Take a walk through the Olds College gardens to see both indigenous and non-indigenous pollinators at work, as well as look at garden design to demonstrate principles that are beneficial to pollinators. We are living in a world where we now put two houses in the same amount of space where previously we put just one. Never before have our neighbours lived so closely to us, and never before have we had the sort of gardening problems that this creates! In a culture that glorifies "instant gratification", people often plant whatever happens to grow the fastest, not what is necessarily best for that space. This is a real issue that needs to be addressed! Learn how to choose the right tree for the right spot, and learn when to use a shrub rather than a tree. Sometimes vines can be used to create effective screens, or tall growing annuals can do the work of a hedge. This will be an informative and useful class, especially if you've just bought a new house! Course # 31022 Jul 20, 2016 (1pm - 4pm) Instructor: Lyndon Penner $80

CACTUS AND YUCCAS Gardeners are often in search of plants that can handle hot, dry areas with poor soil and will still provide beauty and interest. The cactus family has much to offer in this regard, and a great many of them are perfectly prairie hardy. They have spectacular blossoms, fruit that attracts birds, and no pest or disease problems. What could be more perfect? There are also multitudes of cactus that can be placed outdoors for the summer and brought indoors for the winter. Some of them are truly spectacular houseplants and easy to care for. The yuccas are not related to cactus, but have similar needs and can occupy a similar space in the garden. They are underutilized and also have much to offer. If you are seeking plants that are both low maintenance and beautiful, you'll want to attend this class.

WILD & CRAZY VEGETABLES Growing your own food has never been more stylish or in vogue, but are you growing weary of the same old vegetables? Are you tired of tomatoes? Bored of beets? Join Lyndon for a fun class where you will explore some new looks for old vegetables (purple cauliflower, anyone?) as well as exploring some unusual food plants that have either never been popular, or have fallen out of favor. Many food plants are decorative as well as useful! This will be a very fun and interesting class. Course # 31024 Jul 21, 2016 (9am - 12pm) Instructor: Lyndon Penner $80

Course # 31023 Jul 20, 2016 (9am - 12pm) Instructor: Lyndon Penner $80

> Canada-Alberta Job Grant OVERVIEW

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is an employer-driven training program. This means that employers decide on who gets training and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees. Employers are required to use a third-party training provider to deliver the formal training either onsite, online, or in a classroom setting. The Canada Job Grant is part of the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta’s commitment to help address skill mismatches and ensure that employees are being trained in high-demand areas.

HOW THE CANADA-ALBERTA JOB GRANT CAN WORK FOR YOU: Example: Alberta Company Inc. is adjusting its workforce to align with a lower demand for their product. In order to remain competitive in the current economic climate, the business is looking at building the skills of its current workers. Employers know business success is tied to how well employees do their jobs. Skills training will provide both the employer and workers with the flexibility needed for success. To accomplish this, Alberta Company Inc. estimates its investment in combined training courses will be $12,000 per employee. The Canada-Alberta Job Grant could offset this amount by up to $8,000 per employee. It’s a win-win.

32 | Canada-Alberta Job Grant

WHY DO EMPLOYERS NEED THE CANADA-ALBERTA JOB GRANT? Despite fluctuations in the economy, employers will always need a workforce that is well-educated, highly skilled and productive.
