This entry-level program will provide you with the basic agronomic knowledge and skills required for many positions within the agriculture industry. You may lack specific knowledge in agronomy, or you may have agronomy experience in another country but require specific training in Western Canadian farming practices.

Crop Production Systems

Weed Fundamentals

An overview of basic botany and the production cycle for agricultural crops in Western Canada. You will learn the steps of land preparation, seeding, harvesting, and storage of grains, oilseeds, pulses, and hay crops. Their identity, uses, and markets will also be covered.

Insect & Disease Management

Gain the ability to identify common prairie weeds, understand their characteristics, and how these weeds impact various ecosystems. Understand the value of integrated weed management, and options for preventative, cultural and physical weed management.

Data Management for Field Scouting

Become acquainted with the major insect and disease species affecting field crops in the Canadian prairies. Understand the concept of integrated pest management and practices utilized to prevent and manage outbreaks.

Introductory Soils & Crop Nutrition This introductory course will provide you with an overview of basic soil formation, soil quality, crop nutrition, and fertilizer practices in Western Canada.

This course will be an introduction to the technologies used in data collection for field scouting. This will include GPS, GIS, digital photography, and data management systems.

Field School This Field School will be the capstone course of the Agronomy Certificate. In this course, you will demonstrate practical, hands-on application of the competencies gained in the prerequisite courses. All five other courses from the certificate must be completed prior to qualifying for Field School.

Students will integrate concepts and be able to make general recommendations regarding crop production. Integrated Pest Management

Soil, Water & Fertility Management

This course is designed to advance your knowledge and the application of integrated pest management concepts in agricultural cropping systems. Effective pest management is much more than just applying a pesticide. In this course, you will integrate all aspects of pest and crop management and see how ecological principles play an important role in pest management. The learning process will involve selected readings, assignments, discussions and a comprehensive term project.

Students in this course will study the potential negative effects of agricultural practices on soil and water resources and discuss beneficial management practices that can minimize environmental impact. They will also investigate advanced practices in fertility management, learn to diagnose nutrient deficiencies, and gain the knowledge required for development of effective fertilizer recommendations.

> RURAL FINANCE & ENTREPRENEURSHIP CERTIFICATE Agricultural Management Principles You will develop fundamental concepts of business management within the context of agriculture. These basic tools will provide the foundation for sound business decisions as they relate to all aspects and functional areas of the organization.

Agribusiness Accounting You will generate financial records and statements for agribusinesses using generally accepted accounting principles. Industry software is used and attention to unique industry issues is emphasized.

Agribusiness Financial Management

Principles of Marketing You will develop an understanding of marketing concepts, principles, and practices. > VETERINARY PRACTICE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE Advance your career in the veterinary industry! Veterinary Practice Managers are in demand. Upgrade your skills to allow you to move into a management role, manage with more confidence, and add exceptional value to the clinic that you work in.

This online certificate allows you to train while you work and customize your learning schedule to suit your busy lifestyle. > EQUINE SHORT COURSES

Driving School - Level I This clinic provides an understanding of the fundamentals of driving and basic horse psychology. Harness parts, equipment, safety problem solving, horse behaviour, communicating with the driving horse, and starting and retraining horses are all discussed. This course offers you hands-on experience in harnessing, ground driving, hooking to equipment, and driving a single horse and team. An excellent opportunity for the beginner and experienced driver of both light and heavy horses to expand their knowledge. ** Horses will be supplied. Friday evening is theory and demonstration, Saturday and Sunday are hands-on. Register early, small class size (12).

Driving School - Level II You are now comfortable driving a team, what comes next? If you love to drive and want to challenge yourself and your horses to learn more, then this clinic will get you where you want to be! This Level II clinic will allow you to safely gain the experience you need so that you will be able to drive three abreast, a unicorn, and four up. The instructor provides all of the equipment, horses, and harnesses. (You must be able to harness a team and drive a team of two in order to participate in this class.)

Equine First Aid & Basic Health Care

Equine Massage offers you one evening of theory and two days of handson massage for your horse. This course gives you, a horse owner, the ability to give your horse the comfort for sore muscles and related soft tissue stress, allowing it to return to work sooner. Description This program is a serious introduction to horse racing in Alberta and the basics of working as a racetrack groom. In addition, Authorized Assistants are able to apply pesticides listed in section 5(11) of the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides without direct supervision by a certified applicator. In this 2-day short course, participants will learn the fundamentals of brewing microbiology in a production brewery (or brewpub) to evaluate and control quality. An emphasis is placed on a hands-on environment experience where students will conduct ASBC methods of analysis and perform microbiological techniques. > TRADES & INDUSTRY Forklift Operator Certification (Basic Forklift Operating Skills Required) This condensed course teaches safe forklift operating procedures for current operators and evaluates the driver’s basic forklift handling skills. The course includes classroom instruction as well as hands-on training followed by a practical exam, which evaluates the operator’s ability to safely maneuver the forklift as well as transfer elevated loads. Successful completion of both the theory and practical component are required to receive certification.

This program is designed as a basic introduction into the world of humane handling and stunning. Participants will gain an understanding of the theory and applications related to the slaughter of all species that are processed in Canada. In addition to this, proper handling and animal welfare are covered in the course material.

Introduction/Animal Welfare On successful completion, you will be able to define the term "Animal Welfare", describe the origins and development of animal welfare, list the five freedoms, state when slaughterhouses were first regulated, and explain the purpose of quality assurance.

Utility Tree Worker Safety Training Are you currently employed in a position where you are clearing brush and trimming trees around power lines? This 2-week course can help you take your career to the next level as it is one of the components required to apply for certification as a Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer in Alberta with the Industrial Vegetation Management Association of Alberta (IVMAA).

Utility Tree Worker & Utility Tree Trimmer Recertification The Industrial Vegetation Management Association of Alberta, in association with the Work & Safety Standards Division of Alberta Labour requires certified Utility Tree Trimmers and Utility Tree Workers to complete a recertfication course within five (5) years after obtaining their initial certification and every five (5) years thereafter. You will be updated on current electrical safety standards and safety practices important to you on the job.

Prerequisite: You must have six months of related work experience in tree and brush work around power lines to register for this course. Walmart Canada employees from Calgary and Edmonton spent a day receiving customized Pesticide Dispenser Certification training to comply with Alberta Government regulations. Sixty-eight Walmart staff received a full day tutorial and completed an exam to prepare them for the upcoming summer gardening and landscaping season.

For several years, Olds College and Cargill have collaborated to provide a successful industry training program. Cargill employees participate in instructor-led online grain marketing and agronomy courses customized to meet the specific needs of Cargill, 2015 will see the 4th cohort complete the entire ‘Field Ready’ series of agronomy courses.

The Canadian Angus Association is bringing a group of members to the National Meat Training School for a short course on beef. This course will take members from evaluating live animals to watching a meat cutting demonstration and finally learning about carcass traits. The end goal for their members is a better understanding of the pasture to plate process.

PennWest contacted Olds College to provide a 3-day customized, industry specific training event PennWest employees will complete Fundamentals of Reclamation courses in order to further their knowledge base and enhance their ongoing Professional Development.
