Welcome to Oliver On behalf of our residents, we extend you a
warm welcome and invite you to come and experience all that Oliver has to offer. Oliver is a quaint community dedicated to the preservation of our agriculture. Along with the 36 percent of B.C.’s vineyard acreage, our 400 plus farms also produce world class fruits and vegetables. Agriculture is our primary industry supporting our approximately 9,000 residents. With this appreciation of the land, comes the love of our surrounding environment. Oliver is a nature-lover’s paradise with great hiking trails, bird-watching sanctuaries and fantastic fishing spots. We are also home to many festivals and events including two world famous events, The Half Corked Marathon and Festival of the Grape. Whether your interests include wine tasting or hiking, Oliver offers the best of the South Okanagan. Come for the wine but stay for the experience!

Summer It’s no mistake that one of our wine trails is called the Golden Mile... it’s bathed in sunlight and a warm glow falls over the vineyards and mountains, creating a perfect backdrop for a summer day, and an Instagram image sure to draw your friends virtually into the Okanagan vista you’ve discovered. Soak up some vitamin D and get some exercise here in triathlon country. Choose from races amateur to pro to running through vineyards drinking wine - held in the Oliver area as a participant, or volunteer and cheer on competitors from around the world. Give your legs a workout with a bike ride; a short one on a trail, or a long one up a mountain, or how about lifting a glass? More than two dozen wineries will help you hydrate during these hot, dry weeks. Take a break on a winery patio with some local charcuterie or a gourmet dinner as the sun sets. Our chefs are artists and love to show off their creations, but you too can cultivate your chef skills with a cooking class, or become a winemaker for a short time at a grape stomp or blending seminar with new-found friends at a winery. Take a break at a museum or art gallery and learn about Oliver’s colourful history. Finish the day with Music in the Park, with your toes embracing the cool grass and your ears enjoying some cool tunes, or grab a partner and dance the night away as the stars come out.

Wine and Dine You are firmly planted in the Wine Capital of Canada, and our wines pair well with just about anything, from a romantic evening campfire to a five-course dinner at your new favourite restaurant. Whether it’s a gourmet meal prepared by a Red Seal chef, a midday break at the local bakery, or a visit to one of our markets for fresh produce and exotic spices, Oliver’s diversity of flavours tempt any palate. Stop at a roadside food truck for
and pair with a bottle from one of the area’s two dozen (and growing) wineries, and it’s bon appetit time.

A vintage for every taste Nestled in the beautiful south Okanagan, Oliver can proudly call itself the Wine Capital of Canada. Vineyards dot the landscape and provide the necessary ingredients to produce some of the finest vintages in the country, and we’re home to more than two dozen of the province’s licensed, internationally recognized wineries. The “Golden Mile” on the west bench is recognized as a distinctive viticultural area that is rich with glacial deposits formed from the ice age. Other wineries located on the “Black Sage” east bench have equally unique growing climates with deep sandy deposits. Winemakers assert that different soil conditions, known as terroir, have an identifiable impact on the flavour of the wines. Whatever your wine style or preferred vintage, we’ve got a sip for you to savour. Pick up a bottle of red, white, pink, bubbles, or a coveted icewine. Wineries of every type and size are willing to open their doors and let wine enthusiasts peruse their operations, and before you leave, sign up for a wine club or two so you’re the first to know when the next release is ready. Step one: plan your visit. Step two: designate a driver or hire a tour company to shuttle you through a selection of wineries. Step three: drink it all in. The views are as a good as the wines.

Autumn Fall in love with the bounty of autumn. The culmination of a hot summer extends into a warm, golden-hued season of harvesting all that Oliver offers, from fruit to wine to spectacular moments in nature. This is our season to show off. Book an extended stay for the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival, and browse dozens of events throughout the region. A winethemed breakfast? Why not. Blending your own Bordeauxstyle bottle? Be a winemaker, if only for a few hours. Form a team, get some costumes, and stomp some grapes at the Festival of the Grape. Step away from the stomping and climb a ladder. The harvest season is long and varied, and nothing tastes better than your own, hand-picked and hand-made “farm to table” pie. Explore fruit stands dotted along highways and country roads, gathering all the fresh ingredients any cook could desire. Take a break from the fruits of your labour. Head outdoors to watch the salmon run, or hike up McIntyre Bluff in search of wildlife and truly get back to the land, capturing the stillness of a moment with a Bighorn sheep. As the night air begins to chill, you’ll know...you’ve fallen for Oliver in autumn.

Enjoy our Local Eateries After a day of exploring, take some time to sit back and relax in the easy-going atmosphere of one of our downtown bistros, cafÊs, family restaurants, golf courses or ethnic eateries. Fine dining is also available at several the local wineries, and an abundance of local produce is featured in Oliver menus along with extensive selections of Okanagan wines, often including labels not available in stores. Chefs from culinary hot spots elsewhere are making their way to the Okanagan to set tables on farms, between rows of vines, under a canopy of stars...right next to the produce growing in this agricultural haven. This isn’t just farm to table country; the distance between a fresh, vine grown tomato or a bright bunch of cherries can be mere steps. Everything from your wine, to the locally-made gin, to the tastes on your plate is fresh and made to show off the flavour of our region. Savour it.

Fruits of our lands With more than 400 farms cultivating the land to grow fresh produce, agriculture has been at the heart of Oliver since town namesake Sir John brought irrigation to the community in the early 1900s. From ground crops to fruit trees, farmers have tilled these soils for generations. This is where ‘freshly picked’ means knocking the dirt off a bunch of carrots from the farmers’ market, or climbing a ladder in the u-pick cherry orchard. Springtime brings weeks of blooming fields, like a fragrant wave flowing through the valley. Starting in mid-April (cherries) and ending in early May (apples), Oliver orchards literally burst into life. By summer it’s harvest time, beginning late in June and stretching well into October. It’s a patchwork quilt of colours, with golden Bartlett pears, deep red Bing cherries and bright green Granny Smith apples stitched together by rows of vineyards.

For the Kid in You Entertaining the young ones, or the young at heart, is easy in Oliver. Head to the Oliver library and learn about bugs, then go searching for them in one of our many parks. Speaking of... grab your board or bike, and head to the skateboard park and BMX track, both in Lions Park.
kid-like energy with a walk to the beach at Tuc-el-Nuit Lake; its nonmotorized mantra means hours of uninterrupted floating for those seeking quiet relaxation while the younger set splashes and builds sandcastles.
On a hot day, the Kinsman Spray Park & Playground will cool anyone down, or dip your toes in the Oliver community pool, open from May to the end of August. The adjacent community centre has activities throughout the year, for all ages and anyone seeking a bit of adventure.
The Oliver Community Arts Council can help you and the kids explore creativity at art classes throughout the year, take a brush and express your talents. From historical landmarks to hockey, birding to baseball, Oliver is where you can learn a thing (or two), and have fun at the same time.

Fairview, or see how they used to do things in the gold rush days at the local jail – it’s not used for anything now but photo-ops and tall tales. Oliver’s history is intricately tied to the heady boom-and-bust days of six shooters and dreams of striking it rich, even if those days didn’t last very long. The museum offers a snapshot of early settler life, and is entirely run by volunteers so there’s likely a good story or two waiting for you. Sun worshipper or snow lover, history buff or adventure seeker, your next tall tale is closer than you think, and the kids will have memories for years to come.

Gleaners Give Back A true reflection of our bounty and our community spirit, Oliver is home to an organization that helps feed the less fortunate around the world. You can participate in this unique experience that brings together volunteers and is a one-of-a-kind experience. Gleaning is the collection of leftover crops after fields have been harvested, with a goal of reducing agricultural and food waste. Founded in the autumn of 1994, the Okanagan Gleaners produce dried soup-mix consisting of a plethora of produce. Housed in a converted 1920s tobacco-drying barn, now a fullyrenovated food processing plant, since 1996 more than 45 million servings have been shipped and distributed around the globe to those

in need, averaging 6 million servings annually. It’s a modest facility surrounded by farms and orchards. But it is big in heart and soul, as volunteers gather produce that didn’t make the grade for store shelves, then work together in a coordinated production line to sort, chop, and peel, often outside in the Oliver sunshine with newfound
friends. Some “volun-tourists” come each year to help, and can sometimes grab a camping spot to be close to the action. It’s a great harvest activity with plenty of feelgood moments.

Winter The hustle and bustle of harvest is now a warm memory, and the landscape becomes tranquil around Oliver‌but it merely covers layers of activity beneath it. The cool silence is broken by the sounds of a concert or play floating down the street, friends gathered at an art show or a local theatre the Frank Venables auditorium is a gem, ready for action - or a winter walk on a snowy trail. Warm up after a day outside with dinner and a show. The South Okanagan Concert Series, the Oliver Movie Theatre and troupes of actors walking the planks of a stage make for a perfect entertaining end to a winter’s day of exploration. Cold enough for you? Grab a thermos full of java from a local coffee shop, your favourite tackle, and wait for the big one to come along. Wave a friendly hello to your fellow ice-fishers on Vaseux Lake. Take your skates and stick out for a game on natural ice. Nearby, Mount Baldy is a friendly mountain retreat yet to be discovered, with untracked powder, tree skiing and boarding. A getaway of solitude and stillness with enough sport to get your heart pumping. We still celebrate wine in winter, with a Rose Revolution to remind us that we are the Wine Capital of Canada, no matter the season, and winter in wine country.

Inspiration surrounds us, from sunsets, to the snow-dusted mountain peaks, to vineyards, to music floating through the air. Our performers act, sing, dance and play all year round. Spectacular Waterfront Homes
Here’s what our residents are saying about the Cottages. “The setting is simply stunning, the cycling is gorgeous and safe, there are wonderful hikes to explore, and there are fish just waiting to be hooked. But what we have discovered while building at The Cottages, is the wonderful community – a caring“family” of homeowners, reminiscent of the small towns in the Maritimes where I grew up. It was the location and setting that brought us to The Cottages, but it is the vibrant and welcoming community that will keep us here.” Visit our website for more details including photo galleries, home plans, video tours and more homeowner testimonials about our gorgeous location and homes.

We’ve got lots of them. Take one to savour a new favourite wine on a sunsoaked patio. Another to learn a new art form. Stare into the distance as the perfect swing sends your golf ball to the green. Or breathe crisp winter air atop a snowy mountain trail.
from traditional mulled cider to a rosé revolution.
Like a good recipe, Oliver lets you play with the best of its ingredients to create the perfect stay in the Wine Capital of Canada. Take a dash of the outdoors, a measure of culture, combine with creativity and top with fresh fruit and air...perfection.
And if that’s not enough to impress your friends, a plethora of fishing holes -- some of the best trout spots in the world -- will surely help you craft and cultivate a good “one that got away” story.
Each season in Oliver has its own flavour, you’ll want to try them all. Enjoy a winter walk, or ice fishing on Vaseux Lake, and once the muscles tire, area wineries will tempt your palate with winter in wine country,
In the warmer months, mix your love of the outdoors with a hike, bike or marathon. We’ve even got one race that combines your run with wine. Be prepared to brag when you finish.
Blame the big one’s escape on the distraction of your surroundings. Springtime blossoms, summer star-gazing, autumn vineyards, the reflection of winter ice. It’s your Oliver moment. Savour it.

Why fly south when Oliver and the surrounding area offers a recreational paradise, sunny skies - most of the year - and a wealth of things to do, tastes to try, and culture to experience during the cooler days of the year?
Local cultural activities rev up as we head inside for performances by arts and community groups, explore galleries and historical sites, take in films at our classic, “retro” movie theatre, or learn a new skill.
Snowbird season is a perfect time for an extended stay in the Wine Capital of Canada. Enjoy winter camping, rent a B&B, or perhaps consider a seasonal home-away-from home. The hustle and bustle of summer fades to a cool fall, filled with the colours of harvest, and the start of fall and winter art classes, cooking demonstrations, and depending on the previous months, a chance to participate in the final weeks of the grape harvest. Icewine picking, anyone?
We take time each November to celebrate pink wines at a Rosé Revolution, and welcome winter in wine country with special events and tastings. Hit the local trails for a more adventurous hike or a snowshoe, or bundle up for a bike ride. There’s lots to do under the quiet hush of winter, we offer a warm welcome no matter the temperature outside.

Spring Spring is a season of sights in Oliver: birds and blossoms abound. Break out the binoculars. More than 28,000 species of birds await the avid or amateur ornithologist. Whether you’ve got binoculars, a telephoto camera or a smartphone in your pocket, you’ll be reaching for it to capture an image of our feathered friends, perhaps even a “who’s who” of the local owl population if you’re lucky. As you’re looking up, take a moment to breathe in the blossoms. A sign of the cultivation to come, Oliver’s area orchards and vineyards become a colour palette worthy of a masterful painting, as trees and vines signal their readiness for the warm sun. Don’t be surprised to find artists capturing the season, or an art fair where you can pick up a new treasure. Take out a special pair of shoes, your choice: hiking boots or golf shoes? It’s time to get into the swing of spring. Our trails beckon for exploration, after all, that’s where the birds congregate and nature tempts you to take a moment to listen to the music of birdsong. Looking to master your swing, or merely putt around a green? Golf is definitely in season, with several courses to suit any level from beginner to “almost a pro.”

First Nations In the Syilx language Nk’Mip / Inkameep refers to the surrounding area which roughly translates as “flat bottom land at the mouth of the creek or river.” Find out more about one of the most successful First Nations bands in Canada at www.oib.ca.
The Okanagan First Nations people have been in the Oliver region for hundreds of years, and their culture and influence on the region are a critical part of the area’s history, and its future. Steeped in the bounty of the land and water, the First Nations depended upon and protected the rich agricultural resources in the South Okanagan, depending on nature to provide for their community, from food to medicine to shelter. This living history can be seen in the salmon run that takes place every year, increasing in

Whether it’s ascending McIntyre Bluff, trekking the backcountry to Ripley and Madden Lakes, or strolling the boardwalk at Vaseux Lake to glimpse a golden eagle, there’s a trail to get you out of (and around) town. Desert-like conditions mean Oliver is home to a variety of unique flora and fauna, and new trails to explore the area evolve every few years. Bring your bicycle - the International Hike and Bike Trail allows for two-wheeled adventures, and you may want to stop to catch the salmon run. Be sure to ride and hike with care, because the natural beauty includes prickly pear cactus - also known as ‘jumping cactus’. You might not want to find out why,
so it’s best to stay on the trails. Geocachers: you’re in luck. At present, we maintain many geocaches in the area, in some pretty unusual places. Don’t know what geocaching is? Think of it doing a scavenger hunt, but around the world. Our ‘travel bugs’ have gone tens of thousands of kilometers, around British Columbia, Alberta, Europe, even the South Pacific. If you find a cache, be sure to log it. Take a hike. You’ll be rewarded with some remarkable things: like 100-year-old antelope brush, the savoury aroma of wild grey sage, towering Ponderosa pines, highway-marked turtle crossings, and even a herd of California Bighorn Sheep. Have your camera or smartphone ready for some great pics.

Events From running to wine-ing to arts and culture, there’s always something happening in the Wine Capital of Canada.
Break a sweat Road races, marathons, endurance events. From beginner to pro, you can work up a sweat at a triathlon, or take part in a version of Marathon du Medoc, where contestants run from winery to winery, glass in hand. The Half-Corked Marathon is 17km with more than a dozen wineries and great bragging rights. Too easy? Sign up for the Freak’N’Farmer, featured on the Amazing Race Canada, and...good luck!
Grab a fork Seasonal wine festivals have a cornucopia of wine pairing dinners and chances to taste the creations of local chefs, or go casual with the annual Pig Out. Wander from picnic table to hay bale and try some BBQ paired with local wines. Visit your favourite winery for special events, and plan on coming to the first Roots N’ Fruits Faire for a “vintage jam” of food, drink, and culture.
Get creative Throughout the year our artists and artisans showcase their talents, indoors and out. In the summer, take in an outdoor concert at a winery or community park, or an outdoor movie night with the family. You might even catch the Perseid Meteor Shower. Experience Arts and Culture Week, or the local Showcase of Talent.
