If this university wants to truly promote an environment where individuals can flourish and grow, they need to ensure that the students first and foremost feel protected.

But this isn’t a one-way street.

This involves cooperation from all members of the Wake Forest community — including administrators, faculty, staff, students and coaches.

We as a university and community should encourage each other and not demoralize those around us.

This reality has been fractured, not by some outside force or event, but by an individual who is tasked with mentoring and leading them: their own coach.

They described a two-faced and manipulative man who would frequently threaten the girls’ scholarships, but act friendly and charming in front of the university’s administration.

The players feel helpless since their repeated attempts to contact the administration failed to yield results.

Instead of taking the concerns of the players seriously, the administration has tried to sweep this issue permanently under the rug.

It is our hope and plea that as these young women continue to share their stories, the university will investigate and take appropriate action.

We find it repugnant that indiviudals on our campus feel “scared.�

Several current and former players on this team, some of whom have spoken out publicly, and others who have requested anonymity, have started to detail the patterns of abuse that has been taking place at the hands of coach Ken Murczek.

The Old Gold & Black has spent the past two months speaking with current and former players about Murczek’s emotional, psychological and verbal abuse.

The players and their parents shared numerous examples of cursing and threats directed at them during practice, as well as brutally harsh punishments for even the smallest mistakes.

In 1962, Carmichael played on the men’s basketball team that reached the Final Four and in 1971, he returned to teach at his alma mater.

For over four decades, he has been a constant presence in both the math department and the athletic department.

What position did you play during your time at Wake Forest University?

On the basketball team, I was a forward.

I entered as a freshman in September of 1960, and I was here until 1964.

In those days you didn’t have all of these special categories, you were either a guard, a forward or a center.

Why did you decide to return to your alma mater?

I returned to Wake Forest University in September of 1971. I actually had the notion to return to Wake to teach early on in my career.

I decided my sophomore year that I wanted to go to graduate school and during my junior or senior year, I thought it would be nice to come back.

How has Wake Forest changed since you were here as a student-athlete?

When I entered, there were approximately 1,900 undergraduate students.

There was a small law school and a medical school. There was not a graduate school of business, nor a divinity school.

The number of buildings on this campus were far less than half the number now.

As far as students go, there were far less women than men.

The women were housed in Bostwick and Johnson, and the men lived on the quad.

Another change over time was when I was a student, we had to go to chapel twice a week.

All 1,900 undergraduates gathered on the main floor together, and it was viewed as a pain by the majority of the students. In retrospect, I thought it was a really good idea because the whole student body did something together every week, and I think that is a really nice concept.

How has your view of education changed after transitioning from a student athlete to a professor?

Well, I don’t think it has really. I was always a highly motivated student who knew what I was here for.

I worked hard, studied hard and always wanted to do the best that I could do. That was true of my academics as a student and is still my view of academics.

Are you still involved in athletics at Wake Forest?

Yes, I help keep statistics at the football and men’s basketball games, which I have done since the 1980s.

It’s very enjoyable to me because I would much rather have something to do than just sit and try to watch a ballgame.

Secondly, for the past 13 years, I have been the Faculty Athletics Representative, a position in which you represent Wake Forest to the ACC and if needed, to the NCAA. In this position, I am also the leader in the determination of eligibility for student-athletes.

What is your best memory of your time at Wake Forest?

As a student, the most rewarding thing was that I was elected to the Student Honor Council three times.

In my student days, the Student Honor Council was the judicial system. Any case of academic fraud or misbehavior came before those of us on the council. Being an elected member for three years was the most meaningful happening in my time as a student at Wake Forest University.

As a faculty member, the most meaningful thing was being chair of my department for 16 years because you’re able to really make a contribution to your colleagues and to the university.

How do you spend your free time?

I enjoy exercise. A highlight of my day is to go to Reynolds Gym, where I practiced as a student. I walk and I lift weights. I always do that at midday because it is a good break and charges my brain so that I don’t get sleepy in the afternoon. I also very much enjoy singing in my church choir.

What is your favorite thing about being a Demon Deacon?

I like the fact that we are as competitive overall as anybody, and that we do it in spite of our smallness and with regard to academics furthermost in our minds. That’s what I like about Wake Forest.

Volleyball: “We tried every route, nothing happened” ͷ

Players said the coach’s strategy of intimidation extended beyond practice.

According to team members, Murczek’s constant obsession with their weight and food choices left them hungry and exhausted before and after practices and games.

“There was never enough food,” said one former player, who requested anonymity for fear of losing the remainder of her scholarship. “[Murczek] always questioned our portion sizes and would yell at us for having dessert. I feel like we’re the skinniest team in the ACC.” Some recalled asking their parents to sneak food into their hotel rooms during away games because they weren’t given enough to eat.

Murczek had the team test their body fat percentage every other week and would push players to lose weight constantly.

Players said they were also required daily to fill out a sheet detailing every meal they ate in addition to how they spent their time.

The coach punished those who ate less-than-healthy meals or spent too much time on social media rather than the gym, according to players.

Murczek said he had never heard of the time sheets. He also said the girls were fed well at every meal, and he encouraged healthy snacks, like fruit, throughout the day.

“What you put in your body is fuel,” he said. “When you put diesel in a regular engine, it doesn’t start. We have guidelines to help them make good choices and put good fuel in their body.”

According to other athletes who have been coached by Murczek, his leadership style is not unique to his time at Wake Forest.

Addason Lamb played under Murczek when he coached for the University of North Texas before coming to Wake Forest. She told the OGB Murczek used anger, fear and manipulation as a coaching strategy.

“I thought Ken [Murczek’s] behavior as a coach was normal until he left,” Lamb said. “He ruined the first two years of my college experience.”

According to Lamb, Murczek would target players he didn’t like with comments like, “You look like shit,” and “You’re the fucking reason we’re losing this game.”

Lamb also said he would feed the team very little, even in preparation for a game. Lamb’s mother, Tana, described one occasion where Murczek forced a red-shirted player to write a four-page apology letter for eating two breadsticks at Olive Garden instead of one.

“When Addason found out Ken was leaving UNT, she cried tears of joy,” Tana Lamb said. “She told me, ‘He didn’t break me. He didn’t make me quit. I love volleyball again.’”

without reason. He told the OGB all of the officials remained tight-lipped, directing him instead to Ron Wellman, the Athletic Director.

“All of the administration knew about these problems, but they said it was an athletic department thing,” he said. “It [Wake Forest] felt like a big corporation. It just all went up to Ron Wellman.”

Rue declined to comment, referring to the issue as “confidential.”

One former team member, who declined to be named for personal reasons, said the players felt hopeless in their attempts to reach out to the administration.

“We tried every route, every avenue,” she said. “We tried talking to captains, assistant coaches and the administration. Nothing helped.”

In January of 2015, Murczek was cleared of the Title IX charges. Wellman addressed the team and parents in a private meeting afterwards, expressing his faith in the coach and outlining a plan to help him improve in his coaching based on complaints from the team.

Wellman told the OGB that he’s pleased about the direction of the team and that all of the issues with the team had been addressed.

“Talking about the past isn’t going to do any good,” he said. “We’ve moved on. This year’s team is much different.”

Murczek said players are now required to write a reflection every three weeks about their experiences on the team.

“My philosophy continues to change,” Murczek said. “Our job is to

improve. The environment I’m trying to make is positive.”

But some players are saying things haven’t improved much.

“The psychological and mental abuse still happens,” one former team member said. “He still threatens scholarships. It’s kind of like he went through the motions of ‘changing’ but it wasn’t change. It was just when the administration was watching that he behaved better.”

Student Organizations Council introduced two organizations that were chartered last week: Wake for Warriors, a group that aids local veterans, and Create WFU, a creative space for students interested in all things creative, innovative and entrepreneurial.

The third bill holds senators accountable for discriminatory, inflammatory or generally unacceptable activity in online spaces.

Senators also unanimously passed Resolution #25: House Bill 2 Response, which expresses their stance against said state legislation.

The bill states that “all members of our community deserve the same protection from discrimination under state law, including those who identify as LGBTQ+.”

Jordan Monaghan, next year’s SG President, is proud that Wake Forest can “hear from us as student government that this is an inclusive community.”

An uncertain future Ciara Appelbaum quit the women’s volleyball team just one year after coming to Wake Forest. As a result, she lost her athletic scholarship.

“I just couldn’t stand to watch the administration turn a blind eye to the players’ struggles and fears about Ken [Murczek],” she said. “I don’t want him to continue this cycle at another school, even if he leaves Wake.”

She is one of three players and three assistant coaches who have quit since Murczek started coaching at Wake Forest in 2013. Only six players remain on the current team.

Murczek is now in his fourth season coaching the volleyball team. He currently has the lowest winning record of any Wake Forest volleyball coach in the past 20 years.

“If people had gone on the record earlier, including me, this might have blown up from the beginning,” Mr. Appelbaum said. “I’m doing this now to keep other girls from coming into this mess.”

After a particularly bad loss against Syracuse in Fall 2014, Murczek asked the team if they were miserable playing for him. All but one player raised their hand.

According to Appelbaum, this marked the first time the team shared their true feelings about the coach.

Speaking out was risky, she said, because Murczek would use scholarships as leverage against the players.

“He would threaten to pull scholarships all the time,” said one former upperclassman volleyball player who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “We were financially bound to the team, and none of us wanted to lose our shot.”

One team member broke the silence in 2014 when she filed a Title IX complaint against Murczek. Soon after, other players began sharing their fears and concerns about their coach with senior athletic officials. Then parents began contacting university officials to address the issue.

“For many of the families, this consumed us — it’s all we talked about for months,” said Marty Appelbaum, Ciara’s father.

Students  celebrate  Pro  Humanitate  Day Students  and  alumni  came  together  last  weekend  to  serve  the  community BY  ETHAN  LEAVITT  Contributing  Writer  leavea14@wfu.edu With a motto of “Pro Humanitate,� it’s no secret that Wake Forest students are passionate about serving others. On Saturday, April 9, hundreds of students came together to serve in the community as a part of Pro Humanitate Day. For the fourth year in a row, students have dedicated a day to supporting WinstonSalem through forming teams and serving throughout the community. This year, over 250 students participated in the event.

An addition to this year’s event was that hundreds of Wake Forest alumni throughout the country also engaged in service in their respective students. With over 100 alumni serving in Winston-Salem alone, students had the opportunity to serve alongside alumni.

Many students said they enjoyed taking a day to experience their role in the community at-large. “It was a great opportunity to put ‘Pro Humanitate’ into practice not only in the classroom but also through service,� said freshman student Karen Gusmer. “I think it was important because I think it enhanced both the humanity of the people we served and also our own humanity.�

Riley Mistrot, a freshman student, said that she “think[s] Pro Humanitate Day is a great opportunity for students to step outside the privileged environment of Wake Forest and share their talent and resources

for the betterment of the community. As a team leader, I worked with other students and alumni to help Second Harvest Food Bank prepare for its annual Empty Bowls event. PHD strengthens the bond between current students and alumni, as well as the bond between Wake Forest and the communities in which its alumni choose to serve.�

The concept of the event is to expose students to different service opportunities in the region without the long-term commitment of becoming a volunteer. The hope is that students will continue their service after their participation.

The service activities surrounded six areas: the environment, youth services, homelessness, hunger, animals and elderly care. Pro Humanitate Day has partnered with different organizations in the Winston-Salem area, including Habitat for Humanity, Seku, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, Potter’s House and the Diaper Bank.

Students served in groups of five, led by a student leader. The student leaders attended a training session to develop skills and information to encourage participants to reflect on the importance of community service.

Kathryn Webster served as the chair of the Pro Humanitate Day for the second year in a row. “I want students to take away the understanding of our privilege in the greater community,� Webster said. “On campus, we are surrounded by the Wake Forest bubble and many do not venture out into the community. We need to learn to empathize, push out of our comfort zone and learn by experience.�

Following the talk, students left to serve in the afternoon shift in locations throughout the Winston-Salem area. Although it is not a method of regularly involving oneself in service, Pro Humanitate Day is a great opportunity for anyone who is wishing to engage in the community and try out different forms of service. “Being able to see the impact that you are having on the Winston-Salem community and knowing that you are doing it with fellow students, faculty and alumni from the school really sends a powerful message about Wake Forest as a whole,� said sophomore Emily Adams. “You could tell a lot of people really care about serving the community and the food bank where I volunteered was so excited to have us there.�

Bush-Lauren discussed her experiences traveling with the United Nations Food Programme and how it inspired her to combine her passions for fashion design and fighting hunger through creating a line of conscious consumer products. Ethan Couch, the Texas teen whose lawyers used the defense of “affluenza� in his 2013 trial for intoxicated manslaughter, may now be facing a 720-day jail term. “Affluenza� is a term made up by Couch’s defense team that suggests that Couch could not be held entirely responsible for the 2013 drunken-driving crash that killed four people and left two others seriously injured. Couch is currently in a jail in Tarrant County in Texas following a December arrest in Mexico, but Wednesday’s decision comes separately from the Mexico arrest. Jail time has always been a potential condition of Couch’s sentence, and in the wake of Couch’s 19th birthday on Monday, the judge on the teen’s case ordered him to serve part of his sentence in jail.

A French couple discovered what many experts believe is an original painting by Italian master Caravaggio in their attic after opening a sealed-off portion of their attic to fix a leaky roof.

The painting, titled “Judith Beheading Holofernes,� depicts a story from the Book of Judith in which a woman beheads an Assyrian general who is beseiging her city. It is a grotesque, but prime example of Caravaggio’s work. The artist often explored grisly and violent themes in his many, often biblical works, including another version of “Judith Beheading Holofernes.�

The French government currently has an export ban on the painting which is valued at 120 million euros.

Group performs throughout community The hip-­‐hop dance crew competed in Chapel Hill earlier this month and performs frequently on campus

BY EMILY EISERT Contributing Writer eiseea14@wfu.edu Momentum Crew is a hip-hop group on campus of 30 students who pride themselves on their passion for dance and their family-like dynamic.

“Momentum is almost like a safe-haven for people who really just like dancing,” said senior and president Luke Gabriel.

The group, founded in 2005, holds tryouts every fall.

No hip-hop experience is required.

“For the most part, people have had some level of training, very rarely in hip-hop alone,” Gabriel said, who joined the group his freshman year without any prior training. “That’s what makes us so unique. We have the ability to play on everyone’s strengths and highlight them within hip-hop. It becomes a really cool hybrid dance style.”

There is a range of members’ hip-hop training and experience. Similarly, members differ in background, academic pursuits and involvement in other organizations.

According to senior Judy Hu, it is their diverse personalities that make Momentum Crew special and strengthen their strong social ties.

Hu, who is from Hangzhou, China, joined Momentum Crew her sophomore year. She later began choreographing pieces for the group. According to Hu, choreographing is her way to release energy and express her emotions through movements.

“Doing choreography got me out of my comfort zone, which I wouldn’t have expected before I joined Momentum Crew or before I came to college,” Hu said.

Anyone in the group is allowed to choreograph, according to Gabriel, who choreographs and finds inspiration from his personal life, music and YouTube dance videos. There are currently seven choreographers in Momentum Crew. Their work is pieced together to form sets, or routines, for their performances.

Momentum Crew performs at least once a month and competes in a national competition every spring semester.

“It’s a club that provides the chance to perform at a high level with the least amount of stress or drama,” Gabriel said.

From cyphers or freestyle battles on the Magnolia Quad to f lash mobs in the Pit, Momentum Crew often performs its sets at various on-campus venues. The crew also participates in events like Project Pumpkin, Wake n’ Shake and more.

Momentum Crew is involved on campus and in the Winston-Sa lem communit y. W hile members like showcasing their ta lent and grow th, their main goa l is to spread their love for dance.

“Momentum performances a lways look like a good time, like they’re a ll rea lly enjoying themselves and are happy to be there,” said junior Megan Nigro, a member of the Wa ke Forest Dance Company and Setting the Groove Tap Club. “It seems stress-free, which as a dancer, I k now that it probably isn’t.”

Earlier this semester, Momentum Crew competed in Prelude Carolinas Urban Dance Competition, a regiona l showcase in Prelude’s nationa l competition series. The event was held in Durham and featured hip-hop crews from colleges and universities throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Each crew performed a themed, six-minute set. Momentum Crew’s set had a sleepover part y theme.

“This was my fourth competition, and it was

k ind of like the culmination of a ll my years in the crew,” Gabriel, who helped choreograph the set, said. “I think just the overa ll happiness and acceptance with the whole set rea lly proved something specia l for me.”

Momentum Crew a lso performed this set at Burn It Up: Dance Showcase in Brendle Recita l Ha ll this past Sunday. Other dance groups on campus a lso performed, including R itmo Latino, Lost in Translation, Decaon Dhamaa l and Setting the Groove Tap Club.

Though Momentum Crew’s performances are frequently in ever yday venues around campus or outside, this was not the crew’s f irst time performing in a theatre.

Momentum Crew a lso took to the stage during the Wa ke Forest Dance Company’s Spring Concert last year. Members of the crew agreed that the concert was a unique experience and interpreting dif ferent hip-hop elements in a theatre setting was a cha llenge. Being out of their boundaries, they added, pushed them. According to Hu, she saw a big grow th in Momentum Crew and ca lled the experience a “specia l one.”

Model U.N. wins two awards at SRMUN At a recent conference in Charlotte, Wake Forest’s Model U.N. team took home two awards and a special recognition

BY ETHAN LEAVITT Contributing Writer leavea14@wfu.edu On Saturday, April 2, the Wake Forest Model United Nations team returned to campus from the three day Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) conference in Charlotte, N.C. They won two awards and a special recognition — a huge step forward for the club, which had not seen any activity since 2012.

Model UN is a simulation of the official United Nations, where club members (or “delegates”) attempt to resolve issues by discussing solutions to various topics. Delegates are further divided into separate committees, mirroring those represented by their countries in reality. By the end of the committee sessions, successful delegates incorporate their respective country’s recommended plans of action into “resolutions,” or final committee papers.

Over the past semester, the club has been conducting background research on their assigned countries, reinforcing their public speaking skills and rehearsing negotiation and conflict management.

In preparation for the conference, club members were

tasked with writing a position paper explaining their assigned country’s stances on certain issues defined by the committees. At conference, seven separate committees discussed 14 different issues ranging from promoting the use of microfinance for rural development to peaceful uses of outer space for sustainable development.

To be successful, delegates needed to act diplomatically to persuade other countries to adopt their agenda in order for their country’s stances to appear on the resolution.

For the duration of the three day conference, delegates were on their feet resolving conflicts and negotiating with other student-delegates from the over 34 schools that were represented. “We definitely had to put in a lot of work in learning rules of procedure, doing country research and writing our position papers,” said freshman Cameron Bainbridge, “It really paid off at the conference, where we had productive committee sessions and a fantastic conference overall.”

Wake Forest sent nine students to compete in conference, representing the member states of Turkey and Libya.

Freshman Riley Mistrot was elected to the SRMUN staff as a committee chair during the conference, taking on one of very few concrete leadership roles offered to delegates.

The entire delegation representing Turkey was not only awarded a certificate for “Best Position Papers” across all committees, but they also won the “Best Delegation” award for diplomacy and consistent hard work in one of their committees.

tions in the future as it expands its horizons to larger conferences in New York and Chicago.

Campus Garden provides space for learning Students and community members are able to access the Campus Garden

BY HEATHER HARTEL Contributing Writer harthf15@wfu.edu Just across the bustling Polo Road, a few steps away from the stresses of campus lay a quiet, lush, green haven.

The Wake Forest Campus Garden serves as a canvas for volunteers to harvest organic vegetation and to learn more about sustainable plant life. Approaching the garden, guests are greeted with a bright yellow sign to warmly welcome them into the space.

“One of my favorite things is watching someone eat something off of the ground because so few people get to see where food really comes from,” said Campus Garden intern, Akua Maat. “People are always uncomfortable at first because they don’t understand that this is real food.”

The Office of Sustainability at Wake Forest works to promote university-wide environmentally conscious initiatives to benefit both the campus community and the planet as a whole. One of these initiatives is the campus garden, where volunteers help produce organic vegetation.

Scientists widely accept the fact that greenhouse gas emissions are one of the direct causes of climate change. Relating to the Campus Garden, the Huffington Post notes, “Organic agriculture uses 45 percent less unsustainable energy than conventional agriculture. For similar reasons, organic farms produce 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional farms.”

Thus, in a small way, the garden benefits

the earth in more ways than just offering consumers an organic food option.

Maat is one of three Campus Garden interns joined biweekly with other volunteers to plant and harvest the space. Another intern, sophomore Megan Blackstock majors in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry and a minor in biology.

“As of right now, I don’t see any relation between chemistry and gardening,” Blackstock said. “I know I have a passion for chemistry and I have a separate passion for sustainability.”

While Blackstock studies in the science field, Maat is a junior, double majoring in Latin and women and gender studies. The passion for the Campus Garden is inherent and separate from their usual coursework.

However, the work cannot be carried by a small number of passionate volunteers.

The garden is large, with many plots intended for a variety of fruits and vegetables. Currently in planting season, volunteers meet twice a week to till the ground, redesign the garden and care for the growing produce.

“I wish more students volunteered,” Akua said. “I love to have people out here, its such a welcoming environment and a break from what is traditionally Wake Forest.”

The issue of volunteering may go deeper than just a lack of time or interest to spend gardening. Students on campus appear to not know about the garden or much about sustainability as a whole.

“I have never heard of the campus garden,” said freshman Hannah Preiser. “I have heard of Reynolda Gardens if that is kind of the same thing.”

Responses similar to this are very common, and for the volunteers who spend countless hours at the garden, a lack of

knowledge about sustainability on campus can be frustrating.

“I think a lot of people don’t understand that this is an organic, hand-cared for garden,” Akua said. “It is not going to look like Reynolda Gardens. Plant life is beautiful, but nature has a mind of its own and that’s how we get our food.”

Nonetheless, the Office of Sustainability is dedicated to raising awareness about the Campus Garden by holding more events for students, faculty and members of the community.

For example, earlier in the month on March 2, the Campus Garden partnered with Outdoor Pursuits to host a s’mores event. Later, on March 20, an event was held at the garden to commemorate the spring equinox and more than 70 people attended. There seems to be a relationship between increasing events held at the garden

and overall knowledge about the initiative.

“When I first came on, we were averaging maybe two to five students each gardening session,” Blackstock said. “We are now seeing an increase as we do more activities and spread awareness. When we do ‘fun’ things, we see more students come out.”

It seems that the more events held at the garden may be the best solution to a lack of awareness about the sustainable food initiative. The benefit of increased awareness about the garden is that those who volunteer have a better understanding of the advantages of organic gardening in curbing climate change.

“I wish more people knew that there are different ways to be a part of sustainability,” says Akua. “Clearly climate change is a big problem but there are so many things we can do on a smaller scale to help ameliorate this issue that is worldwide climate change.”

Trump’s comments are narcissistic, insensitive to those with special needs and demonstrative of the GOP frontrunner’s inability to display an inkling of intellectual curiosity in foreign affairs, and they cannot be ignored. College Republicans: let’s make the Republican Party great again. Let’s dump Trump!

A successful presidency mandates distinct characteristics — one of which is humility. Presidential candidates, both

Republicans must reject Trump’s harmful rhetoric because it no longer Ƥ ơ ǡ ȏǤǤǤȐ Ǥdz Republican and Democrat, are by nature, ,successful. Being commander in chief demands an impressive resume.

Yet, only one candidate craves constant reassurance of his greatness. Recently Trump stated, “I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that I’m going to think I’m a better political director than my political directors.”

The Republican Party deserves more than a carnival barker spewing braggadocios rhetoric. Republicans require a leader willing to challenge themselves and ask engaging questions, not a candidate blindly beating his chest, proclaiming supremacy on issues that he in reality knows little about. Unfortunately for sensible Republicans, Trump’s outspokenness only worsens.

Trump’s ability to insult others, especially those in oppressed and disadvantaged groups, appears to know no bound.

Trump, after bowling with voters on the campaign trail, is quoted as saying, “No, no. I have been practicing ... I bowled a 129. It’s like — it was like Special Olympics, or something.”

Those who disparage people with special needs should never lead a political party let alone head the government. Republicans must reject Trump’s harmful rhetoric because it no longer can simply be classified as offensive speech, but rather speech that incites actual violence.

Protesters threatening to block highways and demanding that Trump’s voice be silenced via heckler’s veto undoubtedly earn some share of blame for their actions.

However, Trump’s undeniably violent rhetoric is unbecoming of the party of Lincoln.

Fired up at a rally, Trump cheered, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.” Such statements, even when said in a joking manner, create an atmosphere where resolutions are most likely to be resolved with aggressive means.

Trump’s oratory and its ability to influence protestors and supporters must be disavowed. Republicans should not support a candidate inflaming the worst elements of the American voter.

The world is on fire, and the GOP needs a standard barrier who can extinguish the flames.

As civil war rages in Syria, Vladimir Putin expands his sphere of influence in Eastern Europe and as the newly enriched Iranians launch ballistic missiles, Trump likens foreign policy to a real estate deal.

After declaring his administration would renegotiate our relationship with Europe through NATO, Trump gaffed, “There’s a lot of — I don’t know what the term is in Austrian — wheeling and dealing.”

There is no such thing as Austrian. Austrians speak German. If Trump doesn’t know basic facts about Europe, how can we expect him to adequately size up threats in parts of the world that few Americans know exist?

These are serious times, and we need a leader with serious foreign policy credentials and the proper temperate to win this November.

Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Paul Ryan must represent the Republican Party on Election Day. These statesmen have demonstrated the proper tone and inquisitiveness to be our commander in chief. College Republicans, we are better than this.

It is time to dump Trump.

After the horrendous financial crisis of 2008 that ravaged our country’s economy and continues to affect tens of thousands of families today, Americans have begun to think twice about the reliability of the nation’s big banks.

One of the most outspoken critics of them is, of course, Mr. Bernie Sanders. He has repeatedly pronounced that “the business model of Wall Street is fraud,” and that we must break up the big banks so as not to prolong a culture of deception and corruption.

There aren’t many people who would seriously argue that the nation’s financial sector is completely fine exactly the way it is now — the crisis of 2008 certainly debunked that myth if there was not already enough evidence to dismiss it.

ultimate bursting of the housing bubble, but [...] the big banks Ǥdz But while Mr. Sanders’ proposals might seem attractive on the surface, they are nothing more than a pithy bumper sticker for his waning campaign that is well on its way to a screeching halt.

One reason why breaking up the big banks might be a mistake is that the conventional wisdom about how the financial crisis came to pass is on the whole pretty inaccurate.

Most Americans understand that predatory lending caused the ultimate bursting of the housing bubble, but what many of them do not know is that the big banks did not actually take part in much of that lending.

As the renowned economist Paul Krugman writes, “Predatory lending was largely carried out by smaller, non-Wall Street institutions like Countrywide Financial; the crisis itself was centered not on big banks but on “shadow banks” like Lehman Brothers that weren’t necessarily that big.”

Any student of policy recognizes that before we can even begin to move forward with reform, we must first dissect why it is that we

failed in the first place, and it appears that such collective national understanding as of now does not exist.

Furthermore, while breaking up the big banks might seem like a tactic that would hit the financial elites the hardest, it might actually be the average American who would suffer the most.

As Aaron Klein, one of the key architects of the Dodd-Frank Act, has remarked, breaking up the big banks would inevitably lead to millions of Americans having to switch banks once the larger ones had to drop customers in order to conform to the size limits.

That might not seem like a significant issue, but Klein further notes that such a switch “would impose both a one-time transition cost on millions of account holders and many would also incur more in ongoing fees and expenses that result from having access to smaller ATM networks, fewer convenient locations and a lack of broader services.”

In this way, breaking up the big banks would actually do as much harm to the consumers themselves rather than the large banking institutions that some of them upbraid for their troubles.

Moreover, there is not even convincing evidence that Dodd-Frank has actually failed to address the problems of the financial crisis — notwithstanding the fact that many

breakup proponents take this conclusion as a given.

Similar to our misconception concerning the cause of the crisis, Klein points out that Dodd-Frank was not explicitly designed to punish the big banks, but instead sought to address “the same core problems that break-up plans aim to achieve: to eliminate bailouts, end too-big-to-fail, increase financial stability and encourage a financial services sector that is safe, secure and works for American businesses and consumers.”

It therefore stands to reason that anyone who seriously advocates for the dissolution of the big banks must provide a decisive case for why breaking them up would truly work better than the current measures in place.

Sanders’ largely unsubstantiated rhetoric is improper, but his concern for the American middle class certainly has its place. He is quite right to highlight the fact that too many families are being left behind, and his lambasting of Wall Street elites should not be ignored.

But directionless criticism combined with sweeping rhetoric that lacks any real substance won’t get us anywhere.

The financial sector undoubtedly must be reformed, but Sanders has not yet proved to the American people that he should be the one to do it.

The job of reporters is to present the facts accurately and honestly. Of course, publications tend to swing either left or right politically, but the duty of the writer is to be as neutral as possible. Without honesty or integrity, a reputable news source is downgrading themselves to the standards of a tabloid.

For reputable publications, there is trust between the reader and the writer because people are reading these stories in order to become informed about what is happening around them.

In some cases, like in colleges, there is only one publication to turn to. If that publication often writes inaccurately, then the readership will decrease. It is essential to maintain that trust between the audience and the writer, but sometimes publications take things too far.

With the recent parody of the Boston Globe’s front page from this past Sunday, I believe the editor of the newspaper did a disservice to the audience.

While I am not saying I support Donald Trump in any way, there is another way to denounce his campaign than to make a joke of the front page.

The front page was set to be a year from now when Trump has been elected president and the front page represents Trump’s America. Sure, it was funny, but what reputable publication makes a joke of something that should be taken seriously?

If the Boston Globe wanted to denounce Trump, there are plenty of other ways to do so without making a joke of it. In my opinion, the Boston Globe sacrificed some integrity in publishing the parody front page about Trump.

It is the duty of publications to report truth, but what the Boston Globe did was not truthful nor accurate. While it took what Trump has said and presented it in a way that could possibly happen if there was a President Trump, I do not agree with the way they handled the front page.

The Boston Globe could have done something different to show their distaste for Trump, but instead decided to share something that was not representative of the truth nor of reality.

As a journalist, it is necessary to share and relay the truth — even if we do not agree with it.

Wake Forest requires students to complete courses under divisions like humanities, literatures, fine arts, social sciences, math and natural sciences, so they will be exposed to as many fields as possible.

I have heard students who don’t know what to try so they find the easiest class available so that they can maintain or boost their GPAs. On the other hand, some students already have a sense of direction before they become members of the university, and they think being required to take divisional courses is a waste of time.

Yes, it might take extra time, but sometimes it is important to push yourself a little bit in order to become the best version of yourself. What if you find out that you

should develop classes for non-science major students to educate those students in a less professional approach.

Based on general knowledge, students can have better critical analysis. More handson experiences, programs, workshops and clubs such as gardening, cooking and woodworking are a few recommendations.

Life skills like EMT should be promoted as well.

I would like to see the University motto, Pro Humantitate, integrated into more into our curriculum instead of making a day for service or merely limited in fraternities and sororities.

When this idea is promoted through classes, every student can hear the message and feel included in Wake Forest community.

Yet, why is it that so many global economies are hitting the brakes on prioritizing green energy and sustainable agriculture?

The problem of global warming presents itself in the form of the prisoner’s dilemma in today’s economy. Should a country alter their infrastructure and find new sources of clean energy to reduce the global carbon footprint? Or should they simply continue to drill oil and clear forests to grow crops in order to increase their GDP? What motivation exists for countries to not free ride off those who are willing to move forward with sustainable practices?

In a society based on consumption, our economies must meet this demand.

Countries that chose to meet this demand by accessing our natural resources may have an advantage for now. But, it is those countries that spend this piv-

Today global economies have two options: use the natural resources provided by the planet (i.e. oil, trees, etc.) or invest in developing sustainable resources (i.e. solar, wind and water).

If we narrow the global economy down to two countries, for example the United States and Brazil, then both would benefit from switching to sustainable practices.

While perhaps initially seeing a drop in profit and an increase in costs (as a result of high fixed costs), in the long run sustainable energy would become cheaper, more widely accessible and reduce the carbon footprint.

If neither country switches their ways, then both will continue to generate economic power at high rates and remain in the top 10 most powerful economies in the world; however when the resources run out, their economies will take a large hit.

If one country switches and one does not then for the time being, the country

practicing sustainable resource use will lose capital to the country who is not.

Unfortunately, a significant decrease in the carbon footprint will also not be achieved as one country is acting solo.

It would seem the most logical solution would be for both countries to agree to switch to sustainable resource use.

Yet, like in all prisoner’s dilemmas, the temptation to cheat is too great. If our society is concerned with increasing consumption today, then each country has an incentive to keep abusing their natural resources while trying to free ride off other countries’ work in research and development.

Yet there are long-term negative effects to electing to cheat in this scenario.

Imagine Brazil chooses to keep cutting down its rainforest for the next 100 years and turning it into agricultural land. As time goes on, their carbon footprint will increase monumentally, and their soil fertility will decrease drastically from overuse.

There will come a point where the average variable costs of producing their crops will outweigh the profit they can make. Their economy will suffer great loses.

In the meantime, the U.S. government has spent their time and energy in developing sustainable farming practices and transitioning from the use of oil and coal to sun and wind. The U.S. could at this point start working to change its infrastructure, making as-

phalt roads into solar roads generating colossal amount of energy.

As well as developing huge compost plants producing nutrient rich, ecofriendly fertilizer help maintain their crops. The strides they can make in 100 years towards a cradle to cradle economy will result in long term benefits.

While Brazil hypothetically chooses to free ride off the United States dedication to research and development, now Brazil will still be in a situation where they are struggling to compete in this new green economy. It is inevitable that this is where our world is heading.

In a world based on consumption, we will run out of natural land resources to power this consumption.

It is the countries who are willing to risk economic loss right now in order to make strides in these green practices that will earn long term economic benefits.

These countries will be the ones prepared with affordable green practices, when the rest of the world is just starting to try and mimic these practices which will take a large financial investment.

So is green energy truly a prisoner’s dilemma for the world economy or simply a chance to make a profit?

Like any new product there will be the need for research and prototypes before it can sell at market price, but when natural resources aren’t an option anymore, the countries who have invested research ahead of time will be able to produce at the lowest costs and sell at the most competitive price monopolizing the system.

On April 10, 2016, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Bruce Springsteen cancelled his concert scheduled to take place at the Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. Springsteen said in a formal statement that his show’s cancellation was a sign of “solidarity” for North Carolinians whose “human rights” were violated by House Bill 2 that was signed into law March 23.

Springsteen refunded the tickets to his fans, but not without significant backlash from the local community and revenue loss.

North Carolina congressman Mark Walker said that Springsteen’s cancellation was a “bully tactic.”

“It’s disappointing he’s not following through on his commitments,” Walker said.

The media puts the spotlight on art-­‐ ists and celebrities, a spotlight that, for better or worse, sets an example of living for the youth of the world.”

Many of Springsteen’s fans from North Carolina agree with Walker’s sentiment — as this may be their final chance to see the aging star perform in the Coliseum.

The concert would have marked Springsteen’s ninth appearance in Greensboro, with previous shows achieving the 10th and 11th largest crowds in the venue’s history. Other fans, however, have taken to social media to share their support for the artist’s decision.

Overall, the Coliseum estimates a $100,000 revenue loss from Springsteen’s cancellation.

This is just one more big blow dealt to North Carolina’s economy since the legislation was passed March 23. Springsteen joins artists, such as composer Stephen Schwartz, who have recently cancelled operations in North Carolina.

Schwartz, a Tony-award winner best known for his musicals “Godspell” and “Wicked,” refuses to allow future pro-

ductions of his shows in North Carolina.

Despite the backlash caused by the show’s cancellation, I commend Springsteen on his decision to do what he believes is right and encourage artists to continue to perform actions that prove their strong convictions.

Springsteen remains consistent in his advocacy for equal rights for the LGBT community. Recently, in Dec. 2014, Springsteen joined legendary rock band U2 to perform a surprise concert in New York City on World AIDS Day to show solidarity for those battling HIV and AIDS. Springsteen’s support for the LGBT community is noted to go all the way back to a 1996 interview with The Advocate.

“Certainly tolerance and acceptance were at the forefront of my music,” Springsteen said in the interview.

Many recognize the appeals for tolerance and acceptance in Springsteen’s work.

“Bruce Springsteen is a hero and an icon because he gives voice, both through his music and his advocacy, to those who struggle against injustice and equality,” human rights campaign’s

president Chad Griffin said in a statement.

Forthcoming concerts in Greensboro include Dolly Parton, country music icon and a long-time advocate for equal rights in the LGBT community. Parton has been critical of the “judgement” of the gay community and supports gay marriage. Her show is scheduled for June 3, and I hope that Parton will take a stand similar to Springsteen’s and cancel her show in Greensboro so as to remain consistent in her support for the LGBT community.

Other artists such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Macklemore have also been outspoken supporters for equal rights in the LGBT community.

I hope that these artists too have the courage to practice what they preach and cancel shows in areas where legislation runs counter to their views.

The media puts the spotlight on artists and celebrities — a spotlight that, for better or worse — sets an example of living for the youth of the world.

I hope that artists from all ends of the political spectrum set an example of courageous behavior by standing for what they believe in, even though they may face ridicule and monetary loss.

Deacs look to return to a bowl game

͙̻͜ Ǥ The rumblings, or at least the hopes, are that Wake Forest football will return to its first bowl game since the 2011-12 season.

And why not? It is the third year under head coach Dave Clawson, who has overseen a transition to more talented and more athletic players.

It is also quarterback John Wolford’s third year in the program. With 600 pass attempts in his career, Wolford has the experience and knowledge of the playbook to be a poised quarterback.

He’s thrown 25 interceptions to 21 touchdowns in his career,

but he also has not had a lot of talent surrounding him. Wolford has been plagued by an offensive line that struggled to protect him, and particularly in his freshman year, receivers who could not consistently get open or make contested catches.

Both of those situations should improve this year, with Clawson praising the team’s work in the weight room.

A stronger offensive line should translate to one that isn’t overwhelmed as often as it used to be.

And perhaps the most exciting part about the Demon Deacon’s offense is the receivers.

Many of them showed promise last year, and displayed progress in the spring game.

That includes senior six-foot, 190 pound senior Jalen Latter, who converted to wide receiver this spring and showed off his catching ability by pulling in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Wolford with his right hand in the first quarter of Wake Forest’s spring game on April 9.

Don’t forget Chuck Wade. a sophomore receiver who caught 33 passes as freshman and showed off his speed he when turned

a four-yard pass into a 73-yard touchdown.

Both are plays that might not have been made the past two seasons.

“I think the bright spot on offense was we made some explosive plays,” Clawson said. “Whether it was the big sideline catch Scotty Washington had, [or] the long play Chucky Wade had.”

Wolford also clearly demonstrated that he is still the better passer than Kendall Hinton, who went 16-of-31 for 182 yards in the spring game.

Wolford even excelled in the spring game without his best receiver, Cortez Lewis, who led the team in receptions and yards but missed the game due to a foot injury.

“John probably played about as close to a perfect first half as you can, except for one play (an interception),” Clawson said. “I thought he played really well.”

There are also reasons why the team might not make it six wins for a bowl game, though.

͙̻͜ Ǥ The Wake Forest Demon Deacons men’s soccer team will look to build off one of the best seasons in school history this coming fall.

After winning the ACC last season and earning the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament the Deacs lost two of their best players to the MLS SuperDraft in Michael Gamble and Jack Harrison.

It will be interesting to see how these losses affect the team going forward.

On Wednesday, the ACC released the Deacs’ ACC schedule for the fall, and it will once again be an extremely difficult road for the Demon Deacons.

The ACC is one of, if not the toughest conferences in the country when it comes to soccer and repeating as ACC champions will not be easy for this group of Demon Deacons.

While the Deacs do avoid playing in-state rival North Carolina during the regular season, they will have extremely tough matches against Syracuse, Notre Dame and Boston College — teams that all finished ranked in the top fifteen at the end of last season.

The Deacs will certainly face a difficult schedule in the fall, and despite the losses of Gamble and Harrison the team is still extremely talented and will certianly be up for the task.

The Deacs have the best home field advantage in the country, and they will certainly need all the help they can get this season.

Jordan Speith collapses in Masters’ final round Despite leading for three days, Speith failed to win second straight Masters

For professionals and amateurs alike the game of golf is unfathomably frustrating, and incredibly painful. Fans are drawn to the sport because of how effortlessly the professionals do something that no one else in the world can.

They hit shots that average and casual golfers could never dream of hitting, and yet, we often forget that these professionals are susceptible to the same nerves and anxieties that we as hack golfers are.

The Masters, held each April in Augusta, Ga. is the most important and most recognized golf tournament in the world.

Its prize, a green jacket, is the crown jewel of the golfing world and the most recognizable trophy in all of sports.

It is the prize that every professional golfer desires to win, and shapes their career after, and the prize that will elude nearly every professional golfer — even some of the great ones. The beauty of the Augusta fairways and greens often masks the pain that this course inflicts on a weekly basis.

However this year, the pain was so obvious, so apparent, that even the average golf fan couldn’t help but cringe as the Mas-

ters conquered yet another golfers chance at history. Twenty-two-year-old Jordan Speith, the defending champion and former number one player in the world, found himself with a five stroke lead as he made the turn to the back nine on Sunday at the Masters.

It seemed clear that the champion of the tournament had been decided and that Speith was going to run away with the tournament for the second consecutive year and become only the fourth individual to ever win back to back Masters championships.

However, nothing in golf is ever certain, and Jordan Speith found this out in the most heartbreaking of fashions.

As Speith stood over his tee shot on the par-three 12th hole, he still maintained a two stroke lead over Danny Willett.

By the time he completed the hole, about 10 minutes later, Speith found himself trailing Willett by three strokes.

In one of the most shocking collapses in the history of golf, Jordan Speith choked away a five-stroke lead in a matter of 35 minutes, and three holes.

Professional golfers and analysts alike were speechless about what had occurred in the final round.

Speith has been a dominant force in the world of golf over the last year thanks mainly to his unbeliavanle performances under massive pressure. He seemed to be an unshakeble force.

That is why Sunday’s collapse was so shocking.

It would have been one thing for an un-

known golfer to choke away a green jacket, but for someone like Speith who has already won two Major championships to collapse in the manner he did was absolutely astounding.

Despite the loss, Speith managed to handle himself with grace and dignity after the round.

The Masters is the only sporting event in the world that requires the defending champion to present the victor with his

prize, and Speith, moments after blowing a chance at victory, had to twice place the green jacket on Willett.

It will be interesting to see how Speith responds from such an epic collapse over the next few months.

Collapses of the same magnitude of Speith’s have ruined athletes’ careers and while Speith is extremely young and seemingly mentally tough, it is impossible to judge or assume how a player will bounce back.

Football: 2016 is an important year for Deacs ͷͷ

Although Tyler Bell’s five-yard, pilemoving touchdown run was a positive.

This is a team after all that two years ago was one of the worst rushing teams in the entire FBS. Nonetheless, the program is encouraged by the improved depth of the whole team. That should help fill the holes at linebacker.

And with a home schedule of Tulane, Delaware, Syracuse, Army, Virginia, Clemson and Boston College, it is feasible for the Demon Deacons to have a winning record at BB&T Field.

One thing is for certain, though, Wake Forest fans are ready to see one of their revenue sports teams back in postseason play.

The defense, which ranked No. 38 in yards allowed in 2015, will be without two of its best players, Brandon Chubb and Hunter Williams.

Both players graduated, and the AllACC first-team Chubb will be particularly difficult to replace.

It will be interesting to see how the Deacs defense will perform after losing two of their leaders and most important players.

Additionally, while improved, the offensive line still did not show it could run block effectively in the spring game.

Collectively, Team Gold and Team Black averaged less than three yards per carry.

Cinderella stories make March Madness great It is nearly mathematically impossible to pick a perfect bracket, and yet millions of Americans try it yearly

BY BENNET BROWNLOW Contributing Writer browjb12@wfu.edu When Villanova’s Kris Jenkins sank a buzzer-beating three-point shot to defeat North Carolina in last week’s NCAA championship game, most Americans had already ripped up their brackets.

One in nine quintillion: these are reportedly the odds of correctly predicting the outcome of every game in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament — a feat also referred to as “a perfect bracket.”

Despite these astronomical odds, every March millions of people around the country and world make their predictions for who will be crowned national champion.

This year’s tournament was once again predictably unpredictable. Out of more than 12 million brackets submitted to the ESPN Tournament Challenge, no one managed to defeat those odds and predict the perfect bracket. One of the main reasons for this was Michigan State’s first-round loss to Middle Tennesse State.

“That absolutely ruined my bracket,” said sophomore Mike Dunsheath, “I think that was definitely the biggest upset of the first round.”

Dunsheath was not alone in his frustration.

According to online gambling site Bovada, more than 98 percent of brackets had chosen Michigan State to win that game and 55 percent of all brackets had them winning the entire tournament.

Upsets like these are what keep drawing back more and more people each year, says Sports Economics Professor Todd McFall.

“You play the game to get those upsets and Cinderella picks,” McFall said. “There’s no other reason.”

The so-called Cinderella picks that McFall mentioned refer to lower-ranked teams that make it further in the tournament than expected. And this year the tournament featured one of the most remarkable Cinderella stories in history in regards to a team’s seeding.

No. 10 seed Syracuse upset every team it has played, including No. 1 seed University of Virginia, on its path to the Final Four. According to ESPN, only four double-digit seeded teams in tournament history have made it to the Final Four. To put this in perspective, at the start of the tournament Las Vegas sports betting agencies had 10,0001 odds for Syracuse to win the tournament. UVA, on the other hand, was given only a 1,000-1 chance to win it all.

“What makes it exciting is games like the UVA-Syracuse one,” said junior Will Campbell. “The one-and-done, single elimination aspect of it creates so much drama for the teams and the fans. It’s just unparalleled.”

This tournament format is not often seen in high level athletic leagues like the NCAA. The four major professional sports leagues in the United States all use series style playoff set-ups where the same teams play each other a minimum of four games and maximum of seven before moving onto the next round.

Even though the odds are stacked against a winning bracket, the unique tournament format, the Cinderella picks and the passion of players and fans alike draw millions of people to March Madness every year.

As a freshman, Zalatoris made 5 Top-10 finishes and finished in the Top-25 for every event of the 2014-15 season. As a sophomore this season, Zalatoris has displayed excellence the entire year. Men’s Golf will compete in the ACC Championships beginning on April 22nd.

After that test of character, the Wake Forest baseball team defeated Davidson.

It appeared that the Deacs would be ready to face a huge three-game series against no. 12 NC State.

Unfortunately, they were swept for the first time this season, losing 11-7, 3-2 and 6-1. Had it not been for very crucial mistakes in the first game, the whole outcome of this series may have been different.

In the first game, Wake Forest totaled 11 hits and had an early 5-0 lead. Will Craig went 2-4 with a double, walk and two RBIs. He now has 43 RBIs in 25 games.

Aiello and Rodriguez also had two hits a piece for Wake Forest. Offense was not the problems with Wake Forest this game.

Of the 11 NC State runs, only three were earned. The Demon Deacon defense had a dismal five errors in the game, making it their worst defensive performance of the season.

The second game was a hard fought 3-2 loss in 10-innings. NC-State won on a walk-off after Wake Forest blew a lead in the eighth. Wake Forest had a man on second with nobody out in the 10th, but struck out and grounded out twice in a row.

The third game was one that Wake Forest would like to forget.

N.C. State pitcher, Ryan Williamson took a no-hit bid into the seventh. Craig broke up the no hitter. Stuart Fairchild then doubled, but Craig was thrown out at home on a perfect relay to the plate.

N.C. State did a good job of breaking up any potential rally Wake Forest tried to start.

The NBA playoff race came all the way down to the season’s final games on Wednesday night.

The Houston Rockets clinched the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference by virtue of crushing the Sacremento Kings.

Their reward for clinching a playoff birth will be a matchup with the record breaking Golden State Warriors.

In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons will head to Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers in the first round while the Pacers will face the Raptors in Toronto.

The Eastern Conference appears to be much more wide open than the Western Conference does, although it is definitely weaker than the Western Conference.

According to CBS Sports, the No. 1 seed Cavaliers have the greatest chance at winning the NBA title in the Eastern Conference at 11.6 percent, with the No. 8 seed Pistons having a 0.1 percent chance of taking the trophy back to Detroit.

In a weak Eastern Conference this year, it is no surprise to see these percentages as the talk of the league this year has been the Warriors and the Spurs in the Western Conference.

For the Western Conference, it seems to all be about the Warriors.

On Wednesday night the Warriors destroyed the Memphis Grizzlies to become the winningest team in NBA history.

They finished the year with 73 wins and only nine losses — accomplishing a feat that almost no one believed could ever be done.

The Warriors were dominant at home, never lost more than one game in a row and did not lose to the same team twice over the course of the season.

Every record points to them being the most dominant team in the history of the NBA. Not too far behind, the Spurs have locked down the No. 2 seed and home court for the first round.

The Thunder have the No. 3 seed and the Clippers have the No. 4 seed.

In a non playoff moment on Wedneday, the Jazz took on the Lakers in Los Angeles in Kobe Bryant’s final NBA

game. In the culmination of Bryant’s season long farwell tour, and the final game of his esteemed 20 year career Bryant went out as only he could have.

In a performance that will be remembered for ages, and that many thought he simply did not have in him, Bryant turned back the clock ten years, and scored the most points of any NBA player this season.

He played, by far, his most minutes of any game this season, took the most shots of any player in a game this year and amazingly scored 60 points in his season high.

He scored 25 in the fourth quarter to miraculously lift the Lakers to a come from behind win.

The performance was simply astonishing, what occured was unbelievable to everyone in attendance and watching at home.

The entire night was made to be a shrine towards the great career that he had in Los Angeles, but Bryant made sure every knew he wasn’t just a monument.

The game began with tributes from past and current players and coaches that had been affected by Bryant throughout the years. Every commercial break the jumbotron featured tributes to Bryant from family, friends, teammates and Hollywood stars.

The court feautured a number eight and 24 in honor of Bryant.

In regards to the playoffs, according to CBS Sports, the Golden State Warriors have the highest chance out of all teams to win the title with a 67.4 percent chance.

The Warriors are followed by the Spurs who have a 10.2 percent chance of taking the trophy home.

The playoffs will certainly be interesting, and the Warriors accomplished a feat that no one in the sports world ever thought could be accomplished, but for one final night Bryant stole the show, scored 60 points, and gave one final, amazing fairwell to every fan that has ever supported him.

Get out the red lipstick and the peep-toe heels to bring your favorite 50s fashion back to life

BY GRACE YOUNG Staff Writer youngc13@wfu.edu The 1950s saw the introduction of Christian Dior’s “New Look,” a fun and flirty style that placed an emphasis on femininity and youthfulness. The full A-line skirts and nipped waists, cropped cardigans and classic patterns of Dior’s style show a much simpler time in fashion history with looks that are still flattering for women of every shape and size today.

Thankfully, pulling together the perfect 50s-style outfit is much easier than you’d imagine. In fact, it really only requires 10 things you absolutely need — all of which are easily found online or at the right stores. All it takes is an open imagination, a bit of store savviness and this handy list to create a stunning vintage-look fit for a swing dance or summer garden party.

The Dress A white dress with black polka dots — full-skirted and halter-topped with a sweetheart neckline — is the quintessential 50s dress. It oozes the girlish charm of the 1950s woman and is worth every cent.

The Cardigan According to Lily Garnett, assistant costume designer at Rollins College’s Theatre Department, “No self-respecting 50s girl would be caught dead without a comfy cardigan to throw on when the sun goes down and the temperatures go with it.” A deep red cardigan adds an extra splash of color to the black-and-white dress in the classiest and most elegant way.

The Shoes Heels as we know them today were only just beginning to come into style in the 50s, mainly because the rationing of World War II had ended and there were more materials for higher heels. A pair of peep-toe heels bring elegance to the outfit and help round off the main body of the 50s outfit.

The Necklace Jewelery was an important part of the 1950s style, but it was never outrageous. A simple necklace, like a vintage string of red glass beads, is the perfect thing to play up the old-school class of the 50s look in a simple and easy way.

The Earrings Women in the 1950s were all about costume earrings — large, brilliantly-colored earrings that we know today as statement earrings. “A pair of quarter-sized scarlet teardrop earrings makes a smart addition to your 50s-style look,” Garnett says.

The Headband The classic picture of a 1950s girl almost always includes a cute cloth headband or bandeau head wrap. A white headscarf is adorable and so totally 50s.

Use it to push back your hair for a more practical 50s look, or bump up your ponytail in true rockabilly style.

The Foundation For women in the 1950s, the most important aspect of day-to-day makeup was the foundation. “It was considered a sin to have poorly-applied face makeup, let alone wear a powder that didn’t match your skin tone,” Garnett says.

The Eye shadow In terms of 50s eye shadow, less is definitely more. The smoky eye didn’t exist, nor did extremely bright colors. As such, if you really want to pull off the 50s look, a subtle but shimmery neutral palette is the ultimate choice.

The Eyeliner Unlike with the eye shadow, eyeliner in the 1950s was a little more dramatic, according to Garnett. Think pin-up girls and swing dancing for this one. However, you don’t necessarily need to break the bank. Most grocery stores or drug stores sell a whole array of different eyeliners for even the pickiest customer.

The Lipstick Arguably the single most important thing for making the 1950s-style outfit is bright red lipstick — an absolute must. No 50s-esque outfit is complete without the lipstick — only because it’s fun and fierce.

Now that you know exactly what you need to create your vintage look, go and impress all your friends — or maybe that special someone — with your flirty, flouncy “new” style. Don’t forget to channel your inner Marilyn Monroe for an extra bit of confidence.

Indie artists perform at Krankies Venue hosts performances by bands Ships in the Night, Mauve Angeles and Miracles

ing the show, Mauve Angeles even went so far as to leave his position up on the stage and join his fans gathered at the front of the platform.

He held the mic out to specific audience members and joined in their dancing, making for a show that felt communal and involved everyone present.

For those interested in another opportunity to see Mauve Angeles live, he will be performing at Single Brothers Bar on April 17 as part of Winston-Salem’s own music festival, Phuzz Phest.

The final act for Krankies that evening was Miracles, a Raleigh-based band that readily claims their dad-rock-with-a-saxophone aesthetic.

Bringing a lighter, synth rock feel to shows across the Southeast, the three men of Miracles impressed this evening’s Krankies audience with their sincerity and

wit. They readily engaged in easy, genuine on-stage banter both with one another and those in the crowd.

This sense of humor and honesty carried over into their music as well, lyrically establishing a lighthearted touch while maintaining musical integrity.

This happy-go-lucky style serves to disguise heavier subject matter. Miracles’ debut EP “PrismBrain,” and thus much of their live performance, explores a band member’s account of the end of a marriage and the dynamics it produced, including a 3-year-old son. Balancing what could easily become serious lyrics with a cheerful, synth rock style suggests an attitude of optimism.

This outlook becomes even more apparent when interacting with the band members themselves; they are passionate about their music, their audience and their lives.

On April 2, Krankies Coffee hosted three musical acts in their warehouse-turnedcafé space in downtown Winston-Salem.

First up was Ships in the Night, the moniker of Alethea Leventhal.

Her voice floating over the crowd gathered, the Virginia native treated her audience to a set of dark, ambient electronic vibes. The brooding quality of her music paired with her haunting, ethereal voice could not be more different than the sweet, smiling young woman that thanks her audience between each song; it is apparent that, when performing, Leventhal is in her element as she rustles her hair and leans into each breathless tone.

Most of her performance consisted of songs from her eponymous EP “Ships in the Night,” which is available for streaming on Bandcamp.

BY TOMMASO MONETA Contributing Writer monet14@wfu.edu I never understood the expression “to be speechless” until I met my childhood hero, Maria Sharapova. Here is the story.

In a mystical world known as Prague, in the most magical of all locations called the St. Charles Bridge, I saw my childhood idol. She was right there, walking towards me as if I were in a dream. I enjoy believing that I can hide my emotions well, though we both know that in this instant no one would have been able to do so — to say that I was unmasked would be the understatement of the millennium. She winked at me, put her index finger on her lips and was soon lost into the crowd.

Believe me, I often have too much to say, and therefore, do not know how to keep my mouth shut. I would call myself an extrovert, and here I could say that I wasn’t.

I felt surprised; plus, I’m blind so I really had to squint in order to double check it was her. Could I really be the one to spot a celebrity? Is this happening to me out of all people?

The next day, I ventured to the O2 Arena in order to witness the stark contrast be-

tween the different parts of Prague; there was an evident glamour tourist area, which we had been seeing on a daily basis, a residential area that was still being developed, and an unmistakable urban void.

After this long but pleasant trek, I see the arena towering in front of me, and the thousands of excited people already gathering to witness the FedEx Cup Tennis Championships. Russia was playing the Czech Republic therefore, the locals where in turmoil. I soak up as much of the atmosphere as possible by trying to see every single stand available, before I realize that I still had to find a vendor in order to buy a ticket.

Well, the gentleman or woman I am looking for, is no official retailer; rather, he or she had bought a ticket years ago when the prices were still low, and they are outside the stadium on this day trying to make a profit from it.

Sadly, it must have been too late because everyone had almost disappeared within the arena. I decide that there is no better place to watch a game than on TV, so I decide to head back to the hotel.

I circle around the arena wanting to see all of it, at least before I leave. I turn the last corner and am paralyzed by what I see: a Russian motorcade. In between black town cars ornate with Russian flags, a small sized white SUV is slowly making its way towards my direction. I just manage to look up and realize that I’m next to the VIP Parking Garage before being petrified by the image before me. She was right there in the pas-

senger seat of the car. Sharapova looks in my direction, seems to think for a second, and then waves my way.

A bubbling of emotions was upon me before I even had time to react; my breaths became more frequent, my childhood memories came rushing back and I started smiling. However, I remained glue to the spot.

Had I learned how to cope with my feelings because I had lost the naïve hope that I would ever meet her? I had to do something though, I had seen Sharapova twice in a span of 24 hours.

Needless to say, I was giddier than a schoolboy on a date with his first crush. Ultimately, and I regret this decision still today, I thought a simple wave would suffice; therefore, please don’t criticize too harshly the boldest move that I’ve ever made in my life. I waved back as her car turned left, and entered the parking garage.

Volunteerism abroad never grows old Acts of service can be some of the best experiences gained from a trip abroad

BY LAURA FEIDELSON Staff Writer feidlw14@wfu.edu Each morning for about 15 minutes, we walked a mile from our small hostel to reach Helping Hands, a school for 5 and 6 year olds located in the center of Cuzco, Peru.

We walked across train tracks, up a steep hill and on a deserted dirt road through a small, impoverished village. The area was barren. Stray dogs ran along the road, and we kicked up more and more dust with each step. The road was lined with small locally run stores, or bodegas, with the same products: bottles of Coca-Cola, local chocolate candies (some spicy and some sweet) and quinoa nutrition bars.

The blatant disparity between the culture that I was suddenly thrown into and the U.S. culture was brutally obvious.

As we walked, shoeless kids with dusty faces poked their heads out of their front doors to see us walk through their neighborhood.

They looked intrigued, as we were clearly out of place. My friend, Rosey, and I headed to Helping Hands for another day of volunteering.

Rosey and I taught English at Helping Hands for about a week. The students were shy at first, since we were strangers in their classroom.

However, as the week progressed, the kids became more comfortable and their enthusiasm to learn flourished. Each day, we went through the alphabet, slowly translating each letter from Spanish to English and rewarding each student with stickers that read “¡Excelente!”

After our lesson we acted as assistant teachers to the main teacher, or “profe” as the students addressed her. In addition to giving words of encouragement, Rosey and I helped the students with their schoolwork in the broken Spanish that we knew.

Afterwards, one by one, the kids went outside and thoroughly washed their hands so they could have the snack that the school provided for them.

While they played on the chipped slide and outdated monkey-bars, Rosey and I sat on the small bench watching them and taking in the scenery around us. The lack of vegetation was surprising.

The village was dry and dusty; it could undeniably use a few heavy rainfalls. Stray dogs infested the small town, and we began to count how many we saw as we walked from our hostel to the school each day.

Mothers and young children sat outside their homes weaving vibrant colors to make shawls or alpaca wraps.

At the end of the week, the school threw a going away party for our departure. Families brought baked goods and soda as we all celebrated a week of helping and learning from each other, in more ways than simply teaching English.

The students “bounced off of the walls” from the mixture of a sugar high, lack of

school work and immense joy of being together and having a great time.

While the going away party was wonderful and provided a tight sense of community, I felt uncomfortable. Due to the fact that the school had such little resources, the party felt inappropriate.

Our walk through the rural village each day did not grow old. The population of stray dogs continued to reflect the difference in cultures from Peru and the U.S., and the students’ enthusiasm and eagerness never failed to brighten our days in Cuzco.

Concert Review | The Chainsmokers

BY HANNAH GOODWIN Staff Writer goodhl15@wfu.edu The spring concert the Student Union put on Friday, April 8, went off almost without a hitch — even with the last minute sickness of Sage the Gemini, they were able to get a DJ to stand in and keep the crowd mostly appeased.

Once the Chainsmokers duo finally came out onto stage, an incredible energy filled the room and the show began fluidly; it was like they had been with us that whole night and knew exactly what we felt like dancing to.

I have no previous experience at a DJ show and thought that watching someone stand behind a soundboard would be boring, but I was happily surprised by the interaction we were able to have with them and how comfortable it felt to dance along with everyone else.

It felt like they weren’t just working hard up there to find the perfect next song or insert the best effect on the song, as they also appeared to enjoy the music themselves and tune into what they wanted to hear.

interacting with the crowd when he wasn’t working the board.

Whether he was jumping and hitting the stage right as the song dropped or yelling, “Turn the *%#@ up!”, there didn’t seem to be any real wall or pedestal between us.

I think that any great show is made better by a performer who is present in the moment and expressing the same enthusiasm they want the audience to have. The Chainsmokers definitely brought that to the coliseum.

The Chainsmokers played a few notable remixes at the show. My personal favorite was a mash-up of their hit song “Roses (feat. ROZES)” and blink-182’s “I Miss You.” Somehow they were able to take a heart-wrenching rock song with intricate instrumentation and put it on top of dance beats to create something that was super fun to dance along with.

Another cool mash-up, reminiscent of their hit “#SELFIE,” was a clip from “All I Do is Win” when everyone obeyed the song and put their hands up, we were all standing there in anticipation of the drop, but instead we heard The Lion King’s “Circle of Life.”

They inserted that bit of humor and still satisfied us with a drop. There is a certain element of chill that The Chainsmokers brought to the stage, and their remix of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge” definitely emphasized this.

Besides the remixes, they also played their original songs from their EP Bouquet and had everyone singing along to “New York City” and “Roses (feat. ROZES).” None of the songs sounded exactly like the original recording due to their musical improvisation and feeling of the energy in the room.

As for the venue, Wake Forest only has so many options for artists to come and perform, and the LJVM coliseum was just fine for the size of the crowd.

I definitely had to put effort in to avoid getting beer spilled on me and an elbow in my ribcage, but was still able to enjoy the show.

The sound and dancing atmosphere definitely would have been more enjoyable if they had been playing outside, and I am very jealous that I won’t be at Coachella later on this month in Indio, Calif., where they will perform both weekends of the festival.

BY LAUREN DARNIS Staff Writer darnla12@wfu.edu On Tuesday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m., the Winston-Salem Symphony, conducted by Robert Moody, performed the last of three performances of their spring program.

The performance took place at the Stevens Center of the UNC School of the Arts on 4th Street in downtown Winston-Salem. The program included Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt:”Suite No. 1, op. 46, Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring”: Suite, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 2,” op. 36 in D Major.

Copland and his music are recognizably American. He was born in Brooklyn in 1900 and died in 1990. Copland gave rise to the distinctly “American” voice in 20th century classical music. Appalachian Spring evokes accurate musical images of the Appalachian mountain chain and the surrounding nature.

Grieg was a Norwegian composer known and loved for his lyricism influenced and derived from folk tunes and Romantic characteristics. “Peer Gynt:” Suite No. 1 includes four movements: “Morning” (Morgenstemning), “Ase’s Death” (Ases død), “Anitra’s Dance” (Anitras dans) and “In the Hall of the Mountain King” (I dovregubbens hall). The symphony did not perform Suite No. 2, which includes another one of Grieg’s most well-known and loved pieces, “Solveig’s Song” (Solveigs sang). “Solveig’s Song” is my most favorite part of the Peer Gynt suite, and has had lyrics put to it in Norwegian, English, Swedish and probably more languages for singing performance as well.

Beethoven was a German composer and is known being one of the most important figures in the history of Western music. His most well-known symphonies are the Fifth and Ninth, but his Symphony No. 2 demonstrates his mastering of the symphony. It was first performed in Vienna on April 5, 1803, exactly 213 years ago.

It is amazing to think how impactful music can be as well as how long some music can be enjoyed, performed and learned.

The production was beautifully organized and performed, and the orchestra and composer created a comfortable atmosphere from the beginning. Moody explained the pieces and their intent within the theme of the entire program to enhance the feeling of a genuine community.

One of the challenges that local symphony orchestras and operas face is bringing in new audiences, more importantly young audiences. What deters a potential audience member from going to the symphony or the opera is the length and the lack of understanding of how the music within the productions should have meaning and connection to the audience. When I plan to attend a symphony or opera, I take time to understand each piece so I can enjoy it fully live.

What some may question is the difference between hearing the pieces live versus on YouTube. Just as though one would attend a musical theater production on Broadway or a concert performed by J. Cole, the event is about the overall experience. The performance of this spring program delivered a unique experience to the audience.

What is so special about a symphony performance is the amount of effort and understanding of the players to communicate the experience to the audience. Sometimes it is a tune or a theme, or even a note that will evoke a new emotion or thought.

Music director Robert Moody included a surprise performance of the March No. 1 of the Pomp and Circumstance Military Marches, op. 39 by Edward Elgar, which in translation is familiar to us as “The Graduation March” and is played as the processional tune for most, if not all graduation ceremonies. This program in particular was special because of how recognizable and familiar some of the pieces were for most people.

Whether or not someone recognizes the composers or composition names, each of the works performed included famous tunes. From Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” Suite No. 1, the recognizable movement was “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” From the “Appalachian Spring” Suite it was the theme and variation on the Shaker melody

Simple Gifts (1848). A recognizable tune of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 2” can be found in the third movement scherzo.

James Boswell majoring in mathematical economics said that “[He] was surprised at the range of reactions the entire performance gave [him]. There were movements that were highly thrilling and others that were serene and everything in between. I definitely want to go back.”

It is important to get out of the Wake Forest community and explore the cultural experiences of WinstonSalem. The student rush tickets an hour before the show were $7. A community symphony is special because the musicians stay throughout multiple seasons, creating a family within the symphony and familiar faces for the audience. When I lived in Connecticut, I would visit the Hartford Symphony Orchestra at least once a month and had my favorite violinists, brass-players and cellists to observe in action.

I encourage Wake Forest students to explore the talent and culture of the Winston-Salem community and check out the upcoming productions for the WinstonSalem Symphony or the Piedmont Opera.

Does Your Hotline Ring?

Grandma isn’t the only person who still picks up the phone.

Younger generations are beginning to phase out of the texting fad.

Fast-forward 14 years and the modern lyrics would be, “Text me, chat me, if you want to talk to me in a really inefficient way.” Stroll down any street, dine at any restaurant or look at the car next to you at a red light, and I’m sure you’ll see a majority of people glued to their phone screens as they furiously text away. Although we live in a texting-obsessed era, I prefer phone calls. This, I realize, is a rarity, but here are some reasons why.

You Can’t Text and Drive Not only is texting and driving illegal, it’s also hard. A 2009 study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that “texting while driving has the highest crash risk of all cell-phone related tasks.” Although you shouldn’t dial numbers the whole car ride, using Bluetooth in your car is best. When you get sick of the same music playlists and radio commercials, call a friend to pass time in a safe way.

We’re Attracted to Sounds Think about those nervous butterflies you have when you hear your crush’s voice in the cafeteria or the hallway.

Voices say a lot. Countless studies show that voices release hormones and nerves in our brains to help us determine personality, emotional state and even attractiveness. Although we can send a million flirty texts and selfies, nothing will replace hearing someone’s voice. We can’t change our voice boxes, but knowing they influence perceptions is a good reminder to speak more.

The Harsh Light Can Disrupt Your Sleep The innovative smartphone has transformed society in many ways. We don’t realize some things yet, but one thing we do know is that it’s ruining our sleep. Smart phones emit blue light, which suppresses sleep hormones, making your brain think it’s morning. So, if you’ve had trouble falling asleep after texting in your group chat, here’s your answer. Studies have confirmed that people who have more screen exposure throughout the day have lower levels of melatonin.

Texting Makes Conversations Insincere Although it may seem faster and easier, texting is actually making communication harder. Emotions, sarcasm and tone get lost in translation because we can’t use non-verbals to convey a point. A receiver often misinterprets a sender’s intentions, even with something as simple as a period. “I’m really sarcastic and have a dry sense of humor so most people don’t interpret my texts the way I intended,” said junior Emily Strachan. “I’m big on phone calls these days … real laughing out loud is more fun.”

Texting Separates You From Reality Most people spend their time walking to class or waiting in fast food lines by scrolling through their phones or responding to texts. By looking at a phone you’re not just killing time, you’re also neglecting to pay attention to your surroundings. You have tunnel vision. You’d be surprised to realize that if you look up, you may run into an old acquaintance or even notice the blooming flowers.

Texting Is Killing Your Relationships Even if you’re with all your friends, you probably look at your phone. If I invite you to breakfast, lunch or dinner, I want to talk to you; not look at you while you text other people. We devalue the presence of the people around

Texting Lingo Is Making Us Dumb Between iPhone auto-correct and texting lingo such as: BTW, TTYL and ILYSM, we’ve forgotten how to spell. In 2009, 300 children aged 11 to 14 were given cognitive tests to see how mobile phone-use affected their literacy performance. The study, conducted by Dr. Michael Abramson, found that children who use mobile phones perform faster but with more errors. Texting may be forcing us to write faster, but it isn’t helping us write better.

Finger Arthritis Back when Blackberry’s were “in,” there was a term called “Blackberry thumb” to describe the pain in your fingers from texting. Although we’ve improved devices since the early 2000s, the smartphone’s small keyboard hasn’t changed. Doctors agree that repetitive hand use (texting) causes joint pain in wrists and fingers. A common spot for arthritis is at the base of the thumb. To prevent this excruciating pain, the best option is to limit your texting.

The Conversation Isn’t Just Between You Two The rise of technology has made just about everything public. Let’s be real: your boyfriend isn’t just dating you, he’s dating you and all of your friends. Screenshots of text messages are sent to group chats in seconds. Nothing is private with texts, but phone calls are only between you two.

You can’t capture the phone conversation in a photo, and if you can’t respect your boyfriend’s, or best friend’s privacy, the relationship probably won’t last.
