multifunctional COMMUNITY CENTER IN KYIV THE IDEA of the project arose from the unique potential of the territory. It is post industrial area called Telychka.
THE TASK for us is to shift that negative image to the positive one using all the hidden potential of it’s location.
Telychka is a 200ha unique neglected area, which bordering with the historical area of Kyiv. The location makes the territory precious. Thus it has a great potential for the further development: not far from the city centre, the biggest botanical garden and main transport hubs. But moreover, it is situated right on the banks of the river Dniper, which gives it a possibility for development of embankment, as there is almost no such a place in Kyiv, where the river is not cut from the urban fabric with transport infrastructure.
The project WILL HELP to connect the existing historical landscape of so-called Edge (p.11) with the river Dniper through the Telychka territory.
However, due to the historical reasons and industrial past, the image of Telychka is mostly negative for Kyiv citizens. Some doesn’t know about it’s existing, thought crossing the area every day through the bridge from the Left bank. Currently, Telychka houses around 50 small manufactures and a few big factories; loads of private warehouses and big empty spaces.
The multifunctional community center is a rare typology for Ukraine, as mostly there are some institutions for children or young, but not for adults. Currently, the territory doesn’t house a lot of inhabitants, but due to the municipality plans it may be transformed into a housing district. However, Telychka yearly hosts a few big cultural events.
The project IS GOING TO SOLVE a few of Kyiv urban problems, as low usage of post industrial areas, spatial isolation of the plot from the fabric of the city with transport infrastructure (the same pattern for almost all industrial sites in Kyiv), lack of all types of public and social infrastructure in the area, lack of water protecting areas etc.
THE AIM is to bring the audience of all ages to that area by providing a various of parallel functions. The community center consists of the main block of the center and the Bridge, which connects Telychka with the botanical garden. It is raised to the level of +22.100, which is the bottom level of the botanical garden hills. The Bridge crosses the building and is used not only as transfer, but as a public space with transformative exhibition space inside the building as well. CULTURE AND EDUCATION are the main functions, however there are also a place for commercial use. The center has all the range of daylong activities, thus you can come to work here, bring the child for daycare, have a lunch and stay for additional classes together. The building has 2 entrances: the main is from the Bridge (on +22.100), as the continuation of the Edge path, the other is from the square in front of the building on 0.000. From 0.000 the visitor passes by the reception and the bookstore to stairs and elevators.
The FIRST FLOOR (+22.100) contains more open and public functions: restaurant, cooking class with tasting cafe, multifunctional studio for chamber literature meetings and exhibitions, art class, dance class, library (mediatheque and storage) and the hall as a transit and a multifunctional core. The main interior volumes are the bridge and the concert hall, which is raised above the passage for 6m. All the functions are interactive and open for all ages non-professional groups. The SECOND FLOOR (+28.100) contains the educational block with children daycare & educational class, library’s reading room, classes for adults and a lecture hall. From the second floor you also could get to the concert hall with transformed theatre. The THIRD FLOOR (+34.100) contains offices for cultural, non-profit, IT organizations and cluster for independent workers. The 2nd and the 3rd floors also contain the open terrace cells, which are used as a recreation area, open public spaces for meetings, lectures, public activities etc. and may be transformed into closed areas if needed.

MAIN HALL INTERIOR
THE BRIDGE connects the main points of historical landscape of Kyiv center with the river Dniper throught the proposed entrance to the Botanical Garden. The Bridge runs above the loaded highways close to the Vydubychi transport hub. It is raised to the level of +22.100, which is the bottom level of the botanical garden hills. The Bridge contains a park, pedestian&bike infrastructure, 2 small anphitheatres for the open performances. It is around 330m long and is for pedestrian and bike usage.
