Next we’ll cover garden planning including raised beds, containers, and ways to extend the season. And finally we’ll look at the wide range of vegetables that can be grown starting with early cool-season choices like radishes and peas, through to warmer-season options like squash and tomatoes. Saving Seeds - Garden Self Sufficiency Before seed companies existed, gardeners around the world saved seeds from their crops to grow on the following season. New varieties grew out of careful selection of the best of the crop and were shared with fellow gardeners. The diversity of colour, shape, taste and use of each type of edible crop was astonishing. Today’s gardeners rarely learn the art and science of growing on some of their annual edible plants to full maturity and collect the seeds for next year. By missing out on this final piece we miss the great satisfaction of completing the cycle of plant life. This workshop will cover all aspects of seed saving, whether you are wishing to create new varieties or simply to be seed self-sufficient. It can be a follow on workshop from the Heirloom Edible Gardening workshop or be a standalone session, though would be best packaged into a full day.

For more information visit our website

Topics include, depending on how the sessions are structured: • Why save seeds • Types of seeds/plants – open pollinated versus hybrids; self versus cross pollination; annual, biennial and perennial plants • Methods of pollination to ensure fertile seeds are grown • Methods of isolation of different varieties to ensure that cross pollination does not occur • Selecting plants to be grown on for their seeds • Methods of seed collecting and cleaning, including dry and fleshy seeds • Storage of seeds, including viability of various seeds • Record keeping, including the importance for developing new varieties. • Best types of plants to collect seed from in Alberta • Specific seed saving techniques for various plant species.
