Billy is useless. That’s what everyone tells him. His mother is more interested in finding a man, his brother bullies him, his teachers humiliate him and he’s always the last to be picked at football. For boys like Billy, there’s no escape. But one day he adopts a fledging kestrel and cares for it with a tenderness so absent in his own life. As the bird soars above him and swoops onto his gloved hand, Billy dares to dream of a life away from his run-down estate and a job in the coalmine. Set in South Yorkshire in the 1960s the original book and later film have a timeless popularity. In a new version for Doncaster we build on the smashhit success of our first homegrown production, The Glee Club, and present a faithful adaptation of this much-loved modern classic.

Friday 11 July
A handful of shorts no longer than 15 minutes submitted by emerging writers from across the region and performed by a professional company in a rehearsed reading.
Icarus is a story of hope, ambition and legacy. A surprising re-telling of the classic myth.
For our first Script Slam back in March we performed seven very different plays, each with very different subject matters. From comedies to heart-breaking stories, monologues, duologues and ensemble pieces.
In 2010 the Mars One Foundation set out their plans to establish a human settlement on the red planet by 2024. They received over a quarter of a million applicants for the one-way mission. Inspired by real events, Icarus looks to the future and asks what would drive somebody to leave Earth forever.
In our second slam, only one thing is for sure: these short performances will be full of surprise. Join us as we delve into the future of British theatre made in Doncaster.
Using their unique physical and cinematic style, Square Peg Theatre create an elegant, bold and beautifully choreographed world from the empty stage.

THEATRE AND MEDIA ARTS
Right Up Our Street is taking place across the borough to make art and performance happen in surprising and exciting ways. To find out about everything happening go to rightupourstreet.org.uk. If you’re an artist or group that has events happening in Doncaster you can promote them through Right Up Our Street to thousands of people free of charge. You can also apply for commissions to work in the town. Visit the website for more information. Right Up Our Street is led by a consortium of Doncaster arts organisations (Cast, darts, DCLT and DVAN) and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England until 2016.
