THE WAY OUT

COLLECTION AW2017 FINAL BA PROJECT DESIGN BY OLGA MANGUROVA



//CONCEPT APATHY IS A MAIN PROBLEM WITHIN MILLENNIALS (AND NOT ONLY!) AND EXPERIENCING IT LEADS TO INSENSIBILITY AND ‘I DON’T CARE’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS EVERYTHING. THIS LEADS TO UNHAPPINESS AND COULD CAUSE MORE SERIOUS ISSUES. SO FIND THE WAY OUT OF THAT TRAP! THE COLLECTION IS BUILT UNDER THE IDEA OF ‘FINDING THE WAY OUT’ AS A TRANSFORMATION FROM DARK TO LIGHT, FROM HEAVIER FABRICS TO LIGHTER FABRICS AND FROM WRAPPED SHAPES TO OPEN GARMENTS WITH NO CLOSURE. SINCE APATHY IS AN ABSTRACT TERM, I FOUND MY WAY TO EXPRESS IT AND THE IDEA THAT THERE IS SOMETHING MORE HIDDEN UNDER THE GREY SURFACE OF APATHY THROUGH COLORS, TEXTILE MANIPULATIONS AND SHAPES. IT IS A STREET STYLE WOMENSWEAR COLLECTION, INVOLVING MOSTLY COLD AND NEUTRAL COLOURS THAT CREATE A NOSTALIC MOOD BUT AT THE SAME TIME THE STYLE BRINGS COMFORT TO THE WEARER.

//FABRIC MANIPULATIONS DETAILS OF THIS OUTFIT WERE MADE USING WATER SOLUBLE PAPER. IT HAS BEEN USED IN DIFFERENT WAYS:

/TO CREATE THE PATCHES ON THE JACKET IN THE FORM OF ILLUSTRATED FACIAL PARTS /TO CREATE THE MESH HEM OF THE SLEEVES OF THE JACKET

/ON THE TOP: AS A MESH LAYER COVERING THE SILK CHIFFON PATCHES

/AS A MESH SUPPORT TO THE VERY DAMAGED DENIM PART AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LEGS

//THREAD MANIPULATIONS AN INNOVATIVE WAY OF USING THREAD WAS INVOLVED TO CREATE EMBROIDERY-LIKE DRAWINGS ON THE GARMNETS OF THIS OUTFIT

/THE FACES ON THE COAT EXPRESS THE JOY OF OVERCOMING THE APATHY, AS THIS IS ONE OF THE LAST OUTFITS OF THE LINE UP - THEY ARE COLORFUL, SHOWING DIFFERENT EMOTIONS AND ARE EXPOSED

/THE FACES ON THE SHIRT ARE HIDDEN UNDER THE SKIRT - THEY ARE BLACK AND EMOTIONLESS - SYMBOLIZING THE APATHY WHICH IS ALREADY DEFEATED AND FORGOTTEN UNDER THE LAYERS OF FABRIC.

//CONCEPT I BASED MY AP FINAL THESIS COLLECTION ON A LEGEND ABOUT A CAPE CALLED KALIAKRA NEAR MY HOME TOWN IN BULGARIA. BY INVOLVING THE METHOD OF STORYTELLING, I MANAGED TO RECREATE THE TALE THROUGH DIFFERENT FABRIC MANIPULATIONS AND DETAILS INCORPORATED IN THE GARMENTS. THE MAIN ELEMENTS WERE THE SAILOR’S KNOTS AND THE FABRIC TECHNIQUE SMOCKING. THE COLLECTION IS DEVELOPED UNDER THE DESIGN IDENTITY OF SWEDISH DESIGNER HELENA HORSTEDT.

//COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: SHAPES AND SKETCHES IN ORDER TO DEVELOP CONTEMPORARY AND MODERN DESIGNS IN THE STYLE OF DKNY, I COPIED THE SHAPES OF CHOSEN ARCHITECTURAL OBJECTS AND PLAYED WITH THE SHAPES, PLACING THEM OVER A BODY FIGURE. THAT GAVE ME MANY IDEAS WHICH I DEVELOPED IN SKETCHES.








//INTERNSHIP AT SOULMATE A/S MY INTERNSHIP AT SOULMATE A/S WAS FOCUSING MAINLY AROUND PRINT MAKING AND TREND RESEARCH. MY OTHER TASKS WERE RELATED TO SUGGESTING NEW LOOKS FOR THE LABELS AND THE PRICE TAGS; CREATING PROMOTION MATERIALS, SUCH AS BANNERS AND BROCHURES; MOOD BOARDS AND COLOR CARD ASSISTANCE.

//PRINT DEVELOPMENT THE TARGET GROUP OF SOULMATE A/S ARE WOMEN BETWEEN 35-50 YEARS OLD AND THE STYLE IS RELAXED, COMFORTABLE AND FRESH. ‘NATURE’ IS A KEY WORD IN THE BRAND IDENTITY OF SOULMATE, SO MOST OF THE PRINTS ARE NATURE-INSPIRED AND WITH NATURAL AND NEURTAL COLORS.


//PRODUCED DESIGNS SOME OF THE DESIGNS I MADE WENT TO PRODUCTION. HERE ARE TWO EXAMPLES.

MY TASK REGARDING THE LABELS WAS TO MAKE THEM A BIT MORE PLAYFUL, WITH A PATTERN, CONSISTENT WITH THE BRAND IDENTITY.

THE PRICE TAGS OF SOULMATE ARE SIMPLY A BLACK RECTANGLE WITH THE COMPANY LOGO, SO I SUGGESTED A DESIGN THAT WOULD BE MORE CONSISTENT WITH THE BRAND IDENTITY AND STILL KEEP THE OLD MINIMALIST LOOK.



//TECHNICAL DRAWING BY HAND A CRUCIAL SKILL FOR A FASHION DESIGNER IS HAVING A GREAT SENSE FOR PROPORTION. DURING MY EXCHANGE SEMESTER IN IED MILAN I HAD A SUBJECT WHERE WE WERE TAUGHT TO MAKE TECHNICAL SKETCHES WITHOUT THE USE OF A COMPUTER PROGRAM, BUT BY HAND. THAT PROVIDED ME WITH VERY VALUABLE SKILLS SUCH AS THE MENTIONED SENSE FOR PROPORTION, EYE FOR THE DETAILS, KNOWLEDGE IN HOW TO ILLUSTRATE DIFFERENT DETAILS TECHNICALLY, ETC.
