1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? Within this module I tried to focus a lot more on my typography and making sure it was structured and the higherarchy was evident throughout, the Brief 1 + 2 in particular helped me develop these skills as they were both heavily type based. Both briefs had publication designs within them and needed to deliver information in a direct form. I also focused on concept development in this module in order to create designs that were appropriate and not just there for unnecessary aesthetic, I took a lot away from my placement at the Beautiful Meme, they constantly made me question my decisions made which in turn I brought to every brief throughout this module. I also wanted to focus on print making and print process as it is something I feel is completely necessary within branding, Brief 3 allowed me to do this by being a heavily print related brief, both me and Frankie spent a lot of time in the screen print room exploring different processes and how they relate to specific subject matters. Publication and layout skills have also been developed much more as I had a few briefs requiring publication design, this gave me the opportunity to develop type and publication design at the same time which helped a lot. 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? I have tried various methods of design during this module due to having a wide range of briefs and one heavily print based. Brand development is something I have improved on by ensuring I understood exactly what my client expected of me and needed in order to create a suitable brand identity which appeals to a specific audience, on the other end of the spectrum I had to create brand identity for a much larger event which targets a very wide audience. Going between the two throughout this module helped me develop my branding skills a lot.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? My idea generation has improved a lot during this module, constantly asking my self why I始m making the decisions has made me look at my work from a different perspective and in turn see flaws I wouldn始t usually see. I also tried to develop as many different ideas before I settled for one, as to get the best out of the brief I could, this came from constantly questioning my work and looking at it from an outsiders perspective. In the past I often get one idea and go with it, This has allowed me to create much more informed designs and expand on these. I feel that brief 2 reflects this the most and shows how I have develop the brand and the aesthetic since the beginning. Another skill developed during this module is research, I feel by researching more I was able to create designs that worked in the
correct context and applied to the audience necessary. My print skills have improved a lot in this module due to spending so much time in the screen print room ensuring all the prints were of high quality I also explored a wide range of processes in order to see which fitted best. 4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? My main weakness would have to be time management. Unfortunately I have let myself down again, although I have been better than previous modules, Iʼve still found myself running out of time and wanting to do much more to briefs at the last minute. I will make sure this doesnʼt happen again by revisiting a timeline on a week-by-week basis to ensure everything runs accordingly.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1 - Keep a week-by-week timeline on my person at all times. 2 - Keep a notepad for ideas on my person at all times. 3 - Consider print finishes from the very beginning of projects 4 - Create my own crits with peers. 5 – Source all materials needed for projects immediately.
6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an ʻxʼ) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1
