Longest Lunch

President’s Message Well hasn't September been a busy month with many of us working at Fine Food in Sydney, Lunch show and maybe doing the Royal Melbourne Show. And some of our members are also heading to Tasmania for another show there. Whew!! With the sun shining now, Spring is in the air, the fillies and mares are racing around the bend to head home to the Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington Racecourse. This is a big event in our industry so good luck to all those in front and behind the scenes. Let’s all back a winner! Last week in Melbourne was also a BIG week, with the Footy finals, the Brownlow Awards night and many other events leading up to that one day in September when the world stops . . . to watch the Grand Final. My first team Box Hill Hawks got home with a win . . .and I am so happy that the mighty Hawks won the GRAND FINAL.

Congratulations to Hawthorn. Now to next year... Go HAWKS!! One night that I am really looking forward to is our very own Awards night. It is always great to catch up with industry friends, legends and guests that attend. This is certainly a highlight for our calendar so as President of FIA, I invite you all to please come and join us for a special night to celebrate a big year in the foodservice industry. Make sure you take up the special member offer and book early for a big saving!

Daylight Savings is just around the corner, so adjust your clocks on Sunday 6 October by moving the clock forward an hour. Remember that we will have multiple time zones as Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia do not observe daylight saving. See you all at the Foodservice Industry Australia Awards of Excellence 2013 on Friday 15 November. Bill

Did YOU launch a NEW food product in the last financial year? If so, we encourage you to enter this into the awards; Do you know someone who has excelled in their job, please nominate them. We ask that you vote when requested, nominate and get involved as these are YOUR awards and the FIA wants to reward excellence.

are also looking at the best methods for harvesting from the sea.

Linking back to producers and those that look after fresh food and seafood, our speakers Martin Boetz from Cooks Co-Op and John Susman from Fishtales, both engaged the audience with their key messages and discussion around the future of food.

Martin has recently departed Longrain and commenced work on his sustainable farm just north of Sydney in the Hawksbury region. Land that is lush and fertile, Martin has found his niche with connections to other farmers in the region so that he can supply the freshest produce grown for Chef friends in Sydney. By combining resources, farmers nearby deliver to him their best from the land and this goes in one delivery to the end user.

John also questioned how we manage the sea and maintained a sustainable environment. Local seafood is gaining popularity on restaurant menus and producers

Look out for the new restaurant venture from Martin next time you are in Sydney, due to open in Rushcutters Bay.

Stoddart Opening On a hot Queensland day, a very large crowd descended on a remote site located in Karawatha near Logan in the hinterland, to see the brand new Stoddart Manufacturing facility, which is the size of the MCG. With new technology and an eye for detail, the Stoddart site is full of everything from fridge doors to garden shed, ovens and fabrication units and the high quality catering equipment it is known for throughout Australia. In the presence of government and industry leaders, the family were keen to share this milestone moment with those most important to them, their family, their workers and of course their distributors and customers. In his opening address, Bill Stoddart, said “We are very proud to present our new facility to you today, for it symbolizes a landmark in the history of Stoddart Manufacturing. We are a 54 year old family-owned Australian manufacturing company. And one might ask with skepticism; does manufacturing have a future in this country? Well this site is our answer to that. We believe firmly that YES it does.” “ Sustainable manufacturing anywhere needs continuous improvement in productivity and innovation. We need to think smart, think opportunity and think futuristically. We need to be prepared to reinvent ourselves to meet the needs of an ever-changing market.” This company has a very long history in Australia, since it was started in 1959 by Tom Stoddart. “He brought experience with him in the manufacture of hot water systems and stainless steel sheet metal products. When his brother Albert joined the

business to assist with financial management he often uttered the idiom “if you make a 3 legged stool it will fall over.” All markets don’t fail simultaneously; they fluctuate. And so we have consistently seized opportunities when they’ve come along to do other things. An example of this occurred in the late 1980s. At that time we were predominantly commercial kitchen contractors. We started to become aware of the need for street furniture. Street furniture was a new leg on the stool. Most of our products are an example of some considerable degree of diversification; a niche that has required intellectual ingenuity, clever design and impeccable quality. We still manufacture street furniture today along with other diverse products; all of which have evolved out of our culture of reinvention.” The site at Karawatha is not just huge, it is diverse and shows off lean manufacturing processes at its best, which eliminates any wasted movements. They have combined their other sites so that everything is now under the one roof, a remarkable achievement given the size of the equipment used in manufacturing. This site can operate 24 hours a day and over many years of planning, led Stoddart Manufacturing to consider a greenfield site so that we could create a state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution facility with an integrated office environment; one which could not only catered for our very specific needs but reflected world's best practice in manufacturing processes. CONGRATULATIONS Stoddart Manufacturing.
