ragedy and triumph filled the year of 2015. The tragedies vary from the shooting in San Bernardino to “Uptown Funk” being named the number one song of the year. We would ask our presidential candidates what they think about same sex marriage, but we don’t know which e-mail Hillary Clinton uses nowadays. Hopefully, we will learn from last year as we move forward to 2016.

The number one song by Billboard: “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronsom ft. Bruno Mars. The single hit the radios in November of 2014, but this didn’t stop every radio station from playing it well into the New Year. Nobody wanted to listen to it by February, so why number one? The catchy lyrics of Mark Ronson had the tune stuck in everybody’s heads.

How to get Away with “Murder”... ...Simply Become a Celebrity Nikki Lansford//Senior Staff Writer
T
he accusations started with one woman and turned into 55. The spotlight started to really shine on the Bill Cosby case when a joke played out in a Philadelphia club during a comedy show. On October 16, 2014, comedian Hannibal Buress performed a small bit in where he called Bill Cosby a rapist. “Yeah, but you raped women, Bill Cosby. So, brings you down a couple notches.” said Buress. The comedian would later admit that he meant no harm by the joke, but he performed those same lines for around the past six months before the joke blew up. “That wasn’t my intention, to make it a part of a big discussion. It was just something I was doing at that venue right then,” Buress said to Howard Stern during an interview. Nonetheless during this particular show he chose to use the bit, which he ran with for roughly two minutes. The audience laughed along appropriately and then the show went on. And the story would have stopped there, except for the fact that a video showed up online of the short segment and those small two minutes proceeded to go viral. Next came the voices behind it all. Andrea Constand, who met Cosby through being a director of operations for a women’s basketball team at Temple, accused Cosby of sexually assaulting her back in 2004. But her case never went to court because the suit was settled behind closed doors for an undisclosed amount of money. Then in 2006 came Barbara Bowman, the woman who first publicly accused Cosby of any sexual assault, but nothing was done about her story. Her complaints were never taken seriously. But once the video stirred controversy she was prompted to write, “Bill Cosby raped me. Why did it take 30 years for people to believe my story?” The Washington Post put her writings online stirring up the media’s outrage even more. As the video started to create an exuberant amount of debate, more women such as Janice Dickson, Joyce Emmons, Cindra Ladd, and eventually 51 others came out with their stories. Most of their accounts as to what happened followed a story of them being drugged then taken advantage of. Yet again though nothing was done to prosecute against Cosby. In fact it took

for over 50 women to come forward with their stories for Cosby to be charged with anything. On December 30, 2015, the actor was charged for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand from 2004. This still did not put Bill Cosby in jail though. He walks as a free man after posting his $1 million bail. And many across the nation harbored ill will after hearing this news, for it now seemed that his charges had turned into an escaping act for him. Up to this point no real effects have taken place in Cosby’s life when it comes to the justice system. He lost television deals and his reputation but no court affects him. And Cosby is not a minority in this fact when it comes to celebrity crimes. For instance, singer Justin Bieber escaped charges for vandalizing his neighbor’s house by completing anger management and paying off the damages back in 2014. He caused thousands of dollars in damages yet faced what many deemed as little to no punishment. With his net worth topping the charts at $200 million, paying an $80,000 fine for a major crime caused many people to deem his punishment as unfair, especially since that is not the only criminal offense committed by him. Since his celebrity rising, Bieber has committed an ample amount of offenses. Though most fall under minor crimes, that does not exclude the fact that many have occurred. Yet it seems that his money has gotten him out of most of them. And there are a many more cases of situations such as his. Celebrities such as Chris Brown have gotten away with assault, while Khloe Kardashian got away with a DUI. There is what many deem a non-vocalized bias in our crime system when it comes to celebrities. And Cosby’s case is no exception. Many factors come into play with his scenario. In Bill Cosby’s life money and good PR helped his situation. Most could not post a bail as high as $1 million to get out of their messes. In fact there have
been many cases where someone with a lower class income actually takes a plea bargain in exchange for being let out of jail faster, even if they are innocent. But if they choose to fight their case then many turn to bail bond companies. By turning to these companies they may now have the opportunity to post bail, but these “criminals” rack up an exorbitant amount of debt. Which is why logically it makes sense to some stay in jail instead of being in loads of debt. A cruel system for making innocent people plead guilty while those on the top of the food chain run free. Not only did the money help keep Cosby secure for the time being, but his wealth allegedly helped him in other ways. Reports from an ex-NBC employee says that the actor actually paid off some of his alleged victims. With no concrete evidence to confirm this rumor, it cannot be verified. But even without the speculation of the rumor, money has seemed to help Cosby a tremendous amount. And to add to his vast wealth Cosby, among most celebrities, has a team to back him up whose job is to make the television star look good. He has been painted as a heavenly father figure for most people’s lives making it hard to believe someone as “innocent” in his appearance can be so cruel. Though many adoring fans forget that the person he played on television is just a character. Even his social media is likely marked up with things his PR told him to say, not his actual own words. People must decide for themselves if they believe if Cosby is guilty or not. Though no matter the truth behind what happened, it has been shown that Cosby has an unfair advantage with his power and wealth. He escaped many of his problems through power and wealth. And to this point victory over the case seems to shine on him, even though it is him versus 55 women.

Book or Movie? Reasons You Sould Read the Book First.
Margo Dulny // Staff Writer

very year some of our favorite books will make it big in theaters, and people will rush into the theaters spending good money just to watch them. Many people usually prefer reading the book rather than watching the movie. For which there are many reasons. 1. Have Your Own Imagination Watching a movie before reading the book, can take away your imagination. OE student Jeremiah Crans liked his own visual of Fault in Our Stars by John Green over the movie. On the other hand, Adri Jones, OE student, watched the movie before the book to help understand the book when they read. However, reading a book with someone else’s perception or imagination may not give a fuller or richer experience of the book. The school librarian Shelly McNerney said, “I prefer The Fault In Our to picture the characters and settings in my own imagination— and if I see the movie first I Stars by John have a hard time getting those images out of my Green mind.” Also, you can take the book wherever you want with your own imagination. You may not feel as much suspense with someone else’s view on the book compared to your own.
Percy Jackson:The Lighting Thief by Rick Riordan
2. You Understand the Story and Plot Line More Reading the book gives you a better understanding of the story. While non-readers watch the movie, the ones who have already read the book will have the knowledge and a sense of the plot line before watching the movie. Many times reading the book could help make sense of the movie. Any unanswered questions would also be summed up in the book. Of course, most movies are not exactly like the book. How much you flim has a limits and many things may need to change. The book is the original author’s plot.
3. Thoughts of the Characters When watching a movie, a viewer ever know exactly the characters thoughts or plans. Even in third person point of view the author is able to tell the thoughts and intentions of the character that a movie could not tell the reader. This can help having a better understanding of the characters and some of the deep dark principles about The Hunger Games any book. It can also help to by Suzanne Collins understand many important things about the movie that the movie doesn’t share.
story looks like.” OE student, Lamekia Holmes thought the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has more detail than the movie. Some people like to read the book because it includes extensive detail, and they get a better feel for the book. The book may seem more real and vivid with more details. 5. Know the Characters Better When reading a book, you learn things about the character the movie does not share. Including first person point of view, you understand the character better than the movie. Sometimes it feels as though you have a relationship with The Ring and the the characters of the books just reading about their thoughts, intentions, seeing their interests Crown by Melissa and their role of the story. de la Cruz 6. The Book Offers the Original Story Reading the original story may hold more interest to the reader. Directors will not only leave out details or important parts of the plot but they can also place events that would not have been in the original story. Seeing the author’s actual thoughts Divergent by and story shows more of the author’s ideas and Veronica Roth the way he views his or her own story rather than watching a movie of from the director’s view. “In a book those narrative sections often work seamlessly, but finding ways to add that narration in a film often feels more artificial because there isn’t an easy way to always have those thoughts articulated,” said Shelly McNerney. 7. Getting the Fuller Experiences Student of OE Anthony Bunnell thinks the tiniest details will make you feel a part of the story. Books give you a experience. Some people feel like the book Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan has The Book Thief by a fuller experience than the movie. The books Markus Zusak give an image of life in a different world. Books may get the point of the message across better than a movie could. Whether the book has a fantasy world or life lesson, the book generally gives readers a fuller experience than mindlessly watching a movie.
4. More Details A director typically has a limit of how much to film in Harry Potter any movie; books do not have a limit to how much is and the Sor- written. Down to the Wire The Race for the 2016 Presidency Intensifies as the Candidates Steal Public Eye Gavin Miller//Senior Staff Writer ith the primary caucuses approaching quickly, self proclaimed Democratic Socialist. While policy-wise the race for the 2016 presidential has proved these two candidates couldn’t be further removed from one another, their campaigns share the common claim of as eventful, entertaining and exciting as ever. With a playing field of candidates ranging from Democratic refusing Super-PAC donations from billionaires and interest groups, opting instead to collect donations from individual Socialist to extremist Right, the polarizing qualities of some of the race’s most recognizable personalities have captured supporters across the nation, or, in Trump’s case, self financthe forefront of the public consciousness as they dominate ing with the mammoth allotment of money which he has made from business affairs over his successful life. the news and media. Bernie Sanders
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has proved a force to be reckoned with, steadily climbing in the polls ever since announcing his bid - a bid which initially seemed highly unlikely. Sanders has gained much attention for identifying as a Democratic Socialist, and both criticism and praise have befallen him for taking such a bold position. Reasons to support him: Bernie Sanders’ progressive vision for America includes policies including free college tuition, clean energy, campaign reform, making Wall Street pay for the recession they caused, and marriage equality. Sanders’ supporters tout the fact that he has unwaveringly held these positions for the majority of his political career and has refused to flip-flop on issues such as LGBT rights and climate change prevention policies. Bernie Sanders also voted against the Iraq war in 2002, making him an especially unique candidate among his peers.
Hillary Clinton
After losing the presidency to Barack Obama in 2008, Clinton was appointed Secretary of State under Obama, which she has served as ever since. Spouse of former president Bill Clinton, Hillary is respected for her experience in foreign policy, and is favored by many who want to see a woman in the White House for the first time. Reasons to support her: Hillary Clinton toutes her liberal policies and positions, boosting strongly left positions on topical hot-button matters such as gun control, gay rights, and abortion. Having years of experience in politics, including First Lady and Secretary of State, Clinton is a safe bet for those who believe moderate Democratic policy is best for the nation.

Billionaire businessman, real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald J. Trump has proved the favorite of sensationalist journalism and has stolen the headlines time and time again for his bold and uncensored approach to presidential campaigning. Both loved and hated for his audacious statements and bold proposals, Trump’s credentials ride on his proven business skills and perceived power and leadership qualities. Reasons to support him: If you’re looking for a president who’s uncompromising in his stances and who refuses to let competition stand in his way, Donald Trump may be the candidate for you. Although lacking in political experience, Trump and his supporters believes him to be the only candidate capable of “Making America Great Again”.
Ted Cruz
As the caucuses approach, Texas senator Ted Cruz appears to be Trump’s only real competition. The first candidate to announce his presidential bid this election, Cruz has had his eye on the office for years now, and has an Evangelical, strictly Republican vision in mind for America. A constitutional schooler and a senator to be reckoned with, Cruz’s appeals extends mainly to American Christians the farthest right of the right wing Republicans. Reasons to support him: Cruz has a clearly stated set of values and political principles, and if elected, there seems little doubt he would do everything in his power to make these policies realities. A cunning and calculated politician to be reckoned with, Cruz is powerful, experienced and has gathered a large amount of respect and supporters for these reasons.
Marco Rubio
Consistently found trailing Trump and Cruz in the polls this election season is Marco Rubio, Florida Senator and Republican star. Often considered the “establishment” Republican, Rubio has supporters for his perceived electability, likeability and standard Republican politics. Rubio’s professional demeanor and Presidential attitude make him a favorite among the party members who want a reliable politician without the controversy of a personality such as Trump. Reasons to support him: Marco Rubio appeals to voters who feel that strong Republican leadership in the White House would benefit our country, but oppose the extreme nature of other notable candidates’ tactics. Rubio appears to be a safe vote for those who want reliable and strong governing from an experianced candidate.

Da Vinci Comes to Union Station New Exhibits Brought to Kansas City from Union Station, Nelson Atkins, and World War I Museum
Union Station
U
nion Station which attracts 1 million people per year recently opened their da Vinci Exhibit this past October that already attracted 35,000 people in 13 weeks of opening. Other popular events that occurred last year, some occurring again at Union Station, include Star Wars, Science City, Maker Faire, Cinderella, the Planetarium, the Royals Parade, and the Holiday Lights. Left handed Leonardo da Vinci invented the idea for the first armored car in 1485, scuba diving equipment, and protected his ideas by writing them backwards so people wouldn’t steal from him.w This year, Union Station celebrated its 101st year of operation since its opening in 1914. The CEO and the COO of Union Station chose the da Vinci exhibit after travelling around the world to get new ideas for exhibits. Picking a featured exhibit depends on when the current exhibit schedules to leave, and if the current exhibit can be ready by the time the old exhibit leaves. Star Wars became another big hit at the Station’s theater, playing for two more weeks. Science City, which includes themes such as Black History month, Valentine’s Day, places an emphasis on science for children between six and twelve. The Station’s Holiday Kickoff event and the Express Train in January brought 46,000 people in one weekend alone. This past year had 700,000 people in the first seven months of the 2015 season. In March, the Union Station staff worked to light the entire building blue for the preview of Cinderella. The lighting of the building itself took four to five hours. Lauren Hypse, Union Station Marketing Program Manager, said “The staff pitches in to put all hands on deck. We are a really close knit group.” The Royals Parade this past year easily proved to be one of the biggest moments for Union Station with 800,000 people who attended. Maker Faire precedes the Royals Parade for attendance ranks. 17,000 people attended in that weekend in June. Maker Faire comes back this June and is estimated to have up to 18,000 people. Union Station has events for all age groups. Free exhibits inside and outside let the public see every part of Union Station. Three permanent exhibits last for all history lovers. year. For those who like railroad stations and trains, a railroad exhibit is small commute to the Plaza. Union Station links closely to Crown Center, and to other museums such as World War I and the Nelson Atkins. The Station’s next renovation, Western Expansion, will become the biggest renovation since Union Station was re-opened in 1999. The project will estimate to take 6 months for it to open again. Easter Extravaganza is next on the list for Science City, and it will more than likely sellout said the Union Station staff. The next Exhibit will not be released yet, but it currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina. The international exhibit from Switzerland and Germany will release on Union Station’s Facebook page in 30- 60 days. Winter slows Union Station, since children are back in school and due to the cold temperatures. This past weekend said to be very popular since Science City and the Planetarium were closed for animal training. Union Station excitedly welcomes a new year to invite all people to bring their children while enjoying the views of downtown. They look forward to another record breaking year.
National World War I The National World War Museum broke their attendance records before the last five weeks of 2015. The new record of 257,830 surpassed the old record of 235,271 set in 2014. The museum closes the gap to beating its own public program attendance, and the website and social media traffic as well. “We are extremely pleased to be in a position to announce an attendance record for the second year straight,” said National World War I Museum and Memorial President and CEO Dr. Matthew Naylor. “Without question, the global community is embracing the centennial commemoration of the Great War, which is reflected in our attendance. It’s particularly fitting that the announcement comes during the week of Thanksgiving as we’re eternally thankful for each of our supporters who have helped propel this organization into the international spotlight.” This year for the second year in a row, Trip Advisor listed the World War I museum as one of the top 25 museums in the United States. World War I remains to stand as the only museum in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, or Arkansas to receive this tremendous honor. the war opened May is 1, 2015 and goes until April 10, 2016. The exhibition shows artifacts from more than 20 countries. Another recent exhibit, named the Daniel MacMorris and the Panteon De La Guerre. It stands as the largest painting in the world at 402 feet in circumference and 42 feet in height. It is not only an undertaking in the war. The Museum locates across the street from Union Station. The exhibit depicts a detailed image from times of World War I, from the trenches to the videos shown at the beginning of the exhibit. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art remains to stand as another popular attraction in Kansas City. They have 35,000 art pieces, best known for Asian Art, European and American paintings, photography, and modern sculpture. They also house a major research library and the Ford Learning Center, and the museum’s exhibitions remain free to all visitors who enjoy learning.
Nelson Atkins The Nelson Atkins Museum opened some new exhibits as well. One of the new exhibits called Through the Lens opened November 10, 2015 and ends on April 3, 2016. This exhibit depicts 60 plus photographs taken during the Civil Rights Era. Some Featured artists are Danny Lyon, Bruce Davidson, Charles Moore, James Karales, and W. Eugene Smith. On January 14, a featured exhibit will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Four speakers in partnership with the Black Archives of Mid- America will lead a conversation held at the Nelson, two of these people have experienced the recent events in Ferguson, Missouri. From December 11, 2015 to November 26, 2016 an exhibit called Make Room for Color Field is released for public viewing. Four works from Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Lee, and Jules Olitski donated by Dr. Luther Brady to the Nelson Atkins will feature at this event. The use of bright colors and abstract art displayed will be open to anyone. All three museums will continue to open to the public during the whole year. They maintain to rank at the top of Kansas City’s tourist attractions.

Saint John the Baptist, Virgin of the Rocks, and Portrait of a Young Man are also featured. • He was of the most acclaimed artists in the Renaissance as well as being one of the first Italians to use oil paints. • He loved animals, but he despised war. lathe East senior Abby Pfannenstiel began the road to her first pageant in September 2015; she had always wanted to participate in one for the experience. To prepare for the November Miss Teen Kansas Pageant, Pfannenstiel met with a trainer and veteran pageant winner: Alyssa Klinzing. Pfannenstiel and Klinzing trained weekly on the three pageant categories. With Klinzing as her mentor, she practiced for the interview portion which would be privately judged, and she also practiced her walking patterns, essential to the evening and swim wear portions. Pfannenstiel arrived at the Venue Casino hotel in Wichita and then attended a parent banquet to welcome all families to the pageant. Once the banquet ended, the contestants had a mandatory choreography rehearsal from 9 P.M. to 12:00 P.M. The first day of the pageant consisted of rehearsal, leading to the opening of the pageant where all of Abby’s family came to support her even her friends watched her from home. “My parents were there and my aunts and uncles were there, and you can watch it online and so all my friends watched it also” Pfannenstiel said, she felt very grateful for this opportunity and all of the love and support she has received. Pfannenstiel made it to the semi-finals, she then had to re-compete in the evening and swimwear categories. Although, Pfannenstiel did not place, she very much appreciated the opportunity that she was given to compete. She also made some new friends, and Pfannenstiel also acquired interview and stage skills. She discovered that pageants resemble nothing like the stereotypes mentioned. “I don’t know much about pageants only Honey Boo Boo, Toddler’s and Tiaras” said an Olathe East Junior. Pfannenstiel assured that the pageant world is completely different then the stereotypes or anything at all that people think about pageants. “It’s more than just a beauty contest” Pfannenstiel said. Outstanding, good people who do pageants, everyone who competes in like Miss America, Miss Universe has a platform or goal, a social issue that you would help and draw awareness to, if you win. “It’s a lot harder than walking across the stage and looking hot.”

“Every girl who was in that competition who wins is smart, they probably know more than the people bashing on pageants” said Pfannenstiel . She saw videos about the Miss Universe mix-up incident that occurred when the wrong winner was announced. They couldn’t have done anything to help the situation. They couldn’t crown Columbia “They can’t give the crown to the wrong girl” Pfannenstiel said. “They can’t go against what the judges said. It’s just a mistake and mistakes happen, especially on a teleprompter”. “The Miss Universe Pageant would never have been like this big of news if this didn’t happen” Pfannenstiel said. There wouldn’t have been as much discussion or involvement with the pageant as the on-screen error has drawn many not usually associated with pageants to the scene. At least Miss Columbia was able to maintain composure during the whole situation which gained her much publicity. “Bad publicity is still publicity, for the pageant as a whole and for both of those girls” Pfannenstiel said. Pfannenstiel’s piece of advice that she would be. “Definitely go for what you want to do”, Pfannenstiel said. She never thought that she would be able to be in a pageant up on stage. Photo by: Abby Pfannenstiel She is happy that she got to witness this amazing experience. “Even if you don’t walk away with the crown, you get the experience” Pfannenstiel said. Never give up on your hopes and dreams because one day your dreams will come true and you’ll find yourself doing something that you’d never thought you would even get the chance to try.

Making Magic
Ryann Smith//Staff Writer
The Olathe East Theater Department Takes on Their Biggest Show Yet The biggest show Olathe East has ever produced takes flight with Mattie Bell in the ground-breaking title role. The show airs February 4, 5, 6. A spoonful of clips on the Olathe East Theatre YouTube helps impatience go down. The dancers step in time with the beat of fast-paced songs while the crew flies scenic drops up to the highest heights. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is the only way to explain this jolly holiday with and in Mary Poppins.
THE CREW
Emily Tucker, one of the Backstage Managers, explains some of the backstage magic behind Mary Poppins. They throw in sneaky props, like Mary’s carpetbag, and for the first time, the flying system. “They will fix us all up with what we need and will teach us how to use it. And then we’ll have a few days to really learn how to use it .... and then [they have] show week,’”Tucker said. She helps make sure that in little time, the cast and crew put the all the pieces of the show together. Emily Lucas runs scenic flies for the set. “There are big batons that go across the stage that we hang drops on, and those are just big backgrounds for the scenes. And there’s a rope system off to the side where when you pull the ropes one way the fly will come up, and when you pull the other way they come down,” she said. While it seems simple, a complex system of counter-weights and rigging exists which the audience never sees. The fly system for people works in a similar way. Using a special harness and two sets of ropes, the actors can “fly” up and across the stage. Caroline Apel is another member of the crew and she helped build and paint the whole set. “We built an entire house that we have to move on and off. So, [I’m] glad I don’t have to deal with it... we thought it would be such a good idea to have wallpaper patterns, so we’ve been using a lot of stencils,” she said. They use many smaller set pieces such as ten small chimneys, one large chimney attaching to the house, as well as a reversable set piece consisting of a nursery on one side and kitchen on the other. The cast works well together and never misses a beat. The crew tackles it’s mammoth task with precision and ease. This show is not one to miss.

THE CAST
As the lead, Mattie Bell memorizesd lines, songs, and dances for all but two scenes in East’s producton of Mary Poppins. “It’s very exciting... At rehearsals, there’s never a dull moment, but I love it,” she said. Seven people at callbacks tried out for the part of Mary Poppins, before Bell got the role. Both Mary and Bert are two of the fice hcaracters to fly during the show, and they feel excited to earn the oportunity to be up in the air and onstage. The flying stunt Bert performs is far different from the other characters’, however. “Bert doesn’t fly. He does this thing called the proscenium walk. The proscenium is the front edge of the stage. It’s a big arch, but it’s rectangular. He starts on the side of the arch and walks upwards, and then he’s upside down and taps on the ceiling, and ends up center stage upside down. It’s really cool. We had to get special permission to do this,” said Bell. The cast treats every rehearsal seriously and acts as professional actors would. “There’s about four big dance numbers that everyone is in. When you have all 70 people in the cast, it’s takes so much to get focused and you have to find a space for everyone, but it sounds great. The dancing looks great,” Bell said. The play differs greatly from the movie, according to Bell. While a family-friendly show, Broadway’s Mary Poppins still pulls out all the stops in way of scale and ambition. East is no different. In “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” the actors must also spell, sing, and dance through every letter. But why stop there? “Right away, we gave out these dialect packets and said ‘you better practice your lines with these’ as an expectation,” Bell said. Freshman Emma Milford joins the theatre department for her first musical as a dancer. “Everybody is super professional and they have a lot of experience in musicals and theatre ... we have a bunch of professionals doing everything: hair, makeup, costumes; everything. So, it’s pretty exciting,” Milford said. She dances in five songs, including two of the large numbers, Jolly Holiday and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

A “Quick” Tip for Staying Fit Have You Already Given Up on Your New Year’s Resolution?
Kaitlyn Shacklett//Staff Writer
F
ive years ago in her Crossfit class, English teacher Jennifer Quick pondered whether or not she wanted to take part in a 30-day Paleo Diet challenge her coach at Bootcamp Fitness brought up. To join the challenge, participants turned in before and after photos and a weekly meal tracker. Each individual was judged on how his/her fitness increased and overall body composition. A majority of the class decided to try the challenge, so Quick chose to tackle it as well. The Paleo diet is a health option based on the types of foods presumed to be what early humans ate. The diet consists of nuts and seeds, certain berries, lean meats, and leafy green vegetables. Foods exempt from the diet include legumes, dairy, corn, beans, and grains. “The hardest thing for me to give up was cheese,” Quick said. After an exhausting month of eating nothing but “protein and veggies,” Quick decided to stick with the new diet for a number of reasons. She recalls her mental health as clear, focused, and more energized. The physical results of the diet were dramatic for Quick. “With the physicality of being a woman, things I had never thought of with changing the way I eat and paying attention to what I put into my body could change my overall health,” Quick said. Because of all the unhealthy foods teenagers eat in today, Quick worries that they don’t know how many harmful foods they consume. Even she wishes she could have known the dramatic difference natural foods have on someone’s body compared to processed foods. “I highly recommend the Paleo Diet to all high schoolers as an option of living a healthier life. If any student is interested in the Paleo Diet, the internet supplies a wide variety of information to get them started,” Quick said. Making an early impact on a person’s overall health in high school is very important to Quick. If she knew how to eat healthy as a teenager instead of eating pizza on Friday nights, the transition into the Paleo Diet would have been easier.
Paleo Diet Basics: What to Eat:
-Lean Meats -Seafood -Berries (Blue, Black, Raspberry) -Leafy Green Vegetables -Eggs -Nuts & Seeds (No Peanuts) -Healthy Oils (Olive, Walnut, Coconut)
14
Avoid/Limit: -Grains & Cereal
-Refined, Processed Foods (hotdogs, chips, etc.) -Refined Sugar & Candy -Legumes -Dairy -Soda & Fruit Juices -Alcohol
Olathe East Hawk’s Eye
“Teenagers use the excuse of a high metabolism to eat unhealthy, but eating healthy carbohydrates such as in sweet potatoes rather than in processed foods is a huge difference in getting the carbs your body needs,” Quick said. Although Quick fully engages herself in the Paleo diet, her family resists the diet. Her 16-year-old son, Harrison, pursued the diet for a while, but he now has more independence when it comes to choosing what he eats as a sophomore in high school. Quick’s younger daughter Adelle accepts the diet a little more, but the restrictiveness of foods challenges her as well. Quick and her Paleo Diet are supported by the entire Crossfit community because many people in Crossfit also participate in the diet. “In the Crossfit world, Paleo is kind of a cult because we are a group of people doing the same workouts and eating the same way. We all see what our bodies are intended to do,” Quick said. Quick joined a Crossfit gym in Shawnee about six years ago because she saw people doing Crossfit and believed she could as well after she passed a test to join the class. After practicing double-unders with a jump rope for hours in her driveway, Quick passed the test and was admitted into the Crossfit class. “I love Crossfit for three reasons: One, the workouts are always changing; Two, you compete against yourself and not others; Three, it’s high intensity workouts for a short amount of time,” Quick said. At her 42-year-old perspective, Quick wishes she was informed of how to stay in shape with exercise and therefore advocates Crossfit to any teenager with the willingness to try it. Crossfit Olathe offers many conditioning opportunities for teenagers at lower rates. She adds that no matter a person’s physical ability, Crossfit challenges everyone. “I am the most uncoordinated person you’ll ever meet, but Crossfit is only about me getting better at certain skills,” Quick said. Quick advises that if a teenager tries a new diet or exercise, they should always allow a friend to accompany them into challenging themselves as well. “Support is key especially when you make health changes,” Quick said.
Other Popular Diets:
-DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension): Eat more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods. Cut back on foods high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans fats. -Mediterranean Diet: Eating priamarily plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. -MIND Diet: Combination of DASH and Mediterranean diets that zeroes in on foods that affect brain health.

Between The Sticks The Rise of Olathe East’s Recreational Soccer Teams
W
hile Olathe East’s official soccer season ended in the fall, the sport stays alive and well – not in our halls but on recreational courts around the area. Though not the first time that students from East have played on recreational sporting teams, there seems to be more involvement than ever. Four recreational soccer teams made mostly of senior boys currently exist: Deez Nutmegz FC, Wall Bangerz FC, Boomsquad, and Treble Makers FC. They compete with each other and other teams in “Friday Night” leagues where the light-hearted competition draws in friends and family to support.
L
ast year, Caucasian Invasion with a Couple of Asians, a team also made of senior boys, represented East on “rec” soccer fields by They inspired the Wall Bangerz FC founders Mitch Walden, Scott Johns, and Brandon Murray to start their own team - which began this season’s competition. “We talked to some of our buddies, our buddies talked to some of their buddies, and we decided ‘let’s do this!’ and anybody who wanted to pay enough got to play,” said senior Walden. As the Wall Bangerz’ team size grew and grew, eventually some boys broke off to start their own teams - and a little friendly competition. Alden Vogel from Deez Nutmegz said, “Braden [Fain] and I decided to start a new team and split off so we could play against the Wall Bangerz. We even beat them in the league; they got third place and we got first. The championship was pretty close though: five four.” Once one team, Wall Bangerz FC splintered into three with creation of Deez Nutmegz and Boomsquad FC. “Last year [Wall Bangerz] were one of the only senior teams, and there were just so many people who wanted to play that we had to split into two,” said Corey Johns, who is now on Boomsquad FC. But the competition between teams only creates a better playing environment. Not only drawing players, the rec league’s drawing in East kids to go watch and cheer on. Mitch Walden from Wall Bangerz said, “Since it’s Friday night, everyone’s usually free. There’s a group of our friends who come every time. When we play big teams like Nutmegz and such we get a lot more people, and some parents come up, too.” As the crowd of peers get bigger and the noise grows, the energy changes and the officials know to be prepared. “You don’t have to be super good to play, so that’s what makes it really fun. And seeing a bunch of your friends play each other in a sport that doesn’t really matter… it’s fun because you don’t really care that much about if we win or lose. So as a player, it’s the most fun I’ve had playing soccer and I’ve played for 12 years,” Walden said.
16
While most of the teams started as one, the Treble Makers FC boys came up all on their own. Consisting of all East choir boys, that team plays to their own tune. Recently, they joined the same league that the other East boys play in. Eli Huber, senior and founder of the Treble Makerz, said, “With us it’s funny; I mean we’re choir and theatre kids. We go out there and embrace the fact that we’re choir and theatre kids, and it kind of irritates our opponents. They may laugh and make fun but we don’t let it bother us and we have a blast.” Although mostly made of senior players, the fate of rec soccer participation at East doesn’t look bleak. The current teams have already started new sessions for the spring and winter season, with games lined up. Beyond that, sophomore Jack Lewis already heads a team and underclassmen members of the current teams plan to continue on. Vogel said, “I’m sure that there will be other people doing it. There’s four varsity guys on Deez Nutmegz, and they’re all seniors, and we’re not playing club any more. So next year, we’ll probably get seniors who aren’t playing club soccer anymore who want to start teams and want to keep playing. So I think that’s what’s going to end up happening.”

ansas City made history last fall. The Kansas City Royals finally broke their miserable streak of not winning the World Series this past fall defeating the New York Mets 4-1 to put an exclamation point on such a historic season. Senior Henry Cannon witnessed one of the greatest World Series games ever played in Game 1 against the Mets in Kansas City. “It was indescribable.” Cannon said, “Maybe a little rainy, misty but when you walk into Kauffman and they’re handing out rally towels, you can feel the buzz around you.” Cannon said, “Eventually Escobar leading off the World Series with an inside the park home run really set the tone for the entire series.” “No matter how far we go next year everyone is going to be just as excited for the Royals 2016 season and even more excited to see things play out.” Meanwhile across the Truman Sports Complex, the Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their season to a 1-0 start against the Texans, but then dropping their next five games, four to current playoff teams, in the midst of the Royals becoming the world champions. The most noticeable losses were two at home against the Denver Broncos and the Chicago Bears; where the chiefs blew two 4th Quarter leads in horrible fashion, and are debatably the most painful losses for the Chiefs since their debacle in the AFC Wild Card game at Indianapolis in 2014. But while the Royals danced around in the middle of Citi Field, something around the Chiefs organization changed. Almost as if a new animal had been awakened inside their locker room. The Chiefs then stormed to an eleven-game winning streak, including a victory against the Texans in the Wild Card game to win their first playoff game in 22 years. Seniors Jacob Ostertag and Danny Bartak were one of the many fans to make the trip out to Arrowhead during the Chiefs miraculous streak.

@Texans 27-20
“Arrowhead is a special place.” Ostertag said. “Even on a day when the weather was terrible, the stadium wasn’t full, and we (The Chiefs) were playing the Buffalo Bills, the stadium still was electric.” Ostertag said. “If the Chiefs were to win the Super Bowl, or even come close, people would respect the team and our city a lot more, especially going along with the World Series championship.” Bartak said, “The playoff runs for both teams changed how we (as a city) actually have a chance of winning.” In the history of the National Football League and Major League Baseball, only six cities (New York, Detroit, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Francisco Bay Area, and Boston) have ever won the Super Bowl and the World Series within their seasons, and Kansas City became one of the few to come close to fame. Alex Conley was quite disappointed, along with all of Kansas City, with the result of the Chiefs game vs. the Patriots. “No one thought of them making the playoffs .” Conley said, “There’s no shame in losing to a Tom Brady team in Foxborough, the Chiefs have already shocked the country.” Not only have the Royals won the World Series and the Chiefs winning their first playoff game in 22 years, but our soccer teams have also had success in Sporting KC winning the U.S. Open Cup, and FC Kansas City winning the National Women’s Soccer League both in 2015, bringing more attention to Kansas City. The economic factor of the sports team brings not only tourism to Kansas City, but much needed revenue. An estimated $231 million was brought in for the Royals in 2015, and a 12% jump in attendance. As for the Chiefs, they have brought in an estimated $307 million in revenue. Like it or not, sports in Kansas City has began to make noise around the sports world, and the ‘big market’ cities might just have to move over.

upernatural has been airing since 2005 and has drawn in nearly two million viewers. In 2015, Charlie Bradbury and Death died. Charlie’s death was not extremely shocking to viewers. Some have a theory that the writers are bias, “They always kill female characters for no reason. Watch the panel, the main writer gets called out for it and can’t even come up with a response and all the actors just laugh,” said senior Rachel Smith. Death’s dying came as a surprise to many viewers. “The possibility he could die never entered my mind, that’s why I was so shocked. I thought he was an immortal being that existed symbiotically with life,” said Smith. “Everyone dies, but the main characters Dean and Sam have died before and have come back to life again,” said Sophmore Te’Rasya Khalifah.

R.I.P. Jon Snow
ame of Thrones has been airing since 2011 and bringing in nearly 20 million viewers. In 2015, Jon Snow dies by being repeatedly stabbed. “He’s too central to the story for that to be the end of him. I’m reading the books and his character has a lot of symbolic meaning in the story,” said Smith. Some do speculate that he will come back however. “His death made me really angry. The show writers royally screwed up his characterization when they decided he should burn his own daughter ALIVE! The entire point of his character is that he is just and he loves his daughter dearly even though he’s not good at showing emotion. It didn’t make sense and then kill him when that doesn’t even happen in the books! It was all for shock factor and not at all for plot progression,” said Smith.

Deanna Monroe
he Walking Dead first started in 2010 and has almost 17 million in total viewers. Deanna Monroe, mother of Aiden and Spencer died by being bitten by a walker (a.k.a. zombie), “I was okay with it because I didn’t like her that much I was relieved it wasn’t someone I liked. She was introduced last season and wasn’t apart of the group of characters that we love,” said freshman Jacob Meier. Overall, shows killed off many characters in 2015, ones that viewers all knew and loved. Who knows who will die or maybe even come back in 2016.

The 10 Best Films of 2015
Gavin Miller//Film Critic ast year was for many a highly anticipated year for movie going. a bit of a late bloomer. For the first half of 2015, there was a noticeable The year notably marked the returns of many beloved franchises, lack of excitement around the big releases, but as the year concluded, including the Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Mad Max brands. Award Season releases more than lived up to their potential, and the For cinephiles and mainstream viewers alike, 2015 promised delight blockbusters lived up to their excitement. Star Wars may have been the after delight from big names in the industry as well as hot releases biggest entertainment event of the year, but 2015 did not lack smaller which had been anticipated for years. While not every promise was gems either, which proved just as worth watching as the year’s most fulfilled, the year in movies proved a strong one, although more than profitable.

intimate drama, blockbuster extravaganza, and historical epics. However, the best film of the year was a 90-minute animated dramedy about the mundanity of life around us. Charlie Kaufman’s latest outing as writer and co-director may be his crowning achievement - a seemingly impossible accomplishment among a filmography which includes Being John Malkovitch, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York. Anomalisa fits snugly alongside with the movies which most profoundly capture the human experience. Ultimately boiling down to a bleak conclusive statement, this work of art features one ingenious creative decision after another as animated puppets transform into real human beings before our eyes, and the viewer is taken on an introspective, occasionally surreal journey into the depressingly mundane world around us. While questions about identity, fulfillment and purpose are posed and left to linger in our minds, what emerges is a bizarrely funny, honest, extraordinary accomplishment.

The Revenant - A tour de force of a survival film, The Revenant may be director Ale-
filmmaking with his emotionally arresting Mommy. This flawlessly acted piece consists of 140 minutes of raw emotion, depicting the domestic tension between a struggling single mother and her violent, uncontrollable son. In equal parts heart breaking and heartfelt in its focus on the relationship of a mother and son, Dolan’s best yet might be 2015’s most unshakable film.
Room - Similarly to Mommy, Room is an emotionally intense story of the mother-son relationship. One of those extraordinary movies which only come around a few times per year, Room is ceaselessly gripping and hugely powerful. The performances of Brie Larson and 9 year-old Jacob Tremblay completely make the film, and their on-screen bond proves one of the most beautiful cinematic relationships in years.
Carol - Todd Haynes returned to the camera last year to film an elegant, deeply felt lesbian romance which exquisitely captures the experience of falling in love with trance-like filmmaking and career-best work from leads Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Stylistically grounded, dramatic and intimately romantic without ever falling back on cliches, Carol tells a mesmerizing love story of a bygone era - it’s unforgettable and affecting, beautifully made and representative of a class of film which aims to elevate the medium via human storytelling and resonant meaning.

Steve Jobs - Biographical pictures, while often reverent and well-acted, often suffer from Oscar bait
syndrome -- seemingly less interested in the cinematic experience itself than in sweeping award shows. A few biopics tend to transcend these trappings annually however, and Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs (aka not the one with Ashton Kutcher) did just this, yet ironically was all-but-ignored by the Oscars after flopping at the box office. Those who saw the Aaron Sorkin-penned character study however, witnessed a subtle subversion of the expected structure and conventions of a prestige biopic. Michael Fassbender gives another layered, transformative performance, and alongside Kate Winslet, designates the film as one of the year’s most impressive acting showcases, as well as a compelling piece filmically.
9.
Brooklyn - Classical filmmaking made a compelling case for a comeback with Brooklyn, a movie with an old-fashioned earnesty rarely found in modern cinema. A topical subject-matter such as immigration easily could have warranted politically-charged sentiment, but John Crowley’s agenda here is only to tell a story, and finds the audience absorbed in an understated, beautiful narrative drenched in traditional yet irresistible storytelling and a serious approach to a moving, understated drama.

premise, and ranks among the higher echelon of 21st century horror. Done in the style of an 80’s slasher (complete with a synth score), It Follows revolves around a sexually-transmitted curse and a group of high schoolers who have to deal with their female friend’s unique, terrifying situation after sleeping with the wrong guy. A simple idea, brilliantly written to prey on intrinsic human fears and to include some topical commentary on sexual horror and paranoia, in particular, STDs.
jandro G. Iñárritu’s most technically ambitious film to date. The director, as well as lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, were put through hell making this epic film; meticulously shot with almost exclusively natural light in real locations which required the cast and crew to perform physically straining labors for their art. The gritty production pays off in every beautiful frame though, and the result is dramatically satisfying in an unconventional, rare manner which trusts the audience by leaving them with an somewhat ambiguous thematic meaning, after putting us through an unforgiving and grizzly cinematic experience of over two and a half hours.
(or maybe decade), George Miller’s fourth Mad Max entry ultimately proved one of 2015’s finest in cinema. Accurately described as a two-hour long vehicular chase scene, what elevates Fury Road above contemporaries is its jaw-droppingly artistic rendering and intricately detailed world -- as a whole, putting almost every other blockbuster offering of the year to shame. Innovating new standards with an unforgettable female lead in Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, while simultaneously reinvigorating the Mad Max series by reintroducing the character and his apocalyptic world with Tom Hardy in the title role and by upping the amazing production design, as well as choreography/stunts (with large emphasis of practical effects), Miller pulled off an action vision which must have seemed nearly unfilmable in theory.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Without a doubt the most discussed and seen movie of the
year, Star Wars Episode 7 destroyed box office records and restored the beloved franchise to its former glory, wiping the sour taste of the prequel trilogy clean from the public’s palate. Reintroducing the series’s original characters while also ushering in a new cast, The Force Awakens simultaneously succeeded as a celebration of Star Wars itself and a worthy continuation of the Original Trilogy, setting the groundwork as the first in a trilogy of new films. Fans were satisfied, the box office was burst open at its seams, and Star Wars rules the cinema once again.
