The Agronomy Certificate Level II Program builds upon the agronomic skills gained in the Level I Certificate. Upon completion of these courses, you will be able to integrate agronomic concepts and make general recommendations regarding crop production. > Livestock OVERVIEW

Olds College provides a variety of livestock training for producers and hobby farmers. Through a combination of classroom and hands-on learning, these courses provide you with the skills to better manage herd health while saving money on veterinary and hoof trimming bills, and provides you with the skills that you may require to work for a livestock operation. We are also developing new online and face-to-face livestock courses, so if you do not see what you want listed here, or on the website, contact us! CATTLE AI (ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION) This intensive, 4-day course covers all aspects of Artificial Insemination (AI) and herd reproduction management. Students will be introduced to aspects of artificial insemination and herd reproduction management to be used in a producerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own herd. Lectures will provide an understanding of controlled breeding, sire selection, and nutrition. The logistics of getting set up to practice all on your own will be addressed, including required equipment and costs. The hands-on portion of this course will provide the opportunity for students to practice correct semen handling and artificial insemination techniques and procedures.

These programs provide an introduction to the exciting world of horse racing, and produce skilled, qualified employees to fill the open employment positions within the horse racing community. Each program includes 4 months of hands-on learning, and includes a paid practicum. You will learn from top industry professionals, and find out where you fit in as a valued member of the team. Our Horse Racing Programs are one of a kind in North America, delivered in state-of-the-art facilities, and instructed by supportive, experienced horse racing professionals. Each Program is highly subsidized by Horse Racing Alberta, to provide professionally trained horse people in the industry. The students pay a low tuition and their cost for accommodations only, and Horse Racing Alberta pays the rest at a tune of 80% subsidy. What is it like to work in a veterinary clinic or other animal care related business? This veterinary science camp will show you! Through classroom learning, demonstration and hands-on learning opportunities, you will learn basic skills and become familiar with various career opportunities related to veterinary science.

INTRODUCTION TO VETERINARY MEDICINE FOR TEENS If you are between the ages of 13-16, considering a career in the veterinary industry, and want to understand the different roles that are available as career options, then this course may be for you. In this hands-on course, the instructor and guest speakers will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of Veterinary Medical Receptionists, Veterinary Technical Assistants, Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinarians and non-veterinary Animal Care Facilities. You will learn some basics of animal care and first aid, including animal behavior, safety, handling and restraint, general animal health assessment and physical exams.

EXPERIENCED HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SAFETY CERTIFICATION Industry is seeing a need for their experienced operators to have proficiency certification in order to either bid on projects or abide by insurance guidelines. While this is not legislated in Alberta at this time, Olds College has government approved Heavy Equipment Operator Curriculum. We are able to provide equipment specific Safety Certification. This is based upon our curriculum that has been developed and reviewed with Industry Stakeholders. Prerequisite hours for entry into the evaluations are EQUIPMENT BASED. We require that prior to us evaluating an operator, a sufficient amount of hours on the specific piece of equipment must be logged. Equipment includes loader, skid steer, dozer, grader and packer. Students that successfully complete the classroom work and evaluation will receive a certificate valid for 3 years. Group rates available. > Animal Welfare & Humane Slaughter OVERVIEW

This program is designed as a basic introduction into the world of humane handling and stunning. Participants will gain an understanding of the theory and applications related to the slaughter of all species that are processed in Canada. In addition to this, proper handling and animal welfare are covered in the course material. Continuous enrollment - students have 3 months after registering to complete a single course. INTRODUCTION/ANIMAL ONLINE WELFARE On successful completion, you will be able to define the term "Animal Welfare", describe the origins and development of animal welfare, list the five freedoms, state when slaughterhouses were first regulated, and explain the purpose of quality assurance.

On successful completion, you will be able to identify the key behaviour traits of animals, describe the senses of sight, hearing and smell in animals, and describe what is meant by the "field of vision".

HUMANE SLAUGHTER: THE BARN ENVIRONMENT ONLINE This module covers the assessment of animals for their fitness and the assessment of an animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basic needs including food, water, space, segregation and thermal comfort. A section also looks at how barns can be designed to allow for efficient movement of animals.

On successful completion, you will be able to state why bleeding causes the death of an animal, identify the major blood vessels and their function, explain the differences between species that affect the rate of death, explain why the time between stunning and bleeding is important, give examples of factors that affect stun to bleed time, and state legal considerations concerning animal welfare during bleeding.
