PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
JAMES BRADY
Over the past 8 months the Old Andreans Association has been very busy and there are still some great things to come. From reunions, to new events and the old favourites coming back, things are looking good. Last year ended with a bang with 3 enormously successful reunions. I want to extend a massive thankyou to year coordinators Gareth Stewart and Tori Ingram from class of ’06, Chris Galea from class of ’01 and finally Stephen Hayes from class of ’86 for their outstanding efforts in managing to round up Old Andreans from around the world to reunite for their respective reunions. The New Year also brought some great changes, with a brand new constitution adopted and after the AGM the OAA Council expanded to consist of 11 members. With more resources and more engagement from members this allowed the OAA to reach for even bigger things in 2012. Last month the Association hosted the Heath Centre Celebration Dinner to open level 5 SAH and fundraise for the Phillip Heath Scholarship Fund. With former Head of School Mr Phillip Heath there as guest speaker, the event was a sell out and we even managed to raise a total of $18,000 towards the fund, including the OAA’s donation. Have a look at page 9 to see some of the photos from the night. Looking forward, there are some exciting things on the radar. Events coming back again are Rugby Day, The Annual 2012, our class of ’07, ’02 and ’92 reunions and a new Christian Reunion, so make sure you take note of the details in this August edition and watch our Facebook page for more information. Otherwise I hope you enjoy the first ever printed edition of The Old Andrean and I look forward seeing you all at our upcoming events.

OLD ANDREAN SWIMMING FOR GOLD WORDS BY ALEX LYNCH
Matt Levy (class of 2005) is in London representing Australia at the Paralympic Games. This will be Matt’s third Paralympics. After regularly competing in swimming events (at School and beyond) throughout his teenage years, Matt has gone on to compete at the highest level on a world stage. Over the course of his swimming career Matt has relied upon a variety of support networks including his family, friends and St Andrew’s Cathedral School. Penny Levy, Matt’s mother, offered some comment on the role St Andrew’s played in supporting Matt, highlighting her belief that “the School community were fantastic with their support over many years, both emotionally and financially.” Unfortunately, Paralympians typically receive very little funding, and sponsorships are rare commodities. The School’s support in the early years of Matt’s career was invaluable. Matt’s family has had enormous commitments to contend with in supporting his ability to compete in a high level, competitive and demanding environment. Being legally blind, Matt has been heavily dependent on his family for support. This has included lifts to training at 4am, and again, lifts home when training ends at 7pm. Describing such intense training as a team effort, Matts family have been happy demonstrating such dedication to his dreams. Matt trains seven days a week, across a range of activities

that includes yoga, running, personal training and swimming. Generally, at least two of these activities will occur each day. Of course, Matt himself has been required to show the highest level of commitment of all those involved in his third trip to the Paralympics. By Penny’s reckoning Matt “is very aware of what is needed to be the best in the world. Over the past ten years he has worked towards being that person. This Paralympics should be his best chance of achieving this. Nerves before he leaves Australia may be a problem, but over the years Matt has learnt how to work with his emotions.” Penny also noted that the School was instrumental in helping Matt learn to juggle life’s many commitments. Matt will be competing individually in six events. These include the 50, 100 and 400 metre freestyle events, the 100 metre breaststroke, the fifty meter butterfly and the 200 metre individual medley. Matt will also compete in two relays, swimming the freestyle legs of the medley relays. The Old Andreans Association wishes Matt the best of luck at the London Paralympics. The Paralympic Games is broadcasting on ABC2 each night from 6pm-11pm from 29 August to 9 September.

RETROSPECT... 6.
THE OLD ANDREAN AUGUST 2012
The last 12 months have been huge for the OAA. With 3 Reunions in the last two months of 2011, and another reunion and event in the first half of this year, the OAA hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped since. We ended the year with three great reunions. The Class of ‘06 5 Year Reunion, The Class of ‘01 10 Year Reunion and The Class of ‘86 25 Year Reunion. Each being a great success in their own right and a great way to wind down what had been a busy busy year. Before long the OAA was back to full speed, kicking off the year with the AGM with a packed Council Room and passing the new constitution. Not long after that, it was time for The Class of ‘10 1 Year Reunion, warming up for what was undoubtedly one of the most succesful events in the OAA’s history - the ‘Heath Centre Celebration Dinner’, an event at which the extended SACS community and the Old Andreans Association raised over $18,000 for the Phillip Heath Scholarship Fund, but more on that later. In keeping with our core, the OAA has not only been supporting Old Andreans, but have also been working on strengthening our relationship with current students and staff. Providing the occasional barbeques for students on the roof, attending gala day and Carnevale, coaching and supporting school sport and attending speech night have all been ways we believe can make for a stronger community.

THE HEATH CENTRE CELEBRATION DINNER In May this year the OAA held its biggest event yet, the Heath Centre Celebration Dinner. With just under 200 people in attendance the night consisted of a formal banquet dinner to celebrate the naming and opening of the newly acquired Heath Centre, level 5 St Andrews House, as well as fundraising for the Phillip Heath Scholarship Fund. The event held in the Heath Centre and hosted by Head of School Dr John Collier and the Council of the OAA was an enormous success with a grand total of $18,000 was raised towards the fund. Celebrations also would not have been complete with out the guests of honour former Head of School Phillip Heath and his wife Alison in attendance. The night began with celebratory champagne in the foyer after that guests headed up the lift to see the new space in full swing. The Heath Centre, overlooking the Cathedral, was dressed with 20 tables laid with silk tablecloths across the room. SACS Parent Anthea Leonard decorated the space using various objects from different parts of the School. From musical instruments to scientific models, archival clothing to primary school art, the room looked incredible, reflecting the broad opportunities available at SACS. Throughout the night there was a spectacular performance from the specially formed SACS Community Choir, entertainment from the Old Andrean Jazz Combo and of course an incredible speech from guest of honour Mr Phillip Heath. The former head shared stories of old, and while some were hilarious and others caused tears, the speech gave a true reflection of the power of a SACS education in changing the lives of many.

THE CLASS OF ‘06 5 YEAR REUNION
To start off the reunions of 2011 was the class of 2006’s Five Year. Held in the Attic Bar of The Art House on Pitt Street, the event went brilliantly with the Old Andrean spirit keeping the night going into the early hours of the morning. With over 120 in attendance the Old Andreans even managed to takeover the courtyard at the bottom of the stairs! A big thank you to year coordinators Tori Ingram and Gareth Stewart for helping get everyone there on the night.

THE CLASS OF ‘01 10 YEAR REUNION
Next up was a new kind of reunion with the Class of ’01’s Ten Year being held on the renovated St Andrews House Rooftop Playground! It was a change of scene from the days of Rooftop Cricket with the eastern side being transformed into a snazzy looking cocktail lounge. With an Old Andreans Association branded light up bar, music, champagne flowing and School Captain speeches it was a Ten Year not to forget. Thanks to year coordinator Chris Galea for making contact and rounding up the year for the night.

THE CLASS OF ‘86 25 YEAR REUNION
To finish the reunions of 2011 was the class of ’86 Twenty Five Year. What an amazing turn out it was with 25 Old Andreans coming back to SAH to see how much SACS has progressed. After pre-drinks in the foyer and library, beers were in hand as a full tour of St Andrews House began. Old memories were shared, cameras were snapping and there was even an impromptu performance in the Fairfax room from world-renowned Old Andrean opera tenor Stuart Skelton. The evening finished with wine, beer a BBQ and a game of cricket on a pitch they all remembered, the Rooftop Playground. A huge thankyou to year coordinator Stephen Hayes for managing to gather up the year group, with members travelling internationally for the night.

THE CLASS OF ‘10 1 YEAR REUNION
To kick off 2012 was the Class of ‘10’s One Year, held at the famous Sweeney’s Rooftop Terrace. The closest bar to the Senior College both the rooftop and the level below were sectioned off for our newest members and with over 150 in attendance it was jam-packed. Despite the drizzle guests were dancing on the rooftop to music spun by the Private DJ line up while others made use of the bar tab on the level below. It was a fantastic night for all and a great welcome to the Association.

TREASURER’S REPORT SAM PFEIFFER
After a whirlwind 18 months full of elaborate functions, reunions, and sports days one might expect a period of consolidation for an ever expanding Association. But alas, this is rarely the case for the OAA, as this very sociable organisation heads into yet another season of grand openings, unveilings and sporting competitions. The foundation for such a dynamic, busy and vibrant council is the solid financial platform on which it stands. 2011 was a breakout year for the Association, with new leadership, new vision and new passion initiating a change in direction to a more sustainable future. Through the development of our Statement of Strategic Intent, and with the assistance of planning expertise within the school, the council now feels confident of the future economic prospects of the Association. Even in current times of elevated spending, sound foresight and caution has been taken to safeguard the impending strong financial status we currently hold. Through a succession of relatively conservative executive councils over the past decade, the association has found itself in the wonderfully fortunate position of being able to branch out. This resulted in the most events being held in a calendar year, to which all were planned as cost neutral as possible. Some events even run above cost, due to the selfless donations of you, our members.
20.
THE OLD ANDREAN AUGUST 2012
The future of the organisation solely lies with the co-operation and contributions of active members. The assistance from those who attended events, gave up their time, and spared some money is greatly appreciated by the council. It is your generosity that allows the Association to continually offer a life changing scholarship, and as a non for profit organisation, raising and saving funds for this reason is a high priority. The biggest news on the financial front is the recent support of the Phillip Heath Scholarship fund from the Association, so please keep your eyes out for OAA fundraisers supporting this worthy cause. All in all, 2011 saw a new precedent set with numerous successful events and strong donations made across the year. The continued support from members will allow many more successful years to come as the association continues to grow. Finally, the council and I would like to thank the accounts office at school for their continued support, and to all members who enthusiastically ensure a prosperous future for the OAA.

SPONSORING OUR SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN WORDS BY DOUGLAS CUNNINGHAM The Old Andrean’s Association have looked to build upon the success of its first Old Andrean’s Rugby Day late in 2011. With a number of OAA sporting activities planned for 2012 and a number of new initiatives to engage current students, the sponsorship of the rugby First XV has been one of the first steps in our engagement with current students.
After building a great relationship with the SACS Rugby Community, we now look to other sports and activities to see how we can lend a helping hand. If you have any ideas about sporting events the OAA should run or any questions feel free to contact myself, via email dcunningham@oaa.com.au or any other council members.
After approaching the current coach of the first rugby team, Dean Michniewicz, the Old Andrean’s Association committed to sponsoring the First Rugby team. This encompassed the Association providing the training jerseys for the rugby squad. After an undefeated tour of New Zealand during the Easter Holidays, the first team looks to extend their winning form into the upcoming ISA competition.

DATABASE
WORDS BY MICHAEL SLIGO So far this year, we’ve had a fair bit of growth in our database, which we have been trying to rebuild from the ground up since the beginning of last year. The 1 year reunion for the class of 2010 was a big success in this regard, as we were able to collect the contact details for a further 37 students, making the Class of 2010 our most complete year group, with 143 old students entered. We still have a very long way to go, and we need your help to complete our database of our members’ contact details. If you didn’t receive this newsletter by email, then we probably don’t have your details, or you haven’t updated them in a while. With up to date contact details, it is far easier for us to organise reunions and other events for all of you. If you think you need to add or update your contact details, just go to http://bit.ly/oaasignup and enter them into the form. Also, if you have any Old Andrean friends who you know don’t receive OAA emails, then make sure to give them the link and get them to update their details as well. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you at upcoming events.

CHRISTIAN CORNER WORDS BY MATT NOBLE
“For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see... how firm your faith in Christ is.” Colossians 2:5 These words that Paul writes to his friends in the Colossian church seem apt for members of the OAA. Christian Ministry at St. Andrews has had a meaningful impact on many former students through: lunchtime groups, Edge camps, Christian Development classes or chapel services. We may no longer be part of St. Andrews’ Christian ministry, but we can still support each other in Christian community. As Paul pointed out this community is not restrained by geography or time but rather is ongoing and far reaching.
Whatever your current church or faith standing, I’d love to hear anything that requires prayer or if you have any questions. Also, if you are currently involved in a church or university fellowship and would like to promote an outreach or fellowship event in this column let me know. We are planning a dinner for anyone who was involved in Christian ministry at SACS (open to all).
6th of September, 7:00PM SACS Rooftop
http://bit.ly/OAAchristian
If you were merely involved in Christian ministry back at SACS, are actively involved in church today or have discovered faith since leaving school you are more than welcome to be part of an Old Andeans’ Christian community.
