QUICK FACTS

REBEL PRIDE

Former Ole Miss student-athletes can be found across the country, and even the world, proving successful in many areas of business, education, athletics, medicine, law, and the list goes on. Those who have donned the Red and Blue for the Rebels include former University of Mississippi Chancellor Dr. Robert C. Khayat; Louis Brandt, general partner of Brandt Interests; Mahesh Bhupathi, 11-time Grand Slam winner; Will Galtney, Chairman of Galtney Enterprises, Cedar Equities and Oxford Insurance Services; Dave Randall, head professional at River Hills Club, and many others, some of whom may be lesser known, but no less important in their communities and workplaces.

“My years on the Ole Miss Tennis team prepared and enabled me for life on the ATP Tour. Coming out of Tupelo, Miss., I was a very good regional player, but didn’t have a lot of national experience. Working with Billy Chadwick and all the other great players on the team while I was there helped to develop my tennis and take my game to the next level. When I was starting on the tour, an Ole Miss alum sponsored me to help kick start my career. Without Ole Miss I never would have had the privilege to play nine years on the ATP Tour. I am extremely happy to this day that I made the decision to stay in Mississippi and play for Ole Miss.” - DAVE RANDALL 1999 Ole Miss Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee Tennis Director/Head Pro - River Hills Club (Jackson, Miss.) “I am fortunate to have been successful in my business career. I attribute this in part to my experience as a team member of the 19551959 Ole Miss Tennis Team. Being part of an athletic team develops social skills and personal friendships that remain with you throughout your life. It has been my experience that individuals who played team sports in college had an edge over those who did not when competing as employees.”

“My time on the team at Ole Miss was the best. The combination of playing tennis and studying at a top university has served me well. Not only did it get me ready for the pro circuit, the skills I learned have enabled me to play tennis full time while pursuing my business opportunities. Thank you coach Chadwick, and go Rebs!” - Mahesh Bhupathi 1995 NCAA Doubles Champion 11-Time Grand Slam Champion

- LOUIS BRANDT 1993 Ole Miss Hall of Fame Inductee Managing General Partner of Brandt Interests, Ltd., President of Montana Capital, Ltd., and President of B.M.A., Ltd. “Ole Miss and the opportunity to play SEC tennis shaped my life for the years to come. In 1974 we had one of the best teams in the history of Ole Miss tennis. It was great fun, but it was the challenges that I remember best. To be tested on the court and find purpose and resolve is a lesson learned, and it has indeed been instrumental to my success in business.” - WILL GALTNEY 2006 Ole Miss Hall Of Fame Inductee Chairman of Galtney Enterprises, Cedar Equities and Oxford Insurance Services

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Ole Miss student-athletes not only have the opportunity to play in one of the best conferences in the nation, they also attend a university that is world-renowned for its academics. Under Karen Schiferl, the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Support, the Office of StudentAthlete Academic Support has made great strides in improving the environment for Ole Miss student-athletes. Numerous fulltime academic counselors, learning specialists and tutors assist Schiferl, and the $5 million FedEx Academic Support Center, completed in May 2007, provides the perfect environment for learning. Last year, the Rebels earned the Chancellor’s Cup for the seventh year

in a row, as the men’s varsity team with the highest cumulative grade point average. Adrian Forberg Skogeng, Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Marcel, who posted a 3.55 grade point average last year, was one of only five players in the nation to earn All-America honors and be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete. The Thiemann brothers also made the SEC Academic Honor Roll, while Forberg Skogeng made the SEC Freshman Honor Roll. With Ole Miss athletics taking its place among the best in the nation, the StudentAthlete Academic Support staff hopes that Ole Miss graduates of today have a great impact in the future of tomorrow. The Rebels received the Chancellor’s Cup for the seventh straight year in 2010, as the men’s varsity team with the highest cumulative grade point average.

“With a full staff and a fantastic facility, Ole Miss student-athletes are provided with every opportunity to excel in the classroom and succeed in life following graduation. Over the past few years, our student-athletes are graduating at a higher rate than the general student population, which shows the commitment of these young people and the emphasis being placed on academics by our coaches and staff.” - Karen Schiferl, Senior Associate AD for Academic Support

THE UNIVERSITY OF

MISSISSIPPI

Ole Miss was the center of worldwide attention as the host of the first presidential debate of 2008 between Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama, held Sept. 26 at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts on campus.

Located in the heart of Oxford, just blocks away from the bustling Oxford Square is The University of Mississippi, the state's oldest public institution of higher learning. Known to thousands of passionate alumni, students and friends as Ole Miss, it is building on more than 160 years of leadership and innovation in education, research and service to strengthen the economic, social and cultural foundations of the state and region. Beating out Ivy League schools across the country, Ole Miss was recognized as one of “the most appealing” universities in the country in a 2010 book that placed our campus at the top of their list of 11 colleges doing their job well.

THE GROVE

Regarded as one of the world’s top sporting traditions, tailgating on football Saturdays at Ole Miss is one of those activities that every sports fan should take the opportunity to indulge in at some point in their life. Ten acres of lush green grass, watched over by majestic oak trees in the middle of the Ole Miss campus, are transformed from a tranquil picnic spot into tailgating paradise when thousands of football fans crowd into every corner of the land. Weaving through the myriad of red and blue tents, one is bound to encounter a few of the most extravagant set-ups in all of tailgating - fine china, chandeliers, big-screen satellite TVs. Of course, many tents are a bit simpler, but the unique atmosphere still encourages sundresses and high heels for the ladies and coats and ties for the men. Food and drink are abundant. “Hotty Toddy” can always be heard chanted among the trees. Champions walk through it. There is nowhere else like it. It is ... The Grove.

Among the worthwhile activities that Ole Miss studentathletes regularly participate in as part of the CHAMPS Life Skills - Rebel Ready program are assisting with reading programs at local schools such as “Reading with the Rebels”, visiting patients in area hospitals, being mentors to elementary school students, visiting senior adults for “Jeopardy Night” at local retirement centers, holding several “Meet the Rebels” days throughout the year, and giving numerous talks on subjects such as drug awareness and staying in school to area students.

BILLY CHADWICK

HEAD COACH | 28th SEASON | BELHAVEN COLLEGE | 1974 2009 USPTA National College Coach of the Year Three-time SEC Coach of the Year Billy Chadwick ranks as one of the top collegiate head coaches and is recognized as one of the most successful head coaches in the history of Ole Miss sports. For his contributions to the world of tennis as both a player and a coach, Chadwick was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in July of 2006. With his fifth SEC Championship in 2009, Chadwick now trails only legendary Ole Miss football coach John Vaught in SEC titles won. Vaught won six conference titles in 1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962 and 1963. A Mississippi native, Chadwick is one of only eight active Division I men’s tennis coaches to have led a team to the NCAA Championship Finals. Furthermore, he is one of only three active Division I coaches to have taken his team to three or more NCAA Final Fours. In his tenure at Ole Miss, he has led the Rebels to the NCAA Championships 18 times, and the Rebels have become a mainstay among the elite teams in the national rankings. Chadwick began his coaching career at Ole Miss as the women’s tennis coach, laying the foundation for the excellent team they have today. In 1982, he led the Lady Rebels to the SEC finals, AIAW Nationals and the program’s first top 20 national ranking. In 1983, he took over the men’s program, that at the time was last in the conference. In 28 years at the helm, the program has grown to unprecedented heights, winning SEC and NCAA Championships. 16 | REBEL TENNIS 2011

Chadwdick did perhaps his finest coaching job in 2010 as the Rebels lost four starters from the 2009 SEC Champion squad, including NCAA Champion Devin Britton. Furthermore, senior Kalle Norberg was lost for the year with an injury. The Rebels captured their ninth consecutive SEC West Championship, advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament, made their 17th straight NCAA appearance and ended the year ranked No. 19 nationally. Individually, Marcel Thiemann became the 25th AllAmerican reaching the NCAA singles quarterfinals. The 2009 season was a remarkable year for the Rebels on and off the hard courts. Ole Miss won the overall SEC Championship after going undefeated, repeated as SEC Tournament Champion and won its eighth straight SEC West title. The Rebels finished the year ranked No. 4 in the nation, advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight. Mississippi native Devin Britton became the youngest player ever and the first Ole Miss player to win the NCAA Singles Championship. Individual honors included three All-Americans and five All-SEC selections. Chadwick was named the USPTA National College Coach of the Year and earned his third SEC Coach of the Year honor. Off the court, Bram ten Berge was named the Boyd McWhorter SEC ScholarAthlete of the Year as the top male student-athlete in the entire conference. He also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. ADMINISTRATION

DR. DANIEL W. JONES | CHANCELLOR

PETE BOONE | ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

From an early age, Dr. Daniel W. Jones knew his career aspirations revolved around medicine and leadership. And while a physician leading a comprehensive university isn’t a common arrangement, Jones’ appointment as the 16th chancellor of the University of Mississippi is no surprise to anyone familiar with his record of leadership and achievements at the UM Medical Center in Jackson and the American Heart Association. Jones became chancellor on July 1, 2009, and oversees the campuses in Oxford, Jackson, Southaven, Tupelo and Grenada. Vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine since 2003, Jones served as the Medical Center’s chief executive officer, overseeing five schools and the health system. Under his leadership, UMMC restructured its clinical enterprise to create a more agile, market-responsive organization focused on quality, efficiency and clinical leadership. The work resulted in a turnaround in financial performance and selection as one of the Thomson Top 100 Hospitals in America. Jones’ leadership team also expanded the Medical Center’s commitment to minority scholarships, rural medicine and the elimination of health disparities. Enrollment of underrepresented medical students increased 80 percent in five years. They also led a campaign that raised $53 million, expanded the medical school’s class size from 100 students to 120 students per class and reorganized the medical faculty clinical practice plan from 17 individual practice groups to a single, unified one, facilitating more efficient management and improved patient care. Under his watch, the Medical Center’s research enterprise has been reinvigorated with completion of the Arthur C. Guyton Research Center, acquisition of funding for a research park and increased research funding. A native Mississippian, Jones graduated from Mississippi College in 1971, earned his M.D. in 1975 at UMMC and completed his residency in internal medicine there in 1978. He had a private practice in Laurel, then went to Korea as a medical missionary in 1985. He returned to the UM Medical Center as a faculty member in 1992 and was named the school’s Herbert G. Langford Professor of Medicine in 1998. He directed the hypertension division and led many clinical studies funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of health. He played a crucial role in the acquisition of funding from NHLBI to create the Jackson Heart Study and was its first principal investigator. As the only large scale study of cardiovascular risk factors in African-Americans, Jones had to overcome the understandable reluctance of African Americans to participate in research and to build consensus among the three participating institutions - Jackson State University, Tougaloo College and UMMC. Neither had ever collaborated in such a massive undertaking. The new chancellor began volunteering for the American Heart Association 20 years ago and became its national president in 2007-2008. He was one of the early voices in AHA leadership to call attention to the growing problem of childhood obesity and heart disease in women. He was AHA’s national spokesperson on high blood pressure. Jones is married to Lydia Channell Jones, also a Mississippi College graduate. They have two children, Jennifer Jones Flechas of Oxford and Jason Jones of Clinton.

In his 12 years as the University of Mississippi’s Director of Athletics, Pete Boone has overseen dramatic facility improvements across the athletics department, allowing Ole Miss student-athletes and teams to compete at the highest levels in the nation’s most competitive conference. Boone’s personal relationship with Ole Miss runs deep, beginning in 1968 when the Grenada, Miss., native first stepped on the Oxford campus as a center on the Rebel football team, playing first for legendary coach John Vaught and then coach Billy Kinard as he earned three letters (1970-72). During Boone’s 12 years as Director of Athletics, Ole Miss has experienced continued growth from adding sports to his overseeing in excess of $140 million in athletics improvements. A number of projects are currently in the final planning stages or recently completed as Ole Miss continues to meet the challenges of the 21st century both on and off the field of competition.

Recent facility and or planned upgrades include: • Plans underway for $3 million renovation of the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, site of many men’s and women’s NCAA Regionals. • $13 million Basketball Practice Facility completed in December of 2009. • $18 million renovation of Oxford-University Stadium completed prior to the 2009 season. The stadium boasted the highest average attendance of the 2009 postseason with 9,882 fans per game. The Rebels have hosted two of the top 10 crowds for a Super Regional held at an on-campus facility in NCAA history. • Installation of a $6 million integrated system featuring a large high definition video display at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field in 2008. • FedEx Student-Athlete Academic Support Center opened in May of 2007. • Athletics Administration Building completed in October of 2007. Under Boone’s watch, the athletics department remains committed to young men and women student-athletes and their parents, promising to provide a positive environment of support to help them achieve their maximum potential in their academic and athletic pursuits. The FedEx Student-Athlete Academic Support Center’s front-line technology and classroom environment provide Ole Miss student-athletes one of the best learning environments in the country. While Boone’s focus has been to provide student-athletes, coaches and administrative staff with every opportunity to succeed, he is also representing Ole Miss and the Southeastern Conference on a number of regional and national committees. In August of 2008, Boone was elected Chairman of the SEC Athletics Directors Committee, succeeding long-time chair Larry Templeton of Mississippi State, who was retiring as athletics director. He is in his fifth and final year as a member of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance (CAP) and serves as Chairman of its Subcommittee on Appeals. He recently served as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Academic Enhancement Group. Boone, a 1972 graduate of Ole Miss with a bachelor’s degree in banking and finance, is married to the former Scottye Howard of Grenada. The couple has two sons, Taylor and Lexie. Taylor is married to the former Laurel Joachim of Atlanta, Ga. Taylor and Laurel have two future Ole Miss Rebels -- a son, Morgan (8) and a daughter, Pharis Louise (3). Lexie is married to the former Kim Deuel of Binghamton, N.Y.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS IN 2011 Expectations are high as always for Ole Miss and with good reason. Five of the top six from last year’s SEC West Champion team are back. Senior Kalle Norberg, returns to the lineup, and the Rebels have added a talented freshmen class. Ole Miss won the SEC Western Division Championship for the ninth year in a row, earned their 17th straight NCAA appearance and finished ranked top 20 nationally in 2010. The Rebels played the entire 2010 season without Norberg (2009 SEC Tournament MVP), one of the nation’s premier clutch players. “It was a difficult assignment playing without Kalle,” head coach Billy Chadwick said. “Every player accepted the challenge and improved with each match. By the time the season ended we were a very good team. We’re in hopes to start where we left off last year and build on it. We feel like we are one of the top teams in the nation, and we need to work really hard to make it back into the top 10.” Last season’s success is reflected in standout Marcel Thiemann. Marcel established himself as the Rebels’ No. 1 player. He earned All-America and All-SEC honors and reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals. Also a standout in doubles, he is presently ranked No. 2 in the nation with his twin brother, Chris Thiemann. The twins 24 | REBEL TENNIS 2011

posted an impressive 10-1 record in the SEC in 2010. “Marcel and Chris are two of the most improved players in the nation. They have been an integral part of our success the last two years, and we expect them to have a big year this season in both singles and doubles,” Chadwick said. Chris provided the Rebels with many memorable matches in 2010, most notably against Alabama, as he won a third set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles to clinch the team’s ninth consecutive SEC West title. Also leading the way for the Rebels is senior Tucker Vorster. Vorster has widely been regarded as one of the country’s top doubles players, but in 2010, he became a major contributor in singles as well, earning All-SEC honors while playing No. 2 singles. This past fall, Vorster captured the ITA Southern Regional to earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor. “Tucker is one of these guys that you like having on your team. He is the vocal leader. He has a lot of enthusiasm, and he can back it up with the racket. He’s a player. He’s a great team person. He’s great fun to be around, and he keeps the guys loose. He’s a winner,” Chadwick said. Perhaps one of the most improved players on the team is sophomore Jonas Lutjen, who gained valuable experience as a freshman playing in the top half of the

lineup. “If you look at Jonas’ results last year, he was competitive in every match playing No. 3 singles as a freshman. We’re anticipating him to have a great spring.” Sophomore Adrian Forberg Skogeng played a significant role in the Rebels success in 2010. He clinched four wins including the Auburn and Mississippi State matches that helped the Rebels claim the SEC West title. “Adrian is an outstanding competitor and had a great year as a freshman. His strength is his determination and consistency, and he has proven to be a very tough out in the lineup,” Chadwick said. The Rebels are looking forward to the return of Norberg. Norberg has been a major factor in the team’s success as his record shows. When he has been on the court, the Rebels have won three SEC West titles, two SEC Tournament Championships and the overall SEC Championship in 2009. Norberg was the only player to go undefeated in league play in 2009 and earned SEC Tournament MVP honors. “He’s a winner. We are looking at Kalle having the best year that he’s ever had,” Chadwick said. “He’s fully recovered and striking the ball as well as anybody on the team.” Norberg enters the 2011 season with a 59-6 dual

match record. Add to that his stellar 27-3 SEC record, and you can see how important he is to the team. Just ask Vorster. “Coach plans on playing Kalle and I together in doubles,” said Vorster. “Like I’ve said so many times, he’s the ‘banker’ on the team. When he takes the court, we can count on him for a win. It’s just great to have him back.” In addition to the returning team members are freshmen Johan Backstrom and Alex Durham. Backstrom continues Ole Miss’ tradition of great players from Sweden. He was ranked No. 3 in his age division (top two players are on the professional tour) and ranked No. 21 in the Swedish Men’s Rankings. He hails from the same hometown (Uppsala) as Norberg and is expected to make an immediate impact in singles and doubles. “Johan is one that you’re going to be seeing a lot of. He’s a strong singles and doubles player with good size (6-5),” Chadwick said. “We’re expecting big things from him.” Providing quality depth for the Rebels is the addi-

2010 REVIEW

NCAA

Ole Miss earned its 17th consecutive NCAA appearance in 2010 and traveled to College Station, Texas for the first and second rounds. The Rebels defeated TCU 4-1 in the first round before falling in a close battle to No. 10 Texas A&M 4-2 in the second round. The Aggies appeared to have all the momentum after winning a close doubles point and then taking the first sets on four singles courts. But the Rebels wouldn’t go away without a fight. Tucker Vorster evened the match with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. After A&M went back ahead with a win at No. 6, sophomore Marcel Thiemann knocked off one of the nation’s top players at No.1 singles to keep the Rebels in it with the remaining three matches going to three sets. The match ended when A&M won at No. 5 in the third set to clinch the victory. Marcel Thiemann competed in the NCAA Singles Championship advancing to the quarterfinals and also teamed with his brother, Chris, in the doubles.

A CHAMPION ON TOUR

MAHESH BHUPATHI 11-Time Grand Slam Champion Mahesh Bhupathi, a former NCAA Doubles Champion at Ole Miss, has confirmed his place in tennis history. In 2011, Bhupathi teams back up with countryman Leander Paes. The two made a successful return to the courts, winning their home country title in Chennai and falling just short of the one grand slam doubles title that eludes the pair, the Australiian Open. On their way to the finals, Bhupathi won his 600th career match since turning pro in 1995. Only 16 other players in the Open Era have reached the milestone. In 2009, Bhupathi paired with fellow Indian Sania Mirza to capture the Mixed Doubles Championship at the Australian Open for his 11th grand slam title. He and fellow doubles partner, Mark Knowles, ended the year ranked No. 3 in the ATP Rankings. The duo teamed up to reach the finals at the Australian and U.S. Opens and won the title at Barcelona, after winning four titles in their first year together in 2008. Bhupathi finished in the Top 30 individually in the Stanford ATP Doubles Rankings in 2007 for the seventh consecutive year and 11th overall as well as earning his 40th career doubles title. Bhupathi teamed with Martina Hingis in 2006 to capture the Australian Open Mixed Doubles title, bringing his total to 10 career grand slams. In 2005, he teamed with Mary Pierce to claim the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon and then won his fifth mixed doubles title when he and Daniela Hantuchova captured the U.S. Open Championships. In 2004, Bhupathi finished the season ranked in the Top 10 (No. 5 in the ATP Doubles Race with Russia’s Max Mirnyi and No. 7 individually) for the fourth consecutive year and sixth time in seven years. In addition, he won five doubles titles and more than 50 matches for the third year in a row. His five titles came with four different partners. Bhupathi earned a spot in the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston (with Mirnyi). Bhupathi also teamed with Mirnyi to reach the quarterfinals at the 2004 Australian Open and the semifinals at the French Open. He also teamed up with former partner and fellow countryman, Leander Paes, to win the Master Series Toronto and reach the semifinals at the Olympics in Athens, Greece. Bhupathi teamed with Mirnyi in 2003 to win five of an ATP-high nine finals and finished No. 2 in the ATP Team Race standings. The two reached the finals at Wimbledon. In 2002, Bhupathi added two more grand slam titles to his impressive resume. He teamed with Russia’s Elena Likhovtseva to win the Mixed Doubles title at Wimbledon and two months later, he and doubles partner Max Mirnyi won the U.S. Open Championship. In 1999, Bhupathi and his partner, Leander Paes, became the first doubles duo in the modern era to reach the finals of all four grand slam events in a calendar year. The pair won the French Open Championships and one month later captured the most prestigious of the grand slams, Wimbledon. In addition to winning two doubles grand slam titles in 1999, Bhupathi also captured the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Championship. After not playing together much in 2000 due to injuries, Bhupathi and Paes re-

turned to the courts together in 2001 and captured their third grand slam title and second French Open Championship. In 14 years on the tour, Bhupathi has won almost five million dollars in prize money and captured 45 doubles titles. Bhupathi became the first player in the history of India to win an ATP Grand Slam title when he won the Mixed Doubles title at the French Open Championships in the summer of 1997. While at Ole Miss, Bhupathi led the Rebels to the NCAA team finals. He became the first Rebel tennis player to win an NCAA title when he teamed with Ali Hamadeh to capture the Doubles Championship in 1995 and ended the year as the No. 1 doubles team in the nation. In addition, Bhupathi was an All-American, 1995 SEC Singles Champion and SEC Player of the Year. Bhupathi credits his success to his college days at Ole Miss. “Although I had good results in junior tennis, I was not ready for the pros physically and mentally,” Bhupathi said. “I credit coach Chadwick for much of my success. I really enjoyed my time at Ole Miss and I still stay in touch with my former teammates.” In 2010, Bhupathi became the first Ole Miss player to be inducted into the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame.

ATHLETIC SUPPORT

OLE MISS SPORTS MEDICINE Prevention. Treatment. Rehabilitation. Education. Those are the four primary phases of athletic training, and the Ole Miss Sports Medicine staff strives to fulfill all four areas when working with the student-athletes on a daily basis. “Our Athletic Trainers are allied healthcare professionals and we strive to provide quality healthcare based on the latest in medical research,” said Shannon Singletary, Senior Associate Shannon Singletary Athletic Director for Sports Medicine/Strength & Conditioning. Senior Associate AD “By doing this we hope to not only provide our athletes with a better chance of winning on the field, but also give them an opportunity to lead a healthy lifestyle.” Ole Miss student-athletes are offered the best care possible by the Sports Medicine staff that includes nine full-time athletic trainers, five graduate assistants and several student assistants. The staff serves the student-athletes nearly around-the-clock and at numerous facilities on campus. The Athletic Trainers begin treatments and rehabilitation as early as 6:30 a.m. and are available until the last student-athlete is through. There are currently six athletic training facilities on campus. The staff treats out of two primary athletic training rooms, in the Indoor Practice Facility and the Starnes Athletic Training Center, with four other satellite athletic training rooms, located at Tad Smith Coliseum, Basketball Practice Facility, Gillom Center and Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The IPF, Starnes Center and BPF training rooms are stocked with equipment such

as stationary bikes, hand weights, therapeutic modalities, and recent technology like underwater treadmills and Biodex testing equipment. Each component is strategically designed to not only give the student-athletes the best care, but also to aid in returning them to competition as quickly and safely as possible. Singletary, though, said the emphasis is on the student-athlete's health, first and foremost. Jon Williams is in his first year as a graduate assistant working with the men’s tennis and both men’s and women’s golf teams. Ole Miss Sports Medicine has strong working relationships with local physicians and Baptist Memorial Hospital, located less than five minutes from the campus. In addition, specialists from the University's Medical Center are often consulted.

REBEL READY Rebel Ready - CHAMPS Life Skills is a well-rounded program for student-athletes to develop individual skills necessary to lead successful lives and become leaders for our communities and nation. The program consists of five vital components: • The Commitment to Academic Excellence is promoted through a full range of services that include orientation, advising, tutoring, academic skills training and the recognition of academic excellence. • The Commitment to Athletic Excellence is developed by the department’s 10 women and eight men intercollegiate sports teams. The sponsorship is based on equity and compliance to all University, NCAA and Southeastern Conference rules and regulations.

• The Commitment to Career Development is a joint effort of the Ole Miss Athletic Department and Career Center. The goal is to prepare student-athletes for their transition out of sports and into the career development process. Career development components of the program include special workshops and programs for student-athletes and a senior resume brochure. • The Commitment to Personal Development is promoted through life skills and personal development seminars and sponsorship of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. • The Commitment to Service is promoted—in conjunction with the University Counseling Center—through many community service projects throughout the year. The Ole Miss student-athletes are very involved in the community and the community service program continues to grow.

NCAA COMPLIANCE Who Is A Prospect?

A prospective student-athlete is defined as an athlete who has begun classes for the ninth grade. However, it is possible for a younger student to be considered a prospect if the institution (or a representative of its athletic interests) provides the student (or family member) benefits not provided to prospects generally.

institution for dates. There is no limit to the number of times a prospect may visit a campus at his/ her own expense. Prospects may receive an expense paid visit ("official visit") only after they have begun classes for their senior year and have registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and submitted transcripts and test scores to the institution. Prospects are limited to a maximum of five official visits with no more than one per institution.

Who May Contact a Prospect During the Recruiting Process?

What is Considered "Being Recruited?"

All in-person, on and off-campus recruiting contacts with a prospect (or family) are limited to authorized institutional staff members or full-time enrolled students at the institution. All other persons are prohibited from engaging in any personal, telephone, or written contact with the prospect (or family) for encouraging participation in the institution's athletics programs.

How and When May a Prospect Be Contacted?

In all sports, a prospect may not be contacted in-person, off-campus until their senior year in high school. Prospects may not receive correspondence from an institution until their junior year in high school (exception: men’s basketball - June 15 after sophomore year). Questionnaires and camp brochures may be sent prior to the junior year.

When May a Prospect Visit an Institution's Campus?

Prospects may visit an institution's campus at their own expense ("unofficial visit") and receive complimentary passes to an athletic contest anytime except during "dead periods." Check with the 56 | REBEL TENNIS 2011

A prospect is considered recruited if a coach, staff member or representative of the institution's athletic interest (booster) attempts to persuade a prospect (or family member) to enroll at their institution and participate in the athletics program. A student is considered "recruited" if any of the following actions are taken: 1) the institution provides the prospect with an "official visit" (i.e., expenses paid) to its campus; 2) a coach arranges for an in-person, off-campus (home or prospect's school) encounter with the prospect; 3) transportation to campus by a coach or booster; 4) receiving more than one telephone call from a coach for recruiting purposes.

What Should a Prospect Do During the Recruiting Process?

Prospects should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center during their junior year in high school. Contact your high school guidance counselor or call the NCAA Eligibility Center at (877) 262-1492 for more information. The NCAA publishes "The Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete," which may be purchased from the NCAA. FEDEX ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER FedEx Corporation announced on April 14, 2005, a $2.5 million gift over five years to The University of Mississippi to create an academic support center for student-athletes. In May 2007, the vision became reality as the FedEx Student-Athlete Academic Support Center opened its doors to Rebel athletes. The center provides state-of-the-art computer facilities and space for study halls and tutoring for men and women studentathletes, as well as additional classrooms for all students. “FedEx has always been a strong supporter of educational initiatives at all levels,” said Mike Glenn, executive vice president, marketing development and corporate communications. “This contribution to The University of Mississippi is an extension of our commitment to helping improve the academic resources available to students, and student-athletes in particular.” Glenn said FedEx and Ole Miss are committed to providing a strong academic foundation to enable students to reach their full potential. The money has been used to renovate a portion of the Starnes Athletic Center—which formerly housed football locker rooms, a weight room and training facilities—next to VaughtHemingway Stadium on All-American Drive. The 22,500-square-foot building now houses the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Support, including offices, conference rooms, 20 large and small group tutoring rooms, a large study area, a multi-media classroom, computer lab and 150-seat high-tech auditorium. The project was completed in May 2007 with an approximate cost of $5 million. “American public universities are the best in the world largely because of the generosity of American corporations,” said then-Ole Miss Chancellor Robert Khayat. “FedEx sets the standard for philanthropy by which others are measured. In this case, Ole Miss student-athletes are the primary beneficiaries, but all our students will benefit and, as a result, our entire state benefits.” In addition to its latest gift to the University, FedEx supports several endowed scholarship programs, the Whitten Chair in Law, the Lott Leadership Institute, the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation and William Faulkner’s historic home, Rowan Oak.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION BUILDING Continuing the trend of athletics facility growth that has occurred under Pete Boone, the University provided the Rebels' leadership with a new state-of-the-art home with the opening of the Athletics Administration Building in January 2008. Construction began in August 2006 on the approximately $4.5 million facility, which put all the various facets of the Ole Miss administration under one roof for the first time. Each of the major departments - business, compliance, facilities, media relations, marketing/productions and the UMAA Foundation - has its own wing with spacious offices. Formerly the location of the John White Building and home of the university Physical Plant, the Athletics Administration Building is conveniently situated north of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and close to other athletics facilities, providing a central location for coaches and student-athletes. Highlighting the amenities is an advanced video production studio and control room, which operates the production in the TV studio as well as on the video boards at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Tad Smith Coliseum and Oxford-University Stadium. The multi-functional video area is high definition throughout. For visitors walking through the lobby, the building is enhanced with cutting-edge graphics and images from Ole Miss history. The walls are covered with photos of great athletes, ecstatic crowds and memorable publications, while flat screen, plasma televisions are available throughout the facility. With key personnel all under one roof, the Athletics Administration Building provides a much needed cohesiveness to the everyday operation of the University as it strives to achieve its overall goal for success in athletics.

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY Among the finest facilities in all of college athletics, the Ole Miss Indoor Practice Facility is the crown jewel in the growing athletics compound surrounding Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. “With the addition of this magnificent indoor facility, we find that Ole Miss athletes and coaches have the opportunity to practice and play games in state-of-the-art facilities, on the finest fields and courts,” then-Ole Miss Chancellor Robert C. Khayat said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 22, 2004. “They are in a position of being nationally competitive. As we look forward to finding out what is going to happen in athletics at this university and with the university in general, we can move forward knowing that we have provided the infrastructure and facilities that needed to be provided.” Located beside the South End Zone of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the Rebels moved into the spectacular $18 million multi-purpose structure in fall 2004. The 150,000-square-foot enclosure is a result of UM's Commitment to Excellence in Athletics Campaign, a $35 million initiative to upgrade the university's athletics programs. In addition to the IPF, the campaign has also resulted in a recently built golf facility, renovations to C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum and a recently constructed track and field complex, which sits just south of the IPF. Also, an endowment has been created to fund scholarships and maintain the new facilities. Numerous Rebel supporters contributed financially to the construction of the indoor practice facility, including legendary Rebel quarterback Archie Manning. In May 2004, former Ole Miss running back Deuce McAllister donated $1 million toward the building of the facility. The architects of the facility were Ferguson & Associates of Jackson.

STARNES ATHLETIC TRAINING CENTER Every aspect of Ole Miss Athletics is geared toward the success of its student-athletes. The Michael S. Starnes Athletic Training Center provides a valuable role in the development and display of that success. The multi-purpose Starnes Center has undergone many transformations through the years. It currently houses Ole Miss Sports Medicine, FCA and CHAMPS Life Skills headquarters and includes a 10,000-square-foot weight room and a sizeable memorabilia collection. Formerly the Doc Knight Field House, the Training Center stands just north of VaughtHemingway Stadium and within walking distance of Tad Smith Coliseum, Swayze Field and the main athletics office complex. The primary training room on the Ole Miss campus is used by several Rebel sports. The training area has four offices for the athletic training staff, room for at least 13 treatment tables, six taping stations and countless rehabilitation equipment. It also contains a wet room with a whirlpool that help make up an environment for top-notch care and injury prevention for Rebel athletes. The facility extends to the east into a similar structure which holds a massive weight room, a lobby, conference room and offices. Connected to the west end is the FedEx Academic Support Center, a state-of-the-art complex opened in May 2007. Starnes, the building’s benefactor, donated $1 million toward the facility as part of an extensive $2.5 million renovation in 1995. A 1968 Ole Miss graduate, Starnes is president of Tennessee California Express, Inc., a transportation company. Much of the history and the many accolades of Rebel athletics are displayed in two rooms on the second floor of the Starnes Center that make up Hollingsworth-Manning Hall. Dr. Jerry Hollingsworth, an Ole Miss alumnus and general practitioner in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., joined forces with former Rebel quarterback Archie Manning to establish the recruitment/memorabilia center. It is faithfully maintained and updated by Langston Rogers, Senior Associate Athletics Director Emeritus. OLEMISSSPORTS.COM | 57

PALMER/SALLOUM TENNIS CENTER

HOME OF 10 NCAA REGIONALS HOME OF 2003 SEC MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 2000 SEC WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Mississippi’s Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center ranks as one of the nation’s finest collegiate facilities. It was completed in 1990 and has served as host to the SEC Championships, Women’s ITA South Regional Championships, the USTA National Interscholastic Championships and NCAA Men’s and Women’s Regionals. Located in the heart of campus, it is surrounded by towering magnolia trees and is regarded as perhaps the most beautiful in the country. The complex combines the Greek revival architecture that is predominant on the Oxford campus, housing a 500-seat stadium with restrooms, dressing rooms, offices and a team meeting room. Courtside pavilions provide additional seating for 300, giving fans the opportunity to be right on top of the action. The varsity facility has nine championship courts all with lighting, as well as a computerized scoreboard and message center. Ole Miss men’s head coach Billy Chadwick, who serves as the tennis center director, has steered the development of the center from its inception. “Our objective was to build a state of the art tennis center that would enhance and compliment the beauty of the campus,” Chadwick said. “With our new pavilion and landscaping, it is a showplace for the University.” The primary benefactor is John N. Palmer, a 1956 alumnus of Ole Miss, who is currently the U.S. Ambassador to Portugal. He was joined in this effort by Mitchell

Salloum Jr., a businessman from Gulfport, who is a 1955 alumnus of the University. The center honors the late Mitchell Salloum, Sr., a 1926 law graduate and a 196061 President of the Ole Miss Alumni Association. Additional funds were provided by donations to the Drive for Athletics at Ole Miss. Donors who made significant gifts toward other parts of the stadium include Louis Brandt, Jack Dunbar and William Galtney. The Ole Miss tennis programs received another boost when the new multi-sport indoor facility opened in 1997. The facility contains three indoor tennis courts, allowing both tennis teams to play all their matches in Oxford. The Ole Miss tennis indoor complex is one of the finest in the nation. Plans are in the works to expand the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The $2 million expansion will compliment the already stunning facility by adding seats and enhancing the player and coach areas; including the locker rooms, study area, and coaches’ offices. “When Palmer/Salloum was built, the objective of creating a state-of-the-art tennis center was met,” Chadwick said. “The expansion will be a compliment to the existing space and advance our facilities even further.” The outstanding tennis facilities echo the success of the tennis programs and helps them continue their quest for championships. It shows the commitment and dedication the University has made toward these sports. “We are fortunate to have the support of our athletic department,” Chadwick said. “This total team effort is what has placed our tennis programs at the top of the collegiate world.”

INDOOR COURTS AMONG NATION’S ATTENDANCE LEADERS Ole Miss finished the 2010 season third in the annual ITA Attendance Race standings for regular season home matches. The Rebels drew 4,293 fans to its matches at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center and Gillom Sports Center. Closing out the season with four straight home matches, the Rebels had a strong finish, as 1,836 fans flocked to the tennis center in April to lead the nation. Ole Miss had more than 900 for its match against arch-rival Mississippi State.
