biblioteka
1B / Studio / individual public + community Toronto, Ontario
biblioteka is a library, a bike cooperative and a meeting place of sorts. My aim for this project was to seamlessly integrate spaces with different functions in an attempt to create an extremely flexible building, while also interacting with the surrounding community. Biblioteka’s southern half houses the library, while the northern half includes the bike cooperative on the first floor, an assembly room on the second floor and a greenhouse study room on the top floor. Outside, biblioteka proposes a solution for the elimination of interstitial spaces in the city by turning an alley way into the building’s threshold, as well as a pedestrian passage through the site. A lack of separating walls and an abundance of windows create open, permeable spaces. biblioteka

a maker’s space
First year / Studio / individual live + work Cambridge, Ontario
a maker’s space is a studio surrounded by an abundance of evergreen trees, located along a river bank. This project focusses on the importance of isolation of the maker from the world and the seperation of work and sleep. The first floor of the building allows for work and life to be seamlessly combined in a large, flexible space which extends outdoors as well. The place for rest however, is raised above the workspace, providing the maker with an escape from work, when necessary. The maker is given a space where they can focus on what they are creating, both indoors and outdoors.

still more junk
first year // studio // group residential cambridge, ontario
still more junk is a project that focusses on the development of a residential complex in Cambridge, Ontario. The resulting building strives to create a community among its residents by placing importance on the interior courtyard. An emphasis is therefore placed on the backdoors of the apartments, causing the shared courtyard to become a shared backyard. The courtyard faces the park accross the street and remains open to the public as well, creating a dialogue with the surrounding environment.

the ig
1B / Enviro / individual temporary shelter Kuujjuaq, Quebec
the ig is a warm oasis in a cold and barren landscape. Despite this contrast, the small haven blends in with its icy environment, thanks to a white, stainless steel cladded exterior. The Ig takes precedence from the vernacular Inuit igloo, but is modified through the use of super insulated walls and an interior covered with wool felt and wood. On a winter’s day the Ig might be used simply to warm up after a day outside, to read a book or to hang out with a friend. At night, the window on the roof is angled to allow the occupant to star gaze without any obstructions. Essentially the Ig is a place for mental and physical rest.

craneWALK
1B / competition / group public + community London, England
craneWALK is an elevated path constructed on a pre-existing dock located in London, England. The design is a conglomeration of old cranes, something borrowed and something new. The original Battersea cranes remain iconic in their towering presence over the path. Control booths of other abandoned cranes are refurbished to house a variety of small businesse. New structural components are created through the melting and casting of old cranes. Together these elements create a public promenade that both monumentalizes and gives function to the Battersea Cranes.

As one reaches the iconic Battersea cranes, the path flattens to form a cantilevered platform. There, visitors are encouraged to linger in and enjoy the terrace garden.

Large pin conections are used to connect the tubular elements to both the dock and elevated path. These tubes are the main source of structure.

Bolted connections hold the I beams in the stair landings to a vertical one that extends from the concrete dock to the roof covering the stairs.

centre for architecture + design
BRIDGE is a student-run organization, consisting of both graduates and undergraduates at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I was introduced to BRDIGE upon arriving at the School of Architecture and I have been an avid member ever since.
Setting up the storefront, organizing notebooks and building tables for the 100 Notebook Event.
100 blank notebooks were loaned to 100 creative minds at the School of Architecture and the Cambridge community in January 2015 and were collected in April 2015. The result was an amazingly interactive exhibit at the BRIDGE storefront.
Together, members of the BRIDGE team maintain a digital presence (through media such as Facebook and Instagram) and organize events at their Cambridge storefront to reach out to the University of Waterloo and the Cambridge community through the promotion of architecture and design.
http://waterlooarchitecture.com/bridge/ bridge@waterlooarchitecture.com
Other events hosted at the Bridge storefront include karaoke night, photography exhibits and the presentation of recent publications of professors at the School of Architecture.
Renovations are still underway at the BRIDGE storefront, and include scraping woodfloors, sanding, cleaning and painting.
