BILLY CHADWICK

HEAD COACH | 30th YEAR | BELHAVEN COLLEGE | 1974 2009 USPTA National College Coach of the Year Three-time SEC Coach of the Year Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame Billy Chadwick, who begins his 30th year with the Rebel men’s tennis program, ranks as one of the top collegiate head coaches and is recognized as one of the most successful head coaches in the history of Ole Miss sports. Chadwick was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in July of 2006 for his contributions to the world of tennis as both a player and a coach. In January of 2011, Chadwick was inducted into the Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame. With his fifth SEC Championship in 2009, Chadwick now trails only legendary Ole Miss football coach John Vaught in SEC titles won. Vaught won six conference titles in 1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962 and 1963. A Mississippi native, Chadwick is one of only 10 active Division I men’s tennis coaches to have led a team to the NCAA Championship Finals. Furthermore, he is one of only five active Division I coaches to have taken his team to three or more NCAA Final Fours. In his tenure at Ole Miss, he has led the Rebels to the NCAA Championships 20 times, and the Rebels have become a mainstay among the elite teams in the national rankings. Chadwick began his coaching career at Ole Miss as the women’s tennis coach, laying the foundation for the excellent team they have today. In 1982, he led the Lady Rebels to the SEC finals, AIAW Nationals and the 4 | @OLEMISSNOW | @OLEMISSMTENNIS

In 29 years at the helm, the program has grown to unprecedented heights, winning SEC and NCAA Championships. In 2012, the Rebels earned the program’s 19th straight NCAA appearance, advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the 16th time and finished the year ranked No. 14 in the nation. Marcel Thiemann reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals for the second year in a row and earned All-America honors. Tucker Vorster joined Thiemann on the All-SEC team again. Chadwick did perhaps his finest coaching job in 2010 as the Rebels lost four starters from the 2009 SEC Champion squad, including NCAA Champion Devin Britton. Furthermore, senior Kalle Norberg was lost for the year with an injury. The Rebels captured their ninth consecutive SEC West Championship, advanced to the semifinals of the

Britton defeated three seeded players en route to his national title.

CHAMPION ON TOUR

MAHESH BHUPATHI 11-Time Grand Slam Champion Mahesh Bhupathi, a former NCAA Doubles Champion at Ole Miss, has confirmed his place in tennis history. Bhupathi began a two-year stint on the ATP Player Council in 2012. He also teamed with countryman Rohan Bopanna to compile a 34-22 match record. They closed the season strongly by reaching 3 finals in 4 tournaments includnig the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, his 5th year-end championship final showing In 2011, Bhupathi teamed back up with countryman Leander Paes. The two made a successful return to the courts, winning their home country title in Chennai and falling just short of the one grand slam doubles title that eludes the pair, the Australiian Open. On their way to the finals, Bhupathi won his 600th career match since turning pro in 1995. Only 16 other players in the Open Era have reached the milestone. In 2009, Bhupathi paired with fellow Indian Sania Mirza to capture the Mixed Doubles Championship at the Australian Open for his 11th grand slam title. He and fellow doubles partner, Mark Knowles, ended the year ranked No. 3 in the ATP Rankings. The duo teamed up to reach the finals at the Australian and U.S. Opens and won the title at Barcelona, after winning four titles in their first year together in 2008. Bhupathi finished in the Top 30 individually in the Stanford ATP Doubles Rankings in 2007 for the seventh consecutive year and 11th overall as well as earning his 40th career doubles title. Bhupathi teamed with Martina Hingis in 2006 to capture the Australian Open Mixed Doubles title, bringing his total to 10 career grand slams. In 2005, he teamed with Mary Pierce to claim the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon and then won his fifth mixed doubles title when he and Daniela Hantuchova captured the U.S. Open Championships. In 2004, Bhupathi finished the season ranked in the Top 10 (No. 5 in the ATP Doubles Race with Russia’s Max Mirnyi and No. 7 individually) for the fourth consecutive year and sixth time in seven years. In addition, he won five doubles titles and more than 50 matches for the third year in a row. His five titles came with four different partners. Bhupathi earned a spot in the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston (with Mirnyi). Bhupathi also teamed with Mirnyi to reach the quarterfinals at the 2004 Australian Open and the semifinals at the French Open. He also teamed up with former partner and fellow countryman, Leander Paes, to win the Master Series Toronto and reach the semifinals at the Olympics in Athens, Greece. Bhupathi teamed with Mirnyi in 2003 to win five of an ATP-high nine finals and finished No. 2 in the ATP Team Race standings. The two reached the finals at Wimbledon. In 2002, Bhupathi added two more grand slam titles to his impressive resume. He teamed with Russia’s Elena Likhovtseva to win the Mixed Doubles title at Wimbledon and two months later, he and doubles partner Max Mirnyi won the U.S. Open Championship. In 1999, Bhupathi and his partner, Leander Paes, became the first doubles duo in the modern era to reach the finals of all four grand slam events in a calendar year. The pair won the French Open Championships and one month later captured the most prestigious of the grand slams, Wimbledon. In addition to winning two doubles grand slam titles in 1999, Bhupathi also captured the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Championship.

After not playing together much in 2000 due to injuries, Bhupathi and Paes returned to the courts together in 2001 and captured their third grand slam title and second French Open Championship. In 15 years on the tour, Bhupathi has won more than six million dollars in prize money and captured 51 doubles titles. Bhupathi became the first player in the history of India to win an ATP Grand Slam title when he won the Mixed Doubles title at the French Open Championships in the summer of 1997. While at Ole Miss, Bhupathi led the Rebels to the NCAA team finals. He became the first Rebel tennis player to win an NCAA title when he teamed with Ali Hamadeh to capture the Doubles Championship in 1995 and ended the year as the No. 1 doubles team in the nation. In addition, Bhupathi was an All-American, 1995 SEC Singles Champion and SEC Player of the Year. Bhupathi credits his success to his college days at Ole Miss. “Although I had good results in junior tennis, I was not ready for the pros physically and mentally,” Bhupathi said. “I credit coach Chadwick for much of my success. I really enjoyed my time at Ole Miss and I still stay in touch with my former teammates.” In 2010, Bhupathi became the first Ole Miss player to be inducted into the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame.

DR. DANIEL W. JONES | CHANCELLOR From an early age, Dr. Daniel W. Jones knew his career aspirations revolved around medicine and leadership. And while a physician leading a comprehensive university isn’t a common arrangement, Jones’ appointment as the 16th chancellor of the University of Mississippi is no surprise to anyone familiar with his record of leadership and achievements at the UM Medical Center in Jackson and the American Heart Association. Jones became chancellor on July 1, 2009, and oversees the campuses in Oxford, Jackson, Southaven, Tupelo and Grenada. Vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine since 2003, Jones served as the Medical Center’s chief executive officer, overseeing five schools and the health system. Under his leadership, UMMC restructured its clinical enterprise to create a more agile, market-responsive organization focused on quality, efficiency and clinical leadership. The work resulted in a turnaround in financial performance and selection as one

of the Thomson Top 100 Hospitals in America. Jones’ leadership team also expanded the Medical Center’s commitment to minority scholarships, rural medicine and the elimination of health disparities. Enrollment of underrepresented medical students increased 80 percent in five years. They also led a campaign that raised $53 million, expanded the medical school’s class size from 100 students to 120 students per class and reorganized the medical faculty clinical practice plan from 17 individual practice groups to a single, unified one, facilitating more efficient management and improved patient care. Under his watch, the Medical Center’s research enterprise has been reinvigorated with completion of the Arthur C. Guyton Research Center, acquisition of funding for a research park and increased research funding. A native Mississippian, Jones graduated from Mississippi College in 1971, earned his M.D. in 1975 at UMMC and completed his residency in internal medicine there in 1978. He had a private practice in Laurel, then went to Korea as a medical missionary in 1985. He returned to the UM Medical Center as a faculty member in 1992 and was named the school’s Herbert G.

Langford Professor of Medicine in 1998. He directed the hypertension division and led many clinical studies funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of health. He played a crucial role in the acquisition of funding from NHLBI to create the Jackson Heart Study and was its first principal investigator. As the only large scale study of cardiovascular risk factors in African-Americans, Jones had to overcome the understandable reluctance of African Americans to participate in research and to build consensus among the three participating institutions - Jackson State University, Tougaloo College and UMMC. Neither had ever collaborated in such a massive undertaking. The chancellor began volunteering for the American Heart Association 20 years ago and became its national president in 2007-2008. He was one of the early voices in AHA leadership to call attention to the growing problem of childhood obesity and heart disease in women. He was AHA’s national spokesperson on high blood pressure. Jones is married to Lydia Channell Jones, also a Mississippi College graduate. They have two children, Jennifer Jones Flechas of Oxford and Jason Jones of Clinton.

ROSS BJORK | ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Ross Bjork was announced on March 21, 2012 as the seventh full-time Director of Athletics at Ole Miss. Bjork, 40, arrived in Oxford as the youngest AD among BCS schools and comes off a successful stint in that post at Western Kentucky University. Bjork has set the tone early in his Ole Miss tenure, hiring one of the country’s top rising coaches in his sport in Brian O’Neal (track and field) in just his second month on the job. He also appointed three executive level administrators for external relations, academic support and facilities/game operations. The external relations post was a new umbrella position at the center of Bjork’s reorganization of that area of Ole Miss Athletics, including the UMAA Foundation, ticket operations, marketing and communications and the relationship with Ole Miss Sports Properties. He also created the unit for Health and Sports Performance, which combined sports medicine, strength and conditioning, nutrition and counseling services and added a local orthopedic sports medicine component that will provide primary sports medicine care for all student-athletes. Bjork’s vision in facilities has resulted in a development plan for the Indoor Practice Facility. New projects have begun and include a full service dining facility, football team meeting room, player lounge and visuals throughout the complex. Bjork’s first full week at the post was spent on the Rebel Road Trip, a six-day, 16-stop tour of the region that served to unite the Rebel fanbase. He carried that momentum into the launch of a major sales campaign for football season tickets, which included television and radio advertising, billboards, internet marketing and a new outbound telemarketing call center. Exciting things are happening around Ole Miss Athletics including first-year head football coach Hugh Freeze guiding the Rebels to a bowl game for the first time in three years and the Rebels reclaiming the Egg Bowl trophy.

At WKU, Bjork spent significant time with all head coaches to evaluate and understand the necessary ingredients it takes for each sport to reach their maximum potential athletically and academically. He oversaw an extensive search process that resulted in Matt Myers being named WKU’s new head baseball coach in July of 2011, and groundbreaking is anticipated in the summer of 2012 for major facility upgrades for WKU’s tennis and track and field programs. After Bjork made a midseason coaching change, the Hilltopper men’s basketball team went on to capture the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Women’s Volleyball won the conference regular season and tournament in 2011 and reached the NCAA tournament each of the last two years, while men’s and women’s cross country each won conference team titles in 2011. Women’s swimmer Claire Donahue finished second in the nation in the 100 yard butterfly, the highest finish in the program’s history, and then won a pair of gold medals at the 2011 Pan American Games to become the only WKU athlete to ever claim Pan Am gold. WKU’s football program posted the greatest one-season improvement in conference wins in the history of the Sun Belt in posting a 7-1 league mark and second-place conference finish. WKU football also signed the conference’s top recruiting class each of the last two seasons. WKU’s soccer program also reached the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game in 2011 before falling in overtime in their bid to achieve the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament berth. Operating at full speed immediately after being hired at WKU, Bjork immediately created full time coaching positions for both men’s and women’s golf, implemented a strategic budgeting process, started a master facility plan, restructured several key administrative units and created a new mission statement and core values to guide the athletics program. He also led the “Toppers on Tour” caravan each summer, in which coaches and administrators from the WKU athletic department visit six cities outside of the Bowling Green area in a 19-day span covering over 1,000 total miles. His team also launched

the Power of One membership campaign to accelerate growth for the Hilltopper Athletic Foundation and a new telemarketing program for ticket sales also saw immediate success in new customers for WKU Athletics. Bjork placed a high priority on academic success at WKU and led the creation of a comprehensive academic retention plan for the athletics department, which is geared to proactively impact all incoming student-athletes. Each of WKU’s men’s and women’s athletic teams exceeded the NCAA required 925 Academic Progress Report Rate (APR), and WKU had more individuals honored for their academic achievements by the Sun Belt Conference than any other institution in 2011-12. For the first time in program history, the overall cumulative average GPA was over 3.0 for all 391 student-athletes and 228 maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Ten of the university’s 15 athletic programs posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better. The youngest athletics director of the 120 NCAA FBS programs when hired at WKU, Bjork has an extensive career in intercollegiate athletics with two decades of experience as an administrator and student-athlete, having worked on the senior staffs at UCLA, the University of Miami and the University of Missouri. He began his administrative career at WKU as an Assistant Development Coordinator in 1996-97. Bjork has also served as Campus Recreation Graduate Assistant and Athletic Department Volunteer at Western Illinois University, Marketing Intern for the University of Tulsa, Front Office Intern for the Albuquerque Dukes, and Student Volunteer for Athletics at Emporia State University. Bjork is a native of Dodge City, Kan., and received his bachelor’s degree in recreation administration from Emporia State University in 1995 where he was a twoyear starter at fullback. He earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Western Illinois University in December 1996. Bjork is respected nationally by his peers and is Past-President of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD). He and his wife, Sonya, have two boys: Payton (6) and Paxton (2).

PALMER/SALLOUM TENNIS CENTER

HOME OF THE 2013 SEC MEN’S TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The University of Mississippi’s Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center ranks as one of the nation’s finest collegiate facilities. The tennis center was completed in 1990 and has served as host to the SEC Championships, Women’s ITA South Regional Championships, the USTA National Interscholastic Championships and NCAA Men’s and Women’s Regionals. This year, it will host the SEC Men’s Tennis Tournament. Located in the heart of campus, the tennis center is surrounded by towering magnolia trees and is regarded as perhaps the most beautiful in the country. The tennis center received a major upgrade in 2012 adding to an already stunning facility. The $3 million expansion including additional seating renovations to the coaches/player areas; including the locker rooms, study area, and coaches’ offices. Each team now has their own team lounge to study and hang out complete with locker rooms and flat screen tvs. The complex combines the Greek revival architecture that is predominant on the Oxford campus, housing a 500-seat stadium with courtside pavilions providing additional seating for 300. With the expansion, spectator viewing is now available on top of the buildings to the left and right, allowing for more fans to enjoy what has become an exciting atmosphere. The facility has nine championship courts all with lighting, as well as a computerized scoreboard and message center. Both head men’s and women’s tennis coaches Bily Chadwick and Mark Beyers are excited about the additions to the tennis facility. “When Palmer/Salloum was built, the objective of creating a state-of-the-art tennis center was met,” Chadwick said. “The expansion compliments the existing space and advances our fa-

cilities even further.” “We are thrilled with the additions to the tennis center,” Beyers said. “It will enable us to continue attracting the top players in the nation and around the world as we strive to compete for more championships.” The primary benefactor of the tennis center is John N. Palmer, a 1956 alumnus of Ole Miss, who is currently the U.S. Ambassador to Portugal. He was joined in this effort by Mitchell Salloum Jr., a businessman from Gulfport, who is a 1955 alumnus of the University. The center honors the late Mitchell Salloum, Sr., a 1926 law graduate and a 1960-61 President of the Ole Miss Alumni Association. Additional funds were provided by donations to the Drive for Athletics at Ole Miss. Donors who made significant gifts toward other parts of the stadium include Louis Brandt, Jack Dunbar and William Galtney. Galtney contributed $1 million to the renovation/expansion, and in recognition of his generous donation, the courts were named the William F. Galtney, Jr., Tennis Courts. The Ole Miss tennis programs also benefit from the Gillom Sports Center, which opened in 1997. The facility contains three indoor tennis courts, allowing both tennis teams to play all their matches in Oxford. The outstanding tennis facilities echo the success of the tennis programs and helps them continue their quest for championships. It shows the commitment and dedication the University has made toward these sports. “We are fortunate to have the support of our athletic department,” Chadwick said. “This total team effort is what has placed our tennis programs at the top of the collegiate world.”
