SUNDAY WORKSHOPS CONTINUED: MAKE A WET FELTED VESSEL Creating felt from wool goes back thousands of years and has a rich history in many cultures. In this workshop, we’ll start by making a sample piece of felt to help understand the unique, natural properties of wool. Each participant will then put their new-found knowledge to use making a felted bowl or vessel. Wet felting is a hands-on, sometimes messy art process. MORE SPRANG You’ve already dabbled in sprang but want to know what you can do with this knowledge? Explore further, examining topics such as circular warp and multicolored warps. Based firmly on the historic record we will discuss ways to shape your piece, creating items such as vests, mittens, and leggings. Sprang is an ancient braiding method, performed on a warp stretched over a frame. It results in two mirror-image rows for every one row worked. The instructor has viewed numerous examples of this type of work in museums across Europe, from Copenhagen, to London, Paris, Lyon, and Munich. We will review images of these historic garments and discuss ways to reproduce them. Get help setting up your sprang exploration. Prerequisite: Have completed a basic level sprang class: can set up a flat warp, and are comfortable with the basic interlinking stitch. Student Supplies: Bring your own sprang frame. The instructor will contact you before class to discuss

warp materials for your project. Optional $50 frame available to purchase directly from the instructor at the workshop, cash only. Instructor: Carol James Sun June 21 (9am-4:30pm) $195 + GST

Tired of slubs and thin spots in your singles? Want to know the secrets of smooth yarns? Break down the process of spinning singles into its smallest steps to explore the distribution of twist and how it affects our yarn. Treadling, drafting, ratios, take-up, and plying will all be examined in a controlled exercise that will give spinners a new insight into what is happening when we make yarn. Understanding the interactions that take place as we twist fibre into yarn will help even the most experienced spinner make yarns with more consistent and predictable results. Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable spinning a continuous single on a spinning wheel. This workshop is suitable for advanced beginner to experienced spinners. Student Supplies: A spinning wheel in good working order and all supporting equipment (oil, orifice hook, etc.), 1 or 2 bobbins, scissors, labels for samples, pen and paper for notes.
