Message from the President Olds College celebrated many milestones, achievements and successes last year. We met new fundraising milestones with support of new and longtime supporters. Together with David Werklund and Susan Norman who gifted Olds College $16M, we made history receiving the largest personal donation in Alberta College’s history. Mountain View County, The Students Association of Olds College and the Olds College Alumni Association once again displayed their unwavering support of the College by presenting major gifts to the Beyond Capital Campaign. As a College, we celebrated the achievement of being ranked in the top 20 research colleges in the country, and being selected as one of three colleges to partner on a new education for employment project in Kenya, through Colleges and Institutes Canada. We also celebrated growth and success. Responding to student and industry demand we increased the first year intake of students in our Agricultural Management program. Thanks to the outstanding support of our donors we awarded over $490,000 in student awards during the 2016-2017 academic year, and raised significant funds for our Broncos Athletics program at our annual Fall Golf Classic. On behalf of everyone at Olds College, I would like to thank all of our donors, friends and partners for all of the support we received last year. The future of Old College is bright and we look forward to continuing to work together to achieve success. Stuart Cullum President, Olds College
Message from the Board Chair On behalf of my fellow Board members, I would like to express my gratitude to the many Olds College donors, alumni, staff and faculty that helped the College achieve great success in the 2016-2017 academic year. Through your unprecedented support we have made significant strides toward reaching our $40 million fundraising goal set out in our Beyond Capital Campaign. We continued to help students achieve success by providing financial assistance through donor sponsored student awards. Also through the generous support of donors, faculty and staff were able to respond to the needs of our students through accessing the Opportunities Fund for funding of much needed equipment. We are grateful for the outstanding support that we receive from our donors and partners. It is thanks to this support that Olds College can continue to be a leading post secondary institution focused in Agriculture and related sectors. Leona Staples Chair, Olds College Board of Governors 2 Olds College

Largest Personal Donation in Alberta Colleges’ History for Smart Agriculture Hub Acclaimed Canadian entrepreneur, oilfield industry leader and dedicated philanthropist David Werklund and his partner Susan Norman, gifted Olds College with $16M, the largest ever personal donation to an Alberta college or technical institution. The gift was announced at the College’s 2017 Gala. This transformational gift will result in the creation of the Werklund Agriculture Institute (WAI), a hub for leadership, education and applied research in Smart Agriculture. With a vision to be the world’s premier destination for an integrated agricultural leadership learning experience, the WAI will engage students, researchers and industry in smart and sustainable agriculture and agribusiness solutions, leadership and education to contribute to Western Canada’s leadership position as an agriculture and food powerhouse.
SAOC and OCAA Invest in Beyond David Werklund and Susan Norman were not the only donors recognized for supporting the Beyond campaign at Gala. The Students’ Association of Olds College (SAOC) and Olds College Alumni Association (OCAA) have also thrown their full support behind the campaign. Each organization has donated a staggering $1.25 million dollars to the Werklund Agriculture Institute.
“We held a referendum, asking students if they wanted to support the Beyond campaign, and the results were clearly in favour of supporting the initiative,” explains Cassidy Kirsch, President of SAOC. “The campaign will work towards enhancing student life for future students, and will contribute to the overall success of the College.” “We look forward to sharing our vision of the new Alumni Museum with you as we see the College move forward on this initiative,” remarks Nikki Szakaly, Alumni Association President. “We cannot wait to we see our new home on campus.”

Mountain View County Pledges Support to Werklund Agriculture Institute One of Olds College’s strongest supporters has once again committed to supporting Olds College students, programs and the viability of central Alberta. Mountain View County (MVC) has pledged its support to the College’s Beyond campaign through a $500,000 donation towards the Werklund Agriculture Institute (WAI).
“We do believe that there is a role for government to invest in education and for government to support the efforts of the private sector and private individuals when they do the same,” explains Bruce Beattie, Reeve of Mountain View County. “These public – private partnerships can be beneficial in providing the programming and infrastructure necessary to deliver the educational components that ensure today’s and tomorrow’s learners are prepared for the ever-evolving world of modern agriculture.”
Olds College Increases Capacity for Agricultural Management Program Olds College has created 50 additional first-year seats in their Agricultural Management program, increasing capacity from 75 first-year students to 125 students. The new 125 first-year student capacity was put in place for the fall 2017 start of the Agricultural Management program. By fall 2018 the program will have 250 students enrolled between first and second year.
“Our Agricultural Management program is one of our most popular programs at Olds College and has the highest number of enrolled students,” explains Dr. Barb Mulholland, Dean of the School of Agribusiness, Land & Fashion at Olds College. “Increasing access to our program demonstrates Olds College’s support for the agriculture industry and the confidence we have in our excellent program.” The decision to increase the capacity of the Agricultural Management program came on the heels of the College’s announcement of the establishment of the Werklund Agriculture Institute, that will position the College as a leader in smart agriculture.

Student Entrepreneur Continues to Make News Second year Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management student and budding entrepreneur, Alex Villeneuve, continued to make the news throughout the year. Mainstream media outlets including CBC, Maclean’s, Canadian Living, and The Western Producer all covered Alex and his company, Ceres Solutions Ltd. 8 Olds College
Alex’s idea came on his first day in the Olds College Brewery, when he saw that the spent grains from the brewery were considered a waste product. Alex began to use the spent grains as substrate to grow high protein gourmet mushrooms. Alex later discovered that he could create a high protein cattle feed from the same spent grains. Thanks to his success, Alex, who had won the 2016 TEC VenturePrize Student competition, was nominated for the 2017 TEC VenturePrize Fast Growth Award. Ceres Solutions Ltd. did not take home the Fast Growth Award, but was successfully voted as the People’s Choice Award winner for 2017!

The Coordination Agreement makes possible initiatives and programs such as student practicum rotations, research space and equipment sharing, collaboration between researchers, and opportunities for UCVM graduate students to teach animal health technology students at Olds College. The intent is to find ways to meet common needs while maximizing the use of resources to the best advantage of both schools. The College also announced a partnership with Saskatchewan Polytechnic that will explore the demand for new collaborative programming and applied research into smart agriculture. Specifically both parties will work together to provide a foundation of collaboration that will advance agricultural training, applied research and commercialization in Western Canada. 2016/17 Report to the Community 9

They also participated in Olds Fashioned Christmas and community Halloween activities. The Women’s Volleyball team hosted junior and senior high volleyball camps, had training sessions in surrounding communities, officiated local games, and hosted and refereed a Club Volleyball tournament at the Calgary Hitmen facility.
