On Sept. 26 the first presidential debate between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton sparked controversy among viewers, but it also provided them with more insight as to who each of the candidates are.

Much of the media focus during the past year has been on the presidential primaries and now the general election, but the public, especially college students, should be paying attention to the debates as well.

It is important to research the candidates, but debates offer additional information to what you read online and see in campaign rallies.

Debates actually test the candidates on their beliefs on various policies and how well they understand what is going on around the country.” head-to-head — they are not fighting each other through social media platforms or advertisements on T.V. but in person, which allows for more authentic discussion.

The debate from this week showed us how Clinton and Trump interact with one another and how they handle opposition and criticism from each other.

When watching debates, really listen to what the candidates are saying and how they plan to execute these ideas and goals.

The U.S. needs a leader who will enact their policies and make changes for the better.

These debates offer the general public the chance to see how these candidates will act as president but also see what they would do as president.

Knowing who these candidates are is important, but their policies and ideas are crucial to understand when electing a president.

Students should take the time to actually listen and watch these debates before voting this November.

Many speculated as to who was acting “more presidential” and who was more prepared on the issues.

Any one person can put out a good platform and give inspiring speeches at rallies, but debates actually test the candidates on their beliefs on various policies and how well they understand what is going on around the country.

Though we believe presidential behavior is a valuable trait, what really matters are their stances on issues, their plans for the future and how to go about achieving them.

Deacon Profile: Jack Patton

Jack Patton is an architect with the RDG Planning and Design architecture firm. His firm is in charge of designing the Reynolds Gym Renovation and Transformation Project.

Reynolds Gym is reopening in three separate stages, with the first stage already underway after the opening of the Sutton Center last winter. A new fitness center and pool will open in stages towards the end of this school year and the beginning of next. On Tuesday, he spoke about the project at open forums for faculty and students.

What is your role at RDG? I am the principal in charge of our sports and recreation studio, and in my role I am fully vested day after day in collegiate recreation spaces. The collegiate environment, is just the collegiate environment, it’s different. It has a different tenor of individuals and participants.

How did you become involved in the Reynolds Gym project?

We had the opportunity to talk to Wake Forest in 2008 when the university knew it wanted to pursue long-needed improvements to the recreation center. This project was in the line of work we were passionate about, so we talked with a selection committee and were ultimately the team selected for the work.

What has been the most challenging aspect of this project?

I would say the most challenging thing has been the important and ongoing assessments Wake Forest has taken to do the right things for the campus. This is a project that has been well-vetted by the entire campus community. That chal-

lenge also speaks to the length of the project. Eight years is an atypical gestation for a building, but the reward is going to be grand.

What has been your favorite thing about being part of the design process for the new gym?

Somewhat selfishly, I really enjoy what I get to do. The most pleasurable thing for me has simply been seeing this building come about, ready to serve the community. The grand opening events will be a euphoric celebration. The whole project has been exciting, scary and complex.

How has the Reynolds Gym project differed from other projects you have worked on?

It has had a longer gestation than many. We had started some other projects at about the same time and they’ve been open for four or five years.

Another distinction is the “roommate arrangement” of all the departments that were in Reynolds Gym and the great care that the university took to figure out the best way for each of them to grow to reach the places they needed to. There is a real fostering sensibility about the campus desire to make wellness front and center. This is a growing trend, but one that is uniquely important to Wake Forest.

Another distinction is the grand transformation of Reynolds Gym. This building has a wonderful address on campus, and you can’t replace that. So, capitalizing on what is already here is pretty fun.

Also, 80 percent of students participate in intramural programs before they graduate. That’s a very admirable metric because it speaks to how students are impacted by the recreational community. Club sport participation might currently be 20 percent of students, and this rate will only grow, because the building is outfitted for their needs.

Students view the first presidential debate College Democrats andCollege Republicans reflect after the viewing parties for the debate

BY CHRIS CASWELL Print Managing Editor caswck14@wfu.edu This year’s election cycle has already been one of the most polarizing on record, and Monday’s debate, unsurprisingly did nothing to diffuse the controversy as millions of Americans, including many students at Wake Forest, tuned in to watch.

The first presidential debate, featuring Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, was the most watched on record with over 80 million viewers according to Nielson, a consumer research business.

Wake the Vote, with the support of the Pro Humanitate Institute and College Democrats, hosted a large viewing party that was open to all students, faculty and staff at the Pro Humanitate House.

The event had an impressive turnout with about 40 viewers inside the house. The rain did nothing to deter students with at least as many outside in a tent watching the debate.

Right from the opening statements, both Trump and Clinton were on the attack.

Clinton’s time in government as ineffective,

and that she contributed to the gridlock common in our political environment.

Clinton, on the other hand, often criticized his experience as a businessman, citing failed ventures and success at the expense of others such as his profit off of the housing crisis.

This election’s controversy was clear from the beginning of the viewing party with many audible reactions throughout the debate.

Trump supporters were noticeably outnumbered at the event, which was apparent by frequent laughter at Trump’s comments and noises of approval at Clinton’s.

“I believe about 78 percent of attendees expressed a preference towards Secretary Clinton, in contrast to about 11 percent expressing a preference towards Mr. Trump, and another six percent expressing a preference towards Mr. Johnson,” said senior Sebastian Ivory, president of College Democrats.

This was likely due to College Democrats involvement in the event as well as the fact that College Republicans hosted a separate event.

However, not everyone in attendance had a definite preference of candidates.

“Many people will think I am crazy for this, but I actually like them both,” said senior James Watt. “Yes, I can see the benefits of Clinton and Trump at the same time, and I consider that a great

Watt does not see himself deciding before Election Day. College Republicans also hosted a debate watch party. The event took place in one of the auditoriums in the ZSR Library. The watch party had snacks and giveaways for attendees and was also open to all students.

“The College Republicans hosted an extremely successful debate party with about 40 members in attendance,” said Joe Macy, President of the College Republicans.

“Our members enjoyed finally seeing Mr. Trump go against Secretary Clinton one

on one. It was great to hear him explain why his plans are what we need to Make America Great Again. We look forward to an even bigger turnout next week when we will get to see the next Vice President of the United States Mike Pence in action.”

Watt hopes that despite the inherent divisive nature of politics, events celebrating debates such as watch parties continue to unite others despite different political ideals.

“I think it is an important event, because it makes people passionate on the debate able to share a moment with their school, bring people together and form a sense of community, even when we all may have very different political views,” Watt said.

Students respond to the turmoil in Charlotte Many students find a need for more discussions centered around racial issues on campus following protests

BY MELISSA LIBUTTI News Editor libumd13@wfu.edu On Sept. 20, the interaction that lead to the death of Keith Lamont Scott would define the week that followed.

Fear, confusion and rage have filled television screens across America as the cries of many in Charlotte, North Carolina, rose up to be heard.

Scott, a black man from Charlotte, was shot and killed by a black police officer last Tuesday afternoon. Even with the video footage released by the state as well as iPhone video taken by Rakeyia Scott, Scott’s wife, many of the details that transpired remain unclear.

This event, the most recent of several resulting in the deaths of black Americans during interactions with police officers, has brought national media attention, however, in some ways it is different. About 80 miles outside of the Wake Forest University campus, Charlotte is a place many of our students call home.

“Many of us woke up in tears, more of us were confused and distraught, feelings that happen often yet never seem to wane,” said senior Chizoba Ukairo. “Sadly, it seemed many more students weren’t paying attention at all.”

Images of chaos and destruction and cities engulfed in flames have appeared across media outlets for the past year. A trail of deaths — those of police officers, of black and white Americans — too unsettling to count have been buried in the scorched earth of American cities.

The stories have been sensationalized, so much so that they seem almost inconceivable. The people behind these stories become part of a commercialized message that has become a polarizing force for many.

These images are on a continuous loop for some students at Wake Forest — traveling through their minds and bodies like poisonous venom. For many, it feels that the university and its student body have fallen silent or remain unaware of the issues of race and unity among all.

The Charlotte Police Department formed a barrier prior to the start of the Carolina Panthers game as protestors arrived outside the Bank of America stadium.

“I am so sick of feeling numb,” said sophomore Erica Jordan. “Black death has become so consistently sensationalized in the media that it’s hard to be okay. It’s overwhelming to feel like our cries of pain are falling on deaf ears.”

On Thursday, Sept. 22, President Nathan O. Hatch released a statement via e-mail expressing his condolences and gratitude for those students who shared their own reflections and sentiments regarding the events in Charlotte.

“Wake Forest is committed to helping students grapple with our most pressing social issues and we will continue to provide oppurtunities to do so,” said Hatch in his e-mail. “My hope is that we, as a society, can move forward with a strong commitment to ensure all of our citizens are treated with dignity and respect.”

Senior Jared Odenbeck reflected on the ongoing chaos and discord that continues to shape and redefine the city he and his family call home.

“Being from south Charlotte, everything happened a good 20 to 25 minutes from me,” Odenbeck said. “The protests haven’t affected me personally necessarily, but it’s sad to see my city in division and in ruins.”

Melissa Harris-Perry, the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest as well as the Editor-in-Large at ELLE.com, published an article on Sept. 22 titled “Why We Have to Teach Our Kids About Charlotte.”

One of her messages was that much of the divides and unwillingness to understand one another comes from the lack of conversations between those of different races, religious, political and social beliefs.

“His death is embedded in our social media with traumatizing frequency,” said Harris-Perry in her article when discussing the death of Terence Crutcher who was shot and killed by police officer Betty Shelby. “It wall papers cable broadcasts and serves as a discussion point and click bait.”

“I am a black American,” Ukairo said. “The constant trauma associated with watching and hearing people who look like me — and could very easily be me —get shot and killed is too much.”

The sensational aspects constructed by narratives in the media create complicated dynamics within dayto-day discourse. Fear of being labeled as one of two extremes makes many students afraid to speak up and have productive conversation with those that may view the world through a different perspective than them.

“There’s a real need for the country to seek truth regardless of your race, class and religious or political beliefs,” Odenbeck said. “Too many people use social media as their news outlet and that leads to a lot of misinformation taken as truth. We need to have real faceto-face conversations. Not on Facebook. Not on Twitter. Unity will come when we pursue goodness and truth above all else.”

North Carolina heavily influences this election The state, more specifically ForsythCounty, will receive heavy presidential campaign attention due to its battleground title

BY HEATHER HARTEL Asst. News Editor harthf15@wfu.edu This presidential election is indisputably different than those before it. Unlike in the past, polls cannot name clear victors, candidates do not have total support from their parties and voters are discouraged and tempted to vote third party or to abstain from voting all together.

With a month left before the earliest votes of the election are cast, it is still unclear whether the winner will be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. New polls are constantly released, each offering different opinions on which candidate could win this historic election.

In such a close race, the winning vote could come down to a single state — to a single county even — placing substantial influence in the hands of a proportionally small number of voters. This year, North Carolina holds considerable power as one of the main battleground states that will shape the election. Currently, Clinton is winning the state by less than one percentage point, but data is continuously shifting.

“North Carolina has attracted frequent visits from Republican and Democratic presidential candidates this year, because it is one of the most evenly balanced states in recent presidential elections,” said John Dinan, a Politics and International Affairs professor who studies elections in North Carolina. “North Carolina is one of only four states where the margin of victory in the 2012 presidential election was within five percentage points, and it is one of only two states where voters changed their preferences between 2008 and 2012.”

Within the highly contested state is more specifically Forsyth County, home to Winston-Salem. A “Politico”

poll named Forsyth County as one of the top 25 battleground counties to watch. The county is unpredictable, as citizens twice elected President Bush, but in the next two elections, chose President Obama. Such power centralized in a small goegraphic area merits the increased candidate and media attention to the state.

“In 2008 and 2012, Republican and Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidates made several visits to the state, but the number and frequency of visits are higher in 2016,” Dinan said. “Focusing on the Piedmont Triad alone, Trump has made appearances in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point, and Clinton has made an appearance in Greensboro. This is a level of attention not seen in prior years.”

Candidates will campaign and spend substantial time in the state, but statistically, in the end, the vote will be decided by voter turnout. Knowing the importance of voter turnout, efforts by both campaigns eagerly reach out to citizens of the states encouraging them to cast a ballot in their favor.

For many college students in North Carolina, their votes would typically be cast as absentee ballots in their respective home states. However, in this divisive election, students are encouraged by the state to register in North Carolina instead.

“The way our election system works, swing states play a critical role in who wins,” said sophomore Mariam Syed.

“Everyone knows that Mississippi will go to Trump, and New York will go to Clinton. It comes down to swing

However, the weight of the presidential election should not overshadow other important elections this season.

Mayoral, gubernatorial and congressional seats are also up for reelection.

“I am voting with an absentee ballot, because it’s really important for to me to still be able to vote for the congressional seats that are up at the same time as the presidential election,” said sophomore Hannah Preiser.

Nonetheless, for students most interested in the outcome of the presidential election, choosing to vote in North Carolina could have a heavier impact on the overall election because of its position to swing either way.

North Carolina native and member of Wake the Vote, Carl McPhail notes the role battleground states have in 2016.

“Everyone’s vote obviously has an effect on this election,” McPhail said. “But if you vote in a swing state, like North Carolina, your vote could decide between Clinton or Trump. I would encourage every eligible voter at Wake Forest to register to vote in North Carolina because of the tied polls in the state.”

North Carolina undoubtedly holds tremendous power this presidential season as perhaps the closest battleground state of the election. With the ability to register in North Carolina, Wake Forest students can partake in electing the candidate of their choice in this significant, historical election.

Increased crime encourages local police to act Following multiple instances of local criminal activity, police work with the community to improve student safety

BY JACKIE PAPE Staff Writer papejg13@wfu.edu On Sept. 9, Cole Medrano woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

His slumber interrupted by the intrusive firearm pointed at him, he jolted awake. Medrano scrambled for words to say to the masked perpetrator. Was he still asleep, he wondered? Unfortunately, this was no nightmare.

After three years of living on residence halls, most seniors opt to move off campus. Living in a single-family home provides seniors with newfound freedom. But a sense of safety has been impaired after a series of recent criminal incidents. Now, the university is responding to the concerns.

Two weeks into the academic year, a house on Long Drive was the target of an armed robbery. Medrano and his roommates, Sam Appling and Daniel Nelli, were home when two men entered through the back door around 9 a.m. The perpetrators demanded the students lie on the floor and to hand over Xanax and cash, none of which they had.

“We offered them computers, phones and wallets, but they didn’t want any of it,” Nelli said.

Appling said they quickly realized that the robbers mistook all three of them for the previous tenant. Rooms were searched, but after a shot was fired and none of the students injured, the intruders left.

The Winston-Salem Police Department arrived to the scene minutes after the students dialed 9-1-1.

“Two squad cars showed up immediately,” Medrano said. “Police cars, detectives, the forensics team, a canine unit and Wake Forest Police were outside our house.”

The next day, the Wake Forest University Police Department (WFUPD) contracted Winston-Salem city officers to do 24-hour patrolling in neighborhoods where Wake Forest students live. As of Sept. 27, all three suspects involved in the armed robbery have been arrested.

“We are trying to make the area less friendly for mischief,” said President Nathan O. Hatch.

As requested, officers now regularly patrol senior Kiley Boland’s neighborhood; yet, she can’t dismiss the fear from recent events. Although the university is working to ensure off-campus safety, students and parents are disenchanted.

“My parents don’t think the school is preventative.

They’re just reactionary,” Boland said. “Kids shouldn’t need to get shot and houses robbed for them to do something.”

Andrew McDonald, a Wake Forest student, understands the worries but thinks students need to act more responsibly off campus.

“On campus we’re insulated with the honor code, and it’s not a big deal to leave your laptop in the library,” McDonald said. “But outside the bubble, you have to be aware of your surroundings.”

Most students are becoming more mindful, yet some don’t think Winston-Salem is as safe as they thought.

While people struggle with such feelings, Javar Jones, a senior from Winston-Salem, has a more optimistic opinion. Jones explained that generally locals don’t want students to have bad perceptions of the city, but there is a divide.

“The majority of members have an unwavering amount of respect for Wake Forest,” Jones said. “But the minority community tends to be more pessimistic because of the things they hear about students throwing parties, just being affluent and aloof.”

In an effort to combat such stereotypes, students are taking matters into their own hands.

“We don’t walk alone, especially at night,” said senior Libby Rudolf. “We keep our phones on us and lock the doors, even when we’re inside.”

It’s no easy task for campus police and city officers to keep students safe, but the collective measures seem promising.

“Unfortunately, no amount of preparation can make our campus and the surrounding area immune to violence,” said Sergeant Lesia Finney. “But Wake Forest is taking measures to prevent similar incidents.”

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department records, in 2015 there were 154 offenses in Wake Forest communities near campus. Such areas are considered in these records, but the numbers do not strictly reflect incidents concerning only Wake Forest students. Offenses include rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

BY JULIA HAINES News Editor hainjm15@wfu.edu Jordan Rae Kelly, the Chief of Staff for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Cyber Division and an alumna of Wake Forest class of 2005, came to campus Monday, Sept.

26 to give a presentation entitled “The FBI’s Cyber Division: Addressing Cyber Threats to our Nation.”

The FBI was recently ranked fifth by Forbes in their list of “Top Companies Where Millennials Most Want to Work.”

There is a summer internship program which Kelly was encouraging students to apply to, for the summer following students’ senior year.

“We’re looking for a variety of people. They really want interdisciplinary people, which Wake Forest is perfect for,” Kelly said. “I would say study literally anything you like, but just really love it, and really be a passionate, honest person with a lot of integrity.”

Kelly also emphasized the importance of students taking advantage of the liberal arts education available to them, referencing how her combination of skills in both computer science and communication proved valuable once she entered the job field after law school.

“The ability to be technical is so important, but it’s also so

critical that you can take those skills and you can translate them to other people. That’s important in the cyber world for a lot of reasons … there’s just so many opportunities where you have to convey your thoughts, either in written or oral speech,” Kelly said. “Spend some time honing those skills, while you have the opportunity here at Wake Forest.

Having strong communication skills really shows clarity of thought.”

While at Wake Forest for her undergraduate degree, Kelly double majored in English and communications, while also studying computer science as an unofficial minor. She wrote for the Old Gold & Black, was a member of Tri Delta sorority and played for the club golf team.

“Ms. Kelly seemed very similar to me in that she had a lot of interests in different areas in college. Yet, she found a job that makes her excited to go to work everyday,” said sophomore Carolyn Roberts. “I took away that if you put in the hard work, have a positive attitude and a strong drive, you’ll find a job that is perfect for you.”

Kelly had not originally imagined herself working for the FBI, but now said that she loves her job, which integrates both sides of her liberal arts background.

“It doesn’t feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, but every job feels like you are making an impact,” she said. “There is no other place where you can get a mission like the FBI.” Sophomore Riley Mistrot admired Kelly’s success in the bureau, commenting that her drive for success is not atypical of Wake Forest students and alumni.

Speaker shares research on gender in Brazil In conjunction with the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Colloquium Series, Jaira Harrington spoke to students Monday

BY LAUREN BARBER Staff Writer barblp0@wfu.edu Anna Julia Cooper Center Postdoctoral Fellow Jaira Harrington delivered a public lecture titled “Served and Protected: Brazilian Black Women and State Violence” on Monday afternoon as part of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Colloquium Series.

Melissa Jenkins, a professor with dual roles in the women’s, gender and sexuality department and the English department, coordinated the event in collaboration with Paige Meltzer, director of the Women’s Center.

Several years ago, the colloquium series grew out of faculty members’ desire to share their scholarship around women’s, gender and sexuality studies with their colleagues. The series shaped an interactive space for feedback on their works-inprogress such as chapters of a book project.

The lectures were soon thereafter opened to students.

“I think it’s an interesting opportunity for students to connect with their faculty as scholars that may not always be their experience in the classroom per se. You may not specifically be learning about your faculty member’s area of research,” Meltzer said.

“I like that there’s a platform for showcasing research through the department, especially as a [WGS] major who may be doing this type of work in the future,” said junior Clara Ortega. “Oftentimes, there’s a disconnect between what we talk about during lectures in the classroom and what our professors actually study.”

This divide is not endemic to one department which is part of why Meltzer seeks to feature faculty scholars from different fields, rotating across a diversity of disciplines.

“There are so many different ways that a critical lens around women, gender and sexuality can be applied in dif-

ferent methodologies, and it’s important to showcase that,” she said. “It pushes students to consider the ways in which this is a critical lens applicable and useful in a lot of different research.”

“As a postdoctoral fellow [Dr. Harrington] is a member of our academic community, and I want to be sure we learn her material while she’s here,” Meltzer said.

Harrington currently serves as a postdoctoral fellow in the department of politics and international affairs. Her research on race, gender and labor in Brazil takes an intersectional approach.

“Much of the literature available on police brutality in Brazil refers primarily to Brazilian men or simply ignores gender altogether,” Harrington said. “I contribute to current research on state violence and democratic inclusion by centralizing gender as an integral component.”

Harrington traveled to Rio, Brazil, for the Olympic Games this summer given her specific research interest in how people living in society’s margins are affected by the state’s “containment” of undesirable people and spaces during large events.

“Mass events create a very specific set of circumstances for police and public relations, especially in terms of black life and death,” she said.

At one point, Harrington asked her audience: “Is this sounding familiar?”

Dozens of heads nodded.

“During events like the Olympics, violence tends to increase towards transwomen since they often have to resort to prostitution as a way of living,” junior Dani Benitez said during the question and answer portion of the event.

Harrington went to Brazil with the intent to make observations and was unable to construct a data set and do interviews that would begin to fill the gap in the research base. “[However,] there are researchers who engage these questions of transwomen, prostitution and sex work that increases tremendously during events like these, especially in areas of the world where black women’s bodies are thought to be accessible,” she said.

“Brazil is not an exception to this.”

During Harrington’s lecture, Rivenburg was reminded of Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech in which the iconic abolitionist, women’s rights activist and former slave proclaims her intrinsic humanity in spite of a civil system that formally considered her chattel.

As Rivenburg reflected, “Afro-Brazilian women are women, too.”

Chinese studies club hosts opera performance A traditional orchestra and opera performed on campus in the first of several Chinese culture events coming this semester

Eleven musicians clad in gold-embroidered, red satin jackets lined the Kulynych Auditorium stage on Saturday, Sept. 24. Their hands danced furiously, plucking and pressing their wooden and bamboo instruments to the tune “Carrying Lotus Roots,” a Chinese folk song-turned-dance.

The Chinese program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures with the Department of Music and Chinese studies club, hosted the Chinese Instruments Symphony Orchestra of North Carolina and the North Carolina Peking Opera Society. The evening of traditional Chinese music and opera was themed “Rhyme of China.”

Exotic, dynamic and uplifting was how freshman Madeline Katsarelis and her friends described the music.

“It was a very different sound than anything I’ve heard,” Katsarelis said.

The Chinese Instruments Symphony Orchestra featured a mix of traditional Chinese and Western instruments in bow-string, plucked-string and wind sections. Every so often, the ensemble divided into various duets and solos to highlight the traditional instruments. One was the solo of the Cucurbit flute, whose silky, rich sound manifested a tranquil scene in the piece “Deep in the Bamboo Forest.”

Interspersed among these pieces were performances by three Peking Opera Society members.

“Almost every province or area in China has its own opera. They have their own dialects and then their different styles of opera. Peking opera is one of them,” said professor Feng Yan Hu of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Peking opera, like other Chinese opera styles, is a scenic performance art rooted in music, literature and elaborate face painting.

Most pieces date back to the 18th century.

Hu, who listened to a lot of traditional Chinese music as a child, saw the Peking Opera Society perform with the orchestra at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill years ago.

“I was very impressed,” Hu recalled. “I wanted to bring them to Wake Forest, because I thought the people in this community [should have] the opportunity to enjoy them.”

WAKE IN A WEEK

Performers and musicians from the Peking Opera Society showcased traditional Chinese culture to Wake Forest students through dance and song.

In 2012, she did. This was Peking Opera Society member, Yongyong Xia’s, first performance.

Xia, returning this year for the two groups’ second Wake Forest appearance, is now a Forsyth County high school student. She was dressed in full traditional Chinese opera costume and hair and makeup, which takes about three hours to complete.

“Hello, cowboy!” Xia chirped in Chinese, the turquoise tassels on her slippers fluttering as she scurried across stage. Xia played the young village girl in the popular “A Playful Duet on the Countryside.”

“It’s a really beautiful art,” said sophomore Annette Barile, a Chinese minor. “I think Peking opera is such an embedded part of Chinese culture.

Although it’s not something you see all the time, even when you are in China, I think it’s something that helps you understand a deeper root of Chinese culture.”

Barile emceed the evening with sophomore Evan Bigley and senior Yue Feng. All three students are members of the Chinese studies club, a group of students that develop opportunities outside the

classroom for students to more fully integrate themselves in the language and culture. Barile serves as vice president.

“When you’re learning a language, it’s not just about knowing the words. It’s about understanding the culture,” Barile said. “If you want to understand metaphors and idioms and things like that, you have to understand the culture, or else it just seems like a bunch of random words.”

The club’s next event is a USA-China Friendship Table at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Benson 301.

“This year, the Chinese Studies club has shifted its goals to not only host events for students to better understand Chinese language and culture but to also create opportunities where Chinese and American students can interact to form new relationships,” said junior Lucas Wille, club president and Chinese and Business and Enterprise Management double major. “Through events like karaoke competitions, movie nights and topic-focused conversation tables, we hope that students can make lasting friendships that will span borders.”

Increased fossil fuel consumption over the last two centuries has increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to its highest level in over 800 thousand years.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps solar radiation in the atmosphere, resulting in higher global surface temperatures. As carbon dioxide build up passed unprecedented points, it’s analogous to filling up a scolding cup of coffee without paying attention — eventually, it will overflow and burn the hell out of you.

Global temperatures have risen by nearly 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit over the last century, with most of this warming of our dear Mother Earth occurring since 1970.

In fact, 15 of the 16 hottest years ever recorded have taken place since 2001, and 2016 is set to be the hottest year on record by quite a margin.

As I’ve walked around campus this semester to class, the mailroom, Water Tower Field and back to my off-campus house, I’ve felt that familiar sweaty stickiness as my shirt clings to my back. The heat has been the kind that pierces your skin and leaves you tired. Casting a glance from side to side, I see that everyone else looks the same: sweaty and worn. It’s always hot and humid this time of year, especially in North Carolina, but the bottom line is that it’s hotter than usual. Climate change is as real as Wake Forest midterms, grade deflation and binge drinking.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, the current rise in global temperatures threatens the extinction of 25 percent to 35 percent of plant and animal species.

Animals like the Pika, which live in the mountains, are being forced to move to higher altitudes to find tolerable temperatures.

Rising temperatures have led to shrinking ice sheets in areas like Greenland and Antarctica, where more than 11 miles (or 5 trillion tons) of ice have melted between 2002 and 2014. This threatens hunting grounds for polar bears. As water warms, trout and salmon populations will continue to shrink.

Further, ducks and geese have had to change their migration patterns to avoid the cruel and unusual weather. If you’re a fan of hunting, take note because your dinner may disappear.

Another haunting trend in climate change is the rise in sea levels. According to the National Ocean Service, the two main causes of rising sea levels are the expansion

of warmed ocean water and the melting of land-based ice. All this heat, and you’re left with sea levels that have risen 6.7 inches over the last century and are conservatively estimated by the EPA to rise between one and four feet by 2100. The danger is not just that ecosystems such as coral reefs and the sea life that relies on them will disappear but also that more frequent flooding will occur. Such flooding is estimated to be as much as 900 percent more frequent in coastal areas than it was just 50 years ago. I hate to sound like the fiddler of the world’s tiniest violin, but this dangerous change is critical because almost 40 percent of Americans live in densely populated coastal areas.

According to NASA, 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends are due to human activities. It has become clear that we cannot sit idly by.

Indeed, the question isn’t whether climate change is real, whether we caused it or whether the Chinese fabricated it to make America’s manufacturing industry non-competitive (yes, Trump said this).

The question is how we face it and how we overcome it.

When classmates and friends first hear I’ve opted to live downtown for my senior year, I’m often met with confusion and skepticism. In disbelief, they ask, “You’re living downtown? By yourself?”

“I do,” I respond. “And you should too.”

Most fourth-year students who choose to live off campus prefer to live in singlefamily homes, fraternity houses or nearby apartments. These residencies are attractive ,because they allow students to live alongside friends and within close proximity to campus. After being cooped up in a dorm room for three years, most of us are excited for the freedom that comes with living off campus. I, however, wanted a little more.

Vibrant murals sprawl along walls and windows of nearly every building in the Art District, and the skyline is an ever-present reminder of the city’s rich history. Every weekend there is a different festival parade or celebration to enjoy. Boring moments are certainly few and far between.

Furthermore, it appears that many Wake Forest students are disenfranchised with the Winston-Salem community. Living downtown gives me the opportunity to interact with more members of the community.

I truly enjoy the relationships that I have formed with local business owners, shopkeepers and the residents in my building.

Living downtown has completely changed my perspective of the Camel City.

Downtown Winston-Salem has seen substantial growth in the last few years. For one, the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter has promoted the city’s revival. Many graduate students and researchers have flocked downtown to these new facilities.

In turn, local developers have constructed

numerous new apartment buildings and lofts. Currently, there are more options than ever if you are interested in living downtown.

In addition, numerous new restaurants and bars have opened in the area. Even after living downtown for four months, I have yet to visit every part of the city.

My apartment allows me to break up the monotony of living inside the Wake Forest bubble. Every day I am able to find something or meet somebody new. Embracing

the atmosphere of community has allowed me to expand my horizons in WinstonSalem.

I also enjoy the ability to remove myself from the stressors of school and enjoy being home. As an underclassman, I found that living on campus is suffocating at times.

By contrast, I have come to appreciate many aspects of campus life that I previously took for granted. Overall, I believe that living downtown has made my experience at Mother So Dear more holistic.

Some American politicians have suggested that the U.S. should not try to have a friendly relationship with Russia but rather should view them as a dangerous threat to U.S. interests.

In 2015, Hillary Clinton said, “We have to do more talking about how we try to confine, contain, deter Russian aggression in Europe and beyond.”

Republicans like John McCain have also been very critical of Russia and have described their government as an “adversary.”

Many of these politicians have suggested actively countering Russian military operations in Crimea and Syria and slapping them with harsh economic sanctions.

One common argument for those viewing Russia as a threat is that Russia’s invasions into its neighboring states would threaten U.S. economic interests in those regions.

However, if you look at a map, you can see that the countries that are threatened by this aggression are not significant trading partners with the U.S. Our total trade with all the Baltic States combined is less than 0.2 percent of total U.S. trade.

If trade in any of those countries is to be disrupted by a Russian invasion, the effect on the U.S. economy would be insignificant.

It has also been suggested that the U.S. should expand sanctions on Russia to discourage this kind of behavior.

However, this would be a bad idea.

While U.S. and European Union sanctions on Russia caused some harm to Russia during the first year that they were implemented, the effect on its

In comparison, Obama’s is at 50 percent and Bush averaged 49 percent.

It could be just a lingering Cold War attitude of distrust. It could also be that pro-Israel leaders in government and the media don’t like Russia, because they support Iran who funds Hamas. But whatever the motivation is, there’s no reason we shouldn’t have a better relationship with Russia going forward.

North Carolina’s House Bill 2 has become one of the most divisive pieces of legislation that the state’s General Assembly has passed in recent history.

Considered to be the most anti-LGBT law on the books in the U.S., the bill prohibits individuals from filing wrongful termination claims in state courts if the individual believes he or she was fired because of some form of illegal discrimination -including one’s gender identity or sexual orientation- and it also mandates that all people must use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex listed on their birth certificate in government buildings.

Proponents of the bill maintain that it is a common sense measure, as it protects the privacy and safety of North Carolinians.

They cite instances where a middle school girl would be forced to share a changing room with a boy and insist that the bill, in the words of the president pro tempore of the North Carolina Senate, Phil Berger, “has nothing to do with discrimination and everything to do with protecting women’s privacy and keeping men out of girls’ bathrooms.”

Opponents of the legislation reject this notion, claiming that the law violates the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses of the Constitution, as it is an invasion of privacy for transgender people and discriminates on the basis of sex and sexual orientation.

These opponents are not alone. Entities ranging from the NBA, who decided to move its 2017 All-Star Game over the law, to PayPal, who decided against expanding into Charlotte, have openly demonstrated their disapproval of the legislation.

Unlikely additions to this list in recent days have included two Republican state senators: Sen. Rick Gunn of Burlington and Sen. Tamara Barringer from Cary.

Even though most of the opposition to HB2 has revolved around its discriminatory provisions, these two lawmakers made scant mention of such provisions and instead emphasized the detrimental economic impact HB2 has inflicted on the state.

While Barringer and Gunn should, of course, be applauded for their pleas to change the bill, it should be noted that they are likely not doing so due to an exceptional change of heart regarding the rights of LGBT individuals. They were principally driven by what almost all politicians seek — reelection.

Both senators represent areas that have already suffered economically and will continue to be hit hard by the effects of the law, and both are in the midst of reelection campaigns.

It is only in this moment that these legislators have spoken out, and they are probably only doing it because they have started to understand a painful reality: they will now have to explain to their constituents why potential jobs will leave their districts and why millions of dollars in investment will not flow into North Carolina’s economy.

Without a doubt, passing on financial opportunities like those seems foolish, and an effort to take a stand and support HB2 would be virtually untenable for Barringer or Gunn.

But what is really troubling is not the monetary losses that North Carolina will endure but rather media and politicians’ fixation on nothing but little pieces of green paper.

Gunn and Barringer, like too many others in the General Assembly, remained silent about the bill for months. They may have recognized that it was controversial and that it had what Barringer deemed “unintended consequences,” but they certainly did not make those concerns known until the effects of the legislation were embarrassingly clear.

The conventional wisdom holds that opponents of HB2 shifted their tactics to emphasize economic consequences, because they thought supporters of the bill were unlikely to be persuaded by appeals to the basic and fundamental human rights and dignity that all people deserve. These appeals apparently,

have fallen out of favor among representatives in Raleigh. But too many groups have accentuated the detrimental effects on the state’s economy at the expense of affirming the unassailable rights that LGBT individuals deserve.

The online magazine “Facing South” recently conducted a comprehensive look at the aggregate economic effects of HB2. The piece is a fantastic documentation of just how damaging HB2 really is to the state of North Carolina, but it did little more than passively mention the discriminatory provisions and did not address the rights of LGBT people at all.

To be fair, the magazine has placed more emphasis on the harm that the bill inflicts on the LGBT community in other pieces, but any and all arguments that call for the repeal of HB2 must have the basic equality of every human being as their philosophical underpinning. Indeed, to the first-time observer of the magazine’s analysis of the economic ramifications of the bill, it would seem as if opponents are concerned with nothing more than how much money will ultimately fall into North Carolina’s pocket.

The LGBT community in North Carolina, then, has been trivialized, if they have not been already. It truly is shameful (albeit somewhat understandable) that it was not appeals to basic human dignity but rather to realizations of just how harmful HB2 would be in a financial sense that finally provoked Republicans to condemn the bill.

This realization thus highlights an essential reminder for all who oppose HB2: do not oppose it solely because you are worried about North Carolina’s bottom line. Do not oppose it because you are angry that the NBA AllStar Game will not be in Charlotte anymore.

Oppose it on the grounds that the North Carolina General Assembly has allowed for the blatant discrimination based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation. Demand the repeal of HB2 because it is the right thing to do while naturally calling attention to the economic detriment along the way to bolster your case.

In July, I had the good fortune of attending a panel hosted by WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks” on how HB2 changed North Carolina. I arrived early to the event and was lucky enough to meet one of the panelists, whose name was Trey Greene. A social worker who is the cofounder and executive director of Transcend Charlotte, Greene works to promote social

justice for transgender people and is a transgender man.

He seemed nervous when I met him, as anyone who was about to speak in front of hundreds of people certainly would be, but throughout the evening, he displayed another emotion that was very disconcerting. He seemed upset, and not because he was angry at those who supported the bill, but because he had to get up on a stage under gleaming lights and justify who he is and why he deserves the basic protections that the overwhelming majority of North Carolina citizens take for granted. He undoubtedly voiced his disapproval of the bill, but he repeatedly spoke about life beyond HB2 after the dust finally settles, whenever that may be. He highlighted how misunderstood the transgender community is and how we must all do more to educate the public at large about transgender people and the unique struggles that they often face.

We must repeal HB2 because of people like Greene. We have to call for the dismantling of the legislation not because we are worried about money, but because we are deeply concerned that scores of people like Greene will somehow feel as if they are less of a human being because of the bill. Repeal HB2 for the right reasons, and never forget to always put the individuals who the law affects the most at the forefront of the discussion.

Little did we know when making this promise nine months ago that we would be saying goodbye to the Wake Forest legend and global icon, Arnold Palmer.

When Wake Forest men’s head golf coach Jerry Haas receives recruits at Wake Forest, he makes sure they understand one thing regarding Wake Forest’s reverence for its most famous alumni.

“There is only one statue on this campus, and its of Arnold Palmer,” Haas said.

It’s a simple fact that encapsulates an absolute truth: Palmer was Wake Forest. A boy from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, who arrived at a small, regional Baptist University by chance, became the face of everything Wake Forest University embodies.

Yes, Palmer was a historically great athlete, but he was so much more to so many people. Not only did he completely change the game of golf with his unbelievable personality and business sense, but he cared for everyone he came in contact with.

It’s hard to quantify with words just how much this man, endearingly known as “The King,” meant to so many different people. He embraced fans, competitors and all individuals alike; he strove to make a lasting impact on the world and everyone in it.

He will long be remembered for the drink named after him and for his incredible golf career. His soft, pleasant smile and his incredibly kind nature will never forgotten. Long called golf’s greatest ambassador, Palmer became Wake Forest’s greatest ambassador. Palmer was a man beloved beyond the golf course, truly taking Wake Forest’s motto “Pro Humanitate” with him everywhere he went. His selflessness and ability to make each individual with whom he interacted feel most important truly exemplified his true persona.

Arnold Palmer, a Demon Deacon legend on and off the golf course, captured the spirit of Pro Humanitate everywhere he went and impacted the lives of everybody he met in a positive way. well as his many achievements and accolades, which include but are not limited to his recognition as Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year (1960), his World of Golf Hall of Fame induction (1974), his PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award (1998), his achievement of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2004) and the Congressional Gold Medal (2009).

Each of his honors and achievements have given the OGB incredible opportunities to celebrate the successes of a former Demon Deacon at the top of their profession.

Arguably, one of the greatest recent memories Wake Forest fans have of Palmer was his participation as the honorary

captain in the 2007 Orange Bowl. Joining Louisville’s honorary captain, Muhammad Ali, it was a meeting between “The King” and “The Greatest” at midfield for the coin toss.

It is memories such as this that Wake Forest fans will remember, memories that provided great pride for our university.

All of us here at the OGB, past and present, thank Palmer for years of memories and exciting content that gave our weekly publication substance and pride.

Rest in peace to the legend, Arnold Palmer, forever a Demon Deacon.

BY PRESIDENT NATHAN HATCH University President hatch@wfu.edu I remember the first time I visited Arnold Palmer in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, I walked around his office, taking in the displays of memorabilia that marked moments of his life: four Masters trophies and the corresponding scorecards, President Dwight Eisenhower’s golf clubs, a Norman Rockwell portrait of the golfer, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. He still had the Pennzoil tractor that co-starred with him in early television commercials, reels and reels of tournament film on bookshelves and

all of the golf shoes and clubs he used throughout his career.

And on the wall to the left of his desk is his chapter on Wake Forest. There is an aerial photo of campus, a picture of the Quad after it had been rolled, his honorary degree and a photo of him speaking at Commencement in 2005. In the center of that collection is a picture of a college-aged Palmer with his best friend. They were holding a trophy — evidence of a Wake Forest golf victory.

Over the last decade, it has been a delight to get to know Palmer. He was a gentleman of great warmth and grace, a person who sustained meaningful friendships and one who loved Wake Forest and did a tremendous amount to support and advance our university.

Palmer loved people, and he treated them with dignity and respect. He kept every gift that anyone ever sent him: posters from local Girl Scout troops, honors from Rotary Clubs around the country, customized

Men’s golf team reflects on Arnold Palmer The current men’s golf team share their reflections on “The King” and how he has shaped their lives

BY WAKE FOREST MEN’S GOLF Contributing Writers Lee Detmer ‘19 Mr. Palmer’s charisma, kindness and philanthropic attitude shine bright with his passing. Without ever having met “The King”, he has given me a campus and facility to grow and improve both as a golfer and as a young man. I am reminded every day of his values of patriotism, work ethic and excellence as I walk past his statue. The facilities we practice on, the dorms we live in and the grounds of this campus are all due to his generosity. There is not a single human being who has had or will have such a massive impact on a school and a program as Mr. Palmer has on Wake Forest. His lasting legacy will always leave a mark, something this team will carry with it for many years to come. Though he may be gone, he certainly will never be forgotten and will always hold a special place in the history, present and future of our Mother So Dear, Wake Forest University.

No golfer will ever leave a legacy greater than that of Mr. Palmer in the world of golf and at the Wake Forest. Like Lee, I was never able to meet “The King”, but he has left us many things that are unattainable anywhere else. Coming from a family that was not able to afford a membership at a country club, Mr. Palmer gave me a practice facility that I am able to use on any occasion. It gave me a place where I feel like I belong. That being said, more importantly, “The King”, gave me a campus with a deep history and tradition, as well as opportunities to grow as a person.

Every day I walk past his statue and I am reminded of the opportunities that Mr. Palmer has given to me. He gives me a reason to give it my all, for golf or anything else, and to try to live life as he did. Because of Mr. Palmer, it is an honor to be on the Wake Forest golf team, and may he rest in peace.

Ben Balter ‘17 Mr. Palmer transcended the game of golf not only because of his ability to play the game but the way he treated those around him. While I only had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Palmer briefly at the unveiling of his statue during my freshman year, I was able to see why he was beloved by the entire golf community. He took time to shake hands with every individual that approached him and genuinely cared about the conversations he was having. He stood and signed autographs for an hour after the ceremony, and I noticed that he did not once rush a signature and each one was legible. During my brief conversation with him I immediately knew how much love he had not only for Wake Forest golf, but for the entirety of Wake Forest University.

He truly loved being a Demon Deacon and embraced the spirit of Pro Humanitate. We as a golf program and a school are forever indebted to him, and he will always remain a part of Wake Forest University.

Tanner Owen ‘18 Though my personal connection with Mr. Palmer was minimal, stretching no further than a simple handshake, his influence as both a player and a leader in the game of golf has had a powerful effect on me. I speak for many others, both players and fans, that never really met him but feel an association that is purely indescribable. That alone is enough to epitomize greatness. To validate this point, students paid homage immediately after the news by visiting his statue outside our practice center. This unified and touched my team and me in a way that we had never felt before. This is the embodiment and breadth of his influence. This memorialization made it so real for us as a team,

To say he is the biggest influence on the game fails to highlight his true importance. He touched so many including myself. He was heralded not only as a player but also as an ambassador and personality. This is why he is “The King” — his reaches go far past the golf course. His legacy lives on and this is why so many, including my teammates and I, hold him in such high regard.

Clancy Waugh ‘17 From the day I touched a golf club, I was infatuated with everything Mr. Palmer. The first memory I have of Arnold Palmer is from kindergarten when I received an assignment in which I had to choose who I would put on the dollar bill. Of course, I chose “The King”, Mr. Palmer. The assignment required me to write a sentence or two saying why I chose the individual and I replied, “I chose Arnold Palmer because he is a great American. The dollar bill will also be green because a golf course is green.”

Thinking it was unbelievable that a six-year-old could think of Arnie in this regard, my father decided to ship the note to Mr. Palmer himself. Assuming that there was no way I would get a response, we quickly forgot about the assignment. However, no more than two weeks later, there was a letter addressed directly to me from Arnold Palmer of Latrobe, PA. Not only did he write me back, but he wrote what looked to be a novel on how much this had meant to him. I believe this story shows just who he was as a man and not just as a celebrity. Throughout all of his success, he was able to stay unbelievably grounded. From that day on I knew I wanted to attend Wake Forest and play golf just as Arnie once did. Rest in peace to “The King” of so much more than just golf. He surely will be missed.

Charlie Kennerly ‘20 Since I can remember, Mr. Palmer has always been an idol of mine. Not only do I idolize his great talent for golf, but more importantly his character, honor, courage and respect to others are what stand out to me the most. After watching all the tributes to him over these past couple days, I am truly amazed that through all his time in the spotlight, he has managed to live with such class going about life with the motto, “treat people how you want to be treated.”

As I walk past the Arnold Palmer statue everyday to practice, I realize how honored I am to attend the place Arnold Palmer called home. Mr. Palmer has had such a signifi-

cant impact on the golf program at Wake Forest and the university as a whole. Words cannot describe how much he meant to me and the people I surround myself with.

I speak for everyone when I say you will truly be missed, Mr. Palmer. Go Deacs.

Cameron Young ‘19 Though I never met Mr. Palmer, I feel that I knew him through those that he touched and through everything that he did for the game of golf. My only personal connection to him was a letter he sent me after my commitment to play here at Wake Forest. I will never forget how I felt when I opened the envelope and saw his signature on the bottom of the page. This is a true example of his genuine care for others and never-ending desire to impact the world of golf in a way that only “The King” himself could.

There has never been and never will be another leader like him for golf and each of us on the team owe the opportunity to attend Wake Forest to him. His greatness will never be forgotten and I am sure I will not be the only one to use him as an example to follow throughout all parts my life. His work ethic, personality, patriotism and true love for others are things that most of us can only dream to emulate.

Will Zalatoris ‘18 Mr. Palmer lived life to the fullest. He was a military man, a legend in the golf world, but most importantly, he was a role model for the world. Mr. Palmer was an incredible human being, and it was a privilege to spend time with him on the phone and exchange letters with him throughout my career. He encouraged me through some struggles in my game, and he encouraged me through the brighter moments. Anytime I won a tournament, I got a congratulatory letter from Mr. Palmer due to being on his scholarship. No trophy will ever come close in value, in my opinion, than the congratulatory notes he sent me.

All of his stories that he shared with me had life lessons.

The lessons of how to carry myself as a true gentleman are lessons that I will pass on. There is no doubt that his legacy will continue to live on with the lessons that he passed on to the lucky people he touched. There were many golf lessons involved in our talks, but the things I will value the most will be his lessons about becoming a man. I am forever grateful for the impact Mr. Palmer had on my life.

BY TOMMASO MONETA Staff Writer monet14@wfu.edu This week, the golf community mourns the loss of one of the greatest players of all time. Arnold Palmer died at age 87 at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he had gone for a cardiac exam.

It was first announced by the United States Golfers’ Association (USGA) with the following post on Twitter: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Arnold Palmer, golf ’s greatest ambassador, at age 87.”

Born in 1929 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Palmer, also fondly known as “The King,” dominated the green from the 1950s to the 1960s. During his professional career, which began in 1950, he won 62 titles, including seven Major championships. More specifically, he was a four-time Masters winner (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964), a one-time U.S. Open winner (1960) and two-time British Open winner (1961 and 1962).

He was golf ’s greatest ambassador and inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

The passing of Arnold Palmer, world golf icon, symbolizes the exit of one of the last original legends of the sport.

In fact, it was his victories that created such enthusiasm among spectators and inspired the 26 million golfers in the U.S. alone.

His spectacular shots and aura were also a factor in getting golf events aired on television. How can we forget the thousands of supporters, soon dubbed

“Arnie’s Army,” who followed their idol everywhere he played?

“Arnold was a great friend. He was a great friend to the game of golf, a great friend to the sporting world,” said Jack Nicklaus, commonly known along with Gary Player and Palmer as the big three, in a recent interview with CNN. “He liked to do the things the right way. He was sort of the one who popularized the game of golf from a

fan standpoint, on television.”

Arnold Palmer simply transcended the game of golf. He was “The King” of the game and he will be forever. Gary Player adds via Twitter: “Of course, like anybody, we had our differences but these never stood in the way of our relationship and I will miss him terribly.”

We cannot forget the immense generosity of his soul and the contributions around the world. Since he was an avid flyer and often flew his own Cessna to golf tournaments, the airport of his birth city was named after him. More importantly though, the whole pediatric ward — he was the primary benefactor — of Latrobe carries his name.

He also created a treatment center for women and girls in Orlando, Florida, which he dedicated to his beloved Winnie, who was his first wife. She passed in 1999, and he remarried Kathleen Gawthrop in 2005.

Arnold Palmer was a precursor in creating Pro Humanitate projects, and this can be seen with his involvement on campus.

In fact, a legacy for Wake Forest, golf stars have followed his footsteps: Jay Haas, Curtis Strange, Bill Haas, Billy Andrade, Webb Simpson, Jerry Haas and Darren Clark are all a result of the profound impact that Arnold Palmer had on the program both as a collegiate student and later in life.

The pain in our hearts is great, and it is hard to put into words. However, the memories of Arnie that we will hold in our hearts are all joyful.

golf equipment. He signed every book, photo and pin flag put in front of him; he had stacks of items ready to be signed and mailed back to waiting fans. And he welcomed visitors into his world with gracious hospitality.

Palmer often entertained groups of Wake Forest alumni and friends in Latrobe. He would invite the group to tour his office, pointing out special trophies and awards and explaining the context behind the pictures that overtook his walls.

During those visits, he would prove his great ability to captivate people with his stories. One story often recanted involved President Eisenhower, after leaving office, showing up unannounced on his doorstep in Latrobe as a birthday surprise. Then, there was the one where he beat the great Yankee Roger Maris to win the 1961 Hickok Belt given to the professional athlete of the year. There was another story about how he broke all kinds of aviation records flying a plane around the world.

It was his love of people that made him a good friend. His loyal assistant, Doc Giffin, had worked with Palmer for more than 50 years, and the other staff in his office counted their years of service in decades, too. When he met you, it was as if you had been his friend for years.

As a professional celebrity, he reached the

heights of fame and fortune. He’s probably the most important golfer that has ever lived. He built an enormously successful business, won scores of distinguished awards and has dined with presidents and kings.

Through all of it, he never forgot who he was or from whence he came.

Palmer didn’t come from privilege. His father, who had worked in steel mills, became the groundskeeper — and eventually the club pro — at the Latrobe Country Club near Pittsburgh. Arnold Palmer learned golf from working on golf courses, not from enjoying them as places of leisure and privilege.

Even with his vast success, he remained deeply committed to his hometown.

Latrobe is not a large or pretentious place, but it was Palmer’s home and he loved it.

He invested in its people and organizations.

He operated the country club where his father had worked, and he ate lunch there every day.

He also remembered Wake Forest. More than any other person, Palmer is responsible for the great golf tradition that Wake Forest enjoys.

He came here almost by accident, following his friend, Bud Worsham (’50), who had been a highly sought after golf recruit.

Palmer’s meteoric rise on the professional tour after leaving Wake Forest enhanced the university’s reputation, and his scholarships served, in time, to recruit a host of

Arnold Palmer gave a lot to the university over his tenure as a student and afterwards, including the Palmer residence hall in 1982. superb athletes like Curtis Strange (’77), Billy Andrade (’86) and Webb Simpson (’08).

Palmer once told me, “At Wake Forest, there was a friendship and education that created a background for my entire life. It didn’t come out of the books; it came out of the association with my fellow students and my professors.”

This week, Wake Forest lost a giant. We lost a gentleman who loved people — a man who offered us the depths of his kindness. We lost a legend who changed the way we play the game of golf. And we lost a friend who displayed what it meant to live with character and honor and so inspires us to do the same.

In the first round, he defeated Vincent Lin (Duke) 6-3, 6-2, while in the quarterfinals he defeated Sam Rice (UNCC), who was seeded fourth, 7-6, and 6-2. In the semifinals defeated Joshua Wardell (Florida), 6-1, 6-1 and beat Felipe Sarrasague (Elon), 6-4, 6-4, in the final to claim the victory.

Newcomers to the team Sean Hill and Charlie Parry each picked up a win on Sunday, getting valuable experience that will pay dividends in the future. Cristian Seraphim, who redshirted his freshman year, recalls his experiences as a Demon Deacon and praises the coaching staff for the decision they helped him make: What does it mean to redshirt? How has it influenced you?

For me it meant to get a little stronger during my first semester, have a little more time to get adjusted to college in the U.S., and use that extra time to practice and grow as a person. I wanted to put myself in a position to be ready to play and compete.

My biggest adjustment was improving my conditioning and the extra time helped. I got physically and mentally stronger during my first semester.

Looking back, it was the best decision I made. I now have four and a half years to complete college, which I can do with a lighter courseload, thus allowing me to also concentrate on tennis.

What advice would you give your freshman teammates?

Pay attention to details.

Do everything, give everything and put in 100 percent effort; don’t do things the easier way, just do them to the best of your ability, and the results will come.

It has to be the ACC Championships last year. That was amazing. Winning it for the first time in program history was a great feeling, especially since we clinched the title when no one expected us to. In the finals against Virginia I was down in the third set 3 – 0, but came back to win 6 – 4. I then gave the stage to a freshman who finished off Virginia. The team got the job done. To win both individually and as a team provides the best memories.

How do you stay competitive with a roster that grows in depth?

It is extremely competitive, and there are a lot of really good people playing tennis here at Wake Forest. You have

to embrace the fact that you have a chance every day to play with 8-9 sensational athletes. I try to enjoy this and not let this competition bring me down; actually, I try to let it lift me up.

That’s what we are trying to do in practice: ensure the whole team improves, we try to make each other better. I try to avoid negative feelings towards those I am playing against; I am competitive though, but no hard feelings because it is only a game.

Who served as a role model for you in your tennis career?

I would have to say Roger Federer. I watched him growing up. He is the perfect tennis player that everybody wants to be. With regards to American tennis players, I like John Isner, who is my height. He is what my game should be like.

Men’s soccer extends winning streak to four games Stifling defense, consistent offense against in-state rivals allow Demon Deacons to notch 8-1-1 record

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Demon Decons shut out the NC State Wolfpack at Spry Stadium. The match ended in a 1-0 victory with a game winning goal from senior Jacori Hayes.

The defense put up a strong fight, continuing their shutout streak to seven games.

While the Wolfpack had some strong opportunities at the end of the second half, they could not get the ball past Alec Farrell, who made four important saves.

Jacori Hayes’s seventh career game-winning goal was enough to ensure the win.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Deacs traveled to Davidson to earn another win. The Wildcats could not stop Jacori Hayes in the second half, who got on the board in the 68th minute with a goal and assisted Hank Gauger’s game winner in the 75th minute. This was Gauger’s first goal of the season.

“I think the team came out strong tonight and kept the ball pretty well,” said sophomore defender Sam Raben.

“We knew Davidson wasn’t a team to be taken lightly, and everyone did what they were supposed to do.”

The Wake Forest men’s soccer team has found their identity as a staunch defensive team, as they got their consecutive scoreless-minutes streak to 855 minutes and 46 seconds against N.C. State.

The team looked to extend their shutout streak to eight straight games but were unable to do so with Davidson’s 88th minute goal.

This goal also ended Wake Forest’s 855 minute and 46-second shutout streak.

“Mid-week games can be tricky, and the boys just went out and got the job done,” said junior forward Jon Bakero.

“Now we just need to focus on Friday, because obviously it will be a really hard game on the road.”

The Demon Decons will travel to South Carolina on Friday to take on the No. 5 Clemson Tigers. Their 6-1-1 record will make it a tough game for Wake Forest.

“Getting a win against Clemson will be the only thing on our mind until Friday,” said Raben.

Week of upsets in ACC clouds playoff picture Deacons and Blue Devils knock off ACC rivals as teams prepare to enter conference play

BY BRANDON PALMER Staff Writer palmbo14@wfu.edu Week four of the college football season brought on a relatively calm slate of games in the ACC. The biggest news of the week was Wake Forest going into Indiana and defeating the Hoosiers.

The Deacs have already made a lot of noise early in the season and the perception of this team has shifted. With a big game coming up against the NC State Wolfpack the Deacs have an opportunity to really put the ACC on notice.

Elsewhere around the league, it was a relatively quiet week in the conference. The biggest surprise of the week came during the Duke and Notre Dame game.

The Blue Devils traveled to South Bend, Indiana in what should’ve been an easy game for Irish. Duke had struggled so far during the season and the Irish had very high expectations coming into the season.

Notre Dame got off to an early lead and appeared as if they would run away from the Blue Devils; however, Duke hung around and was ultimately able to knock off the Irish in South Bend.

This was a huge win for Duke — a team that lost

to Wake Forest at home by 10 — and an absolutely horrific loss for Notre Dame. The Irish, once considered a national title contender have now fired their defensive coordinator and could potentially miss a bowl game this season.

Perhaps the most exciting game of the week came in the matchup between North Carolina and Pittsburgh. The Panthers led the game for much of the way in Chapel Hill, but the Tarheels never went away.

Pittsburgh was leading by 13 points with six minutes remaining in the game and looked as if they would escape Chapel Hill with a big victory.

The Tarheels battled back and were able to cut the Pittsburgh lead down to six points with about five minutes remaining. The Tarheels got the ball back and scored an incredible touchdown with two seconds remaining.

This was a huge win for the Tarheels as it sepearates them from the pack in the ACC Atlantic Division.

The rest of the league won their games over lesser opponents in relatively easy and boring fashion.

Conference play will finally ramp up this following week, and we should begin to gain some clarity in the conference.

The biggest game of the week within the conference, and likely around the country, will be the matchup between Clemson and Louisville.

Both teams are ranked in the top 10, and Clemson will actually be an underdog at home.

Football reaches 4-0 for first time since 2006 The flexible Demon Deacon defense halted the Hoosier attack

BY EMILY LEITER Staff Writer leiter16@wfu.edu Wake Forest football improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2006 after handing Indiana their first loss of the season.

Many fans who tentatively believed the Demon Deacons could win at a Big Ten school for the second time in history lost hope when, in the first play, Indiana receiver Nick Westbrook took a short pass 75 yards to the end zone.

The Deacs, however, exhibited the mental toughness that has been characteristic of their style of play this season and refused to let that touchdown set the tone.

“I’m really proud of the way that we just kept playing, regardless of the scoreboard, regardless of the situation,” said head coach Dave Clawson.

The Demon Deacons answered with three touchdowns and a 46-yard field goal before the Hoosiers could get another point on the scoreboard.

“It starts Tuesday morning in full pads.

If you know you’re prepared well, then, no matter if you give up a big play, the scheme will come together, and you will be able to execute the defense,” said sophomore linebacker Jaboree Williams.

Wake Forest was outrun by Indiana but proved not to need those yards to rack up touchdowns. Last week, Delaware put up 21 points with less than 100 yards by taking defensive risks and forcing turnovers. This week, Wake Forest employed

the same strategy even more effectively against the Hoosiers.

The Deacs executed five interceptions and scored 17 points off those turnovers.

The team’s greatest strength, both defensively and offensively, is that their talent isn’t concentrated in a few exceptional guys. The overall chemistry and flexibility have allowed new key players to emerge in every game and the team to dominate even when some skilled players are injured.

Redshirt freshman Jessie Bates led the defense with eight tackles, a pick six, an additional interception and a recovery of Indiana’s final onside kick. He was rightfully named the ACC’s Defensive Back of the Week.

Twelve different players have each gained over 50 offensive yards for the undefeated Demon Deacons this season.

Neither Kendall Hinton nor Cade Carney played against Indiana due to knee injuries. Despite the loss of the two powerhouses, the Deacs maintained steady confidence.

When overcoming injuries, team resilience has been crucial for the Deacs.

“It shows that we have some depth,” said quarterback John Wolford. “We have guys that were able to step in and still win a football game, so some of these injuries aren’t as catastrophic as they would have been in previous years. Guys are prepared.

Any given moment they can go in, so they have to prepare like they’re a starter in order to play well. I think we are doing that and building this momentum, and we have to keep it going.”

They have kept that momentum rolling on both sides of the ball for four straight games.

With six interceptions, the Wake Forest secondary successfully held off the Hoosier offense for the crucial early-season ACC victory.

“Our offense answered the ball every time they had to and consistently got it back to a two-score game,”said Clawson.

“I think any time you can go on the road and beat a Power Five team in their stadium, you have to be proud of your football team.”

Wake Forest remained in the lead after the first few minutes of the second quarter, achieving a 33-28 victory over Indiana.

The Demon Deacons’ endurance, preparation, and adaptability have set them apart

not only from Wake football teams of recent years, but also from many other 2016 Division I teams.

They’re well on their way to the AP Top 25 Rankings for the first time in seven years.

“Our team has a lot of confidence now, but the challenge gets tougher,” said Clawson.

After winning four football games in a month for just the 10th time in school history, the Deacs will open October by heading to Raleigh and taking on the NC State Wolfpack on Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Campus unites to celebrate like 90s kids and stay “aWake all night” The popular tradition drew over 1,000 students for a night of inflatables, karaoke, food and fun with the entire Wake Forest community

Picture stuffed animals, free food, inflatable games, customizable signs and over a dozen prize baskets.

It sounds like a college student’s dream, but all of these elements and more filled the decorated floors of Benson on the night of Saturday, Sept. 24.

Student Union hosts “aWake All Night” each semester in an effort to bring students together for a giant campus-wide celebration.

Junior Jaime Fashimpaur, the director of aWake All Night and leader of the Weekly and Special Events committees for Student Union, describes aWake All Night as an opportunity for students to break out of their comfort zones.

“It seems intimidating to throw yourself into an inflatable, whether it’s a wipeout-style challenge or jousting in giant padded suits of armor,” Fashimpaur said. “Yet when everyone is having a good time on some ridiculously fun obstacles, it’s easier for students to join in on the fun.”

Fashimpaur explained how initially hesitant freshmen quickly joined in after seniors began racing around on bouncy horses at last year’s aWake All Night.

Fashimpaur recognizes better than anyone the meaning of aWake All Night as an event that gives students a sense of home on campus.

Over 1,000 students participated in the event.

“Literally everyone comes, from freshmen to seniors,” Fashimpaur said.

The popularity of aWake All Night is not difficult to spot. It is nearly impossible not to be happy when you are building a stuff-a-bear, hunting for golden bricks to increase your chance of winning a prize basket or racing around on inflatable obstacles.

The annual celebration in Benson has come to symbolize the mission of Student Union at its core: students planning engaging and inclusive events for other students, ultimately building a greater sense of campus community.

In a way, Fashimpaur was destined to orchestrate the theme and logistics of aWake All Night.

She first heard of the event while she was only a high school sophomore because her older sister was involved in Student Union and responsible for planning the event four years ago. When she came to Wake Forest in 2014, Jaime immediately joined Student Union and brought her artistic prowess, organizational skills and enthusiasm to the team.

Senior Karli Schlachman, a director of live music for Student Union, supplemented aWake all night with the time-honored tradition of “Late Night Open Mic Night.”

Affectionately nicknamed LNOM, the event happened in Shorty’s at 9 p.m. that night.

She describes LNOM as a way for students to showcase their talents in front of their fellow classmates, building on the celebration and sense of community fostered by aWake All Night.

“It was a night full of music, comedy, poetry, good food and good company,” Schlachman said.

Student Union’s efforts to build community will continue throughout the fall and spring semesters as a wealth of events are currently planned or are in the works.

Over 100 students have attended the Friday films, which occur weekly at 8 p.m. in Pugh Auditorium. Tuesday Trivia, another beloved tradition with lucrative prizes for winning teams, occurs biweekly at Shorty’s.

Fallfest, a smaller sister festival to Springfest, celebrates the transition to autumn and will bring together students, faculty and staff for a variety of food, games and fall activities on Friday, Oct. 14.

Finally, the last week of October features the annual Homecoming celebration, a week of festivities uniting the campus under our shared identity as Demon Deacons.

On the horizon remain the annual concert, Lighting of the Quad, a variety of speakers, a Wake Forest birthday bash and other activities ranging from cultural events to sports challenges.

Fashimpaur sums up the vast array of activities best: “It’s all about students doing things for their fellow students: building a sense of community and making this campus feel like home for every student.”

Taco chain to open location near Innovation Quarter

Crafted: The Art of the Taco, a highly popular Greensboro taco joint, is set to open at 527 N. Liberty Street, less than half a mile from the Innovation Quarter.

The brick building with sweeping views of the Innovation Quarter used to be vacant, just like many of the other buildings that line Liberty Street.

This restaurant marks a key renovation for the area. Liberty Street is one block closer to the Innovation Quarter than Trade Street which has been heavily developed in recent years and is home to multiple art galleries and restaurants.

The spacious building is right across the street from Top Tier CrossFit and a yoga gallery and has its own small parking lot with about 14 spaces. It is bordered by an open, grassy lot and is visible from Winston Factory Lofts.

Head chef Kris Fuller, who was featured on Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen,” said that she has been wanting to expand her Greensboro restaurant into Winston-Salem for the past two or three years.

When you’re choosing what to have for breakfast, think about the energy your body needs for a productive day. Mindful living applies to all areas of life and can positively affect us in numerous ways.

Stress is a reality of modern life, and if we don’t take steps to manage it, multiple components of our health can decline. In the television series “Parks and Recreation,” some of the characters designate one day each year to “treat yo self” in which they do any and all activities they enjoy. Jam-packing everything you love into one day each year is unrealistic, but the mindset of treating yourself in little ways throughout the week can be beneficial to maintaining balance in your life and improving your wellbeing.

Sometimes exercising can seem like another activity you have to squeeze into your schedule, but it doesn’t have to be a hassle if it’s something you look forward to. If you find a workout that is fun, you can burn calories and relieve stress among many other benefits to your physical and mental health. There are lots of fitness classes on campus like Zumba, spin and yoga that are great options, or you can take a scenic jog on the Reynolda Trail or around campus — just do a workout that you enjoy.

Oftentimes, the most underutilized tool for college students is sleep. It’s obvious; yet, so many of us think a few extra shots of espresso in our coffee are enough to make it through the day. Unless you have a huge paper or exam due in the next few days, set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it. If you prioritize getting quality sleep most nights, your days will be much better. You’ll thank yourself now and later.

Calculus You’re the kind of person who would force your counselor to let you take 18 credit hours as a first-semester freshman and then promptly fail them. However, you still like to maintain your sense of superiority at all times.

You have disdain for the less ambitious; though, you’re constantly trying to cover up the fact that you aren’t as special as you seem. You’re thoroughly in love with yourself and have a reputation for being impossible to conquer. Self-image is so important to you that if you accidentally “like” someone’s Instagram post from 400 weeks ago, you’ll never leave your house again. If you were a food, you’d be mediocre foie gras. You have an aura of mystique, but beneath the surface, you’re basically just a hotdog.

Geometry Most people diligently avoid you because you’re the definition of “extra.” Everyone forgets about you, because the other branches of mathematics are far superior. Your inferiority complex may contribute to your obnoxiousness, but no one feels bad about it because your personality never changes. Your relationship status on Facebook is “It’s complicated” even though you’ve never been in any

type of relationship at all. It’s no big surprise, because no one needs to know what a “dodecahedron” is to function in society.

Statistics Let’s face it: stats usually feels more like an art or English class rather than math. If you find standard deviations with great enthusiasm, you’re probably a hipster millennial and strongly against the “mainstream.” You prefer to wear earth tones and flannel, and you only shop at Whole Foods and REI. You post pictures on Instagram of artsy shadows and hiking trails. Don’t worry, you’re far off in the tail of the bell curve, so you don’t need to try so hard.

Algebra To people who don’t know you, you may seem simple and innocent, but to your closest friends you’re the life and soul of the party. Although your gregarious personality explains why you have so many friends, you sometimes do foolish things to impress them. T.V. Review| American Horror Story

New season of “American Horror Story” thrills “AHS: My Roanoke Nightmare” plays on fears and phobias against a colonial background

BY RAVEN MCCORKLE Staff Writer mccorc16@wfu.edu As a huge fan of FX’s hit T.V. show, “American Horror Story,” I was beyond excited for the premiere of the sixth season, “My Roanoke Nightmare,” released on Sept. 14.

Starring a cast of new and old faces — including veterans Lily Rabe and Sarah Paulson and new cast members Andre Holland and Cuba Gooding Jr. — the mystery of this year’s theme of the horror show was finally revealed: the lost colony of Roanoke, North Carolina.

The show’s creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, threw viewers for a loop with the documentary-style of this year’s season; the show is almost a show inside of a show. It is composed of dramatic “reenactments” and accounts of those events which is a change from the usual episodic plot of the show.

“American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare” begins with a young couple, Shelby and Matt, who move from Los Angeles to North Carolina after Matt ends up in the hospital due to local gang initiations. They find a great deal on a large

farmhouse and the surrounding land after winning a bid against a few locals.

The house, however, is not what it seems to be, as it never is in the land of “American Horror Story.” Ever seen the first season, “Murder House”? Of course, something was going to happen.

After unusual occurrences, such as witnessing human sacrifices, seeing people who aren’t there and Matt’s niece talking to an “imaginary friend” who speaks of killing the family, Matt and Shelby decide it’s time to leave — if only things were that easy.

Of course, since the young couple spent their entire savings on the house, the bank will not refund them.

The second episode leaves viewers with a cliffhanger. After Matt’s niece goes missing, the young couple and Matt’s sister, Lee, played by Angela Bassett, search for the young girl, only to find her jacket at the top of a tall tree, blowing in the wind.

Shelby and Matt also find a home video of the previous owner of the house. He talks about the weird nature of the house, finding blood everywhere and the nurses who turned the house into a retirement home — only to murder the elderly for fun. The distraught man’s recollection of the nurses confirms Matt’s “dreams,” which revolve around the first murder.

Known for its disturbing plots, “American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare” seems to be just what the fanbase loves.

Complete with dark undertones — a trademark of the series — suspense and the element of fear and phobias, Murphy and Falchuk scare viewers into continuing to watch the series.

Of course, viewers still aren’t sure about the storyline; why are teeth falling from the ceiling? What’s with the creepy pig squeals? And why the disturbing reenactment of the murderous nurses, two sisters who kill victims whose first names spell out “M-U-R-D-E-R”?

The first two episodes also show glimpses of Kathy Bates, the fan pick for any role about a scorned woman who loves to kill people.

Dressed in colonial clothing, Bates seems to hint to viewers about the relationship between the young couple and the mystery revolving around the lost colony.

Overall, the first two episodes of “American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare” proved to be equally disturbing and mysterious as seasons past.

Take a chance on a digital romance For busy millennials, dating apps could mean true love

As a full-time wedding photographer, Hinson relishes in capturing young couples’ unique love stories on camera.

Of the 26 weddings scheduled for Hinson to shoot this season, over half of the couples began their journey with the click of a mouse. According to “Vanity Fair,” a recent report showed nearly 100 million Americans currently use online dating services. No longer taboo, today online dating accounts for one in every five new relationships and one in every six marriages.

“In terms of using online dating to actually find a long-term relationship, it’s certainly not a miracle cure,” says Dr. Phillip Bratten, a practicing clinical psychologist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“But it has potential to match someone up with his or her lifelong partner.”

Since 2013, the amount of 18-to-24-year-olds who signed up for online dating services has almost tripled from 10 percent to 27 percent.

The increased prevalence of online dating has lessened the negative stigma, and the majority of millennial Americans consider online dating as a credible method to meet someone new.

“The couples I work with are always excited to share with me that they met online,” Hinson said.

“Two years ago, I would have assumed that people would find me desperate for meeting my husband online. Now, more people my age are doing it, and views have completely changed.”

A survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics determined Americans spend an average of 8.7 hours at work each day, leaving little time and energy for drinks with a handsome stranger in the evening.

Alternatively, online dating users are able to chat with multiple partners at once from the comfort of their own bed. Donning a robe and fuzzy slippers, users spend an average of 22 minutes each time he or she logs onto a preferred online dating site, ultimately investing an average of 12 hours a week engaged in online dating activity.

Whether you’re at a spin class, grabbing your morning bagel and

schmear or clocking in another day at work, routine schedules often limit varied interactions. Because you see similar faces on a daily basis, it takes more effort to go outside of your comfort zone to meet someone new. Proximity to others limits dating pools, and social networking has made it easier than ever to connect with individuals living miles away.

In a technology age, millennials take refuge behind iPhone screens rather than meeting someone in a local coffee shop. If a match does decide to meet, studies show it takes men only 15 minutes to decide if he’s interested. A woman, however, needs an average of one hour to ponder whether she would like to pursue a relationship. The cyber “prescreening” of partners alleviates the pick-up line jitters that previous generations painfully endured. Anonymity emboldens users to speak their mind, even if they wouldn’t have the same confidence in person.

“With online dating, there’s generally a low expectation in a first meeting,” Bratten said. “It lowers the risk and pain of rejection. That’s a clear phenomena in relationship seeking; no one wants to put themselves out there and risk rejection.”

Crossing campus with heads bowed, fingers flying and eyes glued to their phone screens, college students are constantly plugged into their favorite social networks. Each year new online dating websites and smartphone apps are introduced to the market with the hopes of playing Cupid to the 44 percent of single Americans searching for their soul mate.

But hopeless romantics look no further. Companies like CoffeeMeetsBagel, okCupid and Bumble use different interfaces and algorithms to simplify the process.

Whether

you prefer filling out a 400-question survey on eHarmony or simply enjoy swiping through myriad profiles pictures, online dating is more versatile than ever.

“As online dating grows in popularity, companies will continue to develop better algorithms and fine tune their systems to satisfy their clientele,” Bratten says.

Despite the revolution of online dating, Tinder still combats a negative stigma of being a “hookup app.” “Vanity Fair” refers to this loss of intimacy as the “Dating Apocalypse.” The large sample size has contributed to an apathetic approach to dating as users mindlessly swipe through profiles.

A longstanding hookup culture has merged with dating apps, which — according to “Vanity Fair” — have acted “like a wayward meteor on the now dinosaur-like rituals of courtship.” Tinder dates, or “Tinderellas,” come a dime a dozen, and romantic gestures are replaced with invitations to late night rendezvous.

“Some of the research shows that both men and women use online dating for short-term relationships,” Bratten says. “Although it’s not true in all cases, women typically — even in short-term relationships — are evaluating the potential for longterm relationships. Millennials didn’t invent casual sex. That’s been a phenomenon for years. What is different is the modality for putting these sexual encounters in place.”

The reality? Dating is hard. It’s hard for anyone.

Chained by fears of heartbreak and choked by our own insecurity, it’s no wonder that millennial men and women turn to technology to find Mr. or Mrs. Right.

With unlimited options, millennials are hesitant to commit to just one person. Plagued with the inevitable desire for something more, users constantly search for something “better.”

Everyone is looking for the next best thing, which makes settling down scary and intimidating. In the frenzy of online dating, we tend to forget that behind every profile picture is a real living, breathing, feeling person that is just as scared as we are.

The match you just made could be your soul mate.

Unconventional?

Sure, but since when are great love stories conventional.

He or she could be the reason you smile every morning and sleep peacefully at night.
