3 This SHOWCASE presents outstanding views of American cities and, as usual, an assortment of intriguing maps. Reflecting the spirit of our current show, , we include several American figures, starting with the portrait on the right. This 1781 mezzotint of George Washington by John Trumbull, a fine example of an 18th century portrait, shares the page with a c. 1935 ink wash drawing of a playful boy by Robert Riggs, giving a sense of the range of time and style covered at The Old Print Gallery. Winslow Homer illustrations of 19th century people are seen on pages 14 and 15. On exhibit at the gallery through November 14th, is a compendium of “people in prints” by some of the most celebrated 20th century American printmakers. Creating in a time when the art world was pushing towards abstract expressionism and modernism, these print artists stayed rooted in a sort of inherent figural humanism. With an exquisite ability to convey emotion through the anatomy of the human figure, they used pencils, woodblocks, and burins to capture an arresting gaze, a fleeting moment between individuals, people at work, at play, and deep in thought. Seen together, these prints offer a glimpse of 20th century America, while also reminding viewers of our shared human condition Also included in this catalog are works from our summer show, A monotype is made by drawing or painting a design in printing ink onto any smooth surface, then covering this matrix with paper and passing it through a press. The result, an exact reverse of the original drawing, is an original and unique monotype. Several striking examples from the show appear on the final pages.

3. General Washington. John Trumbull. Published by V. Green, London. Mezzotint, 1781. Painted by J. Trumbull Esqr. of Connecticut 1780. Engraved by V. Green, Mezzotinto engraver to his Majesty & to the Elector Palatine. Engrav’d from the original in the possession of M. De Neufville of Amsterdam. The artist, John Trumbull, was an officer in the Continental Army from 1775 to 1777. For a few weeks he even served George Washington as his aide-decamp. Trumbull painted this image of Washington from memory while he was studying under Benjamin West in London. To the right of Washington his body servant, Billy Lee, holds his horse and to the left is a vista of West Point. The original painting was in the possession of the international banking house of John De Neufville & Son of Amsterdam and remained there for a century until bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Image size 22 7/8 x 15 15/16". Fair condition, a beautiful impression. Top right margin replaced and several tears in the margins. Hart 84. #21631.4 $5,500.

5. Richmond, from the Hill above the Waterworks. George Cooke. Published by Lewis P. Clover, 180 Fulton St. N.Y. Aquatint engraving, c. 1833. Engraved by W. J. Bennett from a painting by G. Cooke. One of the rarest and most beautiful of Bennett's aquatints. Gloria Deak describes the print as "George Cooke's romantic celebration of Richmond's charms. . . His composition describes the winding path of the Kanawha Canal, embracing in its arc the waters of the James River, where closely clustered buildings rising from its banks define the human community. Grazing cows lend a pastoral touch, and elegant residents, sketched at their leisure on the wooded heights, are placed by the artist in the amphitheater like setting. . . ." Shown prominently is the Virginia State Capitol building which was designed by Thomas Jefferson. To the right is the Governor's mansion. To the left is City Hall (torn down in 1870) and the State Penitentiary, which was designed by Benjamin Latrobe. Image size 17 3/4 x 25 3/8". 8 15. Das Erst General Inhaltend die Beschreibung. . . . (Modern world.) Sebastain Munster. Published by Sebastian Petri, Basel. Woodblock, 15501572. A fine example of Munster's "modern" map of the world. This example is from the second woodblock engraved by David Kandel. His initials are in the lower left. The map is richly embellished with sea monsters and twelve windheads. North America is shown with the large cleft nearly separating the east coast from the continent, often referred to as the Sea of Verrazano. Appeared in Cosmographica. German text on verso. Image size 10 3/8 x 15". Good condition. Black & white. Shirley, R. Mapping of the World, 92. 88148.1 $2,950. 16. Novae Insulae XXVI Nova Tabula. (Americas.) Sebastian Munster. Published by Sebastian Munster, Basel. Woodcut, 1540 (1545). Munster's map of the New World is one of the most important and influential maps of the 16th century. It appeared in Munster’s Cosmography and is the earliest to show all of North and South America in its true continental form. The flags of Spain (on Puerto Rico) and Portugal (shown in the South Atlantic) depict their respective spheres of influence. North America is oddly shaped and depicts one of the great geographic misconceptions: In 1523 Giovanni di Verrazano passed by the outer banks of the Carolinas. He mistook Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds for an Oriental Sea that would lead to the Spice Islands. Munster recorded Verrazano’s accounts in his Cosmography, which propagated the myth for many years. In Mexico, Lake Temistan (not named in this state of the map) empties into the Caribbean. The Yucatan Peninsula is shown as an island. South America is depicted with a large bulge in the northwest and notes that cannibals inhabit parts of it. The map is also the first to show Japan, 'Zipangri', based entirely upon the accounts of Marco Polo and other early travelers and is the first map to name the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). Shown in the Pacific Ocean is Magellan's ship 'Victoria'. Overall a striking map. The first state of the map was issued in the 1540 and 1542 editions of Munster's Geographia. This is the rare second state of Munster's map of America. In the second state the title was changed from "Novae Insulae XVII. . ." to "Novae Insulae XXVI . . ." and appeared in only one edition. Image size 10 x 13 3/8". Very good condition save for some minor splitting along centerfold. Black & white. Burden, The Mapping of North America, 12; Suarez, Shedding the Veil, 23. #88166.1 $9,250.

49. Green Grow The Lilacs. Thomas Hart Benton. Lithograph, 1954. This is a signed lithograph that illustrates the book “Green Grow the Lilacs”. It is a proof print which was hand printed and signed in pencil by Thomas Hart Benton. The illustrations printed in the book are from the same plates but are printed in reverse because the book was printed on an offset lithographic press. Offset presses print first on a rubber platen, then the rubber platen prints on the paper. The resulting image is in the same direction as the plate. There are two benefits to these presses, first these presses print faster, and second, the artist can does not have to draw the image in reverse. The individual prints are not listed in “The Lithographs of Thomas Hart Benton” by Creekmore Fath because they were never issued in a signed edition, only proofs of the lithographic illustrations exist. Signed in pencil by the artist. Image size: 8 6/16 x 6 1/2" (each print). Very good condition. #81714.1 $2,250.
