Welcome to Oliver BC, Canada’s Wine Capital – Come for the wine but stay for the experience! On behalf of our residents, we extend you a warm welcome and invite you to come and experience all that Oliver has to offer. Oliver is a quaint community dedicated to the preservation of our bountiful agriculture. Along with 36 percent of British Columbia’s vineyard acreage, our 400 plus farms also produce world class fruits and vegetables. Agriculture is our primary industry supporting our approximately 9,000 residents, including rural Oliver. With this appreciation of the land, comes the love of our surrounding environment. Oliver is a nature lover’s paradise with great hiking trails, bird-watching sanctuaries and fantastic fishing spots. Incredible golf in the heart of Canada’s wine country! Bring your clubs and enjoy a round on local championship golf courses that boast stunning views and natural surroundings; there’s not a better place to come and play golf for a couple of days. Some local history of the area has been very well documented, recorded and preserved and may be found in the archives, the museum, and at sites around the South Okanagan. Some is limited to impressions left in the ground, and to tales of ghost towns, but all is to be re-discovered by ever increasing groups of visitors from across Canada and around the world. We are also home to many festivals and sport tourism events including the Pig Out, Half Corked Marathon, Art Walk, Half-Iron & Aqua Bike and our Festival of the Grape. Whether your interests include wine tasting, miles of hiking, bird watching, vibrant arts, history, heritage and culture we guarantee you may be surprised and not disappointed. Wine lovers, adventure seekers, cultural explorers, authentic experiencers, free spirits and rejuvenators are definitely welcome. Come for the wine but stay for the experience!’

Welcome. The Osoyoos Indian Band is a member of the Okanagan Nation, which speaks the nqilxwc n/nsyilxc n language. Our ancestors have lived, gathered, occupied, traded, built sustainable economies and responsibly managed our territory, including the Oliver and Osoyoos area, since the beginning of people on this land. You could say that a lot of people in Oliver are in the FOG, but that’s a good thing. Here, FOG means only one thing – Festival of the Grape, which is Oliver’s signature event known all over North America. The festival, held at the end of September, attracts more than 4,500 people who come to taste award-winning wines and cheer on their favourite team in the fun-filled grape stomp competition. Just don’t get too close to the stage unless you want grape juice all over you! FOG also features live music, a variety of food trucks, an artisan market, a judged art show and sale, and an interactive “Kids Zone.” There are games, crafts, sack races and even a grape stomp for youth. The festival begins with a parade ceremony led by Bacchus to officially open the event. The wine never stops flowing until the end. You never know who will show up to FOG. Last year surprise celebrity Rick Mercer did a report on the festival and competed in the grape stomp, at one point putting his mouth over the spout to drink the juice instead of filling the jar. That’s Rick for you. Anyway, be sure to check out this year’s FOG in Oliver Community Park, and if you have a team, you’ve got to stomp those grapes.

Half-corked Marathon a real blast in Oliver
Securing a spot in the Half-Corked Marathon is like winning the lottery. Wait a minute . . . it is a lottery. That’s right. This event is so popular that organizers have to hold a lottery every year for participants. What makes Half-Corked so unique is the fact people dress up in outlandish costumes and run through vineyards while sampling some of Canada’s finest wines and cuisine. This year’s race weekend is May 24-26, with a “party at the finish line” in Oliver Community Park on May 25. Spectators are invited to cheer on their favourite runners, some of whom will win prizes for their costumes. General admission at the finish line is free.

Kabaddi Tournament unique sporting event
The Okanagan Punjabi Cultural Society hosts the annual Kabaddi tournament in Oliver Community Park every fall (September). This unique contact sport combines several disciplines, including strength, speed, agility and conditioning. Kabaddi is played between two teams of seven players. The objective of the game is for a single player on offence to run into the opposing team’s half and tag out as many of their defenders as possible, and return to their own half without being tackled. If watching all that action makes you hungry, check out the Indo-Canadian food on the premises.

THE
Oliver Roots and Fruits Expo
If you’re in Oliver on Aug. 16-17 there is one thing you don’t want to miss – the third annual Roots and Fruits Expo. The event is a free, fun-for-all-ages celebration of the community’s agriculture and history. The day (Aug. 17) kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with the ever-popular Sunshine Festival parade on Main Street. After that, the Expo begins in Oliver Community Park for a day of musical entertainment and activities, such as a pie eating contest, petting zoo, pop-up water park, wine barrel train rides, gold panning, art exhibits and farmer’s market. One of the most popular events during the Expo is a youth talent show, where local boys and girls get up on stage to perform their song and dance routines. The Expo continues into the evening with musical acts to make you feel like dancing in the park.

OSOYOOS
Branch out and feel the South Okanagan wilderness Here are a few of our favourites. We did our best to order them from easiest to most challenging Vaseux Lake For a nice, easy boardwalk stroll, head 15 kilometres north of town to the Vaseux Lake Wildlife Centre and Bird Observatory. Brief and easy trail networks make it easy to surround yourself in the marshy vegetation and get close to the water. The mini hike has benches for breaks and offers an iconic view of McIntyre Bluff from the north. Osoyoos Desert Centre Just like the Vaseux Lake Bird Observatory, this one has an effortless wooden boardwalk – but a much longer distance of 1.5 kilometres. The walkway allows hikers to be immersed in the South Okanagan’s unique desert ecosystem. You can take a guided tour or go self-guided, and there is an admission
22 IMAGINE OLIVER 2019
to use the facility, which is operated by a nonprofit society. Visit desert.org to find out times, prices and special events. Osoyoos Lake Oxbows A flat trail that exposes hikers to four kilometres of our windy waterway – a crucial part of the local ecosystem. Interpretive signs make it a great place to learn about ecology, but the fourkilometre pathway will stimulate very few endorphins. Peach Cliff in Okanagan Falls To feel like you’ve climbed a mighty mountain before breakfast, this round trip is less than five kilometres. It elevates hikers atop the distinct rockface in the sleepy little town between Penticton and Oliver. It’s about 20 kilometres north of town and the parking lot can be a little tricky to find. Skaha Bluffs Provincial Parks Rock climbers come from around the world try to experience Skaha Bluffs
– because just like the hiking trails – the landscape offers easy access to a multitude of routes, and for all skill levels. With numerous options and directions for trekking, Skaha Bluffs offer hikers a choose-your-own-adventure scenario. Keremeos Columns This one will remind hikers that they’re in a desert. Water is extra important on a trail that requires a steep climb through sagebrush country. But hard work pays off when you get to experience the geological phenomenon of volcanic columns, putting the fine architecture of nature on full display. The trail offers vast views of the Similkameen Valley & River – a landscape surprisingly unique from the Okanagan’s considering how it’s right next door. This trailhead can also be a
little tough to find for a first timer. Mt. Kobau hiking Hikers can take one of two trails – a one-kilometre round trip to a view overlooking Osoyoos, and in the other direction is a three kilometre loop to the Chopaka Lookout which oversees the Keremeos/Cawston Valley. McIntyre Bluff You can’t say you’ve hiked in the Okanagan until you’ve notched McIntyre Bluff off the list. This is one of the most pronounced features of the South – sharing with drivers a beautiful view, inspiring countless pieces of art, and lending inspiration for ancient legends. Parking is at Covert Farms, where anybody curious can peek around the rustically-themed winery before embarking upon a lengthy trek.
Hikers will stroll past rows of vineyard before passing through a wildlife gate to start the trail. It offers a mix of flat and steep terrain and can be tedious at times. Incredible views in every direction. Cathedral Lakes This one’s not for beginners. To feel submerged in the most intense local landscape, take a trip to the the mountainous region near Canada’s southern border. Might be pricey though – anybody without a high clearance vehicle will spend all day hiking an elevation of 1,000 kilometres, unless they want to get shuttled in a jeep to Cathedral Lakes Lodge. From the top it’s a hiker’s paradise, with several rewarding trails, jagged mountain peaks, and vibrant lakes to explore. And the region is rich in wildlife too – keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats.

Come discover why locals have so much love for Baldy Mountain Resort. It’s a small hill where everybody says hi to each other. So spacious that it’s rare to spot a lineup at the lifts, and it’s never hard to find untouched areas on the slopes. Down in the valley, it’s often dreary and overcast during Okanagan’s cooler months, but Baldy rises above the clouds. From up on the mountain, skiers and boarders feel gigantic as they’re exposed to the spectacular views of Okanagan and Boundary Region, often overlooking an ocean of low hanging clouds. And although winters are mild down in Oliver, it’s always a chill climate up at Baldy – which has one of the highest base elevations of any hill in Canada at 1,726 metres above sea level, and the lifts take skiers and boarders nearly another 400 metres above that. Baldy offers great bang for your buck, with lift tickets costing far less than other resorts in the Okanagan. And it’s a perfect place for people who like to avoid big crowds – even in the parking lot, it’s always easy to find a space close to the base of the hill.
Ride with us
Whether it’s just a leisurely day trip or a longer excursion into the back country, we are perfectly located as the base for your road bike adventures. Your options out of Oliver are varied in any direction. The southern route along Highway 97 into Washington, for example, will take you to Omak and perhaps further south to the resort area of Lake Chelan. There is a loop that runs through the highlands back to Highway 97 and along the Columbia River. Take Highway 3 west out of Osoyoos towards Keremeos. Hook up with Highway 3A at Keremeos and pass Yellow Lake and Trout Lake and ride along the Marron Valley until you reach Highway 97. There you have the option of heading north towards Penticton, or south to Okanagan Falls. Another option once you reach Okanagan Falls is to take Green Lake Road south past Green and Mahoney Lakes to Willowbrook Road that will take you through rolling desert lands to Fairview Road and into Oliver. At Penticton, where the road ends, you have the option of driving on the east side of Okanagan Lake past Naramata and onto a dirt road to Chute Lake or turning south where you can ride on either side of Skaha Lake into Okanagan Falls and south to Osoyoos.
These routes are just a hint of what’s available to bikers that come to our part of the world. There are many more routes. Stop off at the Osoyoos Visitor Centre for suggestions on how to explore our distinctive countryside.

Happy Vaisakhi
26  IMAGINE OLIVER 2019
Sikhs across the world have been celebrating Vaisakhi for over 300 years and the Bhav Sagar Tarn Sikh Temple in Oliver started hosting its own community festival and parade in 2018. Usually falling on April 14, the holiday commemorates the birth of the Khalsa tradition, a type of Sikh warrior which dates back to 1699. Vaisakhi is a multi-day event with three days of continuous prayer at the temple. On the middle day, the temple hosts a Nagar Kirtan, a procession featuring traditional Sikh holy hymns. Festivities include a parade down Highway 97, from the temple to the Oliver Community Centre, where celebrations continue with food and live music. While members of the Sikh community travel from the Lower Mainland to attend Oliver’s event, the local temple welcomes the local community to come and enjoy the holiday and partake in celebrations as well.

Oliver not just a sleepy town Some may think of Oliver as a sleepy little town full of retirees, but Canada’s Wine Capital has a rich music scene for those who know where to look. The most prominent venue in the area is the Frank Venables Theatre, which tends to attract talented singer-songwriters, bands with classically-trained musicians, and tribute acts from the baby-boomer golden days. A Bob Seger cover artist played the theatre last month, and later this year will be Bruce Springsteen and Queen tribute acts. Other venues close to downtown Oliver are the Firehall Brewery and Medici’s Gelateria. You might not notice any stages during the daytime, but when there’s a show on, their cozy little spaces are rearranged into makeshift concert halls. And for anybody who still has a record collection, the Firehall Brewery also has a record player for patrons to use anytime, and there’s already a decent selection of donated albums in the house. Sid Ruhland, who manages the Firehall Brewery, said guests at his pub might feel like they’re in a friend’s living room, enjoying their drinks elbow-to-elbow in a room full of familiar faces. David Badger, who used to own Medici’s, says local artists have been getting more involved and growing the culture of music in Oliver. “We are kind of a blues town,” he said. 28 IMAGINE OLIVER 2019
Before selling Medici’s, he organized the Friday Night Live open mic, which attracted talent from as far north as Summerland on a bi-weekly basis. Sometimes seeking entertainment requires a drive to the outskirts of Oliver. Wineries are known to host concerts in warmer weather, like Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, which hosts the Canadian Concert Series every summer. Every August is the Sunshine Festival, which is a massive celebration of local heritage. Before any live music begins, the day starts off with a huge parade down Main Street, and leads to a full day of family fun at the Oliver Community Park. And there’s never an admission fee. North of town is Ye Olde Welcome Inn, and under its new owner, the pub has begun featuring local musicians on select nights. Experiencing the loudest shows in the Okanagan requires driving deep down a forest service road, where no neighbours can be disturbed. These festival grounds are full of glow sticks, lasers and liberation. Giant speakers and full-size stages are set up within the Okanagan wilderness, where dance floors are surrounded by trees and DJs are playing EDM music until the sun comes up – sometimes for days on end. Search “Ora Laser Entertainment” on Facebook to find out when and where these types of concerts take place.

Are you a ‘Freak’n Farmer or what?
If you’re not afraid to get a little dirty . . . correction . . . downright filthy, then the Freak’n Farmer obstacle race in Oliver is for you. Every September, Covert Farms hosts the infamous race that separates the men from the boys (and the women from the girls) by putting them to work the way farm hands do it in Canada’s only desert. The grueling event sees participants rolling big tractor tires, wallowing through mud and climbing walls. And that’s just the start. But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Laugh it up, enjoy the lush fields and breathe that cool mountain air . . . you’re going to need it. Choose from the 5k, 10k or 20 k course. Just don’t wimp out. There is also a children’s course. Not feeling up to it? You can always be a spectator watching all those poor souls get mud in their eye. A shuttle service is available to take you to the mud fields to watch all of the action.
