level of education, they want to challenge themselves with a more difficult, college type class. The skills learned in AP classes are elevated compared to the normal classes and if you enjoy the course and it will be useful to you in the future, then it is worth taking. Not only do AP classes prepare you for college but sometime they can give you some Editorial Cartoon by Peter Hung college credit as well. In summary, AP classes are a viable choice for class if taken for the right reasons and in moderation. Overdoing yourself will end up doing more harm then good.

Tips on how to buy your family the perfect present

e women let all the men in our life know exactly what we want for the holidays, we hint and hint until eventually their non-responsive brains lift from their “Call of Duty” or football game that they have been glued to for the past three hours. Women print out pictures, cut out articles, and they practically do everything but go to the store and pick up the gift for their clueless father, boyfriend, brother, or husband. And what dowomen get in return for their many magazine clipping and coupon cutting? A simple “ I don’t want anything

honey,” or a “ I do not care what you get me this year.” What men do not realize is that women are going to buy a present for the man in their life no matter how many times they say they do not want anythimg, buying is in the genetics of a women. They were born with the urge to buy, spend, and shop. So how can a woman possibly pick out the perfect gift without an array of clues and hints? They must use their instincts, be creative, and pay attention to details. Here are some helpful hints in the stress of shopping for the male race:
Start Early-- You see, the male brain does not remember details as well as us ladies, so by asking early you have the upper hand on your man. You can hint about what he is interested in and get a few ideas throughout the early holiday season. Ask what he is intrested in and notice small details of things he mentions he wants or even comments on as being “cool” or “neat”.
Have Fun- Shopping is something women love to do and men should not take the joy out of it just because of the stress to buy him the perfect gift.
Shopping for women an easy task every year, because all you will hear, see, or maybe even smell for weeks to come are little hints of things the woman in your life want for a gift. You still don’t want to be that guy that gets the stupid present like a fanny pack, so to prevent you from a future of looking brainless the Hawks Eye is here to help you on shopping for that special woman in your life, Whether your wife, your mom, or your sister, odds are that they’re all going to be into the same thing such as clothing or jewelry, however you can’t
just wander through a store and just randomly select the first necklace you see. You have to get them something that shows them how important they are to you, so take your time when picking out the right gift. They are the woman you love, the woman who raised you, the woman that stays by your side when you’re feeling sad or steals things from your room, so come on, guys, show some affection. If you guys are truly stumped and have no idea what to get, here are a few tips to help you look like loving and caring guys:
Ask a fellow friend, or find a reliable friend of yours and theirs. Ask the friend that knows your girl really well for gift ideas.
Take note of the other clothes that they wear; just make sure you don’t get them an outfit that they already have.
Make them something; get it straight from the heart. Handmade presents are always a sentimental way to show your affection, and make the other person feel important.
Capture a moment, give them something that shows or reminds them of a fond memory the two of you have shared, like a scrapbook of some sort. Just buy a cool little binder, and design it like you used to when you were back in grade school.
Observe— Men will not come straight out and admit what they truly want. They expect their mothers, sisters, and girlfriends to just know exactly what they want, as we are in fact “all knowing” when it comes to their needs. So take a few minutes each day throughout the up coming months and observe. Be thoughtful— Do not worry about getting exactly what he asks for, instead focus on finding that special gift that will mean so much to him.
Shopping for a man can be one of the most stressful things to deal with, especially without any clues, or hints; however, if you truly love the man you are shopping for whatever you end up purchasing will mean a whole lot to him, for he loves you back. And that Christmas morning when pulls open the perfectly wrapped bow on top of the gift and discovers that it does not matter what lies under the paper, it is who is sitting next to him as he opens it, kneeling and smiling from ear to ear.
Listen, it goes without saying that they are going to drop hints of what they want so take note of that. Make sure you look around for those coupon cutouts that always somehow manage to fly right out in the open and in your face. All you need to do is take the time and hear what they are truly saying; it’s easy.
nd ki k’s an aw :M :H To om Fr ye E
Ask around— The opinion of a man’s friends and family can help tremendously with surprising him with the perfect gift. A majority of the time a man will tell his friends some of the cool things he has noticed that have came out that women of course are unaware of, such as new video games or sport equipment.

You don’t have to go above and beyond and get them some incredible gift. Just keep it simple and make sure it’s special. Or else you’ll be that kid sitting on Christmas day looking stupid wondering why he didn’t read that Hawks Eye issue. Overall when you’re shopping for women all you really need to do is do the same thing we never get acknowledged for doing: listen, so put up with all the yelling for the next couple of weeks and focus on that goofy surprised look on their face when they realize that you have actually been paying attention all this time. We are men- we just have a bad habit of multi-tasking, so this is our way of telling you to “back off, I heard you the first time”. If all else fails just get them the new IPhone; let’s be honest it’s what everyone wants this year. In all seriousness have a great time gift giving and happy holidays from all of us here at the Hawks Eye.
