BREASTFEEDING: BEYOND THE BASICS

7-9 PM • $35 This 2-hour class involves a more in-depth review of pumping, breastmilk collection and storage. Tips for how to plan and prepare appropriate volumes of breastmilk in advance of returning to work outside the home and issues regarding weaning are addressed.

INFANT CARE
7-9:30 PM • $25 This class is for parents-to-be to learn the basics of baby care: how to hold, diaper, swaddle, care for the skin and umbilical cord, bathe a newborn, and take a temperature. Normal behaviors, signs of illness and when to call the doctor are reviewed. Standard newborn screening tests and hospital procedures are explained. Safety topics such as safe sleep practices (to reduce the risk of SIDS), car seat basics, and recognizing jaundice are addressed, as well as other common concerns.

GRANDPARENTING TODAY
9 AM - NOON • $15 Healthcare is changing every day and products and practices in childbirth and newborn care are no exception. Grandparents are frequently surprised to learn how common hospital practices are different from when their children were born. This class highlights current methods of childbirth, infant care and safety. A tour of The Birth Place is included. The fee is per couple.

CHILDBIRTH REFRESHER/VBAC
1-4 PM • $45 This abbreviated class is intended for couples when one or both parents-to-be have attended a childbirth class with a previous pregnancy. Refresh your childbirth preparation skills. Review common discomforts, warning signs in pregnancy, exercise, the labor process, signs of true labor, breathing and relaxation skills. Updates provided on medical interventions such as medications, inductions and Cesarean births. Review immediate postpartum and newborn care and tour The Birth Place.

ONE-DAY CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION
8 AM - 5 PM • $65 This class is good to take regardless of whether or not you plan to have epidural medication during labor. You will practice how to cope with common discomforts of pregnancy and labor through positioning, massage, breathing techniques, visualization, total body relaxation, and various medications are explained and practiced so you can determine which techniques work best for you. Learn how to differentiate true from false labor, what to do if your “water” breaks, warning signs that require a call to your physician, and reasons why internal fetal monitoring, induction of labor, instrumentation or cesarean birth may be necessary. The Infant Care class is included in this series as well as information on postpartum care, newborn safety, and a tour of The Birth Place.
