JEFFERY M.

LOVELAND TKA PRESIDENT

A Word from Our President Dear Friends,

L

ast month we celebrated the accomplishments of 112 graduates at our 43rd Commencement Exercises. In addition, five talented seniors made history as the first graduating class of The King’s Academy Clewiston. We understand that it is no small responsibility to train up a child in the way he should go. We are dedicated to helping students develop their full God-given potential through challenging academic, fine arts, and athletic programs and shaping well-rounded leaders with a Christian world view. I applaud the Class of 2014 as they join more than 2,500 TKA alumni faithfully serving throughout the world. Over the years, The King’s Academy has continued to grow and God has blessed TKA by providing opportunities to expand our campus facilities to meet growing demands. In the center pages of this issue of The Chronicle, you will see exciting plans for enhancing our already impressive facilities on campus. Through generous donations by individuals who are committed to The King’s Academy and its mission, we will be building a state-of-the-art theater/auditorium in addition to an aquatic center, as well as enhancing athletic facilities. I look forward to what the Lord has in store for The King’s Academy for the 2014-2015 school year and beyond. Our school verse for next year is: “ Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25 As we build on campus and in the lives of young people, we do so committed to maintaining God’s Word as the foundation for all that we do! Yours for Christian education,

Jeff M. Loveland, ‘75 President

Seniors Make Lifetime Memories Seniors Explore the United Kingdom The King’s Academy’s Senior Class of 2014 enjoyed a 10-day tour through England, Scotland and Ireland as a culmination of their educational experiences at TKA. This trip allowed students to experience the rich history, culture, and sights of these countries while making lasting memories with their classmates. Students spent time in London, Cambridge, the Lake District, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, and Dublin. Visiting the American Cemetery and Memorial in Cambridge, which commemorates American servicemen who died in WWII, was a impactful and moving experience. Other highlights of the trip included Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, Cambridge University, and Edinburgh Castle. This trip of a lifetime was far more than a reward for completing the curriculum for high school graduation, it helped to solidify the years spent building character and leadership qualities into the lives of these students.

Senior Retreat The senior class attended their annual Senior Retreat at the Lake Placid Camp and Conference Center in December. They spent three days learning, being challenged, and bonding as a class. This year’s theme was “Strength & Courage; Fearless with God,” based on Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Senior Luncheon/BBQ Each year, seniors enjoy a special luncheon/BBQ with their mothers or fathers as they prepare to graduate from high school and transition into college. The girls enjoyed a beautiful luncheon hosted by Chuck and Susan Gableman at Community of Hope Church, and the boys enjoyed a fun day at Old Palm Golf Club hosted by Chuck and Ellen Hobbs. TKA alumna Haley Locke ‘09 was guest speaker for the girls and alumnus Jordan Sorber ‘07 challenged the boys. Parents shared in a time of blessing, prayers, and memories as they acknowledge the approaching end of high school for their daughters or sons. “The Senior Boys BBQ provided a great moment for fathers and sons. I applaud TKA for making the event a tradition. I especially cherish the moment where fathers got to publicly show their love and pass their blessings on to their sons.” - Todd Cannon , tka parent

Growing Future Leaders

E

lementary faculty and administration focus on advancing students academically, socially, and spiritually. Each of these areas is specifically tailored to fulfill TKA’s mission of producing leaders who impact the world for Christ. As we reflect on all that has been accomplished this year, it is amazing to see how God has blessed our elementary department in each area.

ACADEMIC GROWTH Teachers and students continue to make great strides in the classroom, as evidenced through the increase of our already high standardized test scores. Our hope is to see this hard work and effort recognized in September 2014 by receiving

the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award from the Department of Education. As we wait with anticipation, we take pride in knowing that we are one of only 50 private schools nationally to be nominated for the award. Students grew academically through the utilization of technology in classrooms. Along with Promethean boards and active student response systems, teachers have

access to multiple technology enhancements. These include a tablet cart containing tablets for each student in the classroom, math enrichment curriculum through iXL, and Accelerated Reader to stimulate reading comprehension. Each of these have allowed us to continue challenging our students while making learning fun, as experienced in our “Read the Most Day” with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and 88.1 WAY-FM.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT The social growth of elementary students continues to be a hallmark of our school. Each year students are given the opportunity to be involved in fine arts, athletics, music, and academic competition teams. In March, our Odyssey of the Mind team was recognized as top in the region. The King’s Kids Elementary Choir earned a first place finish in the FACCS Fine-Arts Competition, and elementary band students achieved 18 superlative solo performances in the regional competition.

SPIRITUAL NURTURING The spiritual nurturing that occurs daily on our campus is extremely encouraging. Teachers remain committed to providing a loving environment for each child and shepherding them in their walk with Christ. Whether participating programs, such as Be the One or National Day of Prayer, TKA elementary students receive constant guidance in their spiritual development. Throughout this school year, 23 students prayed to receive Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and many others made a choice of rededication. Our student body experienced another profound Spiritual Emphasis Week in the spring, as Rev. and Mrs. Sexton shared with them what it means to be on a mission for Christ. I am thankful to be involved with such a dynamic school where students are encouraged to grow in all areas of their lives. I look forward to another fantastic year of pursuing academic excellence and spiritual vitality in the lives of elementary students.

6th Grade Graduation Sixth graders celebrated the culmination of elementary school during their graduation ceremony. Performances by sixth grade instrumentalists, vocalists, and students sharing their patriotic essays highlighted this milestone. Guest speaker and TKA parent Kurt Marschall encouraged students to live Godly lives that reflect

Jesus, and he challenged parents to lead with a Godly family legacy. Students walked with excitement across the stage to receive their diplomas from Principal Heath Nivens and Assistant Principal Melissa Allen. TKA parent Eric Diddle closed in prayer; it was a moving send-off for students into secondary school.

6th Grade Retreat Sixth grade students enjoyed a two-day retreat at Life for Youth Camp in Vero Beach to kick off the school year. The retreat provided a dedicated time for them to bond as a class, be challenged as leaders, and draw closer to God. The campsite also offered fun activities during free time such as a rock climbing wall, waterslides, go carts, and paddle boats. Students participated in a time of praise and worship each day with teaching by TKA parent Michael Schwartz and TKA Chaplain Jon Otto.

Sixth Grade Students tour Washington D.C. From the hills of Arlington National Cemetery, to the columns of the Lincoln Memorial, and the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building, 53 students and 40 chaperones experienced four memorable days in our nation’s capital. Each day, students learned about our country’s original history. Appreciation for freedom became very real as they toured the U.S. Supreme Court, Ford’s Theatre, the Washington Monument, and the various Smithsonian museums. This 4-day experience was a fun and educational completion to their sixth grade year.

opened its doors, offering a fully-accredited Christian academic program for seventh, eight, and ninth grade students. The campus has continued to experience growth both academically and spiritually with an additional grade level being added each year. This year, five gifted and talented seniors made history as the first graduating class. In a beautiful ceremony, Dr. Clyde S. Meckstroth ‘77, TKA’s Chairman of the Board, gave the Invocation followed by inspirational and God-honoring addresses by Salutatorian Dakodah Davis and Valedictorian Mary Gibson. Mr. Jeff Gentry, veteran TKA main campus secondary teacher, delivered the commencement address encouraging seniors to know that they are “a work of art and an artist at work.” He challenged them, in light of their relationship with Jesus, to be a light-bearer and a spirit-giver. Seniors were presented their diplomas by TKA President Jeffrey Loveland ‘75. Congratulations to The King’s Academy Clewiston’s graduating Class of 2014!

Inaugural Political Science Club By Charles Hobbs ‘14

C

reating the Political Science Club offered me a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on my school while enacting my unfettered vision to propagate a subject area I am most passionate about. Through the process of petitioning school administration, drafting by-laws, and establishing a club charter, I navigated the sometimes arduous task of turning my concept into a reality. I am most proud of the fact that the Political Science Club, in its inaugural year at The King’s Academy, enjoys broad student and faculty support as the organization has assumed the role of developing

future leaders via robust discussion and exploration of politics and current events. This endeavor has not only contributed to my own personal development by acquiring distinct leadership experience, but has also impacted the school for future students by introducing a political outlet for the student body beyond the walls of the school itself.

O

dyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem solving competition. This year, Daniel Kamp, Isabella Santicchia, Chris Santiago, Caroline Rinker, Maddy Diddle, Abby Martin, and I were TKA’s 6th grade team. Our coaches were Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Albert. They were only allowed to supervise us; they could not give us any ideas or help us make any of the props. We worked diligently on our problem, “It’s How We Rule,” for six months after school and on Saturdays. We had to fulfill specific requirements to solve the problem and had a limited budget of $125 to accomplish the task. We took a trip to Resource Depot and gathered recycled materials

to make our props and sew our costumes. On March 8th, we performed our skit at the Regional Competition, and we were the first Odyssey team from The King’s Academy to score first place in all three categories! Then in April, we traveled to Orlando to perform in the State Competition. We placed sixth out of 17 teams and were very proud because once again this was the highest ranking a TKA team has ever achieved. I enjoyed the entire problem-solving process, from brainstorming and compromising, to building and performing. Being a part of the Odyssey of the Mind team has been an incredible experience!

State-of-the-Art Theater and Athletic Enhancements For more than 44 years, The King’s Academy has been Dedicated to Excellence. Whether moving to the Cherry Road campus in 1971 or moving to Belvedere Road in 2005, TKA has always acknowledged that growth is necessary to provide excellent programs for students. Once again, the excellence of TKA’s programs has outgrown the facilities. Sixty-five teams, bands, choirs, and activities now compete for space on campus. The entire school community has been dedicated to excellence, and now the Dedicated to Excellence Campaign will provide dedicated space for the continued growth of TKA programs. The Campaign will allow athletic and arts programs to flourish in their own space. The main facet of the project will be a 23,000 s.f. state of the art theater/auditorium with comfortable seating and professional acoustics for band, choir, dance, and theater. The facility will also include an outdoor amphitheater and indoor/outdoor concessions. The current 11,000 s.f. gym will be used year-round for athletics only. Add to that lighting for baseball and softball fields and 5 acres of additional practice space for football, soccer, and lacrosse, and the result will be an expanded campus Dedicated to Excellence!

A Star-Studded Success Raising More than $343,000!

T

he King’s Academy’s 2014 Mane Event Dinner and Auction was a huge success thanks to the generosity of so many people who joined in the effort! On Saturday, March 1, 2014, more than 250 friends and families of The King’s Academy came together for a Star-Studded Premiere under a chandelier lit tent on the beautiful lawns of the National Croquet Center. Guests walked the red carpet lined with paparazzi and famous Hollywood characters. Led by co-chairs Michelle Collier, Lisa Gerardi, and Dana Wilkerson, along with an amazing leadership team, the evening was a fun and lively culmination of months of dedicated planning and resulted in tangible blessings to the students and programs of The King’s Academy. Guests enjoyed showing their support by bidding on more than 400 unique silent and live auction items, including family getaways, entertainment events, memorabilia, and the wildly popular We Love TKA spirit experiences. This year’s special project, Call to the Heart, raised more than $35,000 to provide air conditioning on TKA route buses. Thank you to all who sponsored and attended the event. All proceeds from The Mane Event support The King’s Academy Annual Fund programs including need-based financial assistance, academic programs, and faculty development. The annual auction event has raised more than $3 million over its 13 year history.

he King’s Academy athletic program was blessed to have another successful season on the field, while investing in the lives of student-athletes! TKA is committed to developing athletes in all aspects of life and watching them grow as Christian leaders who impact their world. The 2013-14 season included moving into a larger classification in many sports (from 3A to 4A) and the addition of middle school boys soccer and lacrosse. The Lions stepped up to the plate with the first district championship in boys golf and girls cross country, along with a fifth consecutive state championship in competitive cheerleading, and the girls track team placed second in the state in the 4x100 relay. In the younger grades, middle school boys soccer and baseball both won conference championships. On an individual level, Paul Schumacher won the Lou Groza award for best high school kicker, and Julian Ortega broke 6 individual and relay records in swimming. Going the Extra Mile

E

ach year at the Varsity Sports Banquet the Athletic Director presents the Extra Mile Award to individuals who have been a special blessing to the Athletic Department and have gone the “extra mile” to serve at TKA. The award is based on the principles of Mark 5:41 which states: “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” This year four team moms and one multi-dimensional dad were recognized for their time and energy in making sure TKA’s staff and athletes were well cared for. Congratulations to Rosario Larson, Tiffany Mercurio, Sherry Neal, Robyn Wentz, and Chuck Higgins. Each of these volunteers have a child or children who play multiple sports. Tiffany Mercurio and Sherry Neal share their hearts

about why they volunteer and how TKA athletics has impacted their families. n

TIFFANY MERCURIO: “TKA athletics has impacted

my children in many ways. It has created in them a sense of bonding—a brotherhood. It was a family away from their family at home. I am so grateful that, even at practices and on the fields of play, God’s word and prayer are being exhibited.” n

SHERRY NEAL: “I believe being involved in athletics

has been a positive experience that has taught them many life lessons. TKA coaches have been excellent role models and place as much emphasis on spiritual growth as athletic experience.”

“The Best High School Musical Ever!” The King’s Academy Theater Company soared to new heights with its final production of the season, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. Under the direction of Artistic Director David Snyder and full orchestra directed by Sonia Santiago, the talented cast of 120 transported the audience back to 19th-century Paris. The show traced the tragic love story of a beautiful young soprano and a musical genius shamed by his

physical appearance into a shadowy existence beneath the majestic Paris Opera House. Audience members forgot they were watching high school students perform and were left breathless and exhausted by the sheer emotional impact of the production. With its sensational musical score, glorious orchestration, lavish sets, stunning costumes, and special effects – The King’s Academy’s undertaking of The Phantom of the Opera was the most ambitious production in the history of its Scan with a smartphone to theater company. view show video

Real World Training “Through the production of Phantom of the Opera, I got the opportunity to be challenged working on the lighting design of such an amazing show. The King’s Academy gave me the opportunity to begin to perfect a craft I hope to pursue professionally. The Fine Arts Department as a whole has taught me courage and creativity; it also instilled in me a desire for excellence in all areas of performance — playing my horn, acting, singing, and working on the tech design of all of our shows. Through the challenges that come in a show’s course, I’ve learned to think on my feet and make decisions, but in the end to know that God works on and through TKA’s stage!” Emma Percy ’15 Student Technician The Phantom of the Opera

SPIRITUAL LIFE High School Chaplains Theresa Neidrauer (14 yrs), Gary Butler (16 yrs), and Elementary Chaplain Jonathan Otto (35 yrs) have been serving TKA for many years in various capacities. They sponsor Bible studies, oversee spiritual life matters, assist with chapels, mentor students, and communicate needs and prayer requests. They recently answered some questions about their role for The Chronicle.

Spiritual Vitality What is the role of the Chaplains at TKA? NEIDRAUER: Our role is to nurture the spiritual lives of our students,

families, and employees and to offer spiritual support in their time of need.

What are some ways you fulfill that role? OTTO: As the elementary chaplain, I seek to fulfill my goal by helping lead

members of our school family to an understanding of salvation through the Person and Work of Jesus Christ, building them up in Christ, and equipping these individuals to serve Christ by providing a Biblical worldview concerning man, life, and things. God has called me to love, teach, train, support, and serve our school community. It is all about the foundational core of having a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. BUTLER: In Secondary, the principle way our role is fulfilled is through our

office counseling ministry. We have contact with students through several different avenues, including walk-ins, suspension follow-ups, and faculty and parent requests. Our counsel is mainly spiritual and pastoral, not clinical. We facilitate prayer across the campus by sending out prayer requests as needs arise and come to our attention.

What is your Perspective on the spiritual direction of TKA? BUTLER: Bible-based and Christ-centered

“TKA has always been and remains committed to being

spirituality has always been and remains a the school where clear priority at TKA. Our Mission Statement Christ is King.” continues to serve us well. Our daily pledge of Gary Butler allegiance to the Bible is not just a routine, but a matter of the heart and our way of life. We are devoted to God’s Word and strongly encourage its integration personally, in our classrooms, and corporately. We value Bible teaching and programs that enhance spirituality. As important as anything else is the uncompromising high value we place on Godly leadership, beginning with our Board of Governors and including our administrators, faculty, and staff personnel. And by the grace of God, the result is that Christ is consistently modeled.

What is the most rewarding part of your Ministry? NEIDRAUER: Leading a student to the Lord is obviously the

greatest reward, but also rewarding is having students visit who are seeking guidance because they personally desire to honor God. BUTLER: I enjoy the daily personal contact with students, parents, faculty, and staff members, giving a listening ear and spiritual advice as God enables me. I look forward to all the moments of prayer. There is, however, no moment that compares with seeing a student come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. OTTO: God’s faithfulness is so evident and great. Through-

out my various roles and years of service at TKA, I have enjoyed communicating God’s truth and implementing creative ways to make it authentic, meaningful, and applicable for those who enter the doors of our campus.

Impacting Others as Spiritual Life Prefects Ashley Stack ‘14 has attended TKA for 14 years. She served as Editor of the Elementary Yearbook and as a Student Ambassador. She was also named Homecoming Queen. Ashley will study nursing at the University of Central Florida and earned a Fallon Scholarship.

TKA’s Spiritual Life Prefects provide leadership to the student body in areas of spiritual development. They organize and lead student Bible studies and activities as well as events, such a National Day of Prayer and See You at the Pole.

“Why did the girl who at one point claimed to be an atheist wake up early to come to a FUSED Bible study before school? The answer lies only in the saving power of Jesus. It’s been an incredible privilege and blessing to serve as Spiritual Life Prefect!”

“Why is it that the kid who’s known for partying shows up at See You at the Pole?” Garrett Larson ‘14 has attended TKA for 14 years. He served as a Student Ambassador Chair, Vice-President of the National Honor Society, and Captain of the Football team. He will play football at Davidson College, where he earned an Academic Leadership Scholarship. “I loved being part of a family of believers.”

“I have enjoyed watching people’s hearts turn towards God through events such as FUSED Bible study and Reflect Worship Night. I consider it a huge privilege to have facilitated events that impacted my classmates. Being a Prefect gave me the opportunity to influence others to direct their heart towards Christ.”

Michela Diddle ‘14 has attended TKA for 13 years. She played Varsity Volleyball and sang in the choir, while serving as a Prefect, Yearbook Editor, and Student Ambassador Chair. Michela will study digital media at Liberty University where she earned an Academic Leadership Scholarship.

“Leading as a Prefect has been both a blessing and a huge responsibility. Learning how to manage my time posed a challenge to spread the love of Christ and balance my academic life. I’ve grown to have a heart for my peers, seeking to show them Jesus can make a difference in their lives “Weekly FUSED Bible studies as He has in mine.” really made an impact on my life.” TKa.net | SPIRITUAL LIFE | 31

Planning for the future Your gift can leave a legacy for Christian education at The King’s Academy! The language of a will is very important. If you would like to support The King’s Academy through a bequest, please use the following specific language to identify the school as your intended recipient: The King’s Academy, Inc., a Florida corporation not-for-profit, currently located at 8401 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33411. Prepay Tuition at TKA Grandparents who desire a legal method of avoiding federal estate and gift taxes can do so by prepaying their grandchildren’s tuition at The King’s Academy. The IRS states that multi-year tuition prepayments are excluded from one’s estate and are not counted against annual gift tax exclusion amounts. In other words, tuition prepayments to The King’s Academy are not subject to estate, generation-skipping, or gift taxes. For more information about including TKA in your estate plans or prepaying tuition, contact Glenn Martin, Director of Development, at 561-686-4244 extension 325.

The King’s Academy, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, encourages all donors to contact their tax and legal professionals regarding tuition prepayments and their individual estate and tax planning situation. All gifts to The King’s Academy are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
