About the Cover: The history of Gates Ranch begins with Amos Gates joining Stephen F. Austin in 1821 as one of the illustrious “300” – adventurous, entrepreneurial young men who sought their fortunes and made their lives in the untouched region where Texas independence would be born. As a land scout for Austin’s colony, Amos became the first American settler to cross the Brazos River.
