ear Class of 2017,

You have made it to Wake Forest! Congratulations. You are about to embark on an unforgettable journey.

It feels like just yesterday I was moving into my new home in Babcock. Although I do not miss the communal bathrooms, there is something special about your first year of college.

You are introduced to an entirely new environment and the possibilities seem endless. Believe it or not many of the unfamiliar faces you meet during these first few weeks will become the same people you wave to on the Quad on your way to class. This will be your home before you know it.

Looking back now, I realize how much I have grown since freshman year.

I took classes that scared me, I spent three amazing months in Europe and I survived the daunting process of rushing a sorority. Most importantly I have had the opportunity to lead the student newspaper staff. And let me tell you, it has been quite the experience.

This is what you will find at Wake Forest. Opportunities you never dreamed of having and people who will open your mind to new ideas.

Here is my advice: Savor the late night discussions with peers while you are “studying,” and if you are ever lucky enough to be invited to a faculty member’s home for dinner, go. Never again will you live in a community as special as Wake.

And that is what Wake Forest really is. Some may call it a ‘bubble’ but it is a community of Deacons.

so empty. My 20 minute meeting turned into an hour long walk around the Quad, up to the new dorms and back down to South campus. Although there was no one around, I remembered some of my favorite moments on campus from the past three years.

I thought of my late nights in the Old Gold & Black office in Benson and spring days on the patio above the Pit studying before class. I remembered laughing and listening to country music on a bench behind Luter with friends and rolling the Quad for the very first time.

And I remembered my first visit to Wake when I stood on Hearn Plaza and told my mom that this is where I wanted to go to college, this would be my home.

Now that we have experienced the Forest for a few years, the OGB staff would like to pass along a few tips to you as you begin your own Wake Forest journeys.

This publication is a guide to college life from the people who know it best — the students. It is everything the brochures won’t tell you and so much more.

Consider the thoughtful advice from “campus celebrities” on pages 12 and 13 and learn where to eat in Winston-Salem on page 17. Read about Greek life on page 18 and peruse the fall football schedule on 10.

Keep this newspaper handy throughout the fall because you never know when you will need a quick hangover cure or need to check something off of your bucket list on page 23.

So breathe in the Magnolia trees and soak in the sunsets behind Wake Chapel because these four years will be over before you know it.

What the brochures don’t tell you...

A student’s perspective of what waits behind the shrouded curtain of the university advertising.

The shiny gloss covers have been berating you for the past several years telling you all the reasons why you should attend their school. No longer are you subject to all the statistics, picture perfect students and moving testimonials that fill those booklets — you have made your decision and you have arrived. But now its time to pull back the shiny gold and black curtain and see what is really waiting for you over the next four years.

Wake boasts great academics and excellent opportunities for extracurricular involvement giving license to the claim as one of the top 30 national universities.

Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the university puts some spin on many of its selling points for greater prospective student appeal.

First, the “convenient” shuttle service that “everyone uses” is pretty much kept in business by two groups: upperclassmen coming to campus for class and freshman returning from the parking lot after a late night cookout run. Second, very few individuals actually wear the tie-dye nation shirts to sporting events any more (if they even go at all).

Also, even though its on every website and in every pamphlet, I have yet to see a professor roll a chalk board out onto the quad for an outdoor class. And last of the little details, although she is quoted everywhere you look on this campus, the likelihood you will see Maya Angelou much less take a class from her is about as likely as the Deacs making it to the Final Four of the NCAA basketball tournament.

Now for some of the larger deceits that the brochures sold you. Any brochure that you picked up on this campus boasts pictures of

students of every racial and ethnic background from around the world, portraying a university filled with diversity. Who knows, maybe we do have students from that many varied backgrounds. And the university does deserve some credit for their efforts to increase the number of students from diverse backgrounds.

However, you will soon realize the percentage of students that are truly diverse from one another is very small. So if you came to Wake looking for a university colored with the cultures of the world, then you probably want to start perusing through the transfer applications.

What about social life? The university advertises being located in the “vibrant” city of Winston-Salem. The truth is you’ll be lucky to find much worth doing outside the university’s “bubble”, particularly while you’re under 21.

And what of that age-old question all the students ask on the tours: does greek life dominate campus life? The answer: kind of. The university advertises that greek life is a welcome part of an all-around vivacious campus life community and it’s true there are many different student organizations with wonderful social, academic and volunteer opportunities.

However, if you are looking to go out with your friends Wednesday through Saturday, your best bet for a social scene with a pulse is heading over to the nearest frat lounge that is blaring with music and overflowing with people.

So do all these faults and exaggerations mean you wasted your college experience coming to this university? Of course not, most of you will love it here, discover great friends, take fascinating courses and have a fantastic fouryear experience ... just don’t expect the perfect utopia you thought you were coming to.

Learn to beat the hangover blues Make the best of a bad situation by eating plenty of healthy foods and drinking water after a long night

The lethal combination of sugary punch with a few different kinds of liquor poured into coolers almost guarantees a brutal hangover the morning after a great night out, even if you were responsible and stayed within your limits. The reality of many mornings on the weekend is bleak — a raging headache and a mountain of work anxiously waiting for you.

There are two ways to cope with hangovers — succumb or rally. I’ve heard of a third way that encourages drinking as soon as you wake up, but please don’t follow that advice.

Succumbing to the hangover means that you don’t turn your lights on or leave your bed until 5 p.m. It means sitting in bed either watching Netflix or trying to do homework, but constantly falling asleep or getting distracted. Don’t succumb; it only makes you more miserable.

Instead, rally against the hangover and defeat the misery. Let yourself sleep in a little bit (because who knows when you got in last night), but wake up at a reasonable time, allowing for naps later in the day if you’re still exhausted.

Speaking of exhaustion, Starbucks doesn’t open until 1 p.m. on Sundays, so don’t bank on some overpriced caffeine to wake

you up. Even if you’re just planning to study all day, please be hygienic. Wash your feet really well, perhaps with some bleach because Wake is infamous for the brown sludge that coats the floor of every fraternity lounge and basement.

Fill up a big water bottle and try to finish and refill it every hour.

It’s a fun game to play while you’re studying in the library — or is that just me?

Also, be sure to eat real food that will fill you up.

Take a shower, brush your teeth, but for the love of Sundays don’t put on makeup or acceptable clothing. The weekends are the only time you’ll ever see Wake’s campus covered with sweatpants and T-shirts.

Tailgates are the bright and shiny exception.

The most important piece of advice I can give you is to drink more water than you ever thought possible.

Try to avoid sugary foods, because they could worsen your headache and stomachache.

Eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water will help you recover from the night before and prepare you for the upcoming day, whether that involves studying, tailgating or going out again later that night.

Once you’ve put some food and water in your system, go to the gym or get your heart rate up one way or the other. Technically speaking, it’s physiologically impossible to “sweat out” toxins from your body.

Regardless, exercising will not only make your body feel so much better but it will also take your mind of your workload and your poor decision making from the night before.

While we’re on the topic of questionable decisions, let me just say that while moral hangovers often accompany physical hangovers, they’re not quite as easy to cure.

If you offended a friend, apologize as soon as possible. If you hooked up with an ex, figure out how you can avoid it in the future. If you and your friend got into a screaming match with some sorority girls and gave them a fake name when they threatened to blacklist you, brush it off.

Crazy nights happen, y’all. All you can do is wake up the next morning, bleach the frat sludge off your feet, and move forward … towards a grande iced coffee from Starbucks.

Avoid putting off laundry with these tips Learn the best times to do your laundry and try this laundry room etiquette

As mind numbing a process as doing laundry may be, there’s actually a fair amount of strategy involved now that you’re living dorm life. Not a strategy for doing the laundry itself, just for finding a time to do it when there are actually washers and dryers available to use.

Whether you don’t mind doing your own laundry or find it to be one of the most pain-staking, awful experiences one can endure, it’s best to try and make the process as painless as possible.

Believe me, there’s nothing worse than dragging yourself down into the depths of your dorm with a sack of dirty clothes on your back just to find that every last washer is being used for the next 45 minutes.

But before I even start talking about the ideal blocks of time to do your wash, let’s just get one thing perfectly clear: do your laundry. It’s not that complicated, and it’s really not that difficult. (If you’re really too lazy or too busy to do it yourself, Wake’s laundry service called WakeWash is always an option).

Not doing your laundry will make you your roommate’s worst enemy. Letting your unwashed reeking clothes pile up in your closet for weeks on end is not something you will ever be forgiven for.

The one good thing about this situation is that the washers and dryers are free in all Wake Forest dorms, so you don’t have to worry about collecting a pocketful of quarters just to keep yourself from having to wear that same pair of underwear for the third day in a row.

Be sure to keep plenty of soap in your room; the new soap pods are convenient for space, but liquid soap works just as well.

As far as timing goes, consider anywhere between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. rush hour. It’s highly doubtful that you’ll be able to waltz into one of the laundry

rooms and find yourself an open washer during this time period.

Consider the nights before breaks out too, everyone needs clean clothes to bring home to impress mom. The best time slots are early in the morning when people are either sleeping or in class, early afternoon when people are either at lunch or in class and late evening when things have quieted down. Usually you’ll be able to find a free washer during one of these blocks.

You can also sign up to receive texts when your laundry is done, just be sure to check out the phone instructions posted near the machines in the laundry rooms. Try to get your clothes out on time; if you don’t, someone else will gladly do it for you, leaving your clothes on top of one of the machines or even on the floor.

Overall, the laundry process at Wake Forest really isn’t all that bad. As long as you’re considerate and get your wash done quickly (and as long as two of the three dryers in your half of the building don’t break down and go weeks without being fixed, speaking from personal experience), you shouldn’t run into any problems.

The best places to study on campus To manage your workload, find a few spots to escape the chaos on campus to study and relax

Once October rolls around and all of your classes have papers due and tests on the same day, you’ll understand the importance of having multiple study spots.

The university library, commonly known as ZSR, fills up faster than any spot on campus on a Sunday afternoon. And during exam time … well don’t even think about it. So make sure you check out these spots to survive your first semester of studying at Wake Forest.

ZSR Study Rooms – The only surefire way to beat the daily rush at ZSR is to reserve a study room with your friends or classmates. They are a great place to work on group projects and presentations and offer plenty of space. Be careful, because the rooms run out quickly and can only be held for two hours (unless of course each person in your group reserves it separately).

Carswell ­­- This academic building has some great classrooms that you can

utilize in a variety of ways. Most have long tables that cover the entire length of the room. Each seat has an outlet and most rooms have large whiteboards.

This makes Carswell great for group projects as well, as long as you and your friends get to the room first.

The only problem with Carswell is that the rooms are usually locked at night. Often you just have to hope that someone used the room before you and left it open.

Tribble – Tribble, located across from Benson and right next to the library, has a ton of small classroom spaces available.

Most classes held in Tribble are smaller and discussion based, so it doesn’t have the same rigid structure as a building like Carswell. Many of the rooms have a haphazard collection of chairs and tables.

Don’t expect each person to have their own wall outlet either.

Also, if you’re feeling adventurous you can try to find the room that looks like it’s straight out of Harry Potter.

The nice thing about Tribble though is that because the classrooms are smaller, a group could easily claim an entire room as its own.

In Carswell it’s much harder for a group of five to justify taking up an entire space meant for 50-plus students.

Moreover, most of the building is

unlocked 24/7, which opens up more quiet study space for those last-minute all-nighters.

Campus Grounds – The alternative to Starbucks on the university campus serves as a solid study spot for people who don’t mind a good deal of background noise.

A lot of students find the quiet atmosphere in the library stressful and find the noise of a coffee shop more relaxing.

It ultimately depends on your personality and what particular homework you are doing that day.

Campus Grounds is probably not the best to go to read a dense textbook, but can be great if you need to crank out a last-minute paper.

Law School Library – Located in the Worrell Professional Center just past the main entrance to campus, the law school library could be described as a hidden gem.

If you’re coming from South Hall then it is certainly a bit of hike but the long walk could easily be worth it on a busy study day.

This is the place to go if you have a ton of reading and like complete silence while you work. However, if you try to work on group projects there, you’ll most likely face some angry graduate students.

Dealing with six types of roommates Understand the various roommate archetypes that you’ll come across on your freshman hall

The Bedroom Hobbit First off, I’m sorry. This is probably the worst type of roommate that you can have.

Nothing is worse than a roommate that does not leave the room, sometimes you just want to have five minutes in the room to yourself, but with a “bedroom hobbit” it is difficult.

If they are studying or watching TV while you are trying to go to bed, simply ask them to move to the lounge. If you have this type of roommate, introduce them to your new friends, ask them to come out with you and encourage them to go to the student activity fair.

By now you have either met your roommate in person or thoroughly stalked them on Facebook. I warn you, your first impression — either good or bad — is probably correct. Your roommate will probably fall into one of the following categories or some combination of them.

When dealing with any type of roommate, communication is key. Be sure to establish the pathways of communication early and you will have a successful year living with your new roommate.

The Hostess with the Mostess Sometimes after a long day of class, you just want to go back to your room and relax.

But if your roommate always wants to host the party you may have trouble relaxing.

If this is the case, expect your room to be the gathering spot for social events, which will help your social life but can be taxing after a while. When dealing with this type of roommate, lay out ground rules and be vocal about what you want. On nights that you want to stay in and relax, just ask that he or she hosts the party elsewhere.

The Absentee Congratulations, this is probably the best type of roommate that you can have. My advice for dealing with “the absentee?”

Enjoy. If you have a problem with having an absentee roommate, you may be a clinger (see above).

The Clinger Some people expect their roommates to be their best friends. I want to tell you right now that this will probably not be the case. Give your roommate space. You do not always have to go to the Pit the same time that they do, sit in the ZSR together, join the same clubs or always go fratting together. Give each other space and it will make living in the same room much easier.

The Hygienically Questionable On the roommate survey everyone lies on the question: “Do you consider yourself to be neat?”

On move-in day discuss your expectations for cleanliness, that way many future arguments can be avoided. Pick a day of the week for tidying up the room together and if things get too slovenly remind them to clean up after themselves.

The Casanova / The Floozy For many new students, the first days of freshman year are a time for new (errr…) romances. When dealing with a roommate who is exploring their newfound freedom, set ground rules quickly.

No one wants to be sexiled every night.

If your roommate is dating someone from another school who comes to visit, give them their space but remind them that it is your room too.

Tractors: The hidden horror of the Forest Sometimes it takes a tractor to learn important lessons about life, friends, fraternities and alcohol

At this point, you probably think you’ve heard it all. All the precautions, warnings and horror stories about freshman year.

You’ve been told not to drink too much at fraternity parties and to make sure not to skip class. You’ve heard terrifying tales of the freshman 15 and the roommate from hell.

But this freshman year horror story is one that you probably haven’t heard before. So strap on your seat belts, kids, because this tale isn’t for the faint of heart; I’m here to tell you how NOT to get run over by a tractor.

By October of my freshman year I thought I had Wake all figured out. I was happily settled and one day I got an email invitation to a fraternity crush party … I was elated!

The crush party was rodeo themed so I donned my cowboy boots and a plaid button-down and boarded a bus with all of my friends.

About an hour later, we arrived at the ranch, and were greeted by horses, a swing band and the promise of hayrides later in the night.

The first hayride was ready to go and seconds later everyone raced over to climb up onto the giant wagon, which was being

pulled by an absolutely MASSIVE John Deer Tractor.

I decided to try and climb up the side since there was no way I was getting on through the rambunctious mob of people at the entrance.

After a serious struggle I finally managed to get myself up onto the side, but suddenly a girl fell back and knocked me right off. I hit the ground hard, and landed with one of my legs under the wagon, right as the hayride began to move.

My last memory is hearing a horrifying sound, which I later found out was my animalistic shriek as the hayride slowly ran over my left leg.

My body went into shock and I blacked out. I woke up hours later in the hospital with a series of IVs attached to me, and no feeling in my left leg.

Looking back now, I must have looked really great in a full leg brace and crutches while on some serious pain meds. The next few weeks were the most painful weeks of my life. My roommate had to help me dress and shower, and my friends brought me food because the short distance from Bostwick to the Pit was too much for me to handle.

I missed two weeks of classes because I was stuck in bed, so catching up was a nightmare, and when I finally did go back to class I realized just how unfriendly our campus is for handicapped people,

especially since I lived on the third floor of a dorm with no elevator.

Eventually my leg healed, and today the only indication of my ordeal are two scars and some bruising that I am told will never go away.

But to this day, I still occasionally have people come up to me and say “Oh my God, you’re Tractor Girl!”, or my personal favorite, “I heard it ran over your face!”

As I enter my senior year this freshman incident seems like it was forever ago, but I share it with you now because of a few important lessons it helped me learn.

First of all, it showed me who my real friends are, and I am forever grateful to

my freshman year roommate and friends who helped clothe, bathe, feed and comfort me during this horrible time.

Secondly, it showed me the importance of NEVER going near any mixture of motorized vehicles, college kids and alcohol.

And finally, it gave me one hell of a story to tell.

I wish you all the best on your exciting first year at Wake, and remember, watch out for tractors.

Relieving stress leads to success Include these helpful tips in your daily routine to keep yourself from getting stressed.

You wake up sweating with your heart pounding from that horrible dream again.

You walked into your economics exam and read through the test but to your horror,

you knew absolutely none of the answers. It is the classic college nightmare.

I was way too worried about my grades during my first year at Wake. I felt guilty when I wasn’t in the library and allowed myself to get all worked up about homework. Thankfully by sophomore year I realized that there is a way to succeed at Wake without all of the stress. Now it really takes a killer finals week to stress me out.

1. Yoga. Seriously take up yoga if you haven’t already (boys, you too!) Taking 15 minutes out of your day to stretch and

relax your mind will loosen those tense muscles from studying in the library all day. You don’t even need to buy a mat or yoga passes, get into the downward dog position in your dorm room or in the middle of the atrium if need be, we won’t judge you!

2. Drink at least 80 ounces of water a day. Carry around a camelbak water bottle and keep track of how many times you are filling it up. Dehydration, stress and dorm rooms are a lethal trio — do your best to avoid getting sick.

3. Take breaks. I know it seems counterintuitive to walk away from the calculus book when you still have 40 practice problems to go, but do it. If you leave the ZSR to take a five minute walk outside to refresh your mind and you will be more productive. Don’t make the library a place of torture. Bring some healthy snacks (hummus, veggies, fruit, granola bars) to keep you going.

4. Try not to talk with your friends about school work outside of the classroom.

Hanging out with your new friends should be a break from the homework grind. If you spend your whole Pit sit complaining about the six page paper you have to write, it will just stress you out more and annoy everyone around you. We all have a lot of work, no need to compete.

5. Do something everyday that makes you happy. My roommate and I started painting after work this summer and even though the

canvases never turned out anywhere close to the examples we found on Pinterest, it was a great way to release the tension from sitting at a desk all day. If you have an important exam the next day, Skype your parents just to talk to your puppy.

You will feel better and it will remind you that this one test is not the end of the world.

When all else fails remind yourself that one way or another, the work will get done.

It’s what everyone wants to avoid, but only a few skilled people actually can. And no I am not talking about avoiding the inevitable sunburn during tailgate season.

Because that will happen.

But what doesn’t have to happen is the gaining of the dreaded “freshman 15.” For those that do not know, the freshman 15 is a national epidemic that strikes nearly every college campus.

If this idea scares you and your waistline, stick to these tactics and you may just keep that beach-bod you have been working for all summer long in tact.

1. Alcohol intake - Legal issues aside, it is extremely unhealthy to drink alcohol.

Beers are loaded with calories, and people mix sugary drinks with hard liquors.

Sugar gets stored in the body as fat, and it dehydrates you, which causes further fat gain.

In addition, alcohol slows down essential fat burning processes, and if you have more than a few drinks, it can halt fat burning processes for days.

2. Drink water - Buy a good water bottle that you can fill up throughout and carry around to class. Most health experts recommend drinking at least three liters

of water each day to ensure fat burning processes continue and to rid the body of toxins.

3. Sleep well - Inadequate sleep affects more than just your grades and your social life. It messes with your body too. Sleeping is the time of day that your body needs to repair itself, so if you do not sleep, your body cannot “digest” your workouts and burn fat or develop muscle.

4. Variety is the spice of life - Your body gets used to the same routines over and over again. So, while going on the elliptical with your BFF’s or going to bench and curl with the bros every day may burn some calories, it honestly will not do all that much.

Try exercises you haven’t done ever or in a while. Also, eat a variety of foods. If you are eating something every day, that is an issue, and your body will not react well to it.

5. No drunchies - One of the worst parts of drinking alcohol is the extremely unhealthy food that typically follows it.

The 3 a.m. call to Domino’s Pizza on a weekend night is not a good way to keep those pounds off.

After drinking, your body will not be able to break down the fat, and this food will turn straight into fat.

6. Try to eliminate wheat and sugars Sugar turns into fat. So, whether it is a bag of skittles or a piece of bread (especially white), it is probably going to turn into fat.

If staying trim is a priority, do your best to cut or at least minimize these from your diet.

7. Breakfast of course - This is your most important meal of the day, so make it count. Skipping breakfast is a terrible idea because your body needs something to kick-start its metabolism. If you don’t want to wake up super early and go to the Pit, stash some food in your room for a 10-minute breakfast.

I eat slices of meat (turkey, roast beef and chicken), nuts, green tea and fresh fruit every morning.

8. Don’t stress - While this is extremely tough to do, avoiding stress can be very beneficial health-wise. Stress inhibits your body’s ability to burn fat, so even if you are doing everything else right but you’re stressing out, you may see love handles when you look in the mirror.

I take magnesium daily to calm my body and decrease its cortisol. Also, take deep breaths and remember that Work Forest is manageable with the right attitude.

Follow your interests to your major Don’t fret about choosing your major. With these tips you’ll be on the right track for your future.

Now that you’ve made the big decision and arrived at the Forest you can finally sit back and enjoy the next four years peacefully, right? Well, sort of.

You still have to determine the field of study you’ll major in, which will likely determine many aspects of your future life.

Don’t worry though; it’s not as scary of an undertaking as it sounds. But here are a few tips to help make the process a little smoother.

1. Try classes in a variety of departments. Not only will this help you knock out your divisional requirements, but it will also let you experience different areas of study. And who knows, you may discover you have an interest in a field you never considered.

2. Don’t freak out if one person on your hall declares their major during their freshman year.

Many of you want to declare as soon as possible, but for most of you that won’t be until your second semester sophomore year and that’s OK. Enjoy your first year, get your divisionals out of the way and learn to manage the college workload. Trust me, there will be plenty of time to take numerous classes in your selected field of study later.

3. Get to know professors in the departments that you may want to study. You will most likely take classes with most of the professors in the department and they can tell you more

about what the department and major are like.

They can also tell you about what a degree in their field could lead to in terms of a career. Plus, the more professors you know, the more likely you’ll know whom to choose as an advisor.

4. Use your extracurricular interests to help guide you in your major selection. This will help you determine what you’re passionate about.

(For example, I would have never dreamt of entering the journalism program but my time at the OGB showed me it is something I am interested in studying.)

Moreover, the advisors for your organizations can also offer some insight into what areas of study would help in pointing you towards a career path that relates to your extracurricular interests.

5. Use the Offices of Academic Advising and Personal & Career Development. Don’t be afraid to set up appointments with these offices, they have tons of staff and resources that will help you determine what academic and career path is best for you. Have your resume reviewed or set up a mock interview in his office.

The bottom line is don’t worry. There is plenty of time to figure out what you will major in and numerous resources on campus to help you to determine your passions and interests.

Be Careful with Multimedia This list wouldn’t be complete without addressing the use of gadgets in class. Be it cell phones, laptops or even Kindles, keep in mind that the moment you pull one of them out, your professor is immediately aware that you’re now less focused on his or her lecture. Concerning the use of phones in class, printmaking professor David Faber asks, “How would you feel if you were trying to tell your best friends something you thought was really important or interesting, and right in the middle of your conversation, they pull out their cell phones and start ignoring you?” Professors differ on their policies with electronic note-taking devices, so make sure you know what’s up from the word go.

Learn the ins and outs of classy tailgating Whether you’re a die hard Deacon fan or not, football season means lots of tailgating. Get ready for the first big game with these tips from a pro.

It’s game day folks. This is no ordinary day on the Wake Forest campus. We may not be the best at sports (right now), but we take our tailgating seriously.

Set up The tailgating set-up is convenient compared to other large universities. The school provides continuous transportation via shuttle bus to and from campus starting a few hours before the game.

The buses leave from the backside of Poteat and take students to the student entrance where student organizations have tents set up right next to the tennis courts by the stadium. All the students congregate by the tents for pre-football fun with drinks, music and food. So tent hopping is easy and there are plenty of people around for you to hopefully avoid last night’s hook up.

Festivities If you do plan on drinking, be aware of men and women in tennis sneakers. They could be part of Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). They are present to crack down on underage drinking and always show up at the fraternity tailgates. Be smart and do not walk around with solo cups.

Whether you are drinking or not, football games are an all-day affair, which requires a good amount of energy. If you plan on going out on Friday night, try not to make the same mistake I did on my first game day. Don’t party too much and put yourself at a disadvantage for the tailgate and football festivities. So unless you are really good at rallying, try to take it a little bit easier on Friday to save up for the fun on Saturday.

What to wear There is a bit of a dress code for these football events. Sundresses and cowboy boots or sandals tend to be the go-to for the ladies, while the boys have it easy with nice shorts matched with a button down or polo shirt. But wear whatever you want. This is an all day affair and you might as well be comfortable.

Warning: girls don’t wear heels. You will most likely be walking on grass during the tailgate. So unless you defy the basic laws of physics and your heels don’t sink in the grass, it probably isn’t a good idea to wear them.

Make sure you check the weather. Rain or shine the tailgate and game will go on.

Football season extends into the colder months. Stick with lots of layers of gold and black to keep you warm while supporting the Demon Deacons.

Unless it is thundering and lightning in which case they will make everyone go to the indoor tennis courts. Yes, this has happened. Bring a raincoat if there is a chance that things get wet.

Now what?

Being a new student at the tailgates can be a little awkward at first. Most freshmen are not friends with many upperclassmen and don’t have many friends in the fraternities yet. So which tent do you go to? Who do you hang out with?

My favorite thing to do is to hop around from tent to tent with a few friends and listen to the music they are playing and drink a couple of drinks. It helps if you are with a few friends, things won’t be so awkward. Eventually you will meet more people and you’ll get the hang of the environment and what (or where) is the most fun for you.

Tailgating is the best part of the football season. It fosters a sense of pride amongst students and brings everyone together to get ready for black and gold football.

Favorite Wake Forest Memory: My favorite Wake memory is the thought of moving into my freshman dorm room in Luter. In that moment, I had no idea that I’d meet my three best friends on that hall, I’d take classes and meet professors who would introduce me to my passion in politics and reporting and that the time I’d spend with truly amazing people having an absolute blast would cause me to love Wake Forest not only as a school, but as a home. On that freshman move-in day, my entire four years at Wake were still ahead of me ... it was all just beginning and in that moment, anything and everything was possible.

Advice: Don›t be too hard on yourself. Going to college and figuring out how you fit in is stressful. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Get to know as many people as you can. Give yourself at least a month before you even tentatively evaluate yourself and this new place. Don›t be afraid to ask questions of students, faculty and staff.

Favorite Wake Forest Tradition: I have many, including what happens during and after sporting events, but what comes to mind now is the Moravian Love Feast held in December right before exams.

Favorite Aspect of Wake Forest: I love this community because it holds in creative tension high expectations for performance and genuine acceptance and community. There are not many places in our world today that do that effectively.

Advice: The biggest piece of advice I can give freshmen is to step outside their comfort zone. Be ready to embrace change in all forms and take the initiative to try new things. You only get one freshman year so make the most of it while you can.

Favorite Professor: My favorite professor is Dr. David Hagy in the Music Department. I have never met a professor so passionate about the material he is teaching or so interested in his students’ learning and understanding of the content. David truly cares about each of his students and makes an effort to ensure that his students are having a good experience inside and outside of the classroom.

Looking to succeed against a staunch ACC Wake Forest continues to seek victories despite tough competition and loss of C.J. Harris,ChaseFischer

You might think of the South as obsessed with football (and you’re not far off with that assessment) but in the Atlantic Coast Conference, basketball reigns supreme.

In what is known as the top basketball conference in the country, Wake Forest is part of the Tobacco Road rivalry, one of the most historic rivalries, along with state rivals Duke, NC State and Carolina. But the Demon Deacon program has had some great moments of its own through the years, with well-known alumni Tim Duncan, Chris Paul and Josh Howard all representing the Old Gold and Black well in the NBA. Back in Winston-Salem, though, the recent years haven’t been quite as exciting. In a sport that is as cyclical as basketball, most collegiate programs will rise and fall through the years, and Wake Forest is no different. Although the past few seasons have arguably had more bad

than good, there is reason to believe that this year can be a step up for the Demon Deacons. A tough 201213 season saw Wake Forest finish a disappointing 13-18, going 6-12 in conference play, but despite the negative numbers, there were more than a few highlights. In particular, the defeat of a top-ranked Miami at home, giving many seniors their last chance to storm the court.

The makeup of the team itself is relatively the same, graduating only CJ Harris and seeing Chase Fischer transfer. Returning for his senior year, forward Travis McKie looks to anchor and lead the young team to better standings.

While the youth of this team may have given cause for concern last year, there is some good news. That McKie strong class of freshman last year has gained valuable game experience, and as they begin their sophomore seasons, that playing time will be a huge help going forward.

Devin Thomas, Codi MillerMcIntyre and Arnaud Adala Moto already made their presence known on the court, and despite being

young, the three should be able to play a big role in the team’s plans this season. With the addition of the new members Syracuse, Notre Dame and Pitt, the ACC cemented its reputation as a basketball-first conference, and game play just got a whole lot harder. The competition was already tough, with five ACC teams qualifying for the NCAA tournament, but all three of the new kids on the block also played in March Madness, with Syracuse reaching the Final Four.

Louisville, 2013 champion is also set to join the ACC on July 1, 2014, with Maryland departing for the Big East, meaning that the competition will ramp up to another level next year. Watching an ACC basketball game this year means the action will be a lot more exciting – and a lot more challenging for the Demon Deacons.

Whether you know the game of basketball inside and out or you don’t know the difference between a free throw and a field goal, there is still a way for you to get involved to support your Deacs. Join the Screamin’ Demons, throw on your black and yellow tie-dye shirt and pack the Joel as part of the sixth man.

Keeping the ‘Fresh’ in ‘Freshman’ How to practice good hygiene at your home away from home

Dear freshman (or first-year student, as we’ve been advised to call you to make you feel more welcome), Moving to college is a new chapter in your life that means a lot of things. In your mind, you’re thinking that you’re finally big, bad and in charge with no authority figures watching your every move (for the most part). Yes, now you’re I-N-D-E-P-EN-D-E-N-T, but do you know what that means?

Depending on how you were raised, for instance, you either no longer

have someone always nagging you to keep your room in order and to do your laundry, or you no longer have someone doing all those things for you. Regardless, now it’s up to you to keep your life, your studies and, especially, your hygiene and personal space in order. Follow these simple rule so that your first year at Wake doesn’t stink, literally.

crusty cereal bowls and stained coffee mugs staring them in the face. Second, if you’re using a communal kitchen sink, no one’s going to be glad about having to move around your dirty baking trays and Ramen noodle-scented pots just to use the stove.

Moreover, you don’t want to invite the entire cast of A Bug’s Life into your room or kitchen.

Wash Your Sheets.

Sounds simple enough, but I cannot emphasize this point enough. College life gets busy and moves quickly. It’s easy to let academic and social commitments obscure basic yet necessary tasks such as this. If you think about all the different sorts of debris, food and, in some cases, people you’ll bring into your bed, you’ll think twice before you let your sheets go unwashed for longer than two weeks.

Wash Your Shoes I promise I don’t have a foot fetish, but if you decide to go out to parties, you’re going to have at least one pair of shoes designated to partying, especially if you rush a Greek fraternity or sorority. You’ll soon learn why.

Despite the fact that they’re just going to get dirty again each weekend, your shoes are not to be worn lightly. They’ll track more than just dirt during their use, and you don’t want to be responsible for that funny smell in your room. It’s just a matter of remembering to throw your Chucks in the laundry pile, too.

Never Leave Your Dishes Unwashed This can seem difficult with little time to spare most days, but there are many consequences for procrastinating on your chores. Avoid Walking Barefoot in Dorms.

This advice may seem a little extreme, but consider how many people with whom you’re sharing your dorm and how much filth gets carried from nature and from fraternity basements as well as miscellaneous fluids that you may or may not know have come in contact with the floors. Don’t even get me started with the showers. You’ve heard of MRSA, right? Campus custodians do a fine job of cleaning up after us, but even they can’t see everything. Protect your feet, grasshopper, and live long and prosper.

Clip Your Nails (Neatly).

Again, another “duh” piece of advice, right? Wrong. Everybody needs to make sure s/he keeps his or her phalange claws in check to prevent tracking dirty microscopic

creatures in them for too long. Remember, you use those hands to eat, to pray and to love. Also, make sure that when you clip them, they don’t end up doing somersaults onto your roommate’s side of the room.

Watch your nails like a hawk and make sure they all end up in your dustbin.

After a fun night out with your friends, or even a not-so-fun night in the library, it’s easy to want to collapse on your mattress without even bothering to take off your shoes, let alone your face paint. Resist the urge, woman! Your skin, and all the important stuff underneath, is too precious to disrespect. Even if all you’ve got at the time is some hand soap and a half-empty water bottle, you’d better close your eyes, pretend that stuff is Clean & Clear, and keep things under control.

Replace Your Underwear.

This final piece of advice goes without saying, and I shouldn’t need to explain why. Just know that doctors recommend replacing your underwear as frequently as every three months. This may not be as feasible for students for various reasons, but know that this doesn’t mean you should throw all your underwear out at once.

Stagger the panty-boxer diaspora on a basis that works for you. You don’t have to go to Abercrombie or wherever you youngin’s buy your underoos these days. Just buy a 6-pack from Walmart or Target like the rest of us plebeians, and save the Calvin Klein briefs and Victoria’s Secret lace for those special occasions.

And always remember, during your first year and beyond, to stay fresh and never funky.

I used to think of homesickness as a sort of incurable disease, something that was offensive and almost unforgivable. I thought missing home meant that I wasn’t enjoying myself where I was, whether that be a second grade slumber party, a two week summer camp or freshman year at Wake.

I was always afraid to tell people that I missed home because I was thought they would be offended and think that their company wasn’t good enough for me. I’ve always been the girl who gets homesick as soon as I leave my driveway.

This past year at Wake I had the best freshman experience that anyone could ever hope for. I met incredible people, took exciting classes, and discovered that Wake is absolutely perfect for me. But I still missed home desperately.

After a few months of being genuinely happy at Wake, I realized that missing home didn’t mean that I loved Wake any less. Once I figured that out, my homesickness got better, and I wasn’t constantly plagued by guilt. It also gave me the opportunity to start to truly consider Wake as my new home without worrying that doing so would lessen my connection to my home in Jacksonville.

The whole idea behind calling a place your home is that it is a place composed of things that you love and that comfort you. In Jacksonville, I have the house where my family and I have lived for all of my life. I have my parents and my dog, my best friend from high school and the massive river that cuts through the whole city. These are the things that I love about Jacksonville.

Once I started to consider Wake my home as well, I realized that I have things like that at school, too. I had my wonderful hall in the basement of Bostwick and my new friends. I have relatives nearby in Greensboro and my favorite spots in the library. I have Pit sits on Sunday mornings to recap the happenings of the weekend, the gorgeous fall leaves and spring flowers, and the beautiful campus. These are the things that I love about Wake.

I think the most important thing to realize is that missing home is totally normal and there is no vaccine to make you immune to it. There are things that help, like keeping pictures of the things you love about home in your room and calling your parents and friends every so often. The only thing that doesn’t help is to wallow.

Wallowing only makes you fixate on everything you miss even more and it means that you aren’t fully appreciating your time at Wake.

Instead, go enjoy one of the things that makes Wake home for you, whether that’s reading on the quad or spending time with your new friends. Don›t try to pretend that you’re not homesick, but instead acknowledge that you miss home while still making an effort to appreciate this wonderful place we call Mother So Dear.

Safety 101: Staying secure on campus Keep in mind the advice that your parents always told you when entering college

College may seem like a time to rebel without parents breathing down your necks. No nagging, no stern lectures, nothing. You are (relatively) free to do as you please. However, there are a few things your parents told you that you should keep in mind: Knowing Your Limits Whether you’re an inexperienced underage drinker or not, it’s easy to get caught up at a party. Keep tabs on how much and what you’re drinking.

Be sure to eat before you drink and stay hydrated with water. If you’re feeling too drunk, have a buddy take you home. In a potential emergency situation, don’t be afraid to go to Student Health Services.

The Buddy System Seriously, don’t go out alone. Having a friend on hand not only makes you feel less awkward at a party where you do not know anyone, but they can also

look out for your safety. Getting some unwanted attention from a girl or guy?

Perfect friend intervention time. Keep an eye on each other and you’ll be all set.

Comfortable Shoes Girls, this one’s for you. Going out?

No sense in wearing pumps or stilettos just to look cute. Cute shoes get ruined in frat sludge anyways. Buy a cheap pair of Keds, Converse or use old sandals.

Taking Shuttles Learn the shuttle times. The university runs a shuttle service that will take you around the campus and, more importantly, freshmen parking.

Getting to Know Your RA Your resident advisor is trained to assist or provide the resources in most safety situations you might find yourself in. If you don’t know where else to turn, consider looking to your RA. Emergency Number These will usually be given to you during Orientation. Do not blow them off.

You never know if you will need to call Campus Police (336-758-5911) or the PREPARE hotline (336-671-

7075). Keep them in your phone for all four years, just in case.

Awareness of Safe Areas Be aware of the locations of Blue Light emergency call boxes around campus.

They will immediately connect you to University Police Communications.

Additional emergency call boxes are located outside of buildings that will allow you to dial 911. University Police is headquartered in Davis Hall.

Designated Safe Zone areas provide a protected area for LGBTQ students and the Counseling Center provides crisis assistance.

Driving with Strangers This is the ONE rule you can break at Wake. Chances are, you don’t know the people picking you up for fraternity parties. These strangers are your best option to get there though.

Fraternities do not typically release the location of their parties for privacy reasons; therefore, you won’t know where to go.

Your parents also told you to not drunk drive, so consider this your personal designated driver. Don’t walk to or from a party, and don’t bother calling a cab. You might feel like a hooker waiting outside Collins for a car, but your safety is much more important.

Finding your niche in and out of the dorm Keep an open mind and be yourself as you join different organizations, and get to know your hallmates

Going to college starts a whirlwind of exciting changes to every college freshman’s life. But sometimes, new students can get lost in the excitement and over stimulation of freshmen orientation. Being thrown into a new environment with new people is exciting but without the comfort of your own room, friends and family, orientation and the first few weeks can be overwhelming.

The first thing you are bombarded with is your new roommate and their entire family trying to move both of you in. You will meet so many new people these first couple of weeks it will be impossible to remember everyone’s name. As you are meeting all these new people and trying your hardest to make a good impression and remembering the name of the person you are currently talking to, you are bombarded with tons of information about school, classes, majors, clubs, teams and other organizations.

Which groups should you join? Where do you want to invest your time? Where will you find people who share similar interests and goals as you?

The activities fair is a great place to start.

I made some of my best friends from

freshman year by getting involved in a couple of teams and organizations I was really interested in. Go with a couple people on your hall or in your student advisor group, or even by yourself. You will sign up for way too many groups, but you can always get off the listserves if you decide you don’t want to be involved later.

The important thing is to get involved in groups that you care about and want to invest your time in. With over 150 different student organizations on campus, you are bound to find a group of people that share the same interests as you.

If you want to get involved in journalism or broadcasting, Wake has everything from Wake TV, Wake Radio, Her Campus to the Old Gold & Black (thats us!).

Wake also has numerous faith organizations like Hillel Jewish Student Organization and the Baptist Student Union.

They even offer student organizations based on different academics. You can basically find a group associated with almost every major or minor at the university. The business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, is also a great option for those who would like to apply to the business school.

And don’t forget about the different political groups. You can join and get involved in the group of your choice from College Democrats or College Republicans to Young Americans for Liberty. You can even have your voice heard on campus with Student Government.

No matter where you are from or who you are, there will be a group you can join.

Freshmen dorms are also great for meeting people. All of them have some sort of lounge where you can sit and work on an assignment for one of your classes and socialize at the same time.

Soon enough, a part of your identity will be linked to the dorm that you live in.

Wake is great because so many of the classes are discussion based with small class

sizes, so it is basically like socializing in class and making friends while discussing something intellectual rather than that crazy party in a frat basement from the weekend before.

Make friends with the people that sit around you in class and start a study group that can meet up before tests and quizzes.

That way, you will have a whole group of new friends who share the same interests as you.

The Best Places in Winston to Use this list to guide your future off-campus dining options. These student favorites are sure to have taste buds hungry for more.

After two years at Wake Forest, I believe I’ve developed a quality sense of the best places to eat around town with regard to the best food mixed with the best bang for your buck and the best service.

Whether you want to eat five minutes from your dorm or travel a little more, look no further than the following list of my top restaurants in the WinstonSalem area as you begin to experience and explore eating out while attending Wake Forest.

Sushi Thai Wherever you go to school, travel, or stay for an extended period of time, you must find a Chinese restaurant in the area … and Sushi Thai is the best find in this category. For the amount you pay, the food is plentiful and delicious.

My personal favorites are the crab rangoon, their vast assortment of sushi, and the chicken and shrimp dish. When you need a quick, filling dinner where you won’t drop too much cash, head on down to Sushi Thai on Stratford Rd. and you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for.

Tequila Since I’ve been at Wake, Tequila is always in the mix when deciding where to eat dinner. Tequila is a small, Mexican restaurant less than five minutes away from the gates of Wake. For a really nice price, you get A LOT of food — get ready to be full. Along with the Wake Forest-themed booths, my favorite part of Tequila is the enchiladas … they’re fantastic.

Little Richard’s BBQ I believe Little Richard’s is the best barbeque in town. You order up your dinner at the front counter, have a seat with your drink, and the awesome service brings your hot, fresh barbeque to your table.

Little Richard’s is another restaurant where you get some serious bang for your buck — two meats, two sides, a drink, and maybe a little bit more can be consumed for under twenty dollars … not a bad deal at all, especially if you love some good Carolina barbeque.

Elizabeth’s Pizza Italian Restaurant This little Italian restaurant is a two or three minute drive from Wake and I love this place. They provide any Italian dish you could want and they absolutely load up your plate. I have never left Elizabeth’s unsatisfied or hungry.

Another place with unbeatable prices, my favorites are the chicken parmigiana, pepperoni calzones, and classic spaghetti and meatballs.

Ryan’s Steakhouse Ryan’s is the go-to restaurant when your parents are visiting. It’s a formal steakhouse — therefore it’s quite expensive and you’re expected to spend two or three hours eating dinner.

If you get a chance to go you will love it — the steaks are top-notch, the classic steakhouse sides such as mashed potatoes, baked potatoes and asparagus are delicious, and the atmosphere is very comfortable and relaxed.

Midtown Café Whether you’re going for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Midtown Café is one of the best places around … but their breakfast is my favorite in Winston-Salem without a doubt.

Swing by Little Richard’s BBQ for a Go to Midtown Café for some of the best casual southern dining experience. pancakes and omelettes in town.

A beautiful restaurant, great service, fair prices and the best blueberry pancakes in the area make Midtown a must!

Village Tavern “VT” is the classic Wake Forest restaurant, and if you’ve visited campus before you’ve most likely been to Village Tavern. Boasting a classy atmosphere, this is an awesome place to eat dinner for three reasons: you’ll always see someone you know, the bruschetta, and the crème brulee (among many other dishes, those are just my favorites). And, the best part about Village Tavern is that if it’s too busy, there’s another one up

by Hanes Mall.

So, if you’re craving Village Tavern you won’t go hungry.

Athena Greek Taverna Athena, a small Greek Restaurant on Stratford Road, is the hidden gem of Winston-Salem. My friends and I make biweekly trips here and never go disappointed — it’s one of my favorite restaurants of all-time.

They have any Greek dish you could want, including saganaki (fried cheese with lemon), gyro plates and wraps, fried calamari, salmon, spanakopita and, for dessert, baklava! Even better, the service is phenomenal and, on Tuesday nights, there’s live, authentic Greek music provided while you eat. A must go!

Rose’s Deli Don’t let Rose’s humble location fool you, this place is delicious and economical. This place has great sandwiches, wraps and salads. All you have to do is order your food at the counter and pick it up at the window.

You can even sit outside on the covered patio if the weather is bad. When you become of age, make sure you hit up their $5 pitchers of beer on Friday nights for a great time for a cheap price.

It’s all Greek to me: rush for newbies

It’s Orientation Week and some of you already have one question on your mind - where will I rush? Orientation is the best time to meet new people, and Greek upperclassmen are on the hunt for potential little brothers and sisters. Here are a few tips to keep you out of trouble and ready for recruitment come the spring.

Girl Talk • Meet girls.

This seems obvious but it’s amazing how many girls stick with their freshman friends and don’t make an effort to branch out. Then they are surprised when they do not receive a bid in the spring. Be outgoing and friendly during class, parties and extracurricular meetings. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that they’re older. They are interested in meeting you too.

• Be genuine.

The above being said, every time you meet an upperclassman girl your first question should not be “what sorority are you in?”

Sorority girls see straight through that. Your attempt at friendship should be genuine and sincere. Get to know her before you work the question into conversation. Or, ask one of her guy friends. P.S. Really want to know what sorority she’s in? Look at her shoes. The color of her Chuck Taylors will be a good indicator.

• Don’t get black-balled.

Ah yes, the infamous black-ball. If you don’t already know, “black-ball” is a term for barring a Potential New Member (PNM) from getting a bid. The name originates from a voting system where white and black balls were representative of votes.

A white ball was a “yes” while the black was bad news for that PNM. It usually happens when a PNM is excessively rude, mean or promiscuous with an upperclassman girl’s

boyfriend. Despite how much the term is thrown around, the black-ball is rarely used. It denotes a serious offensive against a majority of a sorority. My advice? Be polite and respect your elders.

• Ignore the rumors and stereotypes.

You should pick a sorority based on how well you fit in there. There are stereotypes for every sorority as well as girls who defy them every day. Give every group a chance and you’ll soon find out where your true friends are.

• Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Many girls tend to freak out over every decision regarding how they are percieved by other girls. Let’s be honest, no one is actually going to remember what you wore. Don’t fret over every little thing you said to her during a pre-rush event. We all make mistakes and chances are, she won’t remember come January.

• Be honest.

Do you really want to be a XYZ? Then let them know. Many girls think it’s a bad idea to let a sorority know you’re interested. It’s not. In fact, it makes it easier for that sorority to make a decision on you.

Be careful you don’t pigeonhole yourself though. If you proclaim your obsession with sorority X, all the others will assume you’re not interested, leaving you without a backup plan.

For the Boys • Go to every frat.

Freshman year is the only time it will be socially acceptable to go every fraternity, so embrace it. Give every frat a chance and give yourself the opportunity to meet as many people as possible. Ignore the stereotypes and find out where you genuinely fit in.

• Bond with the brothers.

They’re interested in recruiting you, so show some interest and get to know as many members of every fraternity as possible. Although there are guys that prove each group stereotype, there are certainly those that don’t quite fit and might be better suited to your liking.

• Bring a friend, not a group.

When going to parties, bring one or two of your freshman friends. You guys can network together, and maybe ensure your bid as a group package. Don’t roll in with your entire freshman hall, however. It’s overwhelming and you will have a tougher time trying to stand out from the crowd.

Once you find a few places you like, go there often.

After you have explored all the possibilities, make an effort to show up to the same few regularly. It will help you create a meaningful bond with the

brothers and will show an obvious interest in the frat. You are welcome to play the field all semester, but it is important to let a couple organizations know you are seriously interested in joining.

• Relax.

Too many guys spend a lot of effort trying to impress upperclassmen with their money, talents, athletic skills or luck with the ladies. Just be yourself. The goal here is to make genuine friendships that will last. Nobody has ever done that by sucking up to everyone.

• Dress to theme.

A lot of guys make the mistake of thinking they are too cool to dress up for a theme party. News flash: every party is a theme party here at Wake. Make a trip to Goodwill to stock up on Hawaiian shirts and other goofy outfits. Getting into the theme shows commitment to the party, and therefore to the fraternity. Plus its fun.

• Enjoy it while it lasts.

A fraternity’s courtship with you lasts right up until the day you get a bid, so enjoy all the attention you’re getting while you can. Once you recieve your bid, the pledging process begins so make sure you really want to be there.

When it rains at “the Forest,” it POURS and the drainage system on campus is abysmal. Therefore, every Demon Deacon needs a good pair of rain boots. Ladies, try looking for wellies with a subtle pattern. This will make you stand out and look très chic, even in the cloudy weather.

It is important not to forget to accessorize.Try Alex and Ani bracelets, which go with almost any outfit and are relatively inexpensive. These bracelets can be bought in collection of bangles or individually.

Boots over skinny jeans are a fall and winter fashion staple at Wake Forest. Stand out in a sea of tall boots with some cute ankle boots. Ankle boots are expected to be a big fashion trend this fall. Try a pair in a navy blue and pair with tan corduroys so that your boots really pop.

Spice up your outfit for classes by throwing a cardigan on over an oxford shirt. Cardigans will not only keep you warm in those chilly classrooms, but they will also give you some fashionable flair.

Sperry Topsiders are a good choice for most aspects of life at Wake Forest. Here’s some advice: keep a clean, fresh pair of Sperry’s to wear to class or out to dinner and a pair of Sperry’s for tailgates or fraternity parties. Tailgates can often be muddy and well, floors in frat basements are disgusting, so it’s good to have a pair of Sperry’s that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Tips for surviving on a student budget Getting through college on a tight budget isn’t easy, so here’s some advice on how to save money

Now that you’re living on your own (probably for the first time in your life), it’s time to accept the hard reality of your new financial situation: for the next four years, if not longer, you’re close to broke, all day, every day.

Even though you’ll have to pinch every last penny and jump at every sale you can find, it is definitely possible to survive your years at Wake Forest on a student budget.

Here are some tips to help you get through freshman year without spending your way into oblivion: 1. Take advantage of everything that your meal plan has to offer; it may sound obvious, but you’ll be surprised how tempting it is to stray from the Pit. The best way to handle this is to budget out your Pit swipes, Old Gold Swipes and Food Dollars. Get creative in the Pit so you don’t get sick of the same meal.

2. Limit your Starbucks visits. If your caffeine addiction comes anywhere close to competing with mine, you’ll need your coffee fix pretty often (i.e. 3-5 times per day). It’s really easy to lose track of how much money or how many food dollars

you’re being drained of by $4 lattes every day; remember that there is always coffee in the pit, or you can always bring a personal Keurig for your dorm room and stock up on K-Cups.

3. Make sure to have all of your clothes for the entire year ready for school; you’ll want clothes that work for basically any type of weather you can imagine, because in Winston-Salem we really get it all. By prepping for all types of weather you won’t have to frantically shop at the Hanes Mall or order what you need (with shipping/ handling added on) online. Unexpected shopping expenses can definitely take a toll on your wallet.

4. If you don’t plan on bringing a car to campus for your freshman year, the temptation of eating off campus is significantly diminished. If you do have a car (or a friend with a car), be sure to limit your off-campus restaurant excursions to fit your budget. As fun as it is to go into Winston-Salem for the night with friends, it’s also an easy way to spend a lot of money in a short period of time.

5. If you are eating off campus, make sure to bring cash (or get your waiter to split the checks)! It’s easy to get caught up in a group dinner where you’re the only one with a credit card and wind up paying for everyone’s meal. Always have cash to throw into a pot so that you’re only paying for your meal.

6. As far as books go, it’s definitely cheapest to either order them through Amazon or to rent them from the

university bookstore. Buying your books from the university store is a fatal mistake; books for a standard five course schedule can rack up a bill of more than $700 in the blink of an eye, and since you probably won’t be using them after the semester is over, there’s no reason to dish out that kind of cash for a brand new text book you’ll only need for a few months.

7. Stock up on snacks in your room so that you’re not spending $5 every day in the Sundry or the Pod. Whenever your parents come to town, make sure they take you to Target or Walmart so you can load up and save yourself some cash.

8. Take advantage of any free food that Wake Forest provides. When you’re a freshman, there are a lot of events early on in the year to try and get you acclimated to college life, and they usually involve some type of free food. It won’t last long, so take it while you can.

9. Instead of paying for a ZipCar or relying on your car-owning friends, use Wake’s free transportation to get downtown or to Hanes Mall. When you need to get off campus for something, you can usually rely on the “Riding the Wake” to get you to your destination or close enough to walk. The schedule is on the university website.

10. Be sure to check your bank account balances every few days. This is just to make sure there hasn’t been any kind of accidental charge and that you have an idea of how much money you still have to budget.

Get a world class college experience You may have just gotten here, but it’s never too early to start thinking about studying abroad

If you ask any Wake Forest upperclassman who has studied abroad, he or she will likely tell you the enormous benefits of the once in a lifetime opportunities provided by the university. Although no experience is perfect, you would be hard pressed to find someone who has had a negative experience abroad.

University students are blessed with the opportunity to engage in over 400 programs that span the globe, including three residential houses across Europe and a conference center in Nicaragua. Over 60 percent of Wake

students utilize the opportunities offered by the Center for International Studies and the university hosts a number of scholarships in order to allow students to travel abroad regardless of financial circumstances. The university actively encourages all students, regardless of major, to participate in international programs.

Studying abroad will contribute to your growth as both a student as an individual. It will force you to widen your horizons and develop new perspectives about the world

around you. In an increasingly global society, this personal improvement is imperative. And if you are afraid that such an experience is too foreign, just as your homesickness during your first semester will pass, so will the fear of leaving your comfort zone for a semester or possibly more.

Most Wake students study abroad the first semester of their junior year or the second semester of their sophomore year, but several other options, including summer programs,

exist. So take your freshman year to explore your interests and choose a program that best suits your needs but don’t be afraid to take a chance on an experience that you aren’t quite certain about. Also, while it is fun to study abroad with friends, don’t forget to take the opportunity to make new friends and get to know people from different cultures; if your best friend wishes to study in a different place from you, it’s not the end of the world.

Although I came into Wake with no expectation of studying abroad, I am happy to say that due to the opportunities presented by the university I have been able to visit over 10 countries through Wake programs. The experiences I have had and the bonds I have formed have been life-changing, and, on a personal level, I would highly recommend embracing the opportunities provided by the university and studying outside of the campus bubble.

Even though you’ve just arrived in Winston-Salem, don’t forget that there’s a whole wide world out there to explore!

Your four years here will flash by before your eyes, so use this bucket list to make the most of your time Once you get adjusted to your new surroundings, it’s time to start setting those long term goals. Although your time at Wake has just begun, it will be over before you know it so make sure your plan accordingly.

This list includes the must do’s while you are here. Now, all of these won’t be accomplished within your first semester, or even first year, this bucket list could even last until your senior year.

The timing doesn’t matter — it’s the memories that count.

1. Climb onto the roof of one of the many classrooms buildings

11. Keep your computer functioning for all four years

2. Go to Wait Chapel “after hours”

12. Relax on all of the seven swings on campus

3. STUDY ABROAD 4. Go tunneling (Here is a hint: there’s one near Luter and Babcock) 5. Spend the night in the ZSR 6. Get on first name basis with Maria in the Mag Room 7. Go to President’s Ball 8. Have a pitcher of beer at Shorty’s on the patio

13. Participate in Project Pumpkin, Hit the Bricks and Wake n’ Shake 14. Check out the Picasso’s in Benson 15. Go to a fraternity party sober - trust me this one will be particularly challenging 16.
