Growing Profits with Data
On behalf of Olds College I would like to welcome you to AgSmart 2021, our twoday ag tech education expo showcasing the Olds College Smart Farm and cutting edge ag technologies from many of our industry partners. In 2020, Alberta’s agri-food sector was a $56 billion industry and is the largest employer in Alberta. Agriculture is a foundational industry for our region’s economic success. Working with industry, government, and producers, the Olds College Smart Farm is evolving agriculture practices through technology and data. We started the Smart Farm in June 2018 on a 100-acre parcel of land, today the Smart Farm has grown to cover our full 2,800 acre farming operation. We have over 100 partners involved on the Smart Farm, and currently have over 40 applied research projects on the go. The Smart Farm also provides our students with excellent work integrated learning opportunities as part of their studies at Olds College. During AgSmart I encourage you to check out the Olds College booth, in-field demonstrations and education sessions to learn about the many exciting research projects taking place on the Smart Farm, and to meet our in-house experts. I also hope you have a chance to connect with the over 100 exhibitors showcasing the latest agriculture technologies. Thank you for attending AgSmart. I hope you enjoy the show!
Sincerely,
Stuart Cullum

Growing Profits with Data
Welcome to AgSmart! Agri-Trade is pleased to once again collaborate with Olds College for this production. For many years one of the strategic goals of Agri-Trade was to provide educational opportunities for producers, but with very limited space and the sheer amount of equipment on display in November we found that difficult to achieve. Working with Olds College to provide an outdoor event that provides ample opportunities for in-field demos, plots and other educational forums has been a perfect solution for both organizations. We are pleased with the line-up of speakers and demonstrations and hope that you find your experience at the event valuable! Take the time to provide feedback and help us improve for future years and we hope to see you at AgSmart!
On behalf of the team at Agri-Trade,

How digitization is changing the face of farming Consider data like a cash crop and know there’s value to it, especially when organized and maintained. Jesse recommends investing in good computer infrastructure (digital barn) to both organize data and maintain ownership. For his clients, Jesse advises choosing a solid farm management software platform.
Jesse Hirsh
Did you know your data is a cash crop? Jesse Hirsh will tell you why. As a digital strategist from eastern Ontario, he helps agriculture entrepreneurs demystify technology – and profit from it. His insight on the digitization of farms can help you make the most of your data.
Here are some data tips for farm leaders like you: Have a digital barn “You’ve got a barn for your animals. You’ve got a drive shed for your equipment. What about your digital infrastructure? Have you thought about how you organize and secure your data?”
“As agriculture starts to become more digitized – as new equipment, new services, new markets – start to emerge, you’ll not only have the data to participate profitably but you’ll have the data to actually participate in the first place.” As examples, he points to supply chain tracking and animal health records.
“What about your digital infrastructure? Have you thought about how you organize and secure your data?”
Make data collection work for you From video surveillance in the barn to digital probes in the grain bin or potato storage, data monitoring can help you be ready for challenges. “It’s not just about the data, but how that data can train predictive models,” Jesse says. Based on data already collected in a grain bin, for example, data from a digital probe can indicate the conditions in which a rot may start, a fan may break, or an auger may not work. Data collection can actually help you anticipate problems before they arise. “The idea on a basic surveillance level is to allow you to focus your attention on the real problems because there’s a lot of really repetitive aspects
of farming,” Jesse explains. “If you have technology doing that for you, that might make things a little easier.” Track your production As consumer interest in food grows, public demand for transparency does too. Jesse says using digitized data collection can make your record-keeping easier. “Increasingly, the processes – how you raise your crops, how you raise your livestock – is
The easy way to manage your farm Can you save time? Yes. Enter your data once – use it from seeding to spraying to harvest. Can you track your cost of production? Sure. Track from year to year, field to field, or crop to crop. Can you track your inventory? Absolutely. Track from the field to the bin to the bank.

makes that possible, there’s going to be an emphasis on you to use it.” Creating your digital record of production steps can ease your recording process, while also opening the farm gate to consumers. The digital world in agriculture is expanding rapidly, Jesse notes. By embracing new digital tools now, you can make farming data more accessible, build data history, monitor farm details and create transparency.
