MICROCREDENTIALS Olds College Continuing Education and Corporate Training is excited to introduce online microcredentials. From beverage production to horticulture to cannabis — these self-directed, online microcredentials align with some of the most desired skills sought by top industries. Through earning microcredentials, individuals will be able to boost their careers with practical skills, recognize what they’ve learned while on the job, and share their skills with employers. From a Microcredential to a Digital Badge: Each microcredential may also be combined into digital badges which reflect a particular series of microcredentials that have been completed in one of the offered categories. Like individual microcredentials, learners have control over where they share digital badges, future employers are immediately able to view qualifications related to specific skills through Olds College’s digital wallet, MyCreds.ca. Upgrading microcredentials to badges allows students to further increase their knowledge and reflect their professional skills. Who is a Microcredential Best Suited For? That’s the wonderful thing about each microcredential, often they can be taken by anyone and do not require prerequisites or previous training. Microcredentials provide the opportunity for those currently in associated industries or those looking to enter the industry with the competencies they will need to take their career to the next level.

This certificate delves into the exciting world of technological applications for crop production. The Olds College Smart Ag certificate provides current students and graduates with the base knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the evolving ag industry. The certificate will increase competencies in global navigation satellite systems, geographic information systems, precision ag software programs, precision ag equipment, and autonomous systems.

Students will investigate foundations of control systems, electronics and practical applications in precision farming. Through experiential learning, students will identify and troubleshoot components within hardware devices used in precision farming.

This drone school, designed specifically for farmers and agronomists, will give students two full days of hands-on flight training for beginners. There are 101 uses for ag drones including both crop and livestock applications. During this training, there will be practical on farm examples used to help gain experience with mapping and the software involved. This exciting new online program prepares graduates for employment in the growing alcohol spirits distillation industry, or to support those already in the workplace. This program provides applicable and necessary hands-on training, and is committed to the promotion of sustainable production practices. Specific areas of instruction include fermentation theory and application, maturation and blending of spirits, sensory evaluation, and quality assurance and management in a distillery environment.

In this course, students will learn about the most common ingredients used in the production of distilled spirits. From the field to processing and through fermentation, the raw materials and their role in spirit production will be examined. Students should be comfortable with computers and should be prepared to locate and schedule a proctor to write the exam within the 2-week course dates. It is important to contact a proctor asap to avoid disappointment. The online recertification course cannot be taken consecutively (twice in a row). In-class recertification is required at least once in a 10-year period. Only able to register for the course during the year that your UTT/ UTW certificate expires.

If your recertification has lapsed, then you will be required to take the in-class session to recertify. EXPERIENCED HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SAFETY CERTIFICATION

Are you in need of training to start your career? If you get excited about the idea of running a large piece of machinery then our programs are an excellent place to start. Get the head start you need to find employment operating equipment in the construction, oil and gas, infrastructure or mining industries.

The Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate Program (HEO) provides you with the knowledge and skills required to join the workforce as an entry-level heavy equipment operator. In this 12-week program, plus a practicum, you will focus on jobsite fundamentals including: health, safety, and environmental training and awareness; equipment maintenance and operation; and application of earth moving techniques using hands-on operations. You will be trained to operate selected pieces of equipment, which may include: compactor, loader, dozer, grader, skid steer and excavator.

Industry is seeing a need for their experienced operators to have proficiency certification in order to either bid on projects or abide by insurance guidelines. While this is not legislated in Alberta at this time, Olds College has government approved Heavy Equipment Operator Curriculum. We are able to provide equipment specific Safety Certification. This is based upon our curriculum that has been developed and reviewed with Industry Stakeholders. Prerequisite hours for entry into the evaluations are EQUIPMENT BASED. We require that prior to us evaluating an operator, a sufficient amount of hours on the specific piece of equipment must be logged. Equipment includes loader, skid steer, dozer, grader and packer. Students that successfully complete the classroom work and evaluation will receive a certificate valid for 3 years.
